THANK YOU for this video. I hope now all the TECHNICAL-ADDICTED haters will understand Anette is really talented, charismatic vocalist with very wide-scaled, unique voice. DEAL WITH IT, HATERS :P
Anette is good studio singer, nobody denies that. Also nobody ever would be able to sing Scaretale and Slow Love Slow as her. The problem is live she had trouble with singing the songs right, sometimes even on her ones. With some training (by this I don't mean operatic), she would have the needed confidence at live performences.
Annette, Meadows of Heaven sound check (live) ua-cam.com/video/hWaTutowjBU/v-deo.html The problem is that there is no great quality Anette's official live songs in UA-cam. Most stuff you get is fan recorded or the two TV concerts. The other TV concert video has muffled audio (Montreaux jazz fesitival), and people cut songs of it and reposted them. My favourite notes from her are without doubt the improvisations from the final chorus of Amaranth. 8:28 is just one of the most intense thing's I've heard on tape. Definitely my fav. Nightwish vocalist. No contest.
She's a light lyric soprano without any training. Her head voice is undeveloped and it's reason why she has never shown a really high soprano notes yet. With classical training it would be more obvious that she's a soprano.
Eugenic fan totally agree only perceived that when she left the band, she would be very agile and capable of hitting the high notes she always struggled with had she the proper training. Her voice is very light but then again she has very good lows, that is my favourite part of her voice.
I believe she's a lyric mezzo... Her voice shines in the mid to D5 range, and "soprano" notes seem generally out of her comfort range. Her tone is "childlike," but that doesn't mean she's a soprano. Also, her lower register is much stronger than the average contemporary soprano. I think her voice is much closer to Barbra Streisand's than it is to a soprano's.
Listening to her, I think she's a lyric mezzo-soprano. Her voice is soft and sweet, but she shines more in the middle range, and her F5 show that she struggles with the higher range (I also think I have more or less the same range as her and I'm a mezzo-soprano).
You are right. I was focusing on the dominant, and at 6:50 it's really an F5... But don't forget about that C7 she hits singing Slaying the Dreamer live.
Yes, indeed a mezzo-soprano. I actually misinterpreted her voice the first time I listen to her. I thought she's a lyric soprano. Sooner, I realize she's not. She has a very strong low notes and powerful middle notes.
If that shit counts to I can expand my range from C#3 - C6 to C#3 - A6 easily. I can make a weird and high noise with my voice that counts as an A6 :v and I don't even need to screm lol
She really has a gorgeous voice... She's amazing. I find it so annoying, because I am also a fan of Tarja, and when I go on Tarja's videos, I constantly see people dissing Anette. They really haven't given her a chance, have they? Love you, Anette AND Tarja
Anette is so fucking amazing great!! I love her and love her voice!!! I thought her limit was in the "5 notes" (I used to think that she could hit a G5 at much) but I am really surprised!!!! Her voice is so wonderful, I loved this video, it goes to my favorites :)
About that Bb6, isn't that whistle voice? I'm no musical expert - can't even hear the difference between head voice and chest voice, but that note doesn't sound as either to my ears.
I'm actually surprised that her range isn't bigger, but then again this may be strictly her strong range. Who knows, there may close to another half-8va of whistle tone on top of that Bb6. ^_^ I -3 Annette, wish I had a voice like that!!
A good extension to the lows, and a limited high range. -at least using that technique she has-. Probably with head voice in a proper imposti she should be able to sing a E6.
Oh, come on! That's some next level delusion. Go learn a thing or two about vocals and then come back again with the same comment, telling me that Anette is better than Tarja and Floor. LOL!
Yes, range, colour and tessitura (i knew it means texture, but i was told that tessitura also is the part of the "chord"(?) were the voice is comfortable). That's why i said people cannot classify a voice just based on range and it's limits. I have known sopranos with light voices and they cannot go higher than high E but a heavy voice owner may have that pitch. That's why I think Anette is soprano, even if her highs are limited, just as you say, i think it's for lacking training. ouch, worst X)
Андония Рабаджиева There is an B♭6, but it wasn't a controlled note. It's the pitch at the very end of the glissando that Ms. Olzon performed in "Slaying The Dreamer" at that concert.
Yeah. I don't know her, but she might be a soprano leggero coloratura for the high note :O I can't even name a song containing a note higher than F6. I love high notes though.
