See, this is why I watch tutorials even if I already know how to do/make something - you never know if it's going to be a new way of doing it. This is so much easier than the "measure from the stitch line and cut a square" method - such a PITA to get those squares perfect! - and much more accurate than the "flatten it out & stitch across where it looks right" way that I've been guilty of more than once. Excellent tutorial; thank you for posting it.
You are so right. I will watch endless tutorials when learning a new thing or refreshing and I find I pick up different tips and techniques along the way. A big time commitment but worth it in my book.
I've been making box corners in so many different ways I can't count them all. This is so obvious yet simple. Thank you. I will have perfect box corners on the new bag I'm about to make for my sister. It's my ffrst attempt with Harris Tweed.
I have seen sooooo many videos and didn't get it. In under 10 minutes with this video CLARITY - CONSTRUCTION EXAMPLES - CONFIDENCE. I went right down to my machine and was able to turn a fun pillow cover into a box corner bag and made a birthday gift. Boom. DONE. I have now subscribed and won't waste my time searching other videos.
I've seen lots of tutorials on making boxed corners. Yours is the first I've seen to explain how when you make the bottom larger, it shortens the height of your bag. ( by half that measurement.) I had to learn that on my own. TYSM for sharing this informative video with us.
Brilliant! I'm about to begin my bag making journey and this makes so much sense and takes a lot of mystery out of taking that first stem. I feel really confident to even start designing a simple bag to see how I go! Thank you SO much.
Holy moly, you have no idea how I've struggled with zippers and boxed corners. You are wonderful. Many, many thanks for this tutorial and the "sew a perfectly straight zipper" tutorial as well.
Avid sewer. New knowledge is wonderful. Just picked up some leather work tools, one (a Pony) needed a cover, no problem-made one. It was ugly, two 90 degree corners, UGH! I searched square corner, wrong vocabulary and no hits. Then! Lightbulb moment. How to sew corners on a tote. Bingo! You popped up. Wonderful. Couples views of your video, over to the machine with my squares. Outstanding tutorial. The process worked on the first try. Marvelous. I looked you up for a subscription; found you and in my eyes I think you are much prettier with longer hair. Thanks so much. TaTA
This is the best tutorial I've seen on boxed corners. I only wish I had seen this a couple of years ago when I started making totes, purses, etc. Thank you for showing & explaining the best way to do this!
OHMYYGAWWD! MY MIND OF CREATIVITY HAS BEEN EMPLODED RIGHT NOW!! I AM GETTING WONDERFUL INFO ON PERFECT BOXING! THIS IS SO FREAKIN AMAZING! OHMYGAWWD! TO THE SEWING MACHINE OF DOOM! LOL! *rushes frantically to the Sacred Singer 4411HD to try out new method*
New to sewing and this is the best explanation by far! I now understand why my boxed corners were not looking even. Thank you. This works so much better than the method I was using.
how PERFECTLY SIMPLE!!!! THANK YOU :-) Adding to this post..... I made a quilted bag and used this method. WOW how simple and works like a charm. No cutting, pure genius. Thank you again for sharing your method. BTW I was quite nervous, never having used this method and it was my first quilted project!!! 😁
By applying my mediocre skills and using an ancient sewing machine, I made a bag out of some crappy leather. My measurements were off, my seams were horrible, yet to my surprise, by following your instruction, I actually ended up with some decent corners! Thanks for sharing this and for taking the time to put it on video - especially such a quality, well done video.
Glad to help. Keep making bags it's addictive! Join my Facebook board for help and support with all my patterns, chat anytime: facebook.com/groups/170115107145604
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! I am new to sewing and I don't like the straight bags without a boxed bottom so I have been wrestling with this concept for weeks. I am SO glad you did this tutorial. You just made my sewing career exponentially better! You are amazing!
OMG!..You just made my day! I literally spent almost two hours experimenting and messing up! Now..now I know what to do, and my corners are perfect!! Thank you so much for such thorough explanation. No more guess work.
When you showed the rule about the height being half the width of the corner, I literally said NO WAY to no one in particular. This changes everything! Thanks so much.
Right! 😁 I think this is the 6th video I've watched on this technique (over probably 15 years as I'm not a regular sewer... or very skilled, though totes are my #1 necessity!) and her explanation really seems like it will stick. (Yet I've saved the video regardless!)
Literally, bless you for this information. I was struggling terribly with this component as a person new to sewing. I implemented your techniques, and voila, beautiful box corners even on the heavy canvas I am sewing. I really cannot thank-you enough, you are a wonderful presenter, teacher and person.
Thank you for this video! Using it and a formula I found on the Internet for making a boxed cover I made a nice dust cover for a portable oil-filled heater that we use occasionally.
Thanks so much for this awesome tutorial! It has been years since I made a tote with boxed corners and your video reminded me. Also, your tip about ironing the seams open is brilliant!! Thanks again!
Yes, use with any stabiliser Decovil Light included. If you have an entry level machine and worried about layers and bulk you can cut the stabiliser out of the corner sections beneath where you are sewing.
Thank you very much. I was looking for something that could box out some bags that I am making. I just went in and did it on one of my test bags I just did an hour ago, Though doing a zipper and liner on the serger, I am going to try and cut one of the corners off to pull the bag thru tomorrow Then just zigzag the corner after I pull it. Thanks again!
Nice video, can you possibly do an updated video with a formula explaining how the box bottom reduces the height, but it also reduces the width of the bag.
Great video.I am just a beginner and never used a sewing machine but my first bag was reasonable with, of ,course many errors but this video will certainly help along the way. Thank you
That’s a great tutorial Diane, I do like boxed corners, (which by the way sounds so much more elegant than “sugar bag bottoms” which is how I used to refer to them) Can’t wait to see what’s coming next.
Thank you for this clear, easy and inspirational video. I wish I’d watched this a while ago as I ‘interpreted’ the box bottom of an existing bag to copy it, which then became a total mess! Bless you.
Thank you I have struggled grately with box bottoms they are never even and it takes me 10 minutes to do it! This is such a simple easy way to do it and will definitely be trying this out when I make my next bag thank you! I am going to subscribe I didn’t realise how great a channel this is! Again thank you xxx
Hi Dian thank you for this it’s just refreshed my mind. I want to make a bag because i am always leaving my boating one at home so I’m hoping once I make it I will be proud to show it. I would like to quilt mine so at what stage would quilt it please xxx
Quilt your fabric before you start cutting out or making your bag Wendy - quilting will make the fabric panel slightly smaller so cut out after you have quilted if possible
I have watched several videos on making boxed corners but this one is the best by far. Thank you.
Wow, thank you!
FINALLY an easy and to the point explanation on how to sew boxed corners. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
So helpful. Many thanks
That tip at the end on how much it reduces the height by was so key! Thank you very much ❤
Glad it was helpful. Thank you x

Thank you for ironing the seams, that makes it perfect. Too many sewers don't iron and it makes all the difference x
I know, I always tell my students about underpressing. You can never press enough as far as I'm concerned xx
I can't figure out how to iron the bottom seam open
New to sewing and this is the best explanation by far! I now understand why my boxed corners were not looking even. Thank you. This works so much better than the method I was using.

Can I box corners if I have used deco in light as a stabiliser. Thank you for your tutorials, they are so thorough and really help x
Yes, use with any stabiliser Decovil Light included. If you have an entry level machine and worried about layers and bulk you can cut the stabiliser out of the corner sections beneath where you are sewing.
Thanks to u I made my first bag...it wasn't perfect but it was good enuff for guberburnet work.
Wonderful!
Thank you - EXCELLENT demonstration - appreciate
