It is astonishing that he could still perform like this despite a lifetime of hard work and struggle. He had throat cancer when this was recorded and passed away about 8 months later. One of the all time greats.
The older I get and the more I study music the more this man's work means to me; it always touched my heart, but the technical expertise, the use of slurs and bent notes the man used his voice like a horn. I miss him so much.
I saw him live in Sydney in the 1970s. He was more than even the high expectations. He was 'Mr Entertainment'. The standing ovation at the end was thunderous and everyone had a feeling they had experienced a special occasion and some-one special.
I’m literally crying knowing that when he put out such beautiful songs with his throat cancer. He was a true giant of a performer forever. Gotta love him always for his love of song and dedication.
To think he was just a few months away from death ,what a performance what a singer the greatest entertainer this world has ever seen .Thankyou candyman
His gift to us is a gift that we can never repay. How can words begin to describe his contribution to society. This man truly loved to share his gift and we are better for it. I honestly wish he could have been on this earth much longer just so we could have more blessed memories of him.
Having had the pleasure of listening to Sammy all my life, I count him the most exceptional vocalist…ever. His range was phenomenal, and his ability to mimic other vocalists set him apart from all. Simply the best!
It may not sound as angelic as karimloo's version, but the shear emotion and soulfulness of the performance is unmatched. Rest in peace Sammy Davis Jr . You are greatly missed
He smoked four packs of cigarettes a day most of his life. He began to develop symptoms in August, 1989 and was diagnosed with throat cancer in September, 1989 - the same month as this MDA Telethon.
I write this through a wall of tears. Such a beautiful song and such a truly beautiful version. No one could compare to the greatest Mr Sammy Davis JR. R.I.P Sammy ❤️🇺🇸🏴🇬🇧🙏🏻
Absolutely fantastic. Rest in peace Sammy Davis Junior. Your voice was golden and so was your heart. Thank you for this beautiful song♥️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😢😭😢😢😢😢😭😭🎵🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵
What a wonderful talent He was incredible he could act sing dance he Even did impersonations he was a gift from God Multi talented man God rest your soul Mr. Davis you are surely missed🙏🏻
I remember for many decade the Jerry Lewis MD telethon was something we waited a year to watch for 3 days. 2r hrs a day. What talent was on that stage. The MD children made my eyes leak so badly. It tore at your heart. My children went door to door collecting money and on Sunday we would drive them up to the Des Moines Studio and they would turn it in to the local telethon. Jerry was so full of energy. Trying to stay up the whole time. ED McMahon would EC for few hours so Jerr u could rest a bit and change clothes, freshen up to close the show and sing " You'll never Walk Alone".... the truck drivers ( teamsters union)...7 up....and firefighters/ law enforcement units came from all over to give millions. And Budweiser. Was among so many huge groups to give in person....teachers unions...etc. it was best thing happening on Labor Day Weekend. We watched it in 62 when we first married....and every year until Jerry's health got too bad decades later. He always had his sweet wife Patti there for support. Then he divorced and had the much younger wife Susie there. Miss the telethon , the great entertainment on stage and the comedy. I remember when Frank brought Dean out to revonsile with Jerry. That was moving. Jerry looked at him and said..." So , you working???" Ha. 💞🎤
The inspiration for wanting to be a singer, to be able to Master you craft with such conviction and emotion .That was Sammy Davis Jr. my forever inspiration.
I can’t believe I’m seeing this! Again! I saw it once, live and I remember being so surprised but thinking it made sense. Thank you so much for sharing this video. 🥰🥰🥰
Absolutely beautiful. He was determined to sing and he did, it was evident at the end he was exhausted but he made it despite his fatal cancer killing him with each moment. Sammy Davis Junior was one in a million there will never be another voice or another man like him. Absolute excellence . Rest in Peace🎶🎵❤
Sammy Davis très émouvant comme toujours j aime beaucoup cette chanson la version française est chantée par Rose Laurens qui n est plus aujourd hui où que tu sois Sammy merci😘
Why the skip in the recording in the middle of the song??? MyGod, what a slap in the face to Sammy. I love him. No one will ever surpass his excellence in everything he did. Sammy❤♪♬
Throat cancer? Think that would stop Sammy from performing, as he did year after year. on the MD Telethon. While he told his old friend Jerry Lewis he would see him next year, they both knew that would not be. Sammy died a few months after this amazing performance.
The adaptation of the original lyric makes him sound very dodgy. "I took her childhood in my stride, but I was gone when autumn came". I cannot help thinking that someone should have thought harder about how to turn this into a male singer's song.
Oh my sweet Lord, what a voice You gave this man. I miss him so much. R.I.P. Sammy Davis, Jr.
Thank you all for the appreciation for this lost genius 🙏🏽✊🏾👍🏾❤️👋🏽👴🏽♥️

God rest his soul. I didn't know
Smoker
This was his goodbye to his fans. Simply brilliant.
Frank and Sammy were like brothers. RIP to two great entertainers and men.

And I still adore him. Will love him till I die. As long as we remember and keep listening to him he will always be with us.❤❤❤❤❤❤
he lost his diversity, but never his ability. Sammy always gave God the credit for his gift . Smart to bless the Lord so he can bless you

Beautiful soul…
If ever there has been a more talented performer I must have missed him. Surely Sammy was the best all round entertainer of all time

It sounds like somebody who’s actually been through the things he’s singing about.
He smoked four packs of cigarettes a day most of his life. He began to develop symptoms in August, 1989 and was diagnosed with throat cancer in September, 1989 - the same month as this MDA Telethon.
His talent was limitless and we will always remember him. Plus singing to us in his last months is heroic!
I’ve heard many versions, this is my favorite. I feel it from his heart to my heart
I cry for lost love 😢
Your music and performances will live on forever, Sammy! You are dearly missed! Rest In eternal Peace!
“See you next year Jerry” 😕 Unfortunately he died shortly after this appearance. Amazing talent.

Sings this truly from the heart. It’s no wonder, other celebrities like Paul Anika, Dean Martin said he was simply a gentleman and lovely singer.

Throat cancer? Think that would stop Sammy from performing, as he did year after year. on the MD Telethon. While he told his old friend Jerry Lewis he would see him next year, they both knew that would not be. Sammy died a few months after this amazing performance.
Cigarettes killed him
Sheer genius
Que pena que o cigarro o levou tão cedo. Lamentável.
👏👏👏👏

He looks horrible, cancer would claim him soon after, he refused to stop smoking despite doctors warning him 15 years earlier
