All your hard work has paid off and patience too because it took a while to find what you loved. We will take bottom room on right so bulldogs have easy access outside!! Proud of you Drew. You deserve this. ❤️mom
Absolutely stunning. I love the fact that you didn’t go for the typical ultra modern LA home. Your place feels is beautiful but it still feels like a home and has a great deal of character.
@@rubyredjeans I agree - your excitement is so palpable Drew. You deserve this and so much more. You are an incredible designer and a genuinely sweet person.
Gorgeous! A friend of mine who bought a 1920s Spanish house in LA had the same issue as you about the bathroom but did some research and found a company that does reproductions of 1920s Spanish home tiles. She was able to both restore and renovate her bathroom at the same time, and it’s gorgeous! Perhaps you could do the same?
Thank you for pointing this out. Too often people freak out over broken tiles and default to: THE BATH NEEDS TO BE GUTTED! OH NO! This is absurd, as any damaged tiles can be sourced and replaced. Ditto for period fixtures.
I was just about to comment that there are a couple (at least) superb tile artisans in the L.A. area/Socal. They would be able to make these spaces SHINE! I hope he can live with all of the tile work, even the kitchen. It's only original once!
For the “bounce” of the red from the neighboring house, you can add a blue light filter film on you windows. It’s just like the film you put on car windows to tint them but it will be a UV filter and you can get it with a light blue tint. You won’t really notice the color difference when you you through them, but it will strongly cut the red/orange of the house next door. Plus it will keep your furniture, wall paint, art, etc. from fading and UV damage. Oh, and it’s a cheap diy project.
I was going to suggest the film as well. I use a 35% gey tint, which it does not even look or "feel" different as you can still see outside, yet! helps considerably with cutting down the sun rays & heat.
if it's a blue light filter, it will make things more warm-toned though? a blue light filter is typically slightly yellow because it's the complementary colour. yes to a blue-tinted (and UV-filtering( film however because that will have the opposite effect I suppose 🤗
This house is LOADED with charm and personality! Whatever you end up doing, PLEASE don't get rid of the arched medicine cabinets or the original doors. I'm sure you'd be sad to see the original windows that were replaced.. LOVE this home and so happy for you!
The house is absolutely gorgeous!!! You’ll take such amazing care of it and turn it into an absolute paradise! And we can’t to see every step of the way!! Congrats hun! ❤️🙌
I have to encourage you to preserve the tiled rooms as much as possible! They are such a distinct feature of the house’s period and you can do a lot with reglazing if for example you wanted to go from yellow to white.
Agreed. Don't pull out that tile. Please figure out a way to work with it. That pink and green bathroom is TDF. I can see that all the tile is mismatched but there are definitely sources for the tile colors and style that you need, especially out in LA where this kind of architecture was very popular. I actually HATE the renovated kitchen and bath in the upper unit. Please don't do that! It looks like tacky fake castle for a mcmansion in the suburbs. To think they pulled out art deco tile to do that. SMH.
BATHROOMs: get a professional to carefully remove the pink tiles in the guest bath, then go as modern as you want in there. they are probably the same color as the main bath, replace the broken and yellow tiles and embrace the pink! You can put a shower head and glass folding wall to make the main bathroom more useable without changing the charm of the existing 20s bathroom. KITCHEN keep the patterned pencil trim and swap the yellow for marble or granite. I think the floor is original linoleum and can be brought back to life, it really feels original. There is a place in LA that has restoration/ reclaimed tiles so you can check there too.
I was thinking the same thing. Definitely think Drew should modernize that guest bathroom and reuse the tiles to repair the primary bathroom and kitchen as needed!
Yes! I was thinking the same. If he could try to save as many of them as possible and maybe do an accent wall in one of the bathroom with them. I think it would look great!
For the backyard: plant a tree! That way, you can see how long you already live in the space if you see the tree grow :) Also think about hiring a garden architect and ripping out some of the concrete. There's so much potential for a green heaven with lots of nature for insects and small animals!
@@batterbury4477 it doesn't have to be a lawn since those are awful for the environment. Just a few garden beds or a tiny rock garden for more greenery instead of concrete.
@@batterbury4477 cement actually contributes to drought more than plain dirt, because it doesn't allow the water to go into the soil, just creates toxic runoff (from any debris/oil/liquid on cement) and promotes flooding when it does rain. The best thing for drought is to get rid of cement and if you still want hardscape do permeable hardscape flagstone, gravel, mulch, etc. We need the water in the soil to replenish ground water and in turn will help the drought. And there are many native plants that won't take much water, just heavy mulch to retain winter rains and water once a month in the summer if that. And collecting water from rooftop to rain barrels can help with that, I collected 350gal in 30 min of rain in CA. Roots in the soil helps water retention as well. Plants aren't the enemy of the drought, cement and the wrong plants are for consumers.
What about an above the ground jacuzzi oasis with side wet bar small outdoor dining/ kitchen area for outdoor entertainment. Trees and plants for backdrop or vining plants with pergola or arbor look. Best of both worlds small corner for entertainment and ample privacy parking spaces.
@@batterbury4477 There is ways to design food forests in the jordan desert, where there is almost no rain. (go see "greening the desert" by Geoff Lawton for more info) I am sure if you dig a little into food forest design you can turn that backyard into a heaven without using that much water.
I love the way you appreciate craftsmanship and unique pieces, even if they’re ultimately not for you. You comment on what you like and don’t like without being overly judgmental. You don’t go around saying “this is so ugly!” I really respect this about you because you find beauty everywhere!
I agree. I kept thinking about the people who had renovated the home before / lived in the home before and hoped their feelings weren't hurt! But he was very kind in every comment he made. "That's not my vibe" is not at all judgmental :)
Don’t usually comment but silently screaming with delight as i watch the tour… so in love with this home and all the character! I love how it isn’t your typical style but that you’re totally open to preserving it while still making it your own. It’s going to push you even further as a designer! I can’t wait to see what you make of this!
