Anything that is a bulky item like that, you must charge an additional fee for. Just make sure that all your customers know about the additional fees coming up, so that you cover your butt legally. Make sure that all your customers digitally sign the agreement of the additional fees as well. Yeah, I watch a lot of Judge Judy, so trust me on this, its the right way to do it. lol

@@BakerCountyTrashPickup Hey Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care! 👋
I’m 14 and just started my own pressure washing business called Eastern NC Pressure Wash. I’m looking for some advice on the best equipment to use. Right now, I’m considering getting a gas pressure washer, surface cleaner, and some good nozzles and chemicals. Any tips on what to look for or what to avoid? Thanks a lot!

    • @joshuahill6153

@@LCSOs Pressure washing unlike lawn mowing for us youngsters poses greater liability and risk. If you fall, no insurance, if you damage tiles/surfaces you have no liability insurance/binding contracts unless your parents pay for all of the paperwork/LLC/LTD. Too much hassle for our age. I started lawn mowing at 14 and never once had any issues regarding problems that can occur pressure washing. I accumulated 2-4,000 in savings over 2 years of about 5-10 client mowing a month. It is a great money maker that poses less liabilities than pressure washing. I am now 17 and have slowed my business back because school got in the way, don't try and make school work around you, most classes will help you understand finance/business a lot better when your older. High-school is important for most ambitions in life. Helps convince banks/business stakeholders that you are committed to them because you committed to becoming educated or something like that.
I also recommend never cheapening on equipment regardless of what you are going to do if it is pressure washing, mowing, or detailing. I've wasted loads of money buying inferior not name brand mowers and weed eaters. Stihl and Husqvarna are my recommendations. Safety goggles and a good quality pair of earmuffs and protective clothing is important. You only have good hearing once, good eyesight once. Every older person has told me to keep these safe.
Never try and price yourself down either because you are young and you want a job, people will try to take advantage of your age and haggle. Give them your price and stick to it, most will accept. Price your worth. I have pushed a few clients away because of my pricing, but that is their loss. I want to do a quality mow and take pride in that. If you want a bad job for cheap, no thanks go find someone else.
As for marketing, community facebook groups and some cheap business cards (1 sided, name contact details and service area) will be all you will need. Word of mouth and facebook was 90% of my jobs. Business cards got me a few clients and it is nice to leave a few to some clients who want to talk to neighbours/friends about your services. Facebook is where most of the older homeowners roam which would be ideal for your business model, also facebook has parents etc who want to support the youth etc. I did not spend a cent on marketing besides business cards, 500 for $30.

17:32 I live in Germany and a tv getting thrown in normal trash and then get burried on a landfill just seems ridiculous to me.
Watching you drive to the landfill every week in this series, really gives me to think about how far we have come in our country in terms of recycling and waste management already, even if some people are still protesting that it isnt enough.
Realizing that such a big and modern industry nation like the US still throws most of their trash just away instead of recycling or burning it, really blowed my mind.

You should know…the truck will explode on you too…while you’re running the blade or tipping a can and not standing in just the right place. When tipping a very heavy can…after a party or holiday get together, you’re going to start breaking the cans and the metal bars are going to pop off when using a tipper. Keep that in mind so you’ve got spares.
To make the cost of a truck more worth it to you, offer bulky pick ups. Couches, furniture, whatever for a small fee. Check the competitors pricing structures to see what the fees are, if any more, picking up anything extra(if it doesn’t fit in the can).

My apologies if these were already covered in previous videos, but:
    - What do you do with the green waste from your lawn care business?
    - Why don’t you stack your carts when you deliver them to new customers? Toters specifically can be stacked with the wheels on and it seems like it would save some space.
    - How do you contact customers to let them know of service disruptions (like collecting a day later as a result of the hurricane)?

Great video, thanks for the entertainment! I like your goal of just getting to a size where you can run it on your own without needing to hire staff or worry about becoming yet another waste industry empire. FWIW there's a local hauler that serves a few of the suburbs near me. They've been in business for decades, and just run 1 truck for trash, and a smaller one for recycle. (that service is a requirement here) Their competitors are WM, Republic, and a few other major local haulers. Yet they hold their own in the open market area they serve and do a nice job. As long as you can continue with honest direct pricing without a bunch of fees, provide good service and have great customer service, you will be fine. Keep doing what works best for you and take care of the customer. I hope the new trash truck works well when that happens!
I am curious, have you found any squirrel damage on your cans yet? Around here they are notorious for chewing holes through lids or the rim on the city and hauler cans to get inside when they smell food.

