If you lightly press the # key on the key pad, you can go between high and low power. Some uv5r's also have a medium power setting using that method. But if you press and hold that # key, it locks and unlocks the keypad.
Total newbie here. Just got a Baofeng UV-5r MK4 8w for Christmas. Awesome video. I had no idea of how much there is to learn But your video has saved me hours and a lot of frustration. Thanks!
Thanks so much for doing this video. I ordered one of these radios with plans to use it for FRS. After ordering, I discovered I need an HAM license to use this radio. So, I am going to study for a HAM license.
You can still use that radio on FRS frequencies just like an FRS radio I do all the time still waiting for testing date. Just do not transmit on any other frequency without license
Great information! I have wanted to get into HAM for a long time. I saw these radios for cheap and there are people who suggest them for a low cost way to get into HAM. I also do some prepping and knew these would be useful. My wife is also on the road quite a bit making grandkid runs. I used to have a beautiful FM business band radio system with a 85 foot break-over antenna pole, with the antenna it hit 97 feet so I didn't have to put lights on it. It was a duplex system with my own repeater, and I had a phone patch because this was in the time before cell phones. I drove a school bus at the time and the phone was very handy. I could get out 90 miles from the antenna and communicate home. Yes, Kansas is pretty flat. When I was forced to leave farming because I became disabled I sold my 30 grand setup for a pittance. I almost no saled it, but I had no real need for it since cell phones were finally small enough and cheap enough and had enough coverage that they were finally worthwhile. And that was the concession my wife made so I would sell my radio system. Anyway, HAM should be fun. One question, though, will my wife also have to be licensed or will mine suffice? Anyway, I'm glad I happened on to your videos. Thanks.
The on/off knob is also a tool to tighten the antenna nut. It pulls off and fits over the antenna lug and fits in the slots so you can hand tighten. Not all uv5’s have dual receivers.
DTMFST is a setup for the old autopatch. You need the DTMF tones from the keypad to broadcast to the autopatch so that the telephone service recognizes what numbers you are pressing.
Thank you. Please dont stop. Doing these video's I'm getting back into ham radios again. Was licenced . back in the 80s i was licenced . driving a service truck for a hvac co.Got the job because I was licenced. Now we have cell phones. I kind of miss having a radio. So thank you again.
Like the rest of the viewers. I subscribed because I find this crash course very easy to follow and easy to learn. Kudos! You did a great job! I will view more of your videos. I am new to HAM radio and I plan to get my license soon.
DTMF = DTMF = DUAL TONE MULTI FREQUENCY! The tones used for telephones dial. Can be used to control repeaters or other things. At one time there were phone patches on repeaters but with cellphone I don't think there are any still used.
Great video! Even though these radios ship with an English manual now, I still found this video VERY useful as the information in the manual is very limited.
Like everyone else has commented...one of the best explanations of the menus. Especially for us newbies. I followed along with my BF-F8HP and adusted several of the settings. Many thanks in 2022. The technical aspects of the video are outstanding, great green screen and very helpful showing the inserted video of manipulating the buttons while talking. Thumbs up and new sub.
Fantastic tutorial, as usual. Thank you sir. As a side note, the DTMF tones are used to lower/raise railroad crossing gates on most major RR’s. I’m sure it is used for other purposes as well.
I used to be involved in CB radios about 20 years ago then gave it all up. However, I recently seen your channel and it got me interested again but this time in Ham. I just purchased a UV-5R and also currently studying for the exam here in Newfoundland, Canada. Thanks
Not Sure if you have caught this by now but all these important menu items are written on the keypad in blue, Also #34 TDR-AB , Its when you have #7 enabled. you can Transmit on either a or b or off whatever active chann is active.
Hi there! I'm posting this from Brazil justo to thank you HOSHNASI for your contribution and effort. I totally agree that it's mandatory to know the radio, to learn some basics about using it, etc. etc. I'm investing time to get my license and to learn those things. Down here it's also a federal crime to Broadcast without a license. If I had view this first part video It could be far more easy to start that it was for me. Great contribution !!! Thank you again!!!! Keep doing this great Job!
your video made me study a little about my weierwei vev-v17 radio and saved 5 channels around my most visited places. just to to mention that weierwei radio is not a good radio for a newbie like me to start with. thanks.
