Extermination: Avalanche Reviews

- Survival horror has always been an obsession of mine, but the only problem with such an obsession is running out of games. I'm getting down to the bottom of the barrel now, and recently stumbled upon this ps2 release from the first year of the console's life. Can Extermination be the game that makes a Jill Sandwich out of Resident Evil?................Well obviously not, but let's take a look anyways

“Most will see as a pile of garbage”, said no one ever that enjoys this genre of games. This gem was ahead of its time in certain aspects like real time weapon customization for one, this game deserves a remaster.
Yeah
If I could choose a remaster for any PS2 game it would certainly be Extermination. Without a doubt.
@@-neuro Hmm, Shadow of Rome? If that one had gotten a propper remaster + expansion for 360 and PS3, it could have been a decent competitor to the Souls series. Combat was good. After 7th gen though, people would just think it's a cheap DS clone.
I'd say it deserves a full-on remake
Played it and beat it for the first time weeks ago on a ps2 emulator and to me it is bare bones and lack any scary or creepy factor and has bad music and lackluster enemy designs but maybe because this was a ps2 launch title so it's to be respected
I fucking LOVED this game, from playing on a “Jam Pack” disk from getting an actual copy of the game... I played this game for so many years & beat it a thousand times, but it’s still a very fun and underrated game. I bought 3 copies of the game over the years cause I love this game so much.
I was pretty damn psyched for it when I saw screen shots in magazines, but I ended up forgetting about it eventually. Glad I picked it up though.
YOOOO i had that same jam pack too when I was a kid. I was like 5 or 6 years old when we had it, and the extermination game within it scared the hell out of me back then. I would always watch my brother play cuz I was too scared to do it myself. Ahhh, memories.
Same dude, I would always play this on Jam Pack. I ended up buying it the full game 2 times because I lost the 1st one, I recommend this game to people that like survival horror games. If you really think about it the game had a “Infection Meter” and later on RE Outbreak had a similar thing which affected the player the more infected you were.
Did that Jam Pack also have a demo for Final Fantasy (forget which one it was)?
Hahaha dude that’s exactly how I found this game out too!! Fuck yeah. I wish I had this copy I can’t find it for my ps2, I luckily beat it before I retired my ps2
Fun fact: the guy who made Deadly Premonition and D4 was this game's writer. I guess everyone has to start somewhere.
Ha! No way! Well, that actually explains a lot.
Wait, he didn't start with D and D2?
@@CatalystOfFire those are unrelated series
@@shadowrage2593 I never realized that!! They seem so similar.
Wait, Swery wrote this? Huh
The demo of this game scared the shit out of 6-year-old me.
I remember seeing screenshots in magazines and getting a little spooked myself.
Same I was like what have I done once I started playing
lmaooo bro so true
One day this game will get a remake
I don't know, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
Yeah I’d go for a remake over a remaster, just because a remaster really won’t make it worth it IMO, I’d love to see the game altered like re3
We can only hope for it lol
It isn't a looker, no, but in all honesty, Extermination doesn't look that bad for a PS2 game.
For sure. There is some bad art here and there, but it still has some great looking aspects.
This was one the best HORROR games back in my old days on PS2! Best story line and very sad at the point Dennis had to finish off roger his best bud. This game always gave me the creeps and nostalgia at its finest! Remaster of this game would absolutely amazing as I’m sure Sony has the IP for this game still. BEST GAME 10/10
Extermination is one hell of an underrated survival horror game.
Underrated gem on ps2, extermination is the best. If I had to choose which game I would want to play
Code Veronica or Extermination.
I'll gladly pick Extermination
Lacking a Steve really puts this one ahead! Also I don't really agree with his criticism about the bacteria. He said it was water but it is the bacteria in the water. Seems neat and if you say it beats Code Veronica I'll give it a try.
I'm going to say something sacreligous here. I would rather play this than re4. It's closer to true survival horror.
Found it today for 10 bucks cib! I'm duration off my ps2
If you played this game you must agree that it has that "The Thing" feel (what got me to play the game in the first place). Another underrated game and gem. Be nice to see a reboot of this game...Don't you think?
