Thank you for the in-depth explanation of effect on final size with examples. This video is criminally underrated.
Thanks so much Luke. I'm so glad you liked it😁
Thank you so much for this! I understand the 2D-turning-into-3D in theory but it's so hard to imagine it without seeing it worked out so patiently and with so many iterations the way you've done ❤
You're very welcome. Thank you😀
OHMYGAWWD! YOU JUST BLEW MY SEWING MIND WIDE OPEN! NOW I KNOW WHAT TO DO! I WAS DOING IT THE WRONG WAY!
haha, glad it helped Dottie😀
Thank you for the comparison. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone do this and it’s really eye opening to see these measurements side by side.
Thanks Sandi. Hope it's a good help for you 😁
Thank you , the best explanation for boxing corners ever!! NOW I understand , and now I can get the look I've been wanting! 😂
Thanks Sandy. I'm glad it's helped😁
Christine, this is exactly what I needed to know. You are the most generous and clearest instructor online one. Thank you so much!
My pleasure Karen. Thank you😁
This is just what I’ve been searching for as I need a bag with a wide flat bottom. I am so grateful to you for posting this. I get it now….. the bigger the box that is cut at the bottom of the bag, the wider the bottom of the bag will be. Thanks a million!
Glad it was helpful!😁
Wow! I had that model of serger, sold it and replaced it with what I imagined was an upgrade. (Another brand name). The new one worked well for about an hour, and then fails and needs adjustments. This continues to be the case, so I rarely use it. I am incredibly disappointed and wish I had kept my Huskylock - it never let me down. I celebrate your resurrection of this older, but great model.
Thanks so much. I've never understood how to box and now I can do it on any project.
That's awesome Lynda. Well done😁
I really like your videos . I would love it if the volume was higher as I have mine turned all the way up.
Thanks for your details
Thanks Carol. Still working on sound 😆
Great video. Thank you for sharing your time.
My pleasure Mary😀
What blew my mind about this process is when you drew the blocked corners on the ends of the bag, and THEN, put the corners of each side to the "point" so you can see where the lines were lined up, THEN, YOU SEW ON THAT LINE, AND THEN CUT! WOW!!! AMAZING!!!!!! I MUST DO THIS!!! i wonder can you topstitch the bottom seams to make the bag stand up better?
You can topstitch the seams Dottie. You just have to hold your tongue the right way😀
Thank you once again an outstanding video. Added to my sewing essentials! You are an excellent teacher. Im always delighted when your videos come out. I hope you get much from them bc we do. I love that they are evergreen so we can watch them over and over again and I hope that helps you as much as it helps us.
Thank you so much Art.4.Love. I love sewing, and sharing what I do, and am always thrilled when people can get something out of my videos. 😊
This is the simplest explanation I have found so far. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you😁
Thank you! Your demonstration and explanation were very clear.
Glad it was helpful Vinita😊
I get nervous cutting the corners, just incase I’ve done the corners wrong, this video really helped, thank you Christine
You're very welcome Jenny 😁
Great explanation! I was wondering about the size of the corners and now I understand. My 3 siblings and I share care of our Mother so I made a meds bag to carry her meds and toiletries, whatever needs to be passed around with her and it works well for that instead of carting cardboard boxes around. Much easier to carry with one trip to the car instead of several. I kind of figured out the corners but your explanation really helped clarify it. I appreciate your skill and expertise!
Glad it was helpful for you Peggy 😀
What a clear and concise explanation of boxed corners. I’m going to cut myself some templates per your suggestion. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful Gerri 😀
Thanks! I have made the grocery tote but I think I measured from the edge of fabric instead of stitching 🤦🏻♀️. Now I understand what they seemed so skinny!
Thanks Betty. Hope this is a help for future bags 😀
Thanks for this great info! I will be using this method on my next hand sewn leather tote!!!
Glad it was helpful Jo😁
Such a helpful video, thank you for sharing ❤️.