Bought this radio with some friends for airsoft and knew next to nothing about the world of amateur radio. very comprehensive and easy to watch. greatly appreciated
hoshnasi I ordered a cord off EBay and I could not get it to work. And yes I tried chirp and still can't get them to work. I rather just ship and pay someone that know how to do it
@@chrissewell1608 No shit! He said "radios aren't like guns where you can just pick one up and defend yourself" lmao. What is KA-PLUNK! the sound my friends bullets make hitting the ground when we are shooting at hogs.
I'm a big gun guy and I have to agree with his comment. Yes becoming proficient in weapons takes time but I can get people to the basics in a day. The basics in ham will not be acquired in a day. So many variables by comparison. I guess that's why we are to learn. So teach on professor!
TDR-AB In dual watch mode, the frequency A or B that a transmission was last heard on is automatically selected as the one you will transmit to. If you want it to always choose A or B instead so you don't accidentally transmit to one of the frequencies you are monitoring, you set that here. Choose A and its always transmits on A in dual watch. Same for B obviously.
Great video. Please be very careful with the last setting for Resetting the radio to default. I set everything up as instructed and then accidentally reset everything and must start over. So I went through the video instructions a second time and accidentally reset All settings again. Then I quickly flipped through the settings to turn English back on and check the rest of the settings. This was good practice to familiarize myself with the radio, as I am a new user. I just exited the menu when I got to the reset setting on the third time through. This was an excellent instructional video, that I greatly appreciate! 🙏
You skipped menu 14. Just got my UV5r. I watched your video before it came in and didn't notice. Now that it came in and I'm programing, I notice. I think it's for talking to repeaters. But not sure. Might be something to set in CHIRP. Haven't gotten that far. Great videos!
DTMF is dual ton multi frequency. It is used to dial telephone numbers through a radio with a telephone interface connected to it. DTMF was very popular before the advent of cell phones. Many ham and commercial repeaters had telephone interfaces hooked to them so their users could make phone calls from their mobile and hand held radios.
I remember that back in the early 90's. You'd have to tell the person you were calling them on HAM so they wouldn't say anything that others would hear. If we were on searches in remote areas or for a long time on fire scenes, etc. and someone had a HAM, it was helpful to be able to let someone know that you were going to be late before cell phones were readily available.
with 2 of your videos and I've learned so much. i ordered the book and I'll be studying for my technician licence. Thanks. man. you truly got me going.
You are awesome at this! Thanks for the Baofeng "primer". I know I will be watching this again when I receive my BF-F9 V2+. Now if I could find a video on basic ham frequencies and tones and how all of that works together. I will be using my radio for listening for a while. The soonest I could be tested for a tech license here isn't until January so I have plenty of time to study and learn. We only have one repeater in my area that I know of and it is 15 miles away. I hope that with a better antenna that I will be able to use it. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Just finished the video, lots of great information, I do need to rewatch the video so I can verify that my settings are the same as what you recommend... again great video. And thank you for your help in understanding my radio.
Studying for my Technicians licensee but due to work schedule and free time I still can't schedule a time and place to test :( Decided to purchase UV5R and learn how to use this thing and all its menus before I get my license so I'm "ahead of the the curve" . Great step by step tutorial of all the menu items! I'm a firm believe of knowing how to use your "tools" before you need them. Thanks for posting!
LOL, Well, I am one of those guys who bought the Baofeng acouple years ago....now the corona virus has got us all "social distancing" im trying to get caught up! thanks for the video, learning a lot.
I have had two UV5R radios for a couple of years. They were programmed by my friend at the radio club. I was messing with one of them and screwed up the frequency list so this is the first time I have had to fix it myself. Thanks for doing this video so I COULD do it myself. Also the Miklor manual is much better than the factory one. I will be trying Chirp soon but your video got me started. Thank you. Dave K8WPE since 1960.
DTMF= Duel Tone Multi Frequence = Used for tuch tone dialing. Not used by most people. Would only be used if the repeater had something that can be changed with this.
I bought a couple of Tenway brand Baofeng clones off Amazon. I got 2 radios, 2) 1800 mah batteries, 2 charging bases, 4 antennas, (2 short, 2 long), 2 earphone mics, 2 speaker mics and the programming cable for $85.00 and I am happy as can be. Something that I didn't see on this video is with chirpp, you can program the frequency limits from 1 to 1 GHz although the board won't go this wide. You can, however, go a little outside the out of the box bands and it still will transmit and receive. Go too far outside and when you key up, it won't unkey. Mine works on VHF from 125.000 MHz to 177.9975 MHz. On UHF, it works from 375.000 MHz to 549.9975 MHz. Ctcss is tone squelch, dtmf is telephone keypad frequencies for dialing a repeater phone patch, dcs is digital squelch. Midland makes an FRS radio win 50 "channels". It is actually the 22 open FRS channels and 28 repeated random FRS channels but with random ctcss or dcs squelch randomly activated. I'm sure that all of these radios are programmed the same but there is no rhyme or reason as to which code or channel is where but I came across the channel / squelch code list on line so I programmed them in with my FRS channels for utility sake. These are really versatile radios. These also have 3 power settings of 1, 5 and 8 watts.