Yeah, it definitely had that thing feel. I'd love to see another shot at this one.
@@AvalancheReviews way late but this game reminded me a lot of Cold Fear which is also in your genre if you haven't already looked at that one.
This game was one of my favorites it really made me feel like I was struggling throughout the game and had alot of creepy/tense moments.
I had this game stuck in my head for about 10 years without knowing it's name.
love your reviews, man. been binge watching them all day so far
I actually played this beauty back in the day, and I was amazed by the graphics and the gameplay. I did enjoyed it. It has it's problems but nothing unmanagable. Revisiting the game about six months ago, I noticed that the final boss is almost exactly the same battle concept as Irving's boss fight in Resident Evil 5. funny.
Oh yeah! It totally is! Ha! I didn't even notice that, and I just recently played through 5. You're right though, this is a pretty cool experience for survival horror fans. I do think the difficulty ramps up too high towards the end, but it was still fun.
@@AvalancheReviews Played European version back in the day, (more military version of Denis and voice acting was just slightly better) so I'm not sure about this version, but, dude, I already had a grenade and a rocket launcher option for my weapon at the end so it wasn't that hard.
I was always too scared to play this as a kid but it left such an impression on me that I've been searching for anyone else that's aware of it just to make sure I didnt hallucinate it, this game doesn't get talked about enough.
I remember getting this demo when I got first got the ps2. Absolutely loved it!! When I got the game, I was not disappointed in the slightest. Very underrated gem of a game!!
For the early ps2 genre of survival horror games this doesn't look that bad. Sure it doesn't come to date with the graphics we see in games today. But this looks good. For a PlayStation 2.
It does, and doesn't. Sometimes it looks great, but remember how great Silent Hill 3 and Onimusha looked? They killed this game graphically, but I'm sure they had bigger budgets too.
Avalanche Reviews who made this game? Just wondering
@@Killer_Kris7 The long defunct Deep Space Games... Not even sure who owns the rights to this game Lol...
"How would a virus know how to shoot a gun?"
God, I wish somebody told that to Capcom when they were developing RE6
I love your reviews. I hope to see more. Keep doing what you do, you're awesome! 👍🏽
+Maximo Smith Thanks man, that's awesome to ear!
Holy shit, thank you for reminding me of one of my favorite games as a kid. I must have played this 100 times. I don't remember anything about it but when I saw that hand x-ray photo in the thumbnail I immediately knew what is was.
Rad review. I have recently been getting back into my PS2 collection always looking for more to add to it.
+Karrott2cents A lot of hidden gems on the ps2. I think people kind of pass it up because it's not exactly modern, but not exactly retro.
Great review dude
Such nostalgic feelings damn
Dude I loved this game when it came out. I still remember buying it on release and playing it (and beating it) all night in my parents basement. I just picked it up again and can't wait to replay it
I remember this game, not too shabby back then, never did beat it though. Excellent review, my brother-in-horror!
+The Dali Popka It's not a game a would recommend to most, but I did really like it.
Good video. Looking forward for it to redo. This game could really go with a remaster/remake
YESSSS i love extermination a lot! it’s one of my favorite games ever, even tho it does leave some to be desired LOL very glad to see people still playing it! as a kid, this game was SO revolutionary to my brother and i and taught us both a lot about gaming! plus the story was very emotional for the two of us to play and very riveting when ur young. it doesn’t hold up as well but the nostalgia factor draws me in hard... thx for a good review!!
i brought this game back in 2001 when got my ps2 i thought it was a good game.
It is.........sort of
Viciouspiked - that's because it was a good game, i also bought it back then and i loved it.
I remember owning this game back in 2001. Glad to see someone review a game that is even obscure against the horror horror community. Glad someone else remembers countdown vampires lol. I had high Hope's on that one as a child. :(
Ha! Yeah I actually have a video planned for Countdown Vampires.