I have two suggestions. First, for the bounce back "red room", what about painting it a shade of green? According to color theory, green is opposite red, so it would absorb the light instead of reflect ("bounce") the light from your neighbor's house and green is always a fun color to play with. Second, what about sanding down and refinishing the beams downstairs to match the original beams? You could probably create a stencil or something for the beautiful artwork on the dark beams. That way, the house would match itself again. 😊 Just a thought.
Lucky you, having so many Art Deco lamps. Don't throw away the one in the kitchen it's very special. Put it somewhere else. Your happiness is very refreshing. I wish you the best in your own paradise house.
Ugh! This house is so devastatingly beautiful - there's something new around every corner. The hallways! The ceiling! The stairs! Incredible. I know the pink bathroom is way outside of your aesthetic, but I love it so so much. Congratulations, this is a mind-blowing home. I can't wait to see what you do with it.
@@lonefox I hope you do restore and preserve the historic details that make heritage houses special. I have a 1920s Tudor and I enjoy all the quirks, including the distinct rooms and original wood windows. You should watch “Restored” with Brett Waterman on Discovery, he does amazing restoration work and explains the history of different LA architectural styles !
@@lonefox YES!! Pleaseee keep it and embrace the character that comes with the age! I admire the cracked tiles! What if for the bounce back of lighting from the neighbors house, you contact a window tinting company and ask for their opinion? There may be something that will reflect that color back outward! The back yard SCREAMS to match the vibes of the courtyard. Small pool with fancy fountains, maybe lion heads or fancy ladies? Fun, handmade tiles? And some nice sod with pavers!
@@SpooderCace I agree about the cracked tile, it means that house was lived in and it has history. Just because it’s cracked doesn’t means it’s broken. Even the mismatched tile just means more history about the people that loved the house and wanted to keep it tru to the era.
For the kitchen tiles, I know the colour combo is quite unusual (especially nowadays), but a good tip is to find artwork that combines the colours in order to help blend them better. Also, I'm getting major Grand Budapest Hotel vibes. Maybe you could test with contact paper first, because something that old (almost 100 years) is irreplaceable. Once it's gone, it's gone. Maybe you could find a vintage wallpaper for some of the cabinet fronts that combines the green and the yellow.
I think he could really modernize it with the marble and still honor the original green and black and original designs. I definitely recommend keeping as many tiles to repurpose them in a different way. Would love to see that project.
@@dmears06 no need to fix something that isn't broke. Modernising isn't always a must and it would be a pity to destroy something so old on a whim. Especially because there's the upstairs one that is identical but not historical to test things out on.
If you do one room per month, you've got enough rooms to last about a year and a half without repeating. You're gonna have SO MUCH FUN with this house!
when i saw the pink bathroom i literally gasped, is beautiful! i hope you can keep it as it is, maybe fix some stuff, but god i loved it! the whole house is just so beautiful and with so much character! i'm looking forward to all the changed you're gonna make
I know…I’m hurting at the idea of a young person ruining a historical bathroom just because they don’t like the tile… Not everything has to be transformed. The entire point would be to preserve the history and find tile that could work with the existing ones. Really hurts my heart.
@@lonefox As I’m only about 4 min in I am sure there’s sooo much more to come but here’s my 2cents: Drew, I can’t think of anyone ( besides MaCenna!)who would treat this house as respectfully ! You fell in love Because of all the charm and details of this beauty, and you have this ‘before’ tour video as a touchstone to refer back to when tempted to make changes. We all look forward to your vision becoming reality making this into Your home. 🙏👍❤️ Fan From Florida 🌴
Agreed! I am a purist and cannot stand it when people buy beautiful historic homes, gut them, and make them modern inside! I don’t get it. I love, love the original kitchen and bathrooms in the downstairs unit and equally despise the ugly (sorry, but that dark tile and granite are hideous) modernized kitchen and bathrooms upstairs!
This home has the most amazing character. New homes lack this. This was when quality was what mattered. Those fixtures wow. Tiles of that age would have lost their grip by now on some of the mortar. I’m excited to see what you bring to this while maintaining the integrity of the home.
Honestly this house is really nice as-is! I was expecting more of a fixer-upper, but it's beautiful. I can only imagine how many millions of dollars this must have cost.
It really is! I was planning to purchase more of a fixer upper but a couple that I toured I wasn’t able to get a loan on as they were too much in a state of needing fixed. This one I decided to offer extremely low and I happened to get the home really close to my offer!
@@lonefox so proud of you!!! You are such a hardworking person. Well done. I can not wait to see what you do with this house ♥️♥️♥️ may you make millions of happy memories in your new beautiful home
@@lonefox It's is an excellent investment. Such a smart move and you are amazingly brave to just step-up and say" This is what I want and I'm going to make it work" - and YOU DID!
I love how you embrace the bones and uniqueness of this home. The quality of craftmenship in these old beauties are not seen in newer homes. Seeing a young adult embrace it's uniqueness while modernizing and keeping its integrity is appreciated.
From an interior designer, this home has SO much potential and I cant wait to watch what you do with it. If you ever have the means to go about a full reno to create one large home and bust down walls and open things up, you could seriously create a jaw dropper. Paint recommendation to offset that red, try to look for a white paint with a slightly green undertone. That will hopefully help to neutralize the red!
My vote/opinion: Keep as much of the pink tile in both those floor-level bathrooms as you can! I'm not sure if there's a way to find that tile again and match it exactly. I'd also say repurpose whatever tile you don't keep on the walls (if it CAN be repurposed in anyway). I also think those light fixtures in the different rooms should be kept as is (even if they get moved to different rooms than the ones they're in) or sold to people who can use them as is in their own homes.