I bought one of these to start my ham experance. The instructions are pants and came across this video. What a video and thanks for making it. It's made my day. Looking forward to Pt2.
I just received my general license and my first radio. I am not technically savvy but I love it anyway. Your video makes me feel like I can figure this out, so I commit to watching it until I do. Thank you so much.
I just subscribed to this channel, I was looking at a Baofeng a while back because of your videos I'm going to pull the trigger..Keep up the great work....Bravo Zulu
Dude Brovo, I had this radio sitting on a shelf didn't have a clue how to use it , your video was clear and easy to follow thank you very much , I know how to use it now and I'm getting my ham licence.
Good job. You've helped me understand that I pretty much know nothing... Also, what's the name of the website you mentioned about the Chinese to English translation of the manual? Thanks !
U can get a 24DP battery (deepcycle hybrid) from walmart for $70, use top rails from chain link fences to create interlocking mast for antenna, 20-30 ft is ez, strap to facial board of your house with metal strap (ace hdwre cheap), Solar panels cheap 100 watt should work can be less than $1 a watt ie 50 w maybe $50 or less. Beware of sunyee solar panels they seem to exaggerate the wattage, might say 5,000 w but is really 50 w ? Very lightweight flexible panels are nice for eaxy arrangement and can even be used on sides of houses or campers, or on top as well. All the above for perhaps $140 ?
I have never given much thought towards HAM radios until the other day when your video showed up on my UA-cam feed I watched the video and now I’m very interested in this. With where our country is heading only an unwise person would write HAM radios off as nonsense. Thank you for your videos I am now looking into getting my HAM radio license and my fiancé is even going to get into HAM radios as well. Once again thank you
Ok. This video got me off my duff. Will be ordering by the weekend and taking technician test soon. Best advice for me was to print out the translated manual.
An idle musing here while watching this video. It's my understanding (and ask anyone to correct me if I have erred in my thinking process here) that these hand held 2 meter radios exclusively rely upon repeaters for extended range. With a few exceptions, they also rely on line of sight to transmit regardless if it's to a repeater or another radio. In a SHTF scenario, I've been pondering what use they would be in comparison to a CB radio. If the grid were to go down, I assume repeaters would go down as well (those without a temporary backup system). I believe an EMP would take out a repeater not to mention any number of natural disasters too. Wouldn't a different bandwidth (e.g. the 10 or 30 meter) make more sense for such emergencies since these events would all be in the local vicinity to begin with and outside help would be required?
The answer really is that it depends on alot of factors. All VHF/UHF radios have the same line of sight limitations, that is true. However, for local coordination, that might be enough. Otherwise a good 50w mobile radio in the shack would be helpful. I would definately include an HF radio (all band, 160m-6m) in your emergency preperations and adequate off-grid power solutions as well. CB would have a value in an emergency. However, due to the current sun cycle 11 meters (and 10m) is tought to make long distance contacts with. And when those bands are open is during the day cycle. Great question, cheers.
Thank you! I've had this radio on the shelf for months because understanding it wasn't intuitive for me. This is a great resource and will have to look at the other vids, maybe even try for the Technician license.
UV-5R is part 90 certified... I have yet to come across any Baofeng that does the actual wattage advertised on the box... 1 watt = 600mW 4 watts = 2.5 - 3 watts 8 watts - 3.5 - 5 watts And those are the BEST I have seen with full batteries. ANI is used in commercial applications to ID radios on a system, However DTMF is grossly outdated and not used much more in the US for ANI, most analog systems that use ANI and are not converted to digital use MDC1200..
ElfNet Gaming so you watched a few youtube vids and now you think you know ham radio? Or just radio in general. You dont tho, dtmf is widely used still across the board, mdc is just a variant for motorola, see that? You could only even name 1 brands databurst! Anyway. You dont know how to use a meter either. Ive actually seen pretty spot on results on the meter with these. You are not an fcc lawyer, you probably know nothing about the organization as a whole sp just stfu about what its certified for if you knew ham you would know “part acceptance” has been largely ignored even by the fcc until public safety services and cell towers get effected. So again, nice try on watching a few vids and making comments that u think make u seem educated. You fail.