I’ve always appreciated your feedback to the comments in the channel because you don’t bullshit us, and get straight to the point so I appreciate that, and appreciate you don’t sugar coat stuff. The trailer thing, that’s basically a commercial compactor that your typical Roll Off Truck would handle except in trailer form and I believe is a stupid expensive if you’re looking to buy a garbage truck. You’d rather just save it up for the truck especially if you need a CDL. 11:16 Gotcha good didn’t it 😂? My tip to you, always bring an extra shirt with you because the juice is bound to get you sooner or later. From experience, it absolutely sucks so bring an extra shirt to change out. 21:32 WM won’t come back. WM is known for abandoning areas based off their incomes. Because it’s more rural, WM is spending more of vehicle costs, fuel, ect and that likely was making them lose money in the long run so they pulled the plug. Once they do, it’s almost never gonna happen to see them again in the area. Big corporations are only out for the money. Loose it, and they pull out and leave everyone in the dust. As for holidays, charge a minor fee to collect extras that are just ridiculous and charge for disposal. I can tell you, you’re probably likely to make 2 trips to the dump. Can’t wait for that garbage truck!

29:30 I work in Sales/acquisition and I think you should definitly do more door to door.
I am sure investing some afternoons/evening in going from door to door to say hello in person and make them know about your business and what you are offering would pay off.
Talking face to face is often the most effective way. Having to contact you (after seeing an ad online or in their mailbox) and decide to invest 10 minutes to switch/make a new contract sounds like a small thing, but is still something many people only decide to do if they are really unhappy with their current situation. By talking to them face to face, you give them a way smaller entry hurdle.
And everyone you dont manage to win as customer after visiting them the first time, you have to visit again every 3-4 months, tell them again you would really like to make business with them and ask why they still arent your customer or what you have to do to find together.
They will recognize you driving around in your truck, seeing you are doing good work and especially if you have competetive pricing as well, one they you are visiting them again they will agree.

    • @Deleted_Channel1
      @Deleted_Channel1 6 місяців тому +1

There isn’t a need for a CDL. I think that’s close to what Brad is trying to get to. I’ve been throwing bags and driving for over 28 years now, and I must say, if you have a big company then yes.
However, if you take Brads business perspective, if he wants to set out and cap it off at 200, there’s no need for a CDL. Based off the time it takes him to do the route now, and assuming he will cap his routes at 200, You can certainly do the entire route with an Under CDL truck because now he can pack the trash and get more out of the payload. If he can get 100 cans in the truck before having to dump, that works out to be roughly 4-5 hours of work getting in and out to service the cans, assuming the cans aren’t back to back. If he chooses to split it into 2 route days, he can do 100 Monday and the other 100 on Tuesday or Wednesday, still work the same hours and have to dump once. Now if he wanted to get it done in 1 day, it’s possible however you’d have to make 2 loads that’s same day which adding on the time to go to the dump and back to route could make it an 8-10 hour day. So based off my experience, Brads business perspective works just fine and it would be a waste of his time to get a CDL when he can buy an under CDL truck, get bigger payloads even if it means having to dump twice a day or two service route days.

Thanks for the feedback! I cover this some in today's video and deleted channel is mirroring my thoughts pretty closely. I think now that we have a truck 200 isn't enough long term (it takes about 100 to pay all my monthly expenses) so looking at 400 total (nothing final yet and don't have enough info to make a decision), but yes, a few trips a day over two days should get it done with what we have. I could be wrong, though!

I'm for the garbage truck you are researching in the video. If you need the space or can't use the dump trailer for other projects sell it to offset some of the additional costs. I'm curious as to how many yards the garbage truck can hold once it's compacted as compared to the dump trailer. I believe you stated the dump trailer is 14 yards and the garbage truck is 8 yards. Depending upon the compaction limits of the garbage would the garbage truck hold the equivalent 16, 20 or more yards of uncompacted garbage?

    • @BakerCountyTrashPickup
      @BakerCountyTrashPickup  5 місяців тому +1

Excellent question! I honestly don't know yet. It may be more of a weight based question than volume. For instance, it holds 8 yards compacted at ~600 pounds (on the low end) of compacted trash per yard. 4,800 pounds of trash? Last week I had 43 stops and hurricane rains made everything wet. I had like 2500 pounds in the trailer. So that would just be double that the garbage truck could hold over the trailer. But if everything wasn't soaking wet (lids flipped open during Hurricane Debby and rains filled the cans) maybe it would have only been 2,000 pounds or 1700 pounds and the garbage truck would have a larger ratio?
Not sure I'm explaining that well, will try to better in voiceover next week.