Most of the arch cut outs in a kitchen or in a room used to be for a statue, and even in the old old times in history, a skull was placed in the cut out arch along with like a vase of flowers, some coins and a candle and things for their ancestors that had crossed over. It was very important to them. I love that house Drew. I'm totally in love with it and I just can't wait for you to get ahold of it. It's one of the most beautiful homes I've ever seen.
I would include Busts in rooms that did not allow statues this will also define the general theme of homes decor of this era. They could be styled on fireplace mantles or display stands or shelves. The home features are everything. I’m in love with this home. Congratulations your taste is impeccable.
Gorgeous home! For the backyard: I'd remove as much of the concrete as possible (if not all, because it's in a really sad state tbh), maybe pool in the future, who knows 😉 But definitely look into what kinds of plant do well in LA climate - find a suitable ground cover that is not classic lawn (not good for the bees and uses tons of water). I'd use as little of the space for parking as humanly possible and do a visual divide between that and the rest of the space.
I totally agree👍🏼👍🏼 You need some some life in there. And big pots with plants will look a bit too fake. Lovely seating area with fire place in the middle maybe :)
So beautiful! Based on general color theory I believe you can cancel out the orange reflection by painting it the opposite color on the color wheel. To cancel orange, paint it blue (or blue undertone), to cancel red, paint the room with green (or green undertone). It could even just be a subtle tone that would make a huge difference!
The way you lit up was beautiful! You're gonna have a ball fixing your new home up just the way you want it & we get to experience it right along with you! CONGRATULATIONS DREW!
I am so jealous of those butler pantries! You never see those anymore. The light fixtures are an absolute gift! Please keep all of them - restore/renovate/recondition them as needed - they are a treasure. The house is beautiful Drew!
Drew, I'm so excited for you! That house is just so you. I'm so glad you got a historic home with lots of character. For the rooms that are reflecting the red house next door, I have some suggestions. I'm an indie dyer (I dye yarn and spinning fibers) and color is something I work with all the time. Personally, I would try to embrace the situation and make the best of it. You could paint those rooms in any shade that would be complimentary. Think clay, terracotta, some corals and peach colors (some of those are historic for the era of your home), rusts, brick reds. I tend to find my color inspirations mostly from natural things. You can also use any color that might benefit from a red cast on it, like some lilacs, purples and pinks, or things that might appear to have a red undertone with the red light on them, like mahogany, if you're feeling like trying a really deep tone (there's a lot of light in those rooms, I think any of them could easily handle a really dark wall color for a kind of "dark academia" look) and then decorate with lots of plants and lighter woods and wickers. I would steer away from colors that are opposite red on the color wheel, like greens. They might appear dull and muddy (though I admit, I work with pigment, not light, and this situation uses both). Unless that's what you are going for, then use it to your advantage. You could probably use some yellows, but you'll really have to sample. If you go more golden honey toned, it might look rich and have some depth and nuance, and if you go with a super light duckling type color, you might get a very burnt orange look or might look like the blush on a ripe peach. I'm really looking forward to all the renovations and decorating, Drew!
Even though we can't see your family, I can feel that they are proud of you in every way, I really watch everything you do with admiration, I hope I can find the strength to do these things. ❤️❤️❤️
Drew, you will be the perfect person to put the complete beauty back into this home! Top suggestions from me as a couple other commenters said, check for asbestos before ripping out the black and white floor tile and have an appraiser come in or send pics to have all of your light fixtures appraised. The ones you don’t want and especially the ones you’ll keep for insurance purposes. I agree w all the ‘keep the pink’ bathroom suggestions;). Meet your neighbors (or stalk on Zillow) and see how they updated/restored their 1920’s bathrooms and kitchens. Keep the hardware from the original kitchen (I really don’t have to tell you this do I😂) and save those cute little kitchen drawers to use/refurbish and style elsewhere. Would white shears keep the pink out of your bedroom reflecting from the neighbors house? Like your idea for pool in the backyard as well as the commenter who suggested a small pool. I’m thinking a small round pool or kidney shaped-not my favorite but somehow in my head it seems to fit your yard? Definitely a place to park that’s created with a small amount of concrete or pavers with lots of grass/ground cover (in between the pavers). Taking out all of the concrete is going to be a nice start. Lastly, (I think) I agree with swapping ideas w Mr. Kate:) I also follow and love Nina Takesh from The Red Elevator who is in Beverly Hills. Good luck, happy journey. Thank you for sharing💝
These ideas are incredible. I'd also watch this episode from Windy City Rehab where Allison Victoria restored a vintage Spanish Style home in the Hollywood Hills for some inspiration. ua-cam.com/video/2V3ptYYUvn4/v-deo.html
As far as the 1920 bathrooms, you can have custom tiles made to match the original tiles! Please save the bathrooms if you restore the original features you could save the historical value of this gorgeous home you now own and show what a fabulous designer you truely are by restoring a loving historical home honoring the past that we are losing so insanely trashed into obviousness to the new garbage heaps of crap! I ❤️ your style, the videos are stunning 😍 !
DREW this house is CRAZY! I’m obsessed. I’d love to see you do a landscape sketch or rendering for the backyard, and also get some concepts done by landscape architects/designers and see how they compare. They may give you some ideas you never even thought about! Congratulations on everything!