*lol Countdown Vampires =), I am a Silent Hill freak and I also had the same problems like you =), you always discover something new though* *which you missed, 'Echo Night Beyond' 'The Suffering' 'Ghosthunter' and Extermination were such great finds for me. Not really survival horrors but Ghost Master [The Gravenville Chronicles, and Shin Megami Tensei Lucifer's Call were surprisingly great horror games I found which I never heard of before.*
I fell in love with this game, got it a week or two after playing the demo and loved it even more, it’s not perfect but there not much of anything I’d change
That intro song.. it's dope. What is it? Also, good review. I'm considering going through that. Never actually got to play it.
Really liked the fact you have the one gun innthis game. Contrary to what COD and other games have taught us most soldiers don't carry a sidearm. The logic is you taking up space and adding extra weight when you could just use that to carry more ammo for your primary. So the fact you play a Marine and you play the whole game with his M16 is definitely immersive and it at least covers all the bases with the attachments. It would be pretty stupid seeing that Marine drop his infantry rifle for a cartoonishly overpowerred .357 revolver.
Remember hating this as a kid, but considering I played it so often, must have been something about it I liked.
I played this back in the day as a kid on the PS2 and it was one of my favorite games of all time I love the old survival horror games you should check out Carrier for Dreamcast another survival horror game that takes place on a ship/tanker if I remember correctly.
That game keeps shooting up in price, and I've been on the lookout for a cheap copy, but I'm thinking of just getting a reproduction. I am definitely planning on reviewing it at some point.
I played it when I was like 7, it was absolutely terrifying
Back in I think it was middle school or late elementary school I played this. It was my birthday and I was given a BUNCH of PS2 games from my next door neighbor because his dad had so many games it was crazy. This one always stuck out to me the most because it was my very first survival hororr game
It's nice to see the T-block camo being used in this game.
Better than RE6 and I even think Dead Space and RE5 ripped some of the concepts from this game :) This needs a proper remake or sequel :)
I'd like to see something like that
Re5 literally stole the boat boss fight
Well apparently I’ve heard that devs who made resident worked on this game?
No way. This game is a reason, why I love this genre and I feel a lot of nostalgy just by looking at this, but first and second Dead Space was much, much better.
Nice one! You just got me a new game to try!
I remember Extermination being one of the best early games on PS2
I still remember the reviews in game magazines. Good times seeing those terrible looking corpses in the screenshots.
This game was my teen-years. It was one of the few games still functioning when I took over my brothers PS2 and I played the shit out of this game, found and did everything in the game multiple times. At that time I was pretty new to gaming and was astounded by this game until I found other games xD
I received this game for free when I bought Max Payne from a store called Game Crazy (Now defunct). I had forgotten about this game and Game Crazy since. This video was very nostalgic for me.
Just discovered your channel from Censored Gaming! Ace up man! Subscribed!!! XD
+Kaz Kobb Fuck yeah! Thanks!
So researching this game was interesting. I guess it was originally planned as a sequel to deep fear for the Sega Saturn. And although it didn't end up being that it had the same writer and the stories are similar. Even the creature designs are similar. There was a sequel planned for the ps3 called world apocalypse which never happened.
Man, i just like your reviews. Not so many youtubers give the attention to the hidden gems of 6th gen - and the attention is much needed here, i think.
Thanks!! I've noticed too that people don't seem to care much about that weird kind of in between generation. Don't worry you'll be seeing a lot more of it on this channel. Some of my favorite games came out in that generation.
Awesome! I've never had a console at that time myself, just a PC (a really old one which was decommissioned from my parent's workplace), as none of my friends did, and the libraries for the different systems were much more different at the time, so it is very interesting to know about that sort of "backbone" of the other platforms, like smaller names in niche genres with less budget.
That's exactly how I fell about the Sega Saturn! I never played any Saturn games until recently, and I'm loving discovering all these new titles.
Nice work. it is sad to hear how few survival horror game we know are few in numbers now a days but this is a rather interesting game. Although being a pistol man I'll have to take a look at this game it looks interesting and the aiming mechanics makes me feel like this is an early prototype aiming we see in Resident Evil.
I got that feeling too. Maybe a precursor to cold fear.
+Avalanche Reviews or that.