Yes he is :) He's credited in the album, his name is Guy Elliot (he does the lead vocals, there's another soprano boy called Tom Williams doing backing vocals in this song too)
This is kindof a misrepresentation in that it shows studio footage up to G5, and the rest is live....and i also think that in the live footage she starts to lose it at Eb5 just sayin...i don't hate. I just don't think her vocal range goes as high as Bb6 . Nothing wrong with that, i think those songs were just wrong for her. Her voice is lovely aside from that, up to eb5 approx. where she starts to lose it. She shouldnt push herself beyond that, unless of course she can train herself to do so, if she did, that would be wonderful, but until then it only makes her look bad. I hate what happened to her, how nightwish fans shitted on her...i'll admit i was guilty of it too...but realize that the songs were just wrong for her (older stuff) it was a big role to fill...i dont know what happened and i dont pretend to know, but i know, that she will be far better off without nightwish, and hope for all the best for her. if only she would see this.... God Bless you Annette,
Agree with the contralto thing :D However, I don't think of Anette as a mezzosoprano o.O for me her voice is too bright for a mezzo and her lows are pretty spoken and with a lot of air -almost like whispering-. Indeed, I am a high soprano, can reach E3 (my lowest atm) but it's -definitely- not easy, if it were not because vocalizing i wouldn't dare going lower than B3 or A3...
+WeirdD ShittT hahahaha I laughed at this part too... this was a live of slaying the dreamer in the beginning of her career in nightwish, I think she simply doesnt know what to do, then she screams hahaha
High pitches are beautiful but I'd give low ones some love too. Not because they are harder (that would depend on each person's voice), but because they are as beautiful as high ones!
LMAO Man you beat me already. I've been workin on her Vocal Range Video since I didnt see one already. BUT mine is only for her vocals in Nightwish so itll be from D3 - G5
The same here, but just as you said, POV maybe. So true, and even if she were forced to choose, she would probably stay in the medium. That's also true, plus with a microphone you can fool people. That's the cruel reality D: but IT IS a truth.
I am so happy with this major fan of her also an even bigger fan of tarja but the new nightwish albums is great and part of it is her gift to make it so awesome
Edit your title. Her vocal range is up to G#5, not Bb6. It's the highest note she can SING, not SCREAM. And apparently she's an alto, not soprano. Sopranos can go way higher than G#5, and not as low as D3 (not that I know of).
Kevin Blank It's not that they're similar per se, it's that they have similar qualities. Both Anette and Florence have the ability to switch between a sweet, beautiful head voice, and a brassy, almost harsh belt. Take TPATP for example - at the end, ("be still my son, you're home...") Anette sings in a beautiful, sweet head voice. In Scaretale, she sings in a rough, almost jarring, belt. Florence does the same sort of thing - see her high notes in "Leave my body" vs her belted midrange/high notes in "Rabbit Heart."
+Meowphistopheles Oh, now I see your point, and it's true. The difference is that Florence's live vocals have more quality, I mean, she's far more faithful to the studio version, at least in my opinion.
Are you sure about this? 'coz for me she sounds like a woman with light voice and i do thnk she can sing an D6 easily -using correct technique- but a D3... for me sounds like very low -and don't have a keyboard near :s- anyway, just wondering. but thanks for uploading a vid about this :) people was anxious indeed
That could be a different point of view, but in the way I was taught about it was how I explained it, a more external and objective judgment of the voice. And if we take it as you said, talking about comfortability, Anette would be the only one that can tell what she is, but as she is not interested in classical music I doubt that she would care to classify her voice. There are lots of wonders on the world of sing, every voice it's unique, but not always interesting, at least to me. :P
Still,we can't be sure if she would be an alto without her vocal training. And being an alto or a mezzo, doesn't mean you are less trained than a soprano.
Sharon a mezzosoprano!?!?!? but of course not! her colour, her tessitura and her range are definitely that of a light soprano :O! her lows are terribly done her voice goes all breathy and her highs even when are stressed are definitely in head; she's always singing in head voice. Also her vibrato is not pronounced, proper of a light voice. Anette definitely is soprano, but as you said she has no training either that's why she shouts the highs -or used to-; what i think is that Anette has ...
