Thanks so much Pete! Yes, I also have some budget options - especially for paints - to trial ideas out. Ultimately, I do find that cheaper materials are harder to work with though, so, like yourself, it's quality only for the final pieces!
Understandable for sure. I know Gioconda is a very inexpensive group but I was shocked that their lightfastness was better than other very popular brands. Their barrels are not great and one would have to know how to knife sharpen. Each company or Google actually will show you the lightfast rating for them all. This is very shocking and why I pull out from all my groups except I think Caran ‘de ache only had a couple which was the best rating. I was upset even with Faber Castell and Carbothellos but at least you have the option to purchase what you would want.😊

Couldn't agree more about the Derwent's. I can only think they have a masterful advertising team because they always get a mention. But, tbh, I find them very lacking in pigment and tend to ignore them.
I think you much be right...they do have their place, like everything, but compared to other pencils for the same price I can't bring myself to use them very often! I do think that their colour range is impressive, but the usability lets the down for me.
There's another UA-cam wildlife artist (Jason Morgan) who tested the same brands on Pastelmat and came to the opposite conclusion regarding Cretacolor (would not purchase) and Derwent (similar to Faber Castell). Now I am confused.
Well sadly I have to say it is personal preference in the end! Get a couple of each and try them out. See if you prefer a softer pencil or a slightly harder one and see what you think about their colours 😊 good luck!
Hi Emily.. i am very new to drawing and painting i have done my first pastel drawing and liked it and am eager to start my second.. on watching your tutorial on pencils you keep referring to a dark bay horse that's against your wall.. have you done that tutorial as I've looked and so far haven't found it.. the next picture i want to try is a horses head of that similar colour... would you be able to help.. thank you for all the tutorials.. you have a brilliant way of teaching I've really enjoyed watching.. thank you Sue
Hi Sue, Congratulations on starting your pastel pencil journey! They are fab to work with 😊 yes, the horse is a course but it’s a paid one as it’s several hours long. I am quite careful with lightfast pastel pencils. I use Faber Castell products but be very careful if lightfastness is something that you care about. I pulled out the ones that are not lightfast. Their sheets are available even the company send them to you using pdf files. It is through all brands, I use Carbothellos, Caran’de ache, and surprisingly Gioconda, Faber Castell despite not all colors being great, they can be switched for a company they were higher in lightfastness. I don’t trust range because range may mean that they will fade. Even having about 10 from Caran’de ache is worth it. They are soft so I only use the blade to sharpen the ends. I use my sticks from various companies in the backgrounds and believe it or nor watercolor pencils and colored pencils can fill in without any noticing. I use all on Pastelmatt or homemade archival paper. ASTM and Blue wool scale does matter. So far I have found that Caran’de ache has the pinks and reds that are really bright and hold well on the scale. Some blues or many in Carbothellos I would be careful about and I was surprised about Faber Castell’s basic earth tones. Even though Caran’de ache is softer, if they are cracked, your company should replace them. Blicks will not charge me for them if that happens and I send them a photo. That is customer service. But any pencil I would not want to drop. I enjoy using the pencils with watercolor. I started out in watercolor and after I finish the wc part I use Art Spectrum multimedia and past primer in clear and I can bring in a softness that can happen in just one medium. Likewise colored pencils which are oil paint in a pencil with wax do beautifully and odorless mineral spirits in a waterbrush with the fibrous tip from Caran’de ache takes away the wax and weird shine allowing the colored pencils to blend and melt tight in. If too much primer was used on the edge just use very high grit sand paper and synthetic watercolor or acrylic brushes. It will be fine. I use Colored pencil final fixative or for pastel make sure that you use a superfine mist sprayer and block the watercolor and a quick spritz will work. If you find that it isn’t, the owner and the company will walk you through any problems if you have any. My pastels have never darkened by doing them correctly and not blasting them. 😊

I love their beautiful colors, but the matter is Derwent and Stabilo are very soft and easy to be broken even though I very gently sharpen their pencils, 😰it happened -- 、、 Would you recomend the best Sharpenner which can the lead of pastel pencils very sharp and not break it very easily. Hi Ken, yes they are very soft! To be honest I favour sharpening with a knife and sanding paper. Over time this becomes easier and easier. You will still experience breaks but it does mean you can make sure the blade is sharp 👌

Thank you! Ahhh...those lovely buttery pencils. Yes, I do like them and I have got a few in my stash since filming this. However, for beginners I wouldn't use them (partly the expense but also the handling). They are very soft, but have such an incredible pigmentation that they layer well regardless. I like to have a few for very 'punchy' colours (see the fish video) but in general save my pennies and use the faber castel set instead.
Hi Tina, I have to say I have never used, or heard of them used, on clay. I would imagine that the pastel could come off very easily if not fixed down, and, you might need to prepare the surface. Sorry I can't help with that!
I’ve tried a couple 😊 they were quite dry and chalky (might sound silly but other pencils feel more solid or buttery). They weren’t for me, but, they are a very good brand.

Whivh pastel pencils do you recomend for portrait?
For human portraits? I don’t use pastel pencils for human portraits but probably something softer like the carbothello would be good 😊