Ah I remember this game, god I'm still happy that I have it. Definitely shows it's age, with the models, and voice acting. Since it came out during the time when the ps2 was still very new was to showcase how well the system worked since I remember playing this on a demo disc and was blown away a console could do something like snow effects and water so well, gotta keep an open mind with it since its so old. The enemy designs were nice, and hell one of the artists even went on to do art for DMC 3 & 4. The composer has a huge list of things they've done as well. If this game were to get a remake I think it would be a good game honestly.
this was the first horror game i ever played! and i LOVED IT!! i still do....it may be cheap but i love it! i wish it got a sequel
I've had this game for years and never had the gumption to beat it. Now I'm inspired to give it another try. I do have that old school horror itch.
+FodieOneShinobi I was in that same position. It has been on my shelf forever, and I just figured I'd give it a try. Glad I did.
This game came out on my birthday, I adore this game so much! I played it when I was very young, and got to revisit it twice a few years ago, I played it over and over and my first time I didnt manage anything very well... So I had to try again, but thats okay, you find stuff you missed the first few playthroughs! Oh yeah, and there's new game+...
I remember playing this game, underrated and a very good one
Remember playing this one. Did you ever try Hellnight for PS1? Also if you did not. Take a look at the SNES Version of Clock Tower. It only came out in japan, but there is a translated version on the net.
I've been looking for this game for so long cause all I remember is watching my brother play it when I was little and always having vague memories of this game
How's your brother doing
I remember playing this game on a demo disk back when I was like 6 or 7 and it was my first real introduction to survival horror. Still never played the full game tho
It's.........well it's something, that's for sure.
Iv played it on the demo disk to then decided I was going to rent it from the local video game store come to find out the demo looks just like the real game except the demo had demo written on it so I took a black maker colored it in and kept the real one
My name is Andrew and 3:29 freaked me out LOL! Made me realize a lot of games don't have that name.
Your fucking vids man! Still Loving them
pretty cool review man! Keep up the good work pal
+Aksys Havik Will do! Thanks man!
i just found you, your an awesome youtuber, subbed and hope to see more of your vids : D
+Evarksman Thanks!! Glad to hear it!
I remember this being a near release title for the PS2. Not the highest quality release but there weren’t many options so I rented it. Honestly looking back it sort of had that Dead Space vibe and atmosphere. Not even nostalgia can make me want to play it again, but it’s not really a bad game. Just middle of the road.
Oh, Blue Water, Blue Sky? Are you serious??
GGXX music is SO AMAZING!!))
I remember playing this when i was a kid it was my first survival horror game
Speaking of ancient playstation horror games, did you ever play space griffon vf-9? Random curiosity
Resident evil never used to scare me. This and silent hill used to scare the shit out of me so much that I could never get far past the first levels in this game. I have a lot of the intro cutscenes memorized tho
Really? I wish I would have actually played this game when it came out. I might have been more likely to be scared by it.
@@AvalancheReviews Yeah I would just replay the first half of the game over and over. I was more afraid of the beginning before roger turns than the actual whole game. basically stopped once the game made you have to start doing platforming. I still have it though so maybe one day after my backlog
I watched my dad play this as a little kid. I'd love a remake to play it
Ok I gotta check this gane out simply for the fact there finally a survival horror game with the most incredible weapon in the history of the world...the Masterkey.
Ha! I like your style
I really enjoyed this game back in early 2001, to be fair there was barely any good PS2 games at this point, however revisiting it years later, ugh I don't think the controls age well at all. The main character always reminded me of Kevin Bacon for some reason.
He did have a Kevin Bacon look to him, didn't he?
I feel like I enjoyed this review more than I'd enjoy the game itself, seems a tad bland and/or generic to me aside from the weapon customization. I am a lover of survival horror though so if I come across this one in a bargain bin for 100 yen I'll likely give it a shot.
+KidShoryuken That's pretty much the attitude I had. I will probably never play it again, but it was interesting enough to finish. No joke, I saw it in a bargain bin in a Kita bookoff for like 130 yen.