  • @JqwsXD

There are some potential workarounds for the CDL aspect of the trailer. The manufacturer of the trailer can derate the rating to 15k or 14k or whatever before they sell it. Additionally, I think the salesman was correct saying you can tow it legally with a 3/4 ton. Many trucks have a 10,000-9,500 lb GVWR to get around the CDL requirement for 16k trailers. If you look at some commercial GM/Ford dealers, a lot of the trucks say “10k gvwr package” for that exact reason.

I agree with you on the trailer stand point from owning a lot, a stand alone truck is 100% easier to maneuver and way better if you do have to get a driver to fill in. Also on tight or small roads you might have issues turning around a big truck and trailer…

Brad.. you spoke so many great things in this video, and I am all aboard with your thinking! And, I will pitch in, Another reason it would be great to get a garbage truck, is that you would save so much money, rather than getting these “temporary solution trailers” that are just too expensive for the disadvantages they bring. This week's question

  • @Fayettepropertysolutions

Trailer can be derated to be able to be pulled behind your truck no issue. Lots of ways around that factor actually.
Brad, we’ve spoke before and I’m a pretty big fan of yours. However, I can’t help but notice a trend in the trash videos where the majority of your commentary is talking about why you can’t do this, can’t do that, answering this negative comment, answering that negative comment.
I think you either need to continue to embrace your current setup or switch gears and make a move to make yourself productive and most importantly, profitable.
I love your determination and the content, but this trash series definitely doesn’t showcase your “can do attitude” as well as it has in the past, at least when listening to your commentary.

Because it's a waste disposal business in a county with very few options for such services. It's just a matter of time until he gets flooded with work and will begin turning down profit.
But why not provide jobs for the community and help your neighbors. All while making a profit. "Three birds, one stone" . He may be better off doing dumpster rentals at this point.

Hey Brad, I had that moment last year when know you have to get the next piece of equipment to make it easier on you. Last year I used my 36” belt drive walk behind to get my mowing business started and end of July when we had near 100 degree weather for weeks it seemed like I would get home just beat like almost throwing up beat. I knew I needed a stand on or sit down zero turn for this year and got a 52” Vride 2 and doubled my business in the process picking up a $200/cut client while renting a storage unit and another 175/cut client off of a FaceBook ad I was too lazy to delete which I would not of been able to service with my walkbehind and those clients paid for the mower twice now. You could call it destiny by picking up the bigger piece of equipment or you could call it luck. I know this is no where the comparison you are looking at but you could tell my how skeptical my wife was.

I would invest on the compact trailer at 200 can you will need it .. the good thing on a trailer is if the unit your hualing goes down you can hook up a back up vehicle and finish your route .. you can always training your wife to drive a trailer but if your garbage truck goes down your business stops as well …

Question- you mention you’re nearing the point where your trailer is getting full on your route. Have you planned how your route(s) will look when you get to that magic #? Like I believe you’re around 30/35 accounts now. Say trailer gets completely full when you get to account 50. So when you get that 51st account do you plan to divide the route in half completely or how does that look for ya? Not sure what’s practical for your area.
Also you have mentioned about being able to build up the side walls. Realistically how much bigger can ya get and if you did build up the side walls how many accounts roughly do you think you could accommodate with a single run?

In regards to your comments about bungy's. I can see the positive of them but in reality you dont need huge bungy cords. You could simply grab 1 corner of the liner and cinch it tight and use a small rubber band on that 1 corner to keep the liner tight on the can. Might take you 10 sec per liner you put in and when you pull them off its just a rubber band so you can either try to reuse it or just toss it with the liner.

It has to do with State Licensing because they break up the GVWR with the truck and trailer is separate pieces so like here in California I can drive a truck that weighs 26,000 lb or less and pull a trailer that weighs 10,000 lb or less GVWR and that falls under a non-commercial regular license so that may be why the salesman said you don't need a CDL however since that trailer is 16 kg GVW here in California that would be over the 10K and would require a full class A CDL

I've thought about that and will address it in a future video. But the reality is if I can only fit 50 cans in the trailer and I have X00 cans out, it will likely make more sense to just delay everyone and focus on fixing the truck or going to get a rental rather than try to take 4X as long to finish the route and then still need to fix the truck. I could be wrong, just my initial thoughts. Also there is a place in town I can rent a dump trailer from for ~$300 a day, so it may make more sense to just do that if needed.