Drew, it’s just amazing what you have accomplished at such a young age. You are a very hard working, focused, dedicated young man. I can’t wait to see this transformation as you have such great decorating style 😃 Congratulations again Drew 🎉
Drew, you’ve purchased a magnificent house with beautiful architectural details! Can’t wait to see what you do with your gorgeous home! You’re a visionary, so it will be spectacular! The courtyard is absolutely full of character & the fountain is so tranquility inducing! Can’t wait for you to fill it with plants and a few seating nooks, as it’s a great place to gather for cocktails & stargazing with friends! The light in your home is absolutely uplifting & brilliant for growing house plants! Please consider visiting a few architectural, hardware & lighting restoration shops for period-appropriate tiles, lighting, hardware, etc. before beginning renovations. The charm of your house is in its period details! Most of the lighting in the house is funky, but fussy & not of the era. The upstairs beams are stunning, so perhaps consider darkening the beams downstairs & having a stencil artist stencil those beams like the ones upstairs to unify the details. You’re spot on in your assessment of the upstairs kitchen & bathroom renovations. 1920s era tiles will transform those rooms! Thanks for giving us a tour. We’re looking forward to witnessing your journey! Be well. Stay safe. Peace & abundant blessings to you!
Ohhh I love that idea of stenciling the downstairs beam!!! I could probably even trace over the design upstairs and have a stencil created to match exactly!
@@lonefox Sounds like a good plan. The trick will be in the subtlety of the paint shades. Another person who commented is an indie dye artist. She may be able to give you suggestions on colors that may match. If you can get very clear photos (mid-day w/ great lightening), you may be able to get an idea of paint shades to match. You may have to experiment several times with sample mixes until you come up with just the right tones. I suggest taking it slow with a thin layer, letting it dry completely, then building it layer-by-layer to get the perfect shade. Too bright and it could come off as garish. Should be fun!
I once toured a 1920's spanish style home in my California home town. I've never forgotten it because it was SO BEAUTIFUL. It could be the little brother of your house. When you renovate bathrooms and kitchens, I hope you will embrace the origins of the house in your own stylish updated way. About the red house/orange room: you know the complement of red is green, so I think the solution is in choosing a paint color with a green undertone. You'll find the right one. And as for the backyard, I know water is a perennial problem in California, so I would just put in a quality faux grass where you want grass. AND, anywhere you want paving, go with terra cotta-look pavers or concrete. Keep the spanish influence going. I know you will make it beautiful. Question: Was this always a duplex?
What a great idea with the faux grass! Drew should check out Galey Alix, Designer to see how she used the faux grass on her home. I think Drew could rock it just as amazingly!
Faux grass is actually really bad for the environment, especially with climate change and more heatwaves coming our way. I would suggest going for grass but look into more durable grass seeds as faux grass heats up almost thrice as much as normal grass and normal grass is great for insects and bees! Plant plants that are local to the area and it will help the planet, bees and insects and will survive the heat :)
or plant trees that can take the dry climate and sun, and sow grass around them. It'll be tough at first, he might need to install a sun sail so they don't shrivel up when they are still small - OR he could get trees that are already bigger transplanted, there are companies who specialise in this. It's more costly, but you'll immediately have some nice shade and ambience. + Trees contain much more co2 / help clear the air than grass alone. I'd probably go for palm trees, maybe canarian palm trees, since they are pretty resistant to all kinds of weather.
If there's room to plant Italian cypress trees in between your house and the red house to block the orange reflection I think that would look really nice and add privacy as well as some nature.
Even though there might be a lot of renovations to make, there is so so much architectural charm in this home. I am so excited for you! I cannot wait to see what this becomes and to watch the journey :')
I absolutely love the tile in the first kitchen, especially the green. I love the look of 1920s kitchens and bathrooms! It's said that the bathroom tile is broken because I love it too! The whole house is so beautiful! In the yard, I'd add a pool and an outdoor kitchen!
Love this, can’t wait to see more and all the reno that’s gonna be amazing !!!!! Regarding the backyard, please, please do some green, plants, trees… this all white area in LA must be soooo hot + sun reflecting in the house, it’s giving me sweat haha, having nature back there will help naturally cool off the house a bit (less AC, better for your electric bill and the planet, we love)
This space is so insanely beautiful - I'm so happy both for you and us viewers, because we are in for some prime content! Personally, I'd always go for the pool area in the backyard, maybe with a bit of grass/trees growing on the fringes, and a small deck to sit and relax. I know parking is a necessary evil when you live in car-centric places like LA. But maybe you could use just a small part of the back yard and install a short driveway there from the street + a car port and maybe some screen walls that hide the car from view, so it doesn't visually disturb the rest of the backyard's vibes.
Stunning! Many congratulations Drew. Please, oh please, turn that backyard into an oasis. Trees and greenery beats concrete. A friend of mine opted for a pond for fish instead of a pool in his yard. That could be fun too!
Hi Drew, I have an idea for the orangy refection on your walls from the neighboring redhouse: On the color wheel, red and green make brown. You like green, perhaps there is a shade of green that you can use that will soften the orange. Perhaps as a shear curtain or paint on the walls. It might be fun to play with! I hope this is helpful! I love so many of your ideas!!
I don't know how long it will take you to renovate this beautiful place, but it will be well worth the wait to see you make this place your own! I'm so happy for you - even more happy for us to get to see you "Lone Fox" this space up!!!!
I’m definitely team authentic! Whatever can be saved should. I’m so surprised this has sooo much original character especially since it had formerly been a rental. I know safety and structural sound should be first and foremost! But the butler’s pantry and beautiful wood original tile keepers in my opinion.
@@lonefox I figured you would.. I think you’ll be very happy you did as you enjoy changing things up you know you’ll always have a beautiful timeless back drop to start from. Can’t wait for the journey 😊
what a stunning place! I loved the house and I hope that you will try to keep as much of its historical character as possible. The pink bathroom absolutely should stay in my opinion. It is what will make your house so special and different, and also differentiate your content from other youtube DYIers or renovation channels. I think the upstairs earlier renovation shows that you can loose a lot by removing the historical features. The kitchen downstairs might be a bit tired but it's just SO pretty compared to the upstairs. It could also be super interesting for your channel to start sourcing artisans who use the same methods as in the 1920's for the tiles, glass work etc.