EXCELLENT!!! Also, have you ever played 'The Thing' for PC? One of my personal favs, despite its rather severe issues. What about Penumbra Overture?
+Written Word Not only have I played the Thing, but i also did a video on it. As for Penumbra, I have never really been a fan of the first person, no combat, style of survival horror. I've heard people rave about it, but I just couldn't get into it myself.
5:13 "Every marine, a rifleman." 🪖
This game looks so early 00s tps that it's crazy man.
I just posted my video review of this game almost a week ago and for some strange reason, I find yours slightly better than mine, despite the fact how much I can relate to playing it back in the day. There is another game Deep Space (developed Extermination) made before they folded and when the English translation is complete, I'll definitely post a review and it's something you should check out as well.
Hmmmmmmm, I never heard of it. Definitely gonna look that up.
Great review!
Thanks man
I was wondering; what's your opinion on Condemned?
Fucking love it
Potential for a review? I think the game is criminally underrated. btw. keep up the good work.
+Arthur Wild oh for sure! I can't wait to replay it. Thank you man, much appreciated.
Many video reviewers criticize the graphics a lot, but they run at 60fps, which is kind of awesome for such a primal PS2 game.
I agree, that is good, but 60fps was more than norm on the ps2 than the exception. Due to the way the game processed frames, bellow 60 fields per second, would actually tax the resources a shit ton.
@@AvalancheReviews No idea about that, too technical for my PS2 knowledge haha, but I think this game is interesting. Never had the chance to play it back then. I think I'll buy it along with the two PS2 Contra games.
Good work bud! Man, I didn't know you were scraping the bottom of the barrel of Survival Horror games already. Say... I DO know of this one on the PSP you might like.... ;)
You talking about that corpse party game?
+Avalanche Reviews ...Maybe? >.>
+SuperDerek RPGs I don't know......I may dip my toes into the series one of these days. I hear there's an entry on vita or ps4, that's actually available in English.
I think I still have this game
This game is one of my first PS2 games and even now decades later, I still have the original game I bough at EB Games used for $7.99. It may be rough around the edges a bit, but I cannot recommend this game enough. If only it could be re-released for purchase on PSN with trophies!
I was digging on this game but hit a wall with the difficulty spike . Decided to trade it .Interesting game though but way too hard for me at the time. The gun customization was so damn fun!
First TPS survivor horror. Great game for what it was in 2001 after the fixed camera pixel PSX games.
I beat this game so many times as a kid i loved it
I played this when I was young, never got to finish it because my father snapped the disk in half.
Well that sucks
@@AvalancheReviews don't worry, I got a new copy after about a decade
You’re not alone
I really have a soft spot for this game--this may be due to my fondness for all things inspired by The Thing and/or my bias for the director of this game, Swery65, but I do think there's a lot to like about this game once you look past the rough edges.
In some ways, it's like the PS2's answer to D2. Both games have their flaws, but the steps they took to make their stab at survival horror interesting should be commended.
+JXZX1 Agreed! I actually never knew Swery65 had anything to do with this. That actually explains a lot, ha!
I know I've seen the box art for this game before, but I've never really looked into it at all. The story definitely sounds like someone made it through a Resident Evil madlib. You are an elite officer on the team called (STARS/Red Light). You have been sent to (Raccoon City/Antarctica) where you encounter monsters in a (mansion/research base). These monsters have been mutated by the (T-Virus/H0213 Bacteria). :P Hehehe. Joking aside, this does look like a game I'd be interested in. I'll have to pick this up next time I come across it.
+RPGtourguide That is the perfect way to describe it! It's crazy cheap too. If you're a survival horror fan, you definitely get at least a little kick out of it.
RPG Tour Guide actually RE ripped of first the developer of this game with his first game and they seem to have ripped him off again for RE4 with this.
I personally like it, and after you beat it the first time, you can actually play it again, with all your attachments, however the trade off, is the enemies become harder. The soundtrack is really good as well
I liked it too. I just had a real hard time with the last 25 percent of it.