@bonestorm99 Nop, you are wrong :D She is a soprano, Contralto voice is so dark and the highest Contralto belt is a E5 or F5 in some cases, but she is an amazing soprano, no matter what you say :D
So, according to TheRangePlace (therangeplace.forummotions.com/t603-anette-olzon), she hits an A5 in "The Poet And The Pendulum". What are your thoughts? I definitely hear a higher harmony note at the end of the bridge (right before the last chorus) on the "Spitting on his grave as they CAME", which Ms. Olzon definitely goes for in live performances. Is this where the A5 is?
@MarlonBSB ohhhh, the hell, that would be honestly high D:! of course sung it with full open throat would be quite awesome. Anyway, I like her, she's like a nice person -no idea, uhm, she looks like XD?- oh, btw, thanks for taking your time aswered my question :) nice day!
oh, I get it, so it was a lack of communication then, how weird in NW haha...I haven't seen her performance of that song after that show but if you are telling me the thruth, thank God she stopped to do it. =P
I don't know if it's her rather young tone, but her voice sounds higher than Ms. Jansen or Ms. Turunen's, so I'd hazard that she is a soprano. Also, in one performance of "Song Of Myself" on UA-cam (actually a pretty good performance by her), the F3s sounded a little forced and short (especially on the "verse of bore" part). I really think that if she actually had some substantial vocal training (according to Wikipedia, she takes vocal lessons as she feels she needs to), she could easily access her head voice and belt without shouting.
+AmyandKellyRock Are you fucking kidding me? Yeah, she's good, but she could never, and I mean NEVER sing the songs that Tarja and Floor sing. She is not even close to a soprano.
Well actualy I watched just recently a voice coach analyzing either Tarja or Floor, and she said that all the Nightwish female singers were sopranos. According to her Tarja was a dark voice color soprano, Anette was light colour, and Floor is between them.
I don't know nothing about notes and soprano or mezzo soprano BUT i like Annete's voice because of her colour. She is a good singer and i love her way who sung most of Tarja's songs. She didn't try to copy Tarja she always was herself and i do i respect her for her dynamic and her capabilities to cover some Tarja's songs so good, different from Tarja but beautiful. I do i like the siren , sacrament of wilderness, ever dream, Kuolema tekee taiteilijan and especially higher than hopes with Annete's voice. I prefer mostly annete's voice from Floor's in Tarja's songs. I believe she gave new life in oldest songs. Annette is unique as Tarja too. From me who have nothing knowledge about music and c3 or Bb5 said nothing to me but I like her colourful voice and her emotions in her singing. That's enough for me. She is not Tarja thankfully. Because if I want to hear Tarja,i will listen Tarja not a copy of Tarja but i do i like some songs of Tarja's with Annete's voice because they are different like new songs. That's my opinion 😉 only of course. But i do admire you for your education and training to music. I wish to had some knowledge about that.
@gibonijuliano i see that you have no musical idea, the Bb6 is almost an octave HIGHER than C6 ;) she might sing C6 at max! that gives her less than 3 octaves
What? ....but the whole motive to classify a voice into a tessitura it's because of the range and texture (Tessitura means texture in Italian), it was the way to assign the characters on an opera or the melodic line on a choir, so they could reach each part of the character or voice part on the opus, also there are the variations that classify more the voice (Dramatic, Light, etc.) but that it's more an assignment on the texture of the voice. And no hate, just don't care.
Well, we don't "decide" vocal range. We create a compilation from the lower to the higher note ever sung by those artists based on what we've heard from them until now. There's no program - it's done by hearing the note and telling what it is. A keyboard is very useful when you are not sure about a specific tone. Hope I have explained it well. :)
***** Thanks! By "decide" I meant as in "figure out". Thanks again for answering the question. That was very helpful! How do you tell head voice from chest voice? Is it through experience or is there an "objective" way to figure it out? I've been browsing sites like The Range Place and it amazes me how people can listen through a vocalist's whole career including bootlegs and all to find out their highest and lowest career notes. (That particular site seems to be dominated by just a handful of people).
Head voice and chest voice have different placements in the vocal tract. Someone who sings would have a better instinct for hearing the difference, but even if you don't sing, it just takes a little experience to start to hear the difference. Each singer is different though - it helps to have a clear studio version of a song where it's easy to tell the difference; then you can start looking at live performances and low-quality bootlegs and applying what you know about that person's voice.