These were my exact thoughts as well - buying historic properties comes with a huge responsibility for the original features. Upstairs has already been ruined, so it can be renovated and redecorated. Downstairs *must* be kept original and should be a restoration event to rival any other YT channel. There are plenty of businesses out there to work with who specialise in heritage properties, and collabs with other people who work in renovation social media (like Cheap Old Houses) can bring a whole new audience and exposure. This house is a content goldmine LOL Drew please keep downstairs original!!! Pleeeaaaase 🥺 😭
Omg! I don’t know what I would do with this space, since it has so many original cool, beautiful and impractical features and I could never touch that, since I have such respect for history.
Congratulations on your beautiful home. Please consider leaving the original yellow tiles in the kitchen. The fact that they are almost 100 years old is so special. Its historical and authentic, a time capsule and once its gone its gone for ever. As the upstairs unit has already been modernised its not as important to keep it authentic so you can be more creative. Like you say, the units are mirrors of each other. I think its really special that you are looking at the same kitchen that people 100 years ago also looked at. You are very lucky to be able to experience it.
In the 80s my husband and I lived in a Wilshire district art deco era building where the bathroom had very similar tile as your bathrooms; lavender and black tile, built ins, etc. We just went with it, found art work and deco era accessories and used black and white towels and rugs. Everyone who saw it said it was cool. Your home is amazing and I wish you a happy journey as you Lone Foxify the crap out of it! ❤
Did I just miss were the room mates room was going to be ? Oh my Drew that place is gorgeous and meant to be yours ! Can't wait for all the new projects ! Sure is good to see you this happy congratulations!
Congratulations, Drew! Love all the original features in your house (tile, wooden beams, arches, hardwood floors!). So much character! Also, very smart to buy a duplex so you have the option of rental income in the future.
This is a dream! Until I was 5, my parents and I lived in the guest house to a 1926 Spanish Art-Deco mansion near Ojai, Ca. I had full run of the property, insanely gorgeous and tasteful, inside and out. Just the Lady owner, and the 3 of us. She traveled most of the time. The grounds were full of amazing things. Oak trees, bricked long driveway, a creek, an empty diving pool 15 feet deep, no shallow end. The home was so lovely, I dream about it all the time. The rose beige color made it look like a cake to me, I could have taken a bite out of it. Now I’m hoping that you have kept as much tile as possible in your lovely gem. You will never regret it.
As an architect I’m so excited to see the kitchen, scullery and breakfast nook area! The green tiles are stunning!! Would totally get a nice stone (wouldn’t recommend marble but you can get some stunning natural or man made stones) for the surfaces and upstand/backsplash. I would make the main kitchen area more bench top/prep space to open it up a lot and the passage way the oven, fridge, pantry space with the green tile on the opposite wall! I wish I could design this kitchen I love the old tiles so much!!
OMG! I love all the character in your home. But most of all I love how you appreciate it and how you say your keeping certain things. Your not quick to rip everything out and replace with something new. I’m excited to see what you do 😍.

The house is in incredible. Congratulations Drew, you have worked so hard for this and you deserve all of it. I am so excited to see you make this house into a home.
Your new house is amazing! I lived in LA for 15 years, back in 80s and I just loved those older houses, so full of charm and character. Tip for bottom pink bathroom...replace bottom half of tiles (maybe do batten board) and preserve top half of tiles. I'd replace the yellow kitchen tiles downstairs with white granite or marble and retain the green tiles as you say. Some of those funky chandeliers are worth a LOT of money 💰 have an antique dealer appraiser check them out before removing them. They may help you pay for some of the remodeling costs.😉
This house has so much character! The house is a character! ....and needs a name lol but so many beautiful elements, every room has its own personality. All those arches are so beautiful and gives it a comfy moody feel. Congratulations!!! Can't wait to see you work your magic
Hi. I had a similar problem with one of my bathrooms. I found a guy who could remove the tiles without breaking them, so we took them from an entire wall that was just painted later, and we used the removed tiles to place them we're needed. You could try something like that in the pink bathroom to replace those dark pink ones that do not match the rest. Congratulations on your fantastic new home!

I'm in LOVE!! The top floor is so amazing and I actually really love a closed concept home. I admire how every room has a purposeful meaning and isn't one open space. It's more charming! The down stairs needs some Drew magic so I can't wait to watch what your amazing mind does to enhance the charm! 😍 Congratulations!
What a stunning house!! Congratulations! For the backyard I would love to see more greenery like grass, trees, bushes, flower beds etc... Everything you do will be amazing. Have fun
It's a darling home. I love the courtyard with a fountain. You can find lots of plants and pots at yard sales in CA,to fill the courtyard and balconies with plants. I absolutely love all the light fixtures. They are so unique and interesting. You're going to have so much fun decorating. Congrats on being a homeowner!
The house is humongous and absolutely stunning, like a time capsule, full of soul and historic whispers in the walls. ❤️ The backyard is definitely a chance to give back to nature, to rip up at least some of that concrete and invite greenery and critters back in. It's a blank canvas and I cannot wait to see what you do with it!