So happy I found this tonight!💕 I have a set of new baofengs that I need to program. I had trouble downloading chirp. This should get me started. I’m in Southeast Georgia 💕
Nice tutorial. I will be getting a couple of UV-5R's for SHTF situations and also getting licenced as I am in the UK and already have the Foundation course manual to start looking through. I have subbed.
DTMF Means Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (the original touch tone system used in telephones). There a two audio tones sent at the same time (think of them as horizontal and vertical on the phone dialer buttons). The vertical tone can have three frequencies and the horizontal can have 4 frequencies. Thus they multiplex into all 12 of the numbers on a touch tone phone. I assume that some systems are still using these in the radio system for accessing phone patch equipment.
Thank you so much for the detail in this video. I'm about to take delivery of my Tri-Power model, and am cramming for my Tech license. I'm hoping I can find a test site with the whole COVID-19 mess. Thanks.
Yes, she will need her license to talk to you.
The on/off knob is also a tool to tighten the antenna nut. It pulls off and fits over the antenna lug and fits in the slots so you can hand tighten. Not all uv5’s have dual receivers.
I had to pull mine off to check. That's awesome!
DTMFST is a setup for the old autopatch. You need the DTMF tones from the keypad to broadcast to the autopatch so that the telephone service recognizes what numbers you are pressing.
Best UV-5R and general Ham radio introduction video ever. Thanks!
Thank you. Please dont stop. Doing these video's I'm getting back into ham radios again. Was licenced . back in the 80s i was licenced . driving a service truck for a hvac co.Got the job because I was licenced. Now we have cell phones. I kind of miss having a radio. So thank you again.
Thanks for commenting and watching!
I’m sure it is used for other purposes as well.
got my license today and a handme down BAOFENG and found your channel. just want to say thanks for the info !
I can't even explain how happy I am I found your video. INSANELY HELPFUL!!!
Thanks!
I used to be involved in CB radios about 20 years ago then gave it all up. However, I recently seen your channel and it got me interested again but this time in Ham. I just purchased a UV-5R and also currently studying for the exam here in Newfoundland, Canada. Thanks
Nice! Thanks for watching!
Not Sure if you have caught this by now but all these important menu items are written on the keypad in blue, Also #34 TDR-AB , Its when you have #7 enabled. you can Transmit on either a or b or off whatever active chann is active.
Complete newbie here ... where can I get a better understanding of the Baofeng Uv-82c “VFO lock out by default” and how to change/program it
Keep doing this great Job!
thankyou brother. i just recieved my UV-R5, and i dont mind saying i was lost. this video on the funtions and keys was truly helpful.
Excellent - The most clear, detailed, and fast moving video I’ve found on the UV-5R. Thanks for not adding an annoying music soundtrack.
+kirkp_nextguitar thank you! Check out the other videos and let me know what you think.
your video made me study a little about my weierwei vev-v17 radio and saved 5 channels around my most visited places. just to to mention that weierwei radio is not a good radio for a newbie like me to start with. thanks.
Bought this radio with some friends for airsoft and knew next to nothing about the world of amateur radio. very comprehensive and easy to watch. greatly appreciated
Todd W The UV5R is cheaper than most decent walkie talkies and much more powerful. it's the most popular comms in airport in Ireland.
Just be careful out there, its illegal to transmit with these without a license. Please use an obscure frequency to reduce interference.
I can't get my 888s and 888s+ to work together. Willing to pay someone to get the 4 to work together
Have you tried programming them with the right cable and CHIRP?
hoshnasi I ordered a cord off EBay and I could not get it to work. And yes I tried chirp and still can't get them to work. I rather just ship and pay someone that know how to do it
I'm a beginner trying to follow -Trying to get use to all the functions Thanks
Great video. Get firearms training. Like radio training it will help if you know what your doing when SHTF.
Oh and it has, ponchos on Deck ⚔️🌩️🏹Stay Alert Stay Alive
Amen brother!
@@chrissewell1608 Haha I honestly think theres more to HAM after looking into it... its VAST
Same for B obviously.
hey I went into frequency mode and received the portage county sheriff dept.
