The potential wealth that could be exploited in all of Asia was going to be a target from Europeans. With the start of the industrial revolution, capitalism and the money that came from that, they were always going to struggle to stay independent against any European nation. It was less of a case of “if” they were going to be conquered but really only “when” and by “whom”.
However, given the wealth of the Indian sub continent during the pre-raj period, it would be very interesting to know how history could be different. However I look at places like China in the 1700-1800s, that stayed independent but in the end were still controlled by external countries. So would parts of India truly stayed free of colonial rule/influence, even if they still had nominally independent rulers?

Infact the Durrani Emperor Zaman Shah was an embitious ruler and wanted to be like his grandfather Ahmad Shah Durrani, he wanted to go on expedition to India even before the envoy of Tipo Sultan , but the envoy of Tipo Sultan gave him a more good affortunity . He was on his way to India after negotiations with the Sultan of Mysore. Zaman Shah even reached lahore with his army but the rebellion in his empire made him return to surpress the rebellion. I would say that it was a very unfortunate moment for all the people of Mysore, Bengal, Ud , Awath , Marata, Mughal and Afghan Durrani empire that they didn't come united to fend of the British but fought among themselves.

Tipu’s and Mysore’s tryst with silk began in the early 1780s when he received an ambassador from the Qing dynasty-ruled China at his court. The ambassador presented him with a silk cloth. @@muhammadpasha313 Well, let's not get too carried away. Sure, there is definitely a lot more nuance than what is often shown by the average hard-line nationalist, but that doesn't mean there weren't any major divisions between the two civilizations.
There are plenty of examples of these weird alliances. In the 1683 Siege of Vienna, the Ottoman Muslims were supported by the Hungarian Christians, and the Polish-Lithuanian Christians that broke the siege were reinforced by Lipka-Tatar Muslims.
Does that now mean that there wasn't a clear division between the Muslims and Christians? Let's not fool ourselves.
There was also the Abbasid-Frankish alliance against Al-Andalus, or the Andalusian-Byzantinian alliance against the Abbasids. These complicated alliances often happen, but don't be fooled. These were shrewd decisions, not genuine friendships.
In the context of the Subcontinent, there were always bastions of Hinduism in the hills of Nepal, the mountains of the Deccan, and the valleys of Ahom. There was always a clear line between the Hindu and Muslim kingdoms, particularly for the elites.
Remember, divide and conquer can only work effectively if the people are already kind of divided.

My favorite passage from my least favorite Rory Stewart book briefly tells John Malcolm’s origin story. During his Indian Civil Service exam, an East India Company director supposedly asked the 11-year-old Malcolm “Little man, what would you do if you were to meet Tipoo Sultan in Mysore tomorrow?” To which the boy replied “Do sir? I’d out wi’ me sword and cut off his ‘ead.”
It shows how very different the British Empire and its mindset was from today’s UK and how much of a thorn Tipu was in the Empire’s side.

I think Tipu Sultan is over rated. I don't mean to deny that he gave a hard time to the British. I'm only saying is that his legacy is more superficial than real. I say this for 2 reason: -
Firstly, his sphere of influence in the Indian subcontinent was pretty small
Secondly, he was not the only tough opposition to the British. After the First Anglo Maratha war, the British didn't dare to attack for almost 25 years. This also applies to the Sikh Empire. They didn't wage war against the Sikhs as long as Ranjit Singh was alive. But it took a mere 10 years after his death for their territory to be lost to the British. So even if we imagine that Tipu had live for long and managed to defeat the British, he couldn't have stopped them from ultimately taking over the Indian subcontinent.

Tipu Sultan was a CRUEL and BRUTAL ruler who enslaved Indians, looted everything he could, and force-converted people, or had them killed if they refused to convert and were unable to pay the jizya (Islamic tax charged onto infidels, which gave them free revenues to build their wealth). Edward Clive (1754-1839) as Governor of Madras, bears responsibility for the defeat and death of Tipu Sultan (1750-99), the ruler of Mysore.
Funny how muslim historians have tried to shift the looting claims to the British while the entire country was already looted by muslims centuries before the British were offered trade contracts by the Maharajas to persuade them to come to India.

While I agree that historical figures should be seen with nuance there is some historical basis to the allegations made against Tipu Sultan. There are evidences of persecution of Hindus and Christians. It is argued that he only did that in enemy territories but it is persecution nevertheless. Furthermore I don't know if he can truly be considered to be an Indian freedom fighter. Even from this video itself it seems obvious that he saw himself more as Muslim than Indian. Also his struggle against the British might be somewhat overrated. He did indeed give the British a tough time but so did the Marathas and the Sikhs.
    Basically...
Was Tipu Sultan a significant historical figure? Yes.
Did he fight the British? Yes.
Can he be counted as a freedom fighter? Somewhat dubios.
Was he a benevolent ruler? It's complicated.
Did he persecute non-Muslims? Somewhat yes.
Was he exceptionally evil? By the standards of his time I'd say not really.
Was he a hero or a villain from an Indian perspective? A bit of both and also neither at the same time. One of the more complicated historical figures I'd say.