Backyard - for now just use as a staging area. You will need that space for contractors and supplies and trucks. You could for now-Enjoy that canopy pavilion- make it your luxury outdoor oasis with drapes /rug and sink-in and-nap seating. Later-much later- you have better ideas for backyard. So save your $$$ for now :)
Honestly, I never imagined you’d choose this style home. I’m so happy you did, becuz you can not RE-create this kind of unique character & beauty!! Every last detail was intentional & that makes it even more dreamy. LOVE the green tile in the kitchen & LOVE the pink bathroom! Ya gotta preserve that lady! She’s adorable! The backyard ideas are limitless. Grass would be lovely & lots of tall perimeter trees. In my dreamworld I’d install a koi pond w rocks & mini waterfall…*sigh The light fixtures are all INCREDIBLE! My fave is the downstairs primary bedroom, that bubbly glass @ 7:00 Just WOW!! (& ALL are prob veryyy valuable)!!! And the hallway @ 14:30 is insane. Extending that skylight would be unreal…& the weirder the light fixtures are, the more I love them! I’m super happy you’re not going to gut this architecturally beautiful time capsule & turn it into a modern bore. P.S. I love when the younger generations appreciate the things that others your age would find “ugly”… ex: light fixures, tiles, wood ceiling, archways…basically ALL the character. ❤️ *Oh & the bright red house reflecting your walls…I’m stilllll thinkin. Going back 20+yrs in my mind to art college & color theory courses….the opposite tones would (obv) be shades of green & teal. I’m not sure, in this case, how to apply this concept. Mainly becuz you’re dealing w reflection that’s outta your control. Maybe you can counteract it w those (green/teal) shades used in sheer curtains or a large area rug…..OR ask around bout a type of wall paint & shade that’s better at deflecting. (matte, gloss, semi, etc). I’ll shut up, u know what I’m trying to say. Congrats!!!
Congratulations, Drew! Your new home is absolutely stunning, inside and out! Love ALL of the original tile in the downstairs unit, the butler’s pantry, that grand stairwell, the gorgeous ceiling beams in the upper unit living room (I literally said “Wow!” when you first showed it), the fireplaces, the room off of the living room, the balconies. I am sooooo glad that you will not be knocking down all of the dining room walls! Historic homes did not have open concept. That garnet glass and brass chandelier in the dining room is gorgeous! My husband and I own a beautiful brick bungalow built by the builder of our neighborhood for use as his own home. It has arches on the front porch, as well as inside. I was ecstatic when I saw that the kitchen and bathroom were original! Did you know that back in that era, the cabinetry was custom built on-site?! We have almost the identical tile countertops in our kitchen as are in your downstairs kitchen. We have the same black bullnose trim tile, with a different white and black tile top. We are having to retile the top (with a tile very similar to yours, but white) and have to replace a number of the black trim tiles, but are definitely keeping true to the era of the house. I look forward to seeing you lovingly restore and decorate every space - I am so happy for you! Blessings!❤️
I love how these units look like vintage wealth. You can really see how much character this home has. I absolutely love it. Good job and I am so proud of you and can't wait for renovations
Love the house! So full of character and the antique light pendants and chandelier are gorgeous. The shade thing in the back yard might be good to keep for now if you need to work outside, cutting wood, spray painting etc. Congratulations and enjoy your new home. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do to transform it to your liking.
That weird light at 7:09 freaking love it, it could be perfect to make a cottage style or even fantasy magical like room. Maybe it’s because I’m bored of my space but I’m definitely going to remake my room into an herbalist, apothecary, garden like room worthy of a Hufflepuff. I don’t want dark and scary I want whimsical and bright filled with dry flowers, books, and comfy bed for reading.
Drew I just wanted to say how stoked I am for you! I also bought a house this year and I NEVER want to do it again....so stressful. But I'm hoping watching you reno this space gives me some inspo to DIY more things in my new/old home. You are amazing, glad you are thriving - you deserve this!!!
Congratulations on your new home Drew! So many period features which I can just imagine you bringing to life with taste and elegance. The lamp in the last bedroom looks like it may be a Tiffany. Wishing you all the best always!
Hey Drew, so excited for you. Can’t wait to see your landlord either… He’s not gonna want you to change anything. The apartment is gorgeous. So excited to see what’s coming up in your new home yay! But where is Marie’s room? Can’t wait till the next video
Your new home has so much light, history and charm!! Congrats on this huge achievement - I'd have so many "pinch myself" moments! Excited to continue following your journey
Congrats, Drew! Just want to add be careful when removing those old tiles. Check them for asbestos first and stay safe during reno. Can't wait to see all the new vids.
I’m thrilled that you found. Your home. The way you talk about introducing changes whilst being extremely careful of its period charm deserves nothing but my utmost respect. I cannot wait to be part of your renovation journey. Thank you!
I love so many things about this house! I love the history, the butler's pantry, all the arches, ceiling beams, and light fixtures. I would probably reno pretty much all of the bathrooms. Gorgeous! Excited to see what you do with the backyard as well.
I love all the original features still in this home! For the 1st floor original bathtub, find someone who can refinish it for you (or maybe even find out how to do it yourself from a fellow UA-camr 😊). As for the original tile in the bathrooms that's mismatched, maybe see if you can find some that would match better to replace at local antique stores, etc. As nice as the updated upstairs kitchen and bathrooms look, there's something irreplaceable about the original charm.😊 As for the orange cast from the building next door, maybe look at some shades of blue for the walls to mute the orange. Tricky part will be the different shades of orange tint being cast throughout the day. Good luck and have so much fun on this new adventure! 😊
Wow, you hit the jackpot. There is so much character in your new home. You are going to have so much fun designing and planning your projects. Congrats again!🌷🌷
All your hard work has paid off and patience too because it took a while to find what you loved. We will take bottom room on right so bulldogs have easy access outside!! Proud of you Drew. You deserve this. ❤️mom
So adorable.♥️
Awwww, that is such a cute post. Kudos to both of you for being so lovely ^^

Oh my gosh, this is adorable.

Omg thanks UA-cam!!
Congrats on your awesome home purchase and can’t wait to see each space transformed. The outdoor space in back as well!!
Why aren't there comments about THE UA-cam comments on Drews video!!!???!?! youtube knows whats up!!

Wow! You bought my dream home! :) Can't wait to see what you do with it. Very exciting, congrats!
