Europe isn't this utopia that everyone makes out. It's only been peaceful for the last 90 or so years. Otherwise you can see with all the micro states, cantons of Switzerland which doesn't even have a single head of state, it has SEVEN, yes SEVEN coequal heads of state. The autonomous countries within countries like Catalonia in Spain. These arrangements aren't there by accident. They've come about after a lot of war and strife
Yes this is true! While the Middle East has gone through many periods of peaceful prosperity, such as the Islamic Golden Age, or the stability of being mostly dominated by the Osman Empire, Europe has gone through centuries of chaotic forever-wars like the religious conflicts of the Reformation or the devastating clashes of ideology of the French Revolutionary/Napoleonic wars. Europe being mostly at peace now is kind of a miracle!
@@surroundgatari TBH even in the Soviet era, 70s and 80s there were MANY separatist wars. There was the iron curtain, ETA in Spain, the IRA in Ireland. The breakup of Yugoslavia. There are a lot of fights and political disputes that gets glossed over
Well WW2 only ended 75 years ago 60 million dead probably more , then a Cold War with Russia, IRA vs Great Britain, Croatia/Bosnia etc etc … it’s constantly having skirmishes between the big wars ,, napoleon, ww1 and 2…
World history is full of strife. Considering the advancement of the weapons of war, it's amazing to me, that there isn't more wide spread conflict today.

This fills me with sadness. So many dead and displaced, across different religions and cultures. So many kids growing up surrounded by conflict and division. I hope the young and confident people of the middle east can rise above division and generational trauma and bring a new golden age to their home.

They would begin at the end of the 400 year old Empire of the Ottomans at fhe end of WW1 Because the Arabs started to attack and kill the Jewish peoples after they were not protected any more by The Ottomans .. Even the Grand mufti of Jerusalem preaching his followers to attack Jews in the 30s and 40s & Praising Adolf Hitler.. he even visited the NAZIS concentration camps in Europe Praising them...... You may ask why all the hate for the jews !. .... Its because in Islam it says , paradise we come to earth when they kill the last JEW finding him hiding behind a tree.........

This is such a great documentary - I am going to require each of my kids to watch it. My one complaint is that it would have been nice to start with the fall of the Ottoman Empire after WWI and then go into detail about how the various Mideastern states merged from that including the colonial power and UN involvement. These things are mentioned in passing but I feel like more groundwork there as a preface to the rest of the documentary would have been beneficial.

I'm from Philadelphia USA and we have rich history here but it seems like the revolution and George Washington happened last week compared to old school middle eastern history. I don't see why the Israeli-Arab/Palestinian conflict is seen as the most pertinent issue in the Middle East. Out of all the Middle Eastern conflicts this has by far had the least deaths.

I think the geography of the middle east plays a big role in it's amazing ancient history. It's desert landscape, with fertile river valleys and great weather was much better of a place to begin civilization than Europe was, as Europe is essentially a big, cold, dark, hilly forest, lol!

11:50 RIP Anwar Sadat. It is a tragedy that peace makers are often killed by their own people. Anwar Sadat was a great middle-east leader and peace maker who was viciously killed by Egyptian muslim extremists despite how his peace deal helped Egypt. It is truly a tragedy but we thank God for great leaders like Sadat who are willing and daring to make hard but necessary choices.
Eh, he sold the Palestinian cause to regain the Sinai. Why normalize relations with a clear-cut invader instead of retaking what is de jure yours through conquest?

it completely disregards the fact vikings were not the original inhabitants, viking settlements ceased to exist by the time of the british, vikings and brits are both white but not the same (askenazi/mizrahi), and ancient viking presence is not enough to justify a widespread ethnic cleansing of natives

I am fascinated by the name of your podcast since I attended Al-Hikma University in Baghdad, administered by the American Jesuits. It was the best institute of high learning in Iraq. The Jesuits were kicked out in January, 1969, and the university was converted to yet another Islamic school for utter mediocracy. Outstanding summary.
Jordan indeed provided citizenship to Arabs fleeing Israel in 1948...but not to those fleeing after the 6 day war...to this day, even the grandchildren of those people, caught up in the politics of the region have not been given Jordanian citizenship, how terribly sad.