D: no it's not. If you pick C4 as central C. some women CAN actually sing it -specially mezzosopranos and contraltos, but even some sopranos can, I do know a dramatic soprano who can sing a C3.
but her range is not that, that was just a flaw, her range is up to F5, range means you can sing the whole "range" till a point thus putting the Bb6 is wrong, she can't even sing a C6 etc etc
I could be wrong but from the little experience and the knowledge i got from vocal lessons, no i don't think she's soprano or mezzo... she could easily hit high notes if she were but she uses her chest voice more as the owner of the vid said too.. and yeah she killed the last note.. in a very bad way... if someone knows something more than me, feel free to reply and correct me :)
I'm pretty sure she is a mezzo, you can compare her voice to Sharon Den Adel of within temptation, also a mezzo, but they don't have a classical technique, and with their own use of it they sound more bright but with that register it's easily to notice that they are mezzo, they have the inclination for center-low notes and you just realize by the screams she felt like to give at most of the old NW songs that her high register is very limited. her tone is very light but her register is limited.
No. Anette isn't dramatic soprano. Such type of voice has very strong upper register (much stronger lyric soprano). Anette started as soprano with light timbre typically for soubrette. But later her voice matured and as for now she feels comfortable to sing in middle register. Song from "Imaginaerum" have tessitura of lyric contralto/ dramatic mezzo-soprano. And, as I can hear, Anette doesn't have problems with singing it. So nowdays her voice type can be described as lyric mezzo-soprano.
@SakumaRyuichiNG err, you're taking middle C as C5 i assume? ... if you take C5 as middle C... the she would be singing 2nd octave as a baritone o.ô... ... Bb6?That will be higher than the high F/F6 of the Magic Flute -picking C4 as middle C- (and doesn't sound like that) as well. imo, it's confuse. ah, and just to be clear; not trying to pick a fight or being rude ok?
I love this woman! She show me that felling is the most important thing in singing!
D3.... I'm shocked!))
I like the way she uses head voice in Ghost Love Score!! Like a princess))
She's AMAZING.
Her belted notes are everything! Love "Amaranth"! Great Video! :)
THANK YOU for this video.
I hope now all the TECHNICAL-ADDICTED haters will
understand Anette is really talented, charismatic vocalist with very wide-scaled, unique voice.
DEAL WITH IT, HATERS :P
Anette is good studio singer, nobody denies that. Also nobody ever would be able to sing Scaretale and Slow Love Slow as her. The problem is live she had trouble with singing the songs right, sometimes even on her ones.
With some training (by this I don't mean operatic), she would have the needed confidence at live performences.
agreed she is simply amazing
Annette, Meadows of Heaven sound check (live) ua-cam.com/video/hWaTutowjBU/v-deo.html
The problem is that there is no great quality Anette's official live songs in UA-cam. Most stuff you get is fan recorded or the two TV concerts. The other TV concert video has muffled audio (Montreaux jazz fesitival), and people cut songs of it and reposted them. The other has a horrible video quality and bad audio (Exit festival).
My favourite notes from her are without doubt the improvisations from the final chorus of Amaranth. 8:28 is just one of the most intense thing's I've heard on tape. Definitely my fav. Nightwish vocalist. No contest.
I was just as surprised as my friend to hear her hit those notes in Scaretale. Very impressive.
Great video! I really love Anette's voice.

she is mezzo-soprano
She is SO AMAZING :D I love her voice and her Charisma
She has more impressive lows but uncontrollable highs, thus she's a lyric mezzo.
She's just a mezzo, not lyric. :)
Rehn Stillnight More of an undertrained dramatic mezzo... Mizuho Lin of Semblant can show her who's the Queen.
Her voice is beautiful ♥
You are right. I was focusing on the dominant, and at 6:50 it's really an F5... But don't forget about that C7 she hits singing Slaying the Dreamer live.
Yes, indeed a mezzo-soprano. I actually misinterpreted her voice the first time I listen to her. I thought she's a lyric soprano. Sooner, I realize she's not. She has a very strong low notes and powerful middle notes.