Fabulous!! Finally a really clear explanation on boxed corners. Thank you so so much. 😀🙂🤗

You're very welcome Laurie. Thank you😀
Thank you so much for such a well explained video ,you make things look simple, love all your videos and have made most of the items.Your videos are so easy to follow
Wow! You've been busy Eve. Thank you 🌝
Christine your tutorial and then your gracious reply to me about how high to make the project was so good, I wanted to report back with my picture but there is no way to attach. Wrapping paper is such a waste of money, I wanted to make a tall bag that could not only cover my gift but be used to transport items from the baby shower or as a laundry bag. I love it. I couldn’t have done it without your help.

Just recently came across your tutorial and tried it for the first time…it was fantastic! Thank you so much for this new technique AND the explanation of the differences you can achieve with different sizes. Thank you 👏👏👏👏
Glad it helped Cindy. I have a more in-depth tutorial coming soon 😄
Thank you! So helpful. Have a great rest of your day!
Thanks Courtenay 🙂
It is what I searched for and your video was the first to come up that sounded like it had answers to the question. I made three different bags this past month. Actually 6 all together as I made duplicates of a few and only one of another. Think it's been like 8 maybe 9 years since I made any style bag like this. I rarely if ever...ok never used a pattern in my life. Maybe you would say in 1974 when I made 6 frostline zipper shoulder bags that would classify as a pattern. I learned a lot from my short run with frostline kits in the 60-70's. I've just always found patterns interesting but the need to make changes. So not sure where the talent comes from to look at something and make it or think it up and make it comes from but I lean hard towards make it up as you go and my husband of 52 years goes where's your pattern for...yeah I sewed it up into the project dear...as in no pattern. Anyway 3 bags I didn't make boxed corners instead I sewed in rectangle bottoms. But the other 3 bags I did box and the small 2" side bags with upper zipper closure wasn't as much a problem as it came to the super sized tote bag open top that was 8 inch sides so cut off 4 inches or actually at the time I did 4.5 squares. The problem was it wouldn't line up just right. I was like less than a quarter through your demonstration wen duh of course I had no side seams. I had used one long piece folded in half and sewn up for the sides and then centered the only seam to the middle of the back. This results in no seam so no seam allowance and when you sew the bottom seam you have a seam. I marked my square cut outs off from the edge before seams and ignored the seam. Your method of going from seam to seam will correct this for me. How because for the side mark I'll run it to the edge and for the bottom it'll be inside the seam like you show us so well in your video. My seam is there it's just a no see seam. Had I used two matchng pieces of fabric and sewn them together with two centered side seams when completed I'd been fine. It's just there seems to be a little bit of rust in the brain these days. Despite the rust all three porjects came out lovely. So much so that dang...no good deed goes unpunished hit again. I gifted two of these bags to a friend who then took a trip with the super sized tote which was a kind of joke gift at that but turns out I swear she loves it more than the contents it held as a means to control a super sized throw and two queen size pillow shams compete with pillow inserts as a means to deliver the gift I needed a bag that could support it all and keep them clean and dry. Slushy snow rain mix was hitting right about then. Anyway using this over sized tote she went off to visit her best friend out of town and when she was packing to come home the friend wanted to keep her bag. So I told her she'd have to bring me the two bags over for us to cut them out if she wants to make her friend a couple of these bags...as it went from the tote to oh she'd love one of these smaller bags too. (The smaller bag was a bright red emergency bag made to hold choking and CPR equipment clean in her car as it was cheaper to buy refill kits for vacuum anti choking gear than the name brand version. Friend was not interested in my making her friend a RED emergency bag but more a make up bag or the like. These are so quick and easy to do and I have enough marine vinyl in her blue color she has in mind for her friend I agreed if she agrees to a smaller more reasonable sized large tote and we can make the smaller bag look more pleasing fo carry as a small zipper closed bag with maybe dual shoulder and cross body straps. Just she can not ask me to make any more as she's to watch, help, and learn how to do this on her own. She has a sewing machine and her world is about to open up into the world of sewing like never before. Oh the innocence and oh the magical world of sewing paired with ones own imagination. Thank you for helping me so quickly pinpoint my error. I knew it had to do with the seam allowance just for some reason wouldn't firm up in my mind that it wasn't the seam I allowed for but the side seams that were not actually there. RIGHT...Only been sewing bags and boxed corners for over 60 years. I had parents who gifted me with a brand new top end Singer 501 slant o matic at age 12 in 1962. It was a guilt gift on their part. Who am I to argue with my parents guilt? I went to see grandparents every summer for 2 weeks as required in my family and when I came hope there was this machine they had bought for me. I still use it and have 3 bought used off Ebay over the past 15 years that help me get parts off of it for repairs and also I know have a portable one that runs as good and I set up outside under a covered protected patio area to sew in summers. Life is good. Thank you for your sharing. And love your detailed show and tell and explanations too.
