I'm so glad you enjoyed Covert Ops/Chase the Express. Honestly, it might be the most underrated PS1 game ever. Most critics completely dismissed it as a bad RE clone because they were too focused on the PS2 launch. But it definitely deserves a look! I'm kind of sad this series is coming to an end, but it's been awesome seeing these new and familiar RE clones!
Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn is the video game/Re clone version of Under Siege 2 and I love it for it. Miss games like this now. Have a hard finding great badass military type games like Covert Ops or Syphon Filter Trilogy now.
"Chase The Express" aka Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn has one of the most amazing and action packed intros in PS1 history. I absolutely love it in all its cheezyness and horrifying human faces. The graphics are indeed just a 360° panorama mapped onto a sphere where the camera can freely pan around from a fixed point. I really like this engine and think it's a good spot inbetween "true 3D" and "fixed camera".
I still remember this game from the PS1 era called "Chase the Express" which was some kind of RE clone in terms of gameplay mechanics and design but didn't had any zombies or monsters in it, just human. It was a pretty good game for its time!!
Fun fact about Extermination: the US and EU versions have pretty big differences. In EU, or PAL, the soldier uniforms are black, Dennis has a different hair design, voice actors and dialogue is different and even the end credits music is 100% better.

Fear Effect is still one of my favorite games of all-time. It’s a little rough around the edges being 20 something years old now, but the story is pretty incredible.
Blue Stinger is unironically one of my favorite games on the Dreamcast after Shenmue, Code Veronica, and Virtua Tennis. It kinda sucks, but there aren’t many games with more charm.
It sounds weird, but I feel like I'll miss this series, I love hearing about obscure older titles, and hearing about someone actually having fun with them!
The director of "The city of lost children" (Jean-Pierre Jeunet) made a previous movie called "Delicatessen" wich is also a great movie with similar vibes. In the game there is a reference to this. See 27:45. He also made "Alien: ressurection" later...
I love Overblood. I shouldn’t, but I do. I grew up with some of the finest video games ever created (Mario 64, OoT, FFVII, MGS), but my fondest memory playing video games growing up was Overblood. Raz Karcy’s over acting and over the top death scream never gets old.
Exactly, I remember renting Covert Ops and absolutely loving it, unfortunately the disc was scratched so I couldn't get far. I wish Fear Effect would come back.
@metalmugen, There was supposed to be a remake coming for Fear Effect 1, but it's MIA. Fear Effect Sedna wasn't well received. So, it might have killed the remake.
So happy to see Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn on there. It’s a fun game (ignoring the best ending needs requirements) that mixes OG Resident Evil and OG Metal Gear Solid right down to weird setup for a train and the ripped from the headlines like plot. I highly highly advise people to check it out! Thanks Avalanche for mentioning it!
I'm glad Fear Effect is getting some love now. I found it by accident at a used game store while I was looking for a copy of Parasite Eve, picked it up for a song (like $5) and fell in love with it immediately
Jared the RE Clone series is my favorite Avalanche Reviews content, really enjoyed the videos👏🏻, I'll probably re-watch it again later this year! Based from your intro how about a Final Fantasy Clones series next?
The Resident Evil clone I loved was Ghosthunter. My friend lent it to me once and I really enjoyed it. It did remind me of Ghostbusters a bit (name and how you captured ghosts) but it was a lot of fun. In fact, because of it I sought out similar games and ended up getting Resident Evil Code Veronica.
Ya boy in Overblood running around doing finger guns the whole time had me laughing way harder than was probably warranted. That said, what I smoked before watching may have had a part to play in it all... 🤣
This just goes to show how much i don't remember extermination. I played it once in 2001 on release and i never really went back even though i planned to replay it and i think now is that time.
I've spent most of the late 2000s searching for unknown and underrated action games for the PS1, and I gotta say, Covert Ops might be the best one I found. Graphics and the gameplay are really good, but I recommend playing on easy the first time, because ammo is really scarce, and you'll miss a lot of shots until you get the hang of it.
Back in the day Something Awful had an article on Blue Stinger that describes the intro to the game as follows: "A few zillion years ago, a meteor fell and hit the Earth, killing all the dinosaurs and moderately wounding Dick Clark." Also, Jon St. John (AKA Duke Nukem,) did voice work for the game and he described it as one of the most torturous gigs he ever did. The voice director was Japanese and couldn't speak a lick of English so he couldn't direct the voice actors worth a damn. St. John said he had to do over 1000 takes of just reading the game's title because the director was never satisfied but couldn't/didn't offer any direction on how he wanted the take to sound and instead just said the name. Jon tried to imitate the director but again that didn't work so the take that made it into the game was a splice job of two different takes.
Thanks Jared, for doing all of these RE clones by the way! Not only did you open up my horizons on obscure overlooked games, but some true hidden gems in there in this series! Also, Nuclear Dawn is such a gem. I feel it was more inspired by Under Siege 2. As for next time, well, I can take a guess but no doubt it's time to enter the next entry in a certain franchise you hold dear in your heart. I look forward to see you on THAT retrospective.
Given that you showes Onimusha, I'm surprised Devil May Cry wasn't featured as well. It started of as a Resident Evil 4 prototype after and you can still see the connections they have, like the fixed camera or that you nees to pause the game to swap weapons
Overblood!!!!!!! Finally! I never realized how that it’s an older game and thus not a RE clone. I do however disagree that it doesn’t have much in common. Tank controls, fixed cameras, and people infected turning into green zombie like monsters. Back in the 90’s I always thought it was a cheap clone.
Every time I watch an installment of this series I have my fingers crossed the ps1 game fade to black will show up but looking back I don't know if it is close enough to count

Ahhh, Blue Stinger. I remember picking it up to hold me over until Code Veronica was released. It was weird but enjoyable game.
Yes! RE4 clones! That video series will likely be even longer considering the influence it has on gaming as a whole. Bring on The Evil Within games!
The City of Lost Children just makes me think of the Disturbed album “The Lost Children”
I never got into Disturbed. I remember liking that first hit Stupified, but that was it.
Oh they’re my favorite band, Believe is my favorite album so I’d recommend starting there.
Love these videos. Basically a collection of lists of games for me to pick up. Great job!
I’ve always had the feeling that Covert Ops was heavily inspired by the movie Under Siege 2.
Finally you included chaos break for some reason always seem to me like a mix between RE and Dino Crisis.
I bought the PAL version of Covert Ops (Chase the Express) on the grounds that it had tank controls alone 😆
Every time I watch an installment of this series I have my fingers crossed the ps1 game fade to black will show up but looking back I don't know if it is close enough to count
It's been a fun ride, but you had to run out of Resident Evil clones eventually. Now you can search out the Tactics Ogre clones!
Well this just made my day
Blue Stinger one of my favorite DC games
If anyone is looking for covert ops in the UK or pal regions, It’s name is chase the express, over here.
Didn't expect to see my boi Pipo in here!
Pipo, aka the best video game sidekick ever created.