Jordan expelled the Jews however. And Jordan has stripped Arabs of citizenship for demographic reasons.
The 6 day war 1967's start could be Nasser's bluff, or Nasser really did want to start a war. The narrator says "after Nasser made it clear" he intended to start a war.
He blocked the straits of Tiran, blocking Israel access to the red sea, which is in effect declaring war according to international law.
We still want war with israel
He absolutely made it clear he wanted war . He EXPELLED UN peace keeping troops from the Sinai border of Israel & Egypt and like the other commenter said, he blocked the straits of Tiran , violating their ceasefire which is an act of war.
The revisionist history attempting to justify his actions doesn’t match the facts
This is one of the great lies we teach in western history. We like to start the story of the 6 day war at the point where Egypt moved troops in. Unfortauntely, there was a lot of context that is missing here. Egypt and Syria had an alliance, and Israel was baiting Syria into fights by moving on Syrian territory. There was polticial pressure on Egypt to "make a move" but Egypt itself could not afford to actually invade Israel. As mentioned in this documentary, Egypt had just undergone a very costly war in Yemen. In addition, the Isreli military at the time was much stronger than the Egyptian military. So; why would Egypt invade Israel? Short answer.... they weren't going too. Obviously, this isn't a popular opinion. But do some research yourself. Learn about the months and years that led up to the 6day war. You might find some uncomfortable truths...

1:21:18 Throughout this video and the history of the Middle East, there were so many examples of great leaders who worked to achieve peace and progress for their people and countries, even at the expense of their lives. Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin and King Hussein of Jordan. I can confidently say that King Hussein (RIP) was the best example of a leader and a peacemaker. How ironic that a monarch ended up being among the most liberal-minded and far-seeing leader, especially compared to saviors-turned-despots like Nasser and Saddam etc.

Totally agree, and it’s ironic today that the most successful Arab countries are monarchies, and most Arab republics have failed.
This shows that people don’t care about freedom and democracy like the media said, but about development and prosperity; bringing kids to good schools, studying in good universities, working in good jobs, being treated in good hospitals, practicing religion, dying in peace.
And this life journey is what monarchies did for their people, like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and others.
Atypical that a monarch is that forward thinking - but certainly not impossible - he was a true leader of his people and wanted what was best for them. I agree King Hussein is and should be well regarded in history.

After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Britain and France drew some lines on a map and called the spaces between those lines countries without any regard to what the local populations thought.
But they always had a chance to unite together n create Arab league.
Instead, sectarian fights began.

I must say it was a bird's eye view history of the middle east, great work. There is request of making it's part 2 in which Yemen, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain history is to be added if possible.
Kuwait and bahrain are tiny and largely irrelevant. Oman's history is mostly internal and they didn't really participate in foreign politics/chose to remain neutral in any conflict. Yemen is very important but it's ultimately defined by which foreign powers are supporting who, which is already covered in this video
The Middle East history? Cheap OIL for USA was the answer then, and it is the answer now.

@@ajchosen3703the "Middle East" is an amorphous, imagined, politically convenient concept. At times it expands even to be the "Greater Middle East - such parameterizations are useful for colonial, neo-colonial, imperialist, military, geopolitical endeavours.
The boundaries shift and change based on necessity/will of especially Euro-Atlantic Western powers.
Sometimes we have seen imagined projections of countries like Libya for example, be considered part of this politically useful term.
It is therefore sometimes better to think in terms of Asia - the "Middle East" essentially often referring to Central Asia, West Asia, and North Africa.