Thanks so much for your rather lengthy comment. I'm so glad the video helped, and that your seam problem was solved. I too love vintage machines, and have several, but rarely make the time to use or repair them. Awesome job on 52 years of marriage. That's amazing😁
This! It's like you read my mind, lol. Great tutorial. Thank you! 💖
Haha, you're welcome 😊
You are a lifesaver!
Thank you Cassie. I hope it helps😀
Thank you so much for taking the stress out of boxing a bag, I'm using faux Leather on a tote bag which is going to be a gift for someone and I really didnt want wonky boxes.... an absolute brilliant instruction vidwo

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I was so inspired by you that I cut out a bunch of different sized material plus made 1, 2, 3 & 4 inch templates. I sewed a bunch and now I have various prototypes to reference when I go to make boxed bags 😄.
That's fantastic Louisa. The templates will come in handy for years to come😁
Wow ! So helpful.
Thank you. I'm glad you like it😀

Adorable Christine. So cute. Looking forward to hearing how many you sold and how they went at $15
Thanks David ☺️
So helpful & well explained! Thank you!
You're very welcome Gloria 😀
Hi, I’m enjoying your video and your explanation. I’m an experienced sewer though never have made totes (at least in the conventional sense and with a plan-haha).
I need help figuring out measurements. I’m attempting to make totes as gifts and want the finished size to be 12x15 (height) w/ 4” sides.
After several attempts I’m creating more of a tall thinner bag than I want.
I’ll need to create a turned hem for the top so I’ve added an extra inch and am using 1/2” seams.
Any suggestions for what size of fabric I should start out with? I’m embarrassed but I’m just not getting it right.
Thanks
Hi Anne. To get 4" boxed base, you'll do 2" squares at the corners. ( 1" will give 2" across, 3" gives 6' base, so they always double) 12" wide plus 2" for each side to come in to creat the boxing will make it 16" wide, and to get 15" high, you'll need to add 2", so fabric should be 16" w x 17" h. Then you'll need to add seam allowance to each side, and add allowance for the hem 😀
BEST explanation ever! I’m trying to make a fleece box bottom bag to fit a baby gift that is 11 x 11 x 40” high. I’m assuming a 6” box would work to make a (12”) to accommodate. My only question is how to determine how many yards of fabric I need. I’m assuming 40 plus 40 but maybe that isn’t enough. I’m probably going to add a draw string to the top to close the bag. Could you please explain how to measure for a finished height? Thank you.
Candy, every inch of boxing you do will reduce height by the same amount. If you have 6" corners, it will reduce height of fabric by 6" as well, so you'd need to keep that in mind as well as seam allowances😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs thank you so so much for responding and that makes perfect sense!!
Thank you so much
You're very welcome.😀
Very helpful 🙂🎉👍❤️🧵

Thank for the video on making the boxed corners. That I understand. My question is " How do you decide what size to make the corners for a certain type of bag". I what to make a boxed bottom laundry bag (27×27). How do i decide what size the corners should be.