Anette Rocks and kick ass with her G#5 in live
I'm proud♥
That Bb6 was more of a vocal crack than a real note xD
Bb6.. Yeah lol
Ya, I wrote it wrong XD
If that shit counts to I can expand my range from C#3 - C6 to C#3 - A6 easily. I can make a weird and high noise with my voice that counts as an A6 :v and I don't even need to screm lol
Denise Lisboa That is a nice range, you are a mezzo or a soprano?
Marcus Rafael Ferracin
more like a mezzo..
Awesome ! She's Beautiful
Adorei! Amo a Anette, principalmente porque ela usa bastante voz de peito e eu também uheuheu
you forgot the song: the heart asks pleasure first. at the end of it, Anette sings veryvery high
such a detailed video! Awesome job!
I'm not sure if it's true but I read that Anette hits an A5 in the Chorus of For The Heart I Once Had and in Higher Than Hope.
If only she could get some classical training and extend her head voice, she'd have a hell of a range and better technique. She could be fantastic.
What a great video.... thank you. She is my favorite female singer.
She really has a gorgeous voice... She's amazing. I find it so annoying, because I am also a fan of Tarja, and when I go on Tarja's videos, I constantly see people dissing Anette. They really haven't given her a chance, have they? Love you, Anette AND Tarja

I'll never get tired of watching this video over and over again
During Bb6 I was like "WTF?!". But I still love Anette's voice. Shit happens during live performances anyway.
I love her voice on the Alyson Avenue stuff. I'm interested to hear her solo album in a couple months.
Nate Alexander buy the dark element
that Bb6 is just an uncontrollable scream!
About that Bb6, isn't that whistle voice? I'm no musical expert - can't even hear the difference between head voice and chest voice, but that note doesn't sound as either to my ears.
That was hurting her voice...her voice was forced to reach a higher note :/
It was simply a voice crack.
ANETTE IS SOPRANO!
without that Bb6, would her vocal range be D3-G#5?
A5.
Great video good Job!
Nightwish has lost a lot of fans, dismissing Anette. Anette is the best NW singer, better than Tarja and Floor.
Oh, come on! That's some next level delusion. Go learn a thing or two about vocals and then come back again with the same comment, telling me that Anette is better than Tarja and Floor. LOL!

What a wonderful voice Anette has! :D
But WTF is her scream in slaying the dreamer? I laughed a lot XD

New Anette Vocal Range Video up C#3 - F6
Check it out!
these are the best NIghtwish songs !! espect of her colo career :)
Bb6 live at 9:26 is such a joke :D that fucked note is horrible xDDD
LOL anyway i laugh everytime i hear it :D
WeirdD ShittT Is better than the screams of piso jansen :D
+WeirdD ShittT hahahaha I laughed at this part too... this was a live of slaying the dreamer in the beginning of her career in nightwish, I think she simply doesnt know what to do, then she screams hahaha

The Bb6 is not a exclamation, so is valid.... It's Pretty AMAZING :D
LMAO Man you beat me already. I've been workin on her Vocal Range Video since I didnt see one already. BUT mine is only for her vocals in Nightwish so itll be from D3 - G5
She is amazing. I love her, she is an inspiration.
The same here, but just as you said, POV maybe.
So true, and even if she were forced to choose, she would probably stay in the medium.
That's also true, plus with a microphone you can fool people.
That's the cruel reality D: but IT IS a truth.
@Aberdific indeed D:!! people always crying about "high pitches this, and that and blah blah"... they have no idea how damn hard low notes ARE!!!!!
I think that she would be a dramatic soprano her lowest chest notes are a lot more powerful than even a full lyric soprano(which Tarja is btw)
I am so happy with this major fan of her also an even bigger fan of tarja but the new nightwish albums is great and part of it is her gift to make it so awesome
Finally a video about this
@ordinarywatcher1 She has about 2 and a half octaves.
Edit your title. Her vocal range is up to G#5, not Bb6. It's the highest note she can SING, not SCREAM. And apparently she's an alto, not soprano. Sopranos can go way higher than G#5, and not as low as D3 (not that I know of).
I don't know if the Bb6 really counts, that note sounded kind of screamy. But still, great video :)
@bonestorm99 I don't wanna fight :D She is an AMAZING SOPRANO*O* I love her so much, Let's Go Anette lml
me encanta oirla en estudio en vivo es algo sin descripcion no se compara con su propia voz
Don't get all the hate, I love Anette's voice
+Kevin Blank Seriously, She has that amazing combo of brassiness and sweetness. Her voice is similar to Florence Welch, IMO.
