Thank you! I think understanding neutrals and grays is very important.
This was so useful wasn’t it! So great at explaining, takes his time and explains thoroughly, most teachers rush through it don’t give you time to fully understand.

Love that you appreciate these stunning colours and rocks too, we seem to be in the minority. I love seeing your video it’s brilliant. I am tired of all the love of “bright colours”. I have thoroughly loved your video, thankyou 🤎

OMGosh! I live in rural Tennessee and I have an infinite supply of reference photos for creek rocks! I attempted painting them when I first discovered Watercolour. I had a conglomeration of overworked, muddy lumps. I haven't attempted them since. Thanks to you and your SUPERB tutorial, I feel I've got the skill set necessary to give it another try! I can't thank you enough for the inspiration, knowledge and confidence I needed to paint something I love so much. I'm a rock hound and this is just soooo important to me....you are a gift to beginning/intermediate watercolorists and I'm quite thankful 😄!
Thank you Pam ! I'm very glad this has been helpful and I appreciate the feedback !!!

Hey Rick,
You always do a wonderful job explaining what colors and techniques you use in all of your lessons, however including the hands on "warmup" at least for me, helps drive the lesson home, great job, hope you include more of this style in the future.

UA-cam "instructional videos".. please watch and take note on how one should be used to; instruct, disseminate or share information for viewers to learn.
If only the personal instructors I have had were able to share/teach painting instructions as you have so aptly of this "simple" exercise, well then I believe I could/would have progressed in my learning skill level with greater understanding and less frustration and stress!
By far one of the two a most exceptional tutorials (instructors) I have ever viewed. I wish I lived in you area just to take classes with you. I truly look forward to viewing more videos that you produce. PLEASE continue!
Thank you Rick.
PS I have NO idea how you were given 2 thumbs down... its a mystery.
Thank you Liam for your generous comments and feedback !!! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts !

This is a really helpful exercise, and benefits also as you can see results on something tangible that seems difficult to paint (rocks). Thank you !
Thanks Debrah! Rocks can be an interesting subject. I like your viewpoint on the tangible results.
Excellent teaching video. I am so grateful that you took time from your daily life to teach those of us that have fallen in love with watercolor. I have learned so much from this lesson! I’m greedy enough to beg for more. So glad I subscribed! Many blessings!
Thank you so much for the great comment Sherry!!! I appreciate you subscribing! Glad you liked the video and have such a great appreciation for watercolor!
Ten thumbs up for this!
Thanks Alison!
Great demonstration!! Thanks
Thanks Diane !
Where have you been all this time! This is a most enlightening series on watercolour painting and I'm so pleased I have found your channel. At last someone who explains this medium so well. Thank you!
Thanks Margie ! I appreciate your comments and am glad you found my channel !!!
Thank you so much for this. You put in a lot of time and hard work and your fans appreciate it. I have been wondering and struggling with how to make a color warm or cool and you answered it here. Because I read somewhere that things in the foreground should be a warmer color (I think that's the way it went.) so here's my answer. Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing your comments!
I am painted in oils and acrylics for a long time but just learning watercolor. Your videos have help me and taught me so much I’m so thankful for them and all the time that you put in them to teach all of us.
Thank you ! I'm very glad they have been helpful.
Excellent video!!!!
Thank you Elaine !
I did the exercise and applied all the techniques you suggested. I even charged the wash on the rocks and they are quite lively (lol) for rocks. Always great direction and inspiration from your videos !
Sounds Great Parker !!!
Subbed and have been watching your vids, love your techniques and teaching, have learned alot from your color mixing tips.😀
That's excellent ! Thank you for watching and commenting !!!
Bonjours de France merci pour vos video
Thank you!
fabulous
Thanks Heide !!!
Thank you, love the videos showing the techniques of mixing colours ,value and tone, it really helps a beginner like me...will you be doing a video of greens with trees and grass?
Thank you for the feedback. Great suggestion on the greens as I think that's one we all stuggle with at times.
Will you be doing more of these detailed videos? This is probably the only tutorial I followed and didn't get frustrated at any point. I'm very happy with the way the exercise turned out. Can t wait to do part three!
That's great Bonnie! I do plan on doing similar videos. I'm glad you didn't get frustrated. Good luck with part 3 !
Bonjour, thank you for your vidéo. The explications are clear even if I don't understand all you said.. . Sorry 😊! Pour moi votre démo est très utile merci encore.
Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm glad it is useful !
another lovely tip for the saved folder! If you take requests, or know of a good video showing it, can you tackle color temperature in relation to value how do you know if its cool vs warm? I fell in love with watercolors again after a Daniel Smith demo in Louisville earlier this year (I live in Ky.), as I had used just normal ones, and after seeing the luminosity and colors- jumped in again and theres so many new things!! thanks for providing a great resource for us watercolor lovers!!
Thanks Dyann! I'm not sure what's out there. I'll take a look. It's a great suggestion! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. Thank you for not having background MUSIC while explaining lol👍
Thank you for commenting!
Rick, greatly enjoy your videos! What watercolor brushes do you prefer, any favorites? Thanks for inspiring us.
You can find a listing of my materials on the studio page of my website. Here is the link: rsurowiczart.com/studio/
Thank you for the tutorial Rick, I really enjoyed it and found it very educational, I would like to see more videos like this please. Could you tell me what is in the spray bottle you used to create the mottled effect? Many thanks and have a great day.
Thank you Naomi ! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I just had water in the bottle. It's a bottle with somewhat of a coarse spray.
Fantastic tutorial, having trouble getting a good dark grey with cerulean blue and burnt sienna.....is that normal
Ultramarine blue and burnt sienna would be better.
Excellent lesson. It looks like you sometimes don't clean your brush before dipping into a different color (when mixing neutrals). If this is true, how do you keep your colors clean?
I try to rinse it but probably end up doing that about 50% of the time. When I go to another color without rinsing, I try to go to the back of the well on my palette. That way I keep the color toward the front less affected.
Rick. Stellar video! Question. When you do your second coat, are you not covering up the salt affect you used for the first coat?
Because I'm working transparently, those textures still come through.
Thank you, a very helpful video.Just a question, what kind of spray is it you use?? I did not understand (probably because of my bad english)
Thank you! The spray is just water.
When you applied the darker wash on the rocks did you wipe any of it off or leave glaze as is and it dried lighter ??
Left it alone and it dried lighter, although I occasionally blot with a tissue.
You mention a coarse mist sprayer. All I seem to see are fine mists. Do you remember where you got yours?
Thanks ..have painted this several times but coming back for more till I get it right...can I ask? How do you keep you paints from getting dusty and cracking ...does it come with a lid? Been trying to buy one..very hard in Australia... cheers..
Hi Sue, My Palette does have a lid. Here is a link to a video where I describe how I maintain my palette: ua-cam.com/video/HPoVxuE-xZA/v-deo.html
@@RickSurowiczWatercolor thanks .. very helpful ....I will try to order one the same.....
I got a greenish tint when i mixed the cerulean blue and burnt seinna. what am i doing wrong?
I use American Journey Cerulean blue which uses the pigment "PB36". Some of the Cerulean Blue formulas use "PB35" which tends to give a greeenish result from the feedback I've received.
Can you also do this with a purple, yellow combination? If not, why not? TY
Yes, if your going across the color wheel and mixing compliments, you can create a variety of neutrals.
Now i understand...
where will I find part 1 please
Can you tell me what brand of paper and paint did you use? Thank you
Hi Meg, I paint on 140lb CP Lanaquarelle. I have all the materials I use listed on the studio page of my website rsurowiczart.com/studio/
I cant find part 1
Stupid beginner question, and I seem to be googling the wrong things for the answer, but what is a "1/4 sheet"? What size is a "sheet"? Thanks, whoever answers. And thanks, Rick, for the great stuff.
A full sheet of watercolor paper is 22" x 30". It's a common practice to section a full sheet into smaller sizes. A half sheet 15" x 22" and a quarter sheet 11" x 15" are comment sizes. Dividing a full sheet into equal quarters will give you four 11" x 15" sheets to paint on.
Rick - forgot to ask what is the exact name of your palette? I want one exactly like it. Thanks, Caroline 😊💁
It's the "American Journey Cavalcade" porcelain palette from Cheap Joe's. If you go to the studio page of my website, I have listed all the materials I use along with links. Here is the link to my studio page: rsurowiczart.com/studio/
vedo he oltre al mascherante ed al sale usi uno spray cosè grazie delle tuelezioni
Yes, I used three methods. Masking, salt, and spray
ma lo spray che matariale è acqua?
