How to temporary fix Power Steering problems on Fiat Punto MK2

In this video I will show you how to temporary fix a Power Steering failure on a Fiat Punto MK2 (W Reg).
There are many reasons why the EPS (Electric Power Steering) will stop working:
1. Battery too weak
2. Torque Sensor Failure
3. Speedo Sensor Failure (Non ABS models)
4. Condensation Fowling
5. Motor Failure
6. Basic Electric Faults (Fuse/Relay)
7. Dry Solder - Motor Failure
Although most of the time, the battery is to blame the occasional light on and power steering stops / works half the time.
Motor Failure is more common in Pre 2003 models, where the motor uses a relay set. Yes changing the motor can be a possible cure.
If the battery is old and weak - that can also be easy to eliminate without diagnostic, but motor/speedo/torque sensor etc all have to be fault coded to find out what is actually wrong.
As said in the video you use this fix at your VERY OWN RISK and again I take no responsibilities for any damage this may cause to your vehicle!!!

To fix the power steering permanently, fit 2 new relays to the power steering motor control board behind the steering wheel. Did mine, still good after 2 years.
That music is piss annoying when I'm trying to listen to what you're doing, so I know exactly what to do.

Hi winn891 . Thanks very much for this great tip , worked for me and got me through my MOT today.
The Fiat Punto has always had Power Steering issues but not all the same reason for failure. The Fiat forum advised check for poor battery performance. On startup the electrical Power Steering demands are enormous hence 60 amp fuse. My ECU got stuck in a cycle of not allowing the PS to engage ,even disconnecting the Battery didn't clear it.
I removed the fuse , started the engine , left it to run for a few minutes and put the fuse back in whilst engine still on . It has resolved the issue, I have turned the car over several times without issue even though the battery is still tired. New one still out with the Couriers :)
I guess this isn't a fix for all mk2 power steering problems but absolutely worth a try , it's saved me a fortune in money and time.

Thank's bro!I just wash my punto MK2 '02 1.2 8v and the Power steering stop working.Indicator light is on and I use your method to get home.It really work's.But after turn off the engine, same problem is steel here....After repeating this method with fuse a few times ,the problem is solved.I can say that this is a problem with condensation.Thank's again bro.Greetings from Serbia!

I also thought it had something to do with moisture as my Panda only has steering issues in winter. Where was the moisture and how dis you fix it?

This worked on my girlfriends Punto MK2.
Thanks , this worked for me , however not sure how long it will last , motor from scrapyard (as mentioned) approx £20 is best solution will take 1 hr tops to replace , a new one is about £150 and on a 16 yr old car that's a waste of money , also if you remove one from a scrap car you will be able to see how it's comes out so therefore easier to replace

Hi I have a fiat punto 1.2 multijet 05 plate, once after struggling to start and having to bump start after 1 mile or so power steering light came on and steering heavy, I. Stopped turned car off and on again and it was fine, power steering light kept coming on intermittently but steering was fine, after finishing work yesterday struggled but started, and power steering light came on and steering heavy, turned off and on and it was fine again. Any ideas?

I tried this with my Y reg 1.2 and it did not work. I don't have any warning lights on my dash showing a steering wheel /city mode. I never use the city mode either but when I pushed the button previously the red city mode light would show on the dash but not showing now.
Couldn't hear a word he was saying so can someone explain?
Do I have to take out fuse when the car is not running and ignition off? then do I replace with engine running?

I don’t understand how taking the fuse out makes your power steering work again, I mean, surely removing the fuse does the opposite!???

I have a Punto mk2a 8v, and my EPS is sometimes faulty... sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt... if i start the car and lights on the EPS figure, the EPS doesnt work... if i turn off the car and turn on again, i can´t choose the city mode... just freezes... i have to turn off and on again, for the city button to work, and i may not have EPS again...
I feel that the car sometimes starts right away and somestimes it takes 2-3 sec. to start... battery has 30K km... alternator?
Bro i have a kia it's EPS when I turn little bit for the right side only at a certain angle the steering make unusual sound like something is grinding inside and when i complete turning it the sound disappears,

You get more problems with the motor in cold weather, I found putting a beer cooler on the motor helps insulate the motor from the cold, the motor is size of a coke can and near the steering wheel inside the car
By removing the fuse - the EPS light would come on indicating a fault
An no point during the video does this come on.....
Sure thats the correct fuse according to the manual, but there is a 2nd fuse located internally in the footwell fusebox
Most faults are weak battery related, the PS draws current - battery+alternator cant deliver and click - the light comes on
Non ABS models - the speedo sensor needs a loom modification
ABS models, if ABS fails, often the PS does as well

Yes, it is. And the part is expensive. I got quoted £750 from Halfords (including part and labour). It is not an easy job.

I will try this method tomorrow in the daytime, if it works I can probably pass my MOT, it is expiring on the 20th December. They failed it because of the red warning light for the steering wheel. Good Luck to you!

Waste of time.....just can hear rubbish music and no speaking.
All you need to do is change the power steering motor if the power steering is not working. Its really easy