+Meowphistopheles I love Florence too, but never thought that their voices were similar, but now I'm interested to know your reasons to think that

Are you sure about this? 'coz for me she sounds like a woman with light voice and i do thnk she can sing an D6 easily -using correct technique-
but a D3... for me sounds like very low -and don't have a keyboard near :s-
anyway, just wondering.
but thanks for uploading a vid about this :) people was anxious indeed
That could be a different point of view, but in the way I was taught about it was how I explained it, a more external and objective judgment of the voice.

@tigerboyPT Could you please tell me the title of the video because, for some reason, the stupid thing won't open the link?
@flowerzofblood HEP HEP HEP HEP!!!!!!!! NETTIE ES SIMPLEMENTE.....GENIAL!!!!!!!
Anette definitely is soprano, but as you said she has no training either that's why she shouts the highs -or used to-; what i think is that Anette has ...
gonna miss anette
@tigerboyPT Oh, you're right. She hits C7 and briefly C#7!
Anyway, I like her, she's like a nice person -no idea, uhm, she looks like XD?-
oh, btw, thanks for taking your time aswered my question :)
nice day!
oh, I get it, so it was a lack of communication then, how weird in NW haha...I haven't seen her performance of that song after that show but if you are telling me the thruth, thank God she stopped to do it.
DPP is written for a soprano voice, but then i appreciate her performance on that album.
Man, I love Anette, but please, this was a shout, not a Bb6 '-'
What? ....but the whole motive to classify a voice into a tessitura it's because of the range and texture (Tessitura means texture in Italian), it was the way to assign the characters on an opera or the melodic line on a choir, so they could reach each part of the character or voice part on the opus, also there are the variations that classify more the voice (Dramatic, Light, etc.) but that it's more an assignment on the texture of the voice.
And no hate, just don't care.
By the way, how do you guys decide vocal range? Are you running it through some computer analysis software or can you tell by just hearing the note?
Well, we don't "decide" vocal range. We create a compilation from the lower to the higher note ever sung by those artists based on what we've heard from them until now. There's no program - it's done by hearing the note and telling what it is. A keyboard is very useful when you are not sure about a specific tone. Hope I have explained it well. :)

Thanks!
Need some programs for this.
Head voice and chest voice have different placements in the vocal tract. Someone who sings would have a better instinct for hearing the difference, but even if you don't sing, it just takes a little experience to start to hear the difference. Each singer is different though - it helps to have a clear studio version of a song where it's easy to tell the difference; then you can start looking at live performances and low-quality bootlegs and applying what you know about that person's voice.
great video
Which performance of Slaying the dreamer was that? I want to see that video. If someone can link it to me that'd be AWESOME
D: no it's not. If you pick C4 as central C. some women CAN actually sing it -specially mezzosopranos and contraltos, but even some sopranos can, I do know a dramatic soprano who can sing a C3.
@tigerboyPT No, I don't think anyone can reach G#5 in chest, I believe it's mixed voice.
@Pucyotto I know lol...her fans called it ''belting''...yeahh, sure...
@sahara0587 she is a rock singer...and I like her belting
but her range is not that, that was just a flaw, her range is up to F5, range means you can sing the whole "range" till a point thus putting the Bb6 is wrong, she can't even sing a C6 etc etc
@lacrimaangelux besides... some of this notes are singed live!
Bb6 is even higher than the last note of the Phantom of the Opera (which is a E6).
@Nightimaginarium claro sis!!! pero no, no es princesa, NETTIE ES UNA REINA!!! :D
So nowdays her voice type can be described as lyric mezzo-soprano.
can somebody put here all the titles of the songs in the video?
my question is: because it does not make that same "high notes" in live concerts?
@SakumaRyuichiNG err, you're taking middle C as C5 i assume? ... if you take C5 as middle C... the she would be singing 2nd octave as a baritone o.ô...
... Bb6?That will be higher than the high F/F6 of the Magic Flute -picking C4 as middle C- (and doesn't sound like that) as well.
imo, it's confuse.
ah, and just to be clear; not trying to pick a fight or being rude ok?