Note to self 19:40 for top and bottom receive. Must do
You skipped menu 14. Just got my UV5r. I watched your video before it came in and didn't notice. Now that it came in and I'm programing, I notice. I think it's for talking to repeaters. But not sure. Might be something to set in CHIRP. Haven't gotten that far. Great videos!
This was very helpful for getting started with my UV-82. The buttons are a little different but the menu is mostly the same.
Thanks for the comment!
Starting to learn this stuff now, thank you so much! Just picked one up today. Now to learn some Baofeng shui.
with 2 of your videos and I've learned so much. i ordered the book and I'll be studying for my technician licence. Thanks. man. you truly got me going.
I’m 6 mins into this video, and I already know I am going to learn a lot about my U5VR. Thank you in advance..
Just finished the video, lots of great information, I do need to rewatch the video so I can verify that my settings are the same as what you recommend... again great video. And thank you for your help in understanding my radio.
Thank the lord I found this video. I was about to close a door on my head.
Glad I could help
Studying for my Technicians licensee but due to work schedule and free time I still can't schedule a time and place to test :( Decided to purchase UV5R and learn how to use this thing and all its menus before I get my license so I'm "ahead of the the curve" . Great step by step tutorial of all the menu items! I'm a firm believe of knowing how to use your "tools" before you need them. Thanks for posting!
thank you very much. I would be totally lost without you, and your teaching methods.
Just got my F8HP. Did CB as a kid...years ago. Thanks for your hard work. This is going to be a fun journey.
Can’t wait. I found you through FieldCraft Survival and was interested in this subject. Radio should be here tomorrow. So just getting prepared. 👍🏼
I bought one of these to start my ham experance. The instructions are pants and came across this video. What a video and thanks for making it. It's made my day. Looking forward to Pt2.
Oh man, hit up my channel. I have a ton of new videos up on ham radio.
I will thanks. Getting my licence soon so will be looking for a base setup. Not sure what to get.
Who doesn't love pants?
Default on two meters is 600 kHz or .6. On 70 centimeters it is 5 or 5 mHz.
I don't hate u but some of the info provided is simply incorrect.
Thank you for teaching us how to use the radio.
My family and I are using your videos as learning tools...
Thank you!!!
BLESSINGS
btw standard offset for 2mtr is 0.600 =+/-(below 147.00 - ...above 147 +,,generally) for 70cm is 5 +/- mhz otherwise very useful :)
Thanks !
Quick add-on when you hit the #/lock key while in channel/freq mode you change the transmit power.
Dude. You totally saved me with your vid. So many out there and not many know what theyre talkn about. Miklor. Great link. Thnk you. Oath Keeper.
This was gold. Thanks Josh.
Young Hams In Traning such as myself who happend across the Baofeng thank you for your time and effort.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

2/3/2020 and this video is still extremely helpful. Thanks!
I am 5 years late with this message but it has helped me tremendously. Thank you.
1 watt = 600mW
4 watts = 2.5 - 3 watts
8 watts - 3.5 - 5 watts
And those are the BEST I have seen with full batteries.
SHTF in the UK? Come on..
Good luck 73s
Great overview - Long time HF operator but just bought a UV5R Plus this weekend to try out!
excellent video, Hashnasi...very informative!
+Bob Stout thanks!
I assume that some systems are still using these in the radio system for accessing phone patch equipment.
outstanding video brother, learned alot
Thank you so much for the detail in this video. I'm about to take delivery of my Tri-Power model, and am cramming for my Tech license. I'm hoping I can find a test site with the whole COVID-19 mess.
I started learning from scratch about 3 days ago, and can pass the practice exams. Your information is gold! Thank you. 😁
This has been a great video, thank you for the run down on this radio
This video is 4 years old but if you happen to see this comment.... at the end of the video you talk about turning on the support video and it’s almost like your apologizing.... my thoughts on that is monetize any way you can. You put your time a knowledge in these so get paid! Especially if it voluntary! Thanks for the info!
Thanks Jason. I did indeed monetize my channel. Thanks for watching the videos and commenting!
I may need to watch this 200 times...lol
Or 2000 for me
Yes agreed, too much info at once for my ADHS Boomer brain...
I had to hit the pause a couple times and back up to re-watch lol
I just ordered the bf8hp and am waiting for it to arrive. This video is super useful and entertaining
Thank you! this helps clarify the manual.
Thank you!
This video was a great help programming my Baofeng and my Tidradio radios. What a difference on what i can pick up now.