This video inspired me to have this weird, maybe crazy, but still amazing what-if idea. What if Tipu Sultan reached out to Catherine the Great for help in the war against the British influence in India. This might ended up helping her with her foreign policy in long term. After all, she is remembered greatly by many things but foreign policy is not one of them. At least, according to her grandson, Tsar Nicolas I. Plus, Catherine the Great always wanted to gain access to trade with India. So I think that this will not only helped her foreign policy but also achieved one of her goals during her time as the ruler of Russia. And I guess this is where Alaska became an important strategic location for Russia. With a fleet directly constructed and ported at Alaska, the Russian naval forces can directly come down to the Indian subcontinent to assist Tipu Sultan one way or another. At the very least, distracting the British fleet and forcing the British troops in India to fight wars on two fronts. Catherine the Great did have grand foreign policy aims, to retake ottoman lands and create a Greek speaking revival of the Roman empire with her son or grandson (can't remember which) Constantine as it's monarchy, it's why she kept giving Ukrainian cities Greek names.
      She also split up Poland.
Yeah she wouldn't get involved in India, logistical difficulties, her troops would have to walk their though multiple hostile states which Russia wouldn't conquer till the next century, then Afghanistan, then through India and then fight a much better quality army to boot, half the army would die before it even got to central Asia given the numbers they'd have to support out in the steppes. A war would get be an opportunity for the British to burn her navy, then become paranoid and strengthen their position in India even more, the suggestion of the possibility was far more valuable than actually trying it, as it gave some leverage in negotiations with the British to both the sultan and tsarinia.

Generally, I love your work. But in this case not so much. Much more research had to be done before going into the making of this. I'm from Mysore and I'm proud of Tippu for many of his qualities, particularly with the valor he fought with the British. But unfortunately find a lot of discrepancies too in this video. Many of the reforms & administration practices that you mentioned are originally done by the Wodeyars - The Maharajas Of Mysore. KRS Dam was built by Sir M. Vishveshwarayya under the leadership and finances of Maharaja Krishna Raja Wonderyar the Fourth, hence the name Krishna Raja Sagara. You should also have mentioned how crookedly Tippu took over the Kingdom of Mysore and imprisoned the Maharani & her young son. I also know several families who were the descendants of the Kodavas and Mangalorean Catholics who were captured and tortured by the Tippu. I hail from a family who saved many Catholics of Mangalore region who had been under the Tippu's persecution. If I start mentioning the atrocities of Tippu, then I can go on and on.
So next time when you're making a video of some historical personality please make sure you have done your thorough research.

Genetically probably there was a south Asian woman in there somewhere (which is it’s own complicated history with regards to female agency in intereligious clashes) but by his own words and actions he didn’t perceive himself as such, and most of his actions today would be perceived as traitorous; a la the invitation to France to fight the Marathas and British, the invitation to Turkey to invade the North, the destruction of several major temples, the massacres of around 90,000 people (Hindus, Jains, Buddhists), titling himself as the Shah of Bharat (a completely alien term that imposes foreign rule over Bharat). I think so many things can point to the facts that neither did he see himself as Indian or behave with an Indian moral framework, but he never acted in the interest of the idea of India and aligned himself with the foreign invaders (ie the Mughals, who incidentally while being born in India saw themselves as Turks and Persians and mercilessly massacred mixed family members so they couldn’t take power).

    Afghanistan
After facing substantial threats from the Marathas, Tipu Sultan began to correspond with Zaman Shah Durrani, the ruler of the Afghan Durrani Empire, so they could defeat the British and Marathas. Initially, Zaman Shah agreed to help Tipu, but the Persian attack on Afghanistan's Western border diverted its forces, and hence no help could be provided to Tipu.
    Ottoman Empire
In 1787, Tipu Sultan sent an embassy to the Ottoman capital Constantinople, to the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid I requesting urgent assistance against the British East India Company. Tipu Sultan requested the Ottoman Sultan to send him troops and military experts. Furthermore, Tipu Sultan also requested permission from the Ottomans to contribute to the maintenance of the Islamic shrines in Mecca, Medina, Najaf and Karbala.
However, the Ottomans were themselves in crisis and still recuperating from the devastating Austro-Ottoman War and a new conflict with the Russian Empire had begun, for which Ottoman Turkey needed British alliance to keep off the Russians, hence it could not risk being hostile to the British in the Indian theatre.
Due to the Ottoman inability to organise a fleet in the Indian Ocean, Tipu Sultan's ambassadors returned home only with gifts from their Ottoman brothers.
Nevertheless, Tipu Sultan's correspondence with the Ottoman Empire and particularly its new Sultan Selim III continued till his final battle in the year 1799.[69]