Liz, I did a video a couple of weeks ago on how to work out boxed corners. It has 4 variations from one size. Hope it helps. ua-cam.com/video/oAM_dWB_a9Y/v-deo.htmlsi=95arsDa94KgirJEz 😊 Actually the video this week for the storage basket will also help
Very nice explanation good mam
Thank you 😊

You are welcome Nancy 😀
EXCELLENT. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!😀
Id like to gind someone who actually explains the difference in height of the bag and width of the bag depending on what size boxed corner is cut. This would be helpful so we could plan the finished height and width of our bag. We might want the top of bag a little wider than the bottom too.
Linda, this video should help you. I started with the same size for all bags, and varied the boxed corners. 😀 ua-cam.com/video/oAM_dWB_a9Y/v-deo.htmlsi=EMnbqrIVZNm368Nq
Amazing- thank you💐
Thanks Elizabeth ☺️
I wish you showed us the shape of the bottom. That’s the part I’m especially interested in
Great video though thanks 💝🙏
Thank you. I did do another similar video which may show the bottoms better😀
Thank you for yet another great video. Can I please ask what you use to make your templates?
I use clear plastic for my templates. You can purchase a product called template plastic, or make them with ice cream containers or even card stock 😀
Thank you 😀
Any tips for marking fabric for cutting that is not like yours? I'm thinking handwoven, with multi colors and yarn thicknesses. Thanks!
If the fabric is too hard to mark, I'd just go and use pins and clips😁
I love your explanation but please can you tell me the deductions I need to get my finished height, let's say I need a finished height of 14 inches how does the size of the bottom affect that?
Taiwo, that will depend on the size of your boxed corners. If you want it 4 inches across the bottom, you will use a 2" box. So height - 2" = 14" overall height. Therefore fabric would be 16" (plus seam allowance) 😀
Thanks for the tutorial! How much do I need to add back if I add the boxed corners? I am going to alter a pattern. It has a gusset but I'd rather make it with boxed 2" corners.
Naomi, for every inch of boxing, you will lower the height of your bag by the same amount. It will also give you an opening of two inches.😊
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs thanks so much!
I find your videos to be very helpful. One question here. If I do a 4" box corner, does that take four inches off the height of the bag? Or is it two inches?
Loruca, if you cut a 4" box out of your fabric it will reduce the height by the same. It will also make the base 8" across😁
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Thank you! I am trying to make a backpack for my ukulele, and I must admit that, whatever I do, or however I do it, it will definitely look home-made. But I'm telling myself it's fun.
Most definitely fun Loruca. As long as you love it, that's all that matters😀
Thank you ❤ would I need to add any more if I wanted to fit something snug into it . It’s 10” x 8” x 2 inches.
Not sure what you mean. Can you give me more information?
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs hi sorry. I want to make a bag to fit something in at these sizes. I’m not sure what I’d need to add onto it to account for the squaring.
If it's 10" high when finished, and 8" wide and over-all base of 2", you'll want to cut your fabric at 11" high x 10" wide and use oneinch boxed corners (it will give you 2") then add seam allowance. Try it on paper first to see how it fits😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs brilliant thank you. It’s so simple now you have said it but for the life of me I couldn’t work it out 🤦♂️
Hello I was wondering if you could help me figure out my fabric measurements.
I need to make a tote bag, unlined with the finished measurements to be 11 in tall by 11 in wide and a 4.5 in bottom.
And I will turn down the top edge 1 inch, the way you do on your grocery tote bags.
I'm unsure how to cut my fabric pieces. I would also like to make it out of one piece. Could you please help me. Oh and I sew my seams with 1/4 in seams.
Jennifer, I'd try it out with a 29" piece of paper x 13 1/2". I'm out of action after surgery for a few more weeks, so can't test it out 😊 Tape it together and test it
so the depth basically double therefore it will shorten your bag by that much? hope that makes sense
Yes, that's correct. It will be shorter and narrower by the amount of the boxed corners
