Very detailed explanation for a simple recording / mix. Key takeaway is use my ears and do as many or as little moves / plugins that is takes to make it sound great. I’m dealing with male/female acoustic duo mix at moment and the amount of sibilance in female vocals is crazy, I’m going to manually clip gain the S’s and Chs first and start my mix over again using methods from your video !! Thank you 🙏 for this
This is one of the coolest videos I think I've ever seen. That's such a great performance, and watching you add each plugin to make it even more amazing is just magical. Great work.
I really don't get how 2 figure 8 patterns give separation.... I might have asked this before, but wouldn't 2 cardioids give way more separation? I would have thought figure 8 picks everything up? Or is it that they cancel each other out?
the 8:s ignore the other sound source when in 90° angle. Try it, it works! I saa one good video from Neumann about itnin tube and they explain it well.
Just do your best. Don't compare yourself. My favourite artists don't have the best mixes but the emotion is there and that's what I care about. In the end it comes down to a good composition. Think about it like this, some of Bob Marley and The Beatles is terribly mixed BUT the songs are still good, because of the songs themselves. But I can relate, hence why I'm here✌🏻
@@Matt_McQueen Haha make me as good as that guy?? I think there's your answer, I'm just not that good. I don't mind, I still enjoy trying to record. After 2 strokes affecting my right arm my guitar strumming isn't good these days. But I just can't get that "warm, full sound" that you guys get..... that acoustic guitar sounds amazing, and the vocals are top notch too...I'll keep watching your vids and practising :)
@@Matt_McQueen thanks so much! should i experiment with putting it on master track like you do here? i.e. to capture everything all together.. gtr/vocals.. or also on each track separately?
Anything can be replicated with other plugins. Id say the most unique thing is the UAD Ocean Way Room plugin but you could get close with the right room reverb.
This is singlehandedly the most important video ive ever watched
I agree.

Man, this is a great tutorial. Thanks so much for this!
Glad it was helpful!
Super thumbs up for the J-45 alone!
2 years late, but thankful for this walkthrough! Great tips!
So glad to see David on here again, can't express enough how great of an engineer and person he is!
Awwww thanks buddy!
I keep coming back to this video, this is SO good!! The amazing warm clarity is super. It helps that Clayton is an absolute god muso!! :))
My dad has an 1975 Gibson J45 and it's always been my favorite acoustic I've ever played. Such an awesome guitar ...
I used to have a dad
does he still have it?
@@Matt_McQueen sure does! He had to get the binding repaired a few years ago but, yeah, we still get it out and play it on special occasions!

Thanks for watching! David is the man! Clayton (songwriter) is equally amazing.
impressive work. There are not many videos for this kind of material. I learned a lot. Thank you so much, it sounds great.
Thanks for the tutorial! Gonna try my best to apply some of this with the tools I have available to me, will definitely come back to learn more.
Thanks for watching!
David
I love that how it's in Mono, and it sounds very good. Thank you
Thank you!
That room simulation plugin is insane.
It's fantastic. I have been using it on drums recently too.
nice work! Just wondering if this could be done in an even more simple way? a lot of plugins there!
Great job.
Great vocals and song, sounds awesome!
Priceless! Thank you so much!
Nice one. I was taking notes...very informative. Thank you!
Sounds so good! Is there a video talking about recording this take??
Yes, the video on our channel that was released right before this.
The end result sounds great. Do you just ignore spill into the mics?
Great video 👏🏾
Thank you!!
Do I need an Apollo audio interface to use Ocean Way Studios? Thanks.
You either need an Apollo interface or a UAD satellite.
Great video! I learned a lot
Thanks for watching!

Thanks for your great classes. Friend do you have the stems of this song to practice the mix?
Pretty sure that's not what the sooth pre set means. Soft/hard are the 2 modes haha. But great video!
Can you please share the mic the singer is using?
2:52 - the react reason why I don’t like the red hot chilly peppers. Just sounds unmixed
Man this really makes me want to give up, that guy is SOO good and the recording/mix is a million miles better than anything I ever do :((

What do you think are some of your biggest struggles? Is there a way we can help?

Any other good Room Simulation Plugins out there?
The IK Sunset Sound Reverb is also wonderful.
@@Matt_McQueen thanks so much! should i experiment with putting it on master track like you do here? i.e. to capture everything all together.. gtr/vocals.. or also on each track separately?
I’d use it on aux and feed elements into it to taste.
Step one: Buy plugins for 10k
will i need plug in like you or not... sorry im a new

@@Matt_McQueen i dont have any plugin yet. i dont know which one i would have and have most review
Problem for the normal guy
is not the mixing but the recording.
You’re in luck, part 1 of this video series is about how we did the recording.
@@Matt_McQueen wow i follow, big thanks