Avalanche Reviews yeah, the last 25 percent gets ridiculous, basically when the base gets taken over by H2O1 the difficulty really spikes. Also I can explain why when infected you get hurt by the water, something about H201 causing deterioration in the infected because the strain mutates. It’s written in one of the files.
i finished this sometime in early 2003. the game was fun but def a weird one. especially when you beat it and get to hear the developers odd choice for the end credit song.
one of my early ps2 demo discs had this on it. I remember playing it for 2 hours or so it felt like and it just kept going and going. I'll always remember it as a the never ending demo disc. THe game was a lot of fun from what i remember, the only reason i stopped is because my friend came over.
For a survival horror fan, it's interesting, and a but fun. I think most other people would hate it.
i recommended as my nomination for my video game book club's game for october. Hopefully it gets the votes>
+nate it gets my vote!
That's the first time I've ever heard someone from the US use the phrase "tits up" 😂
Feels like the thing
love it!
*_zoinks!_*
I loved this game as a kid
Thank you for blessing this video with your comment. Praise be to you!
Avalanche Reviews ofc kind sir!
We need a remake of this game. I played the ps2 version and loved it
I would be interested in that
how do you do that roll???
Hi! Is it worth $14? That's the average price of a CIB copy at ebay. I collect PS2 survival horror games and I've been delaying the purchase of this game for very long.
Probably. I played it, it was good. I thought capcom made this game.
@@aniplax Got it a week ago. I also got Nightmare Before Christmas, developed by Capcom, by the way!! It plays a lot like Devil May Cry, no wonder!
omg, this game lol. I played this game right after playing Silent Hill 2. I thought it was sooo bad. Looking back I think it could have its charm...maybe but would rather watch a review (like yours thank you) than playing it again ^^
+barbe00brune Ha! Yeah it doesn't exactly stack up against other survival horror games on the ps2........at all.
The only thing that I remember from this game is the code that was written on a window that you had to read backwards lol
Personally I’m the kind of shooter gamer who likes to wield an assault rifle as a primary and a pistol as a sidearm/secondary. But given how certain military units work, wielding only an assault rifle with the occasional weaponized underbarrel attachments does make sense since it’s the bread-and-butter for literally any military unit. And in most cases, it’s all they need. But honestly though, having a sidearm does not hurt one bit. You never know when you need to switch to your pistol when it’s faster than reloading.
Edit: I’m a bonafide PC gamer who LOVES to mod open world games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Fallout 4 most especially where I modded the hell out of the game replacing certain armors/outfits and weapons that don’t make sense to have around. Plus I also use said games to create main characters that are in storybooks I’m writing. Every once in a while though, I love to fall back to the good old days of the PS2 and it’s thanks to PCSX2 that I can replay this childhood lost gem that I have never finished.
I remembered playing this game back who knows when. I did play this game, and I played it A LOT as a teenager. I’m not sure why I was thinking about it today, and I couldn’t even remember the name of the the game. I had to search so many things until I finally saw the box art and got the name.
Even to this day, I’m still saying this game and Dino Crisis should get a remake, really. I’m really loving the RE remakes, and being able to play the original Silent Hills are great, but it doesn’t always have to be zombies and biblical nightmare fuel. Sometimes other games like this one and Dino Crisis are perfect just out of sheer story and fun. Yeah, the game could use a lot of love, from the dialogue and voicing to the plot and game play, but this was a big thing. You could hang from the ceiling and shoot things, you have freedom to run around and jump and stuff that no RE game or Silent Hill can do, even in 2020. I mean, this was one of the first games to break the pre-rendered background, tank control games for survivor horror (I think). Well, most tank controls. You still had to stand in one spot while shooting. I’m glad developers figured out you don’t have to stand still to shoot a gun. This game really should be a cult classic, but it would be a really fun game to play today if they remade it.
Love this Game..
I don't know why this guy hates the game so much. Extermination was awesome back in 2001, and it's awesome even in 2020. It needs a remaster.
Exactly
I still love the game to this day and yeah despite its flaws but it gives a John Carpenter’s The Thing. My favorite part is the boss fight with Roger and song with the Roger boss battle was sad and epic at the same time.