Absolutely stunning. I love the fact that you didn’t go for the typical ultra modern LA home. Your place feels is beautiful but it still feels like a home and has a great deal of character.
Thank you so so much! I’m so in love with it
@@lonefox Seeing how happy you are makes me (and many others) happy 🙂. Your excitement is contagious! ❤️❤️
Perhaps you could do the same?
that is an amazing idea!
That sounds perfect - then no worries about water damage due to the 'imperfections'!
Thank you for pointing this out. Too often people freak out over broken tiles and default to: THE BATH NEEDS TO BE GUTTED! OH NO! This is absurd, as any damaged tiles can be sourced and replaced. Ditto for period fixtures.
I hope he saw your comment!!!!
I was coming to say the exact same thing!
Hey, I love your art ❤️!
Thank you so much!
this man is living in two units.... he's getting dangerously capitalist and we might have to eat him
I couldn't agree more. This is gonna be a fun journey!
@@LosEspookys too funn-nay!!!
Agreed! I'd keep the pink big bathroom too! Such a shame what they've done with the tiles in the upstairs bathroom and kitchen :S
Honestly this is one of the most beautiful homes I've seen from a youtuber. Is not crazy mansion but it has way more character. Stunning!
It may not look like a mansion but it’s definitely the cost of one haha
For the backyard: plant a tree! That way, you can see how long you already live in the space if you see the tree grow :)
Also think about hiring a garden architect and ripping out some of the concrete. There's so much potential for a green heaven with lots of nature for insects and small animals!
Well gee guys LA and most of California has severe water restrictions because of 7 year drought - so no grass etc- and I'd wait on pool as well.
(go see "greening the desert" by Geoff Lawton for more info)
I am sure if you dig a little into food forest design you can turn that backyard into a heaven without using that much water.
I'm not a designer but to me the pink bathroom has an art deco feel. I think you can modernize it with a spa shower and still keep that art deco vibe.
I love the way you appreciate craftsmanship and unique pieces, even if they’re ultimately not for you. You comment on what you like and don’t like without being overly judgmental. You don’t go around saying “this is so ugly!” I really respect this about you because you find beauty everywhere!
Awesome ! Can’t wait to see the bathrooms after you’ve renovated them ! 😂. Please 🙏🏼
I agree and I cant wait to see all the process
Thanks for commenting. It will be fun to see what he comes up with.
me too, "silently screaming with delight" !!!😍
I have two suggestions. First, for the bounce back "red room", what about painting it a shade of green? According to color theory, green is opposite red, so it would absorb the light instead of reflect ("bounce") the light from your neighbor's house and green is always a fun color to play with.
Second, what about sanding down and refinishing the beams downstairs to match the original beams? You could probably create a stencil or something for the beautiful artwork on the dark beams. That way, the house would match itself again. 😊 Just a thought.
making a stencil would be really easy either cutting it by hand or on a Cricut machine.
wow I didn't know that! Thank you for increasing my knowledge 😀❤I do live green alot though
I was thinking green window sheers but green walls makes more sense. Maybe both would look good
Lucky you, having so many Art Deco lamps.
The pink bathroom is growing on me!! Let’s preserve it!!
@@lilithgrrrl Brett Waterman is amazing!
I agree. The character once gone can't be replaced.
unusual but still pretty
I think he could really modernize it with the marble and still honor the original green and black and original designs. I definitely recommend keeping as many tiles to repurpose them in a different way. Would love to see that project.
@@dmears06 no need to fix something that isn't broke. Modernising isn't always a must and it would be a pity to destroy something so old on a whim. Especially because there's the upstairs one that is identical but not historical to test things out on.
If you do one room per month, you've got enough rooms to last about a year and a half without repeating. You're gonna have SO MUCH FUN with this house!
Omgosh that grape glass lamp was so gorgeous!!!
when i saw the pink bathroom i literally gasped, is beautiful! i hope you can keep it as it is, maybe fix some stuff, but god i loved it! the whole house is just so beautiful and with so much character! i'm looking forward to all the changed you're gonna make
I know…I’m hurting at the idea of a young person ruining a historical bathroom just because they don’t like the tile…
Not everything has to be transformed. The entire point would be to preserve the history and find tile that could work with the existing ones. Really hurts my heart.
The two art deco lights in the pink bathroom next to the mirror are stunning. I would love to own them. :D
I’m going to try my best to preserve that space!!!
@@lonefox As I’m only about 4 min in I am sure there’s sooo much more to come but here’s my 2cents: Drew, I can’t think of anyone ( besides MaCenna!)who would treat this house as respectfully !
Yes great advice, gotta try with the complementary color
^^ I was gonna say that's a possibility too
My vote/opinion: Keep as much of the pink tile in both those floor-level bathrooms as you can!
I would also love to fill all the arch cut outs with statues!! 🤩
Yes I came to the comments to say plant some trees for shade !
I was thinking the same thing! I’d suggest a white paint with a blue undertone to cool down the orange
Yes, that should help! Also, plants around the windows and cool tone sheer curtains to filter the light!
Or just put some slightly blue tinted foil on the window glass for now. It should block out the orange, too and is much cheaper for a quick solution.
I'm wondering if there is a special film he can put on the windows that will cancel the reflection. If he wants to keep the paint the way it is?
Yeah, definitely not those yellow walls!
The way you lit up was beautiful! You're gonna have a ball fixing your new home up just the way you want it & we get to experience it right along with you! CONGRATULATIONS DREW!
Wow. That is a showcase home. You'll have a magazine spread after this. I can't believe you found something available with SO much character!!
Sooo proud! Thanks for watching Drew!! Have a fun Sunday
Drew's family is in several of his videos. They're always proud

Congratulations again Drew 🎉
I like that idea of stenciling the downstairs beams too. That stenciling is such a cool feature of the house!