Thank you! I have pured through history books and articles and got lost. This provides personal insights, like what Saddam Hussein witnessed as a young man.
It might have been intentional but you skipped very key historical aspects related to the WW1 and WW2 that led the creation of Israel and how/why it happened. That is a dirty and very complex moment of our history. International interests played a major role in a number of interventions that destabilized the region. The same was done to Africa and Latin America (Asia as well for decades but longer ago).
Yes started in 1880, England was to expand its territory, by 1914 France and Russia joined in to destroy the ottoman empire and Germany. Promising great ritches in local precious metals and oils. To the Victor goes the spoils...
Him leaving it out is the reason why I feel like this wasn't the complete truth as those events define more the fighting for the lands

The history in the region has such a rich, deep culture. Empires of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia are the most important cultures of the world, that brought the world so much, and the countries in the region have a lot of natural resources. Persians, Arabs, Egyptians brought scholarly knowledge to Islam. With some of the Greatest scholars from these people.

You forgot the treaty of independence of 1936. Syria officially became independent that year with our first modern president : Hashim Al Atassi (president from 1936 to 1943) just before shukri al Quwatli (who completely removed French military presence in the Syrian republic, Quwatli is seen as a hero in Syria even more then Atassi however)

He mentioned that they withdrew due to diplomatic pressure. It was a diplomatic win not a military one but didn't go into details

Im not sure if it is in the human DNA or something else, but all my life (in history) all i have seen mostly is the atrocities humans inflict on other fellow human beings since man walked on earth. We only have one planet (not planet b), yet we still can't seem to find oeace to live amongst eachother politically, we always seem to think its alright (it isn't) but to go war (which is immoral on all grrounds) i hate it when i see humans destroy themselves like this. Ive seen enough of that from europe, the middle east and africa, this three continents have had forver wars (only europe has recently/sort of found peace, its only recent that europe is basically at war with russia again), while the mid east (it is tough) and the same thing with Africa (it's really tough there too).

I consider myself an amateur historian, but my education has been far, far too Eurocentric up until now. This was a really interesting, informative documentary that taught me a lot about the context behind so many of these conflicts, and I'm going to try and learn even more.

You mention that in 1956 Israel fought with France and the UK over Nasser's nationalization of the Suez canal. The truth is that Israel didn't care about the canal, but went to war with Egypt as a result of Egypt's blockade of the Tiran straits (an overt act of war) and also due to Egypt's support for repeated Fedayeen raids from Gaza into Israel during the 1950's. The UK and France plotted to use Israel's attack as an excuse to "protect" shipping in the canal. Israel captured Gaza, the entire Sinai peninsula up to the canal and opened the blockade at Tiran (at the most south-east tip of the Sinai). For Israel, this was a military success, however, due to US pressure, the UK and France had to retreat from the canal. Israel returned Gaza and the Sinai to Egypt, getting UN protection at Tiran and along the Egypt-Israel border. In 1967 Nasser ordered these UN troops to leave, blockaded Tiran again and threatened to invade (and eliminate) Israel - leading to the 1967 war.

Regarding Reza Shah Pahlavi, It is true that by the outbreak of WWII, he was pressured by the Allies to expel the German engineer and contractors. And at first he did in fact resist such a demand, but he eventually gave up to the pressure imposed on him and subsequently expelled all Germans from Iran. However, this still did not satisfy the Churchill and Stalin. So, despite that fact, the Allies still invaded and occupied Iran.
And regarding Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, despite what some people assume, he was not reinstated by the British. In fact, British didn’t even want the Pahlavi dynasty to continue in Iran. They were planning to reestablish the Qajar dynasty instead.

It does. To survive in the desert you need to be ruthless and do everything to ensure your clan's survival. This means constantly fighting rival clans over limited resources. Even though modern technology has made this problem less relevant, the culture of clan infighting remains a key component of the areas peoples.

You missed an important fact: In the 1967 Six Day War, Israel did not attack Jordan, but rather the Egyptian military command (who now controlled the Jordanian army) ordered Jordanian forces to open fire on Israel. Israel responded to this attack and drove the Jordanians out of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

This was a joy to watch, never knew how chaotic the middle east was and has been since after wwII, I can now better understand why todays greater mid east continues to be chaotic, economically and politically fractured and an example as how not to govern a complex country / society. In such a chaotic and fractured landscape I can see why Nasser would be seen as a saviour. The mid east is crying out for good governance with honest accountable governments who work for the prosperity of all, seems they are still far from this.