@@lonefox P.S. Have you ever been to Pasadena Architectural Salvage?
Drew is the most lovable host on UA-cam. By far! And so talented!
What a fantastic idea to go with terra cotta (or look of) pavers in the backyard. Pea gravel helps in some areas too, for a true European feel.
If there's room to plant Italian cypress trees in between your house and the red house to block the orange reflection I think that would look really nice and add privacy as well as some nature.
Was thinking that too
Even though there might be a lot of renovations to make, there is so so much architectural charm in this home. I am so excited for you! I cannot wait to see what this becomes and to watch the journey :')
Yes I love older houses they have so much character and are so unique and special
Congrats! You have years of redecorating ahead of you. Fun!
I absolutely love the tile in the first kitchen, especially the green. I love the look of 1920s kitchens and bathrooms! It's said that the bathroom tile is broken because I love it too!
The whole house is so beautiful!
In the yard, I'd add a pool and an outdoor kitchen!
SO excited to watch you decorate this gorgeous, character filled home !! No one deserves it more than you ! XO from Canada.
The first floor is officially the “Lone Fox Lounge!”
Can’t wait to see how you show off your creativity in this beautiful space!
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
The concrete needs to go ASAP!!
This guy deserves the world. I’m so happy for you!!! This house is gorgeous, cannot wait to see the content that it will come due this 🥰
U r so sweet ❤️
I never knew I wanted a 1920’s Spanish home in LA ☺️💁🏽♀️ Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
Or blue. Or any color with blue undertones.
Or you can use green tinted window film. Which is not a permanent change if the orange house gets a new paint job! 😉
I was thinking the same thing! Some green should help to counteract/neutralize the red since opposite on the color wheel.
I agree! I’m going to conserve as much as possible while still making it a bit more updated!
@@lonefox I figured you would.. I think you’ll be very happy you did as you enjoy changing things up you know you’ll always have a beautiful timeless back drop to start from. Can’t wait for the journey 😊
Takes my breath away how fabulous this house is. I can’t wait to see what you do with it
what a stunning place!
My goodness that idea of sourcing artisans who use the same methods would be AMAZING!! And totally agree, that pink tile is 😍
These were my exact thoughts as well - buying historic properties comes with a huge responsibility for the original features.
So beautiful!! 🥺😍 You deserve it and I'm excited to follow your makeovers for the new house. Can't wait for that video with your landlord! 😂
Man aren't I excited to see this whooooole process, New chapter! ❤️❤️
Just came across this web site. Am so glad that this house and you found each other! The house has so much history to it, and with your talent, abilities and appreciation for architectural history, you will build on its taking it to the next level. Congratulations on your new home! Fortunate house! Wonderful owner! The neighbors will be so happy it was you who acquired and chose to live next to them! Hope that you are featured in one of the architural magazines featuring this home, and your dedication to your profession. Congratulations!
You’re right about the lighting appraisal. Good suggestion!
Drew - so happy for you! So happy for us (the content coming our way is going to be insane)! Win-win, friend! That aside, you worked so flippin’ hard for this and should be incredibly proud of yourself! The LF community certainly is. 💛 Sending good vibes and positivity your way for this next step in your journey! Your home is already BEAUTIFUL and you will only make it even more so! CANNOT WAIT!!!
So beautiful Drew!!! Can't wait to see how you make this house your home
This is INSANE. You worked so hard for this and we're SO PROUD OF YOU!!! I can't wait to see what you do here :)
Omg, I am literally so jealous: this house is so beautiful and it has so, so much character. I'm so excited to see what you make of it! Congatulations on becoming a home owner! Can't wait to watch all those renovation videos!!
Tha house is insanely gorgeous Drew and I can definitely see you living in there. I've been watching your videos for many years and I'm genuinely so happy for you! Can't wait for all your home videos❤️❤️
In my dreamworld I’d install a koi pond w rocks & mini waterfall…*sigh
The light fixtures are all INCREDIBLE! My fave is the downstairs primary bedroom, that bubbly glass @ 7:00
Just WOW!!
P.S. I love when the younger generations appreciate the things that others your age would find “ugly”…
ex: light fixures, tiles, wood ceiling, archways…basically ALL the character. ❤️
*Oh & the bright red house reflecting your walls…I’m stilllll thinkin.
Congrats!!!
Aww thank you so much for this sweet comment! That light fixture is one of my favorites as well at 7:00! The brass is SO heavy!
Sharing in your joy. What a spectacular house! Just WOW! Congratulations!
To counteract the orange-ish lighting I’d recommend painting the walls a cool (maybe even SLIGHTLY blue) white. It’ll balance each other out
I love how these units look like vintage wealth.
Brenda Sparks, that is his house he bought it, he is the homeowner.
@@esmeraldagreen1992 I’m pretty sure he said in his video where he shared he bought a house that Marie will be living with him.
The green tile, black tile, and light fixture in the butler’s pantry take my breath away! I LOVE the light.
Your new home has so much light, history and charm!! Congrats on this huge achievement - I'd have so many "pinch myself" moments! Excited to continue following your journey
I am still totally in awe with your new home. It literally is so amazing and has so much potential
Drew, I am so happy to see you back and in such great spirits. You have a whole new adventure ahead and I can’t wait to watch it unfold! 🎉💕💕🎉
As nice as the updated upstairs kitchen and bathrooms look, there's something irreplaceable about the original charm.😊
As for the orange cast from the building next door, maybe look at some shades of blue for the walls to mute the orange. Tricky part will be the different shades of orange tint being cast throughout the day. Good luck and have so much fun on this new adventure! 😊
Wow, you hit the jackpot. There is so much character in your new home. You are going to have so much fun designing and planning your projects. Congrats again!🌷🌷
