I like both, but I find the velour actually looks more realistic because even though it doesn't quite have the really fine details of the pastelmat version, the feel of the drawing is different. The shadows just look so good.
I only use Velour paper and my results are fast and beautiful using PanPastels for my underpainting, then pastel pencils including Derwent and Faber Castell and I use NuPastel by Prismacolor for the super bold and bright colors (the black and the white is amazing) or for super fine lines. Nothing else compares to the results I get using this combination.
I love them both equally, but for different reasons!! The velour version is so painterly and soft, and the pastel mat one more photorealistic, I think. I'm excited to try the velour--already have some on order! Thanks for sharing!
The velour has a softness to it that is appealing, but when compared side by side with the Pastelmat, I would choose the Pastelmat every time for the richness of color and the how the details stand out. I think the final choice would depend on the mood you are trying to create. For realism, the Pastelmat, but for a bit more ethereal version, the velour sure is beautiful. Great video!
I preferred the Pastelmat but both are brilliant. I've never used velour so will give it a try. I have a set of Carbothello and Derwent and a few Faber Castel Pitt Pastels. I'll see how they all work. Well done for 2 excellent drawings which both have different qualities.
So interesting to know about the various pencils on velour I've used velour with varying results - I think you've given me the answer. Thank you so much - I think both works great - maybe stronger colour on Pastelmat which I like.
Never thought I'd say this as I've never had much success with velour but I think the velour was the best! Maybe I'll dig mine out from the back of the cupboard and give it another go😊
I think they are both great and the merits being what efect do you want. For a sharp crisp finish with lots of details the Pastelmat is great. The Velour gives a dream like finish and I think would be great for very young or more mature pets. Very interesting.
Nice perspective...the velour gives a subject a very pensive feeling. But you do need the right photograph to work with which can be tricky for pet portraits. Nice to have both papers!
Great info. Thank you for making the video. I really like the velour but i can’t invest anymore into buying the softer pastel pencils just to be able to use the velour.
I know the feeling...It was a painful moment when I bought three new brands for a new 'cheap' pencil comparison video (coming out soon). I quite like to collect individual pencils as I go along. It's much cheaper and gives you a feeling for each brand and which one you might want more of.
Both were amazing! I think I would still choose CF and Pitt, but might check the price on the velour and give it a go with cheaper pencils. I am a beginner and learning so why not. Thank you for the video 😊
Id say velor beats out the mat depeding on what you like. The mat has a softer look whereas the mat seems to have more punch in the saturation giving it a slight photoshop smoothed appearance whereas the velor looks more from life/unedited photo in comparison. You can see it specifically in the white and the tan (especially on the bottom right area) the difference in saturation which is likely the pastel pencil in mass tone in a near solid layer (mat) vs mass tone with a bit more of the paper showimg through (velor)
They are both fabulous but I think I prefer the velour version. I have tried velour and created a kitten on it but used too much soft pastel sticks and the pastel fell off when I took it to the framer, creating a ghost image on the glass! Amusing, but not so much after all the effort I went to. SInce then I have not used velour but I have a piece waiting for an owl portrait that is so beautiful and full of shadows. I am just scared to try again. I have been using Pastelmat all the time for my pastels and mostly have been successful with this. I love your art, and just wonder do you ever paint using an easel? I find it tricky for details
I think its a wash. A client not having comparison would think both beautiful. I think the softer look would be well suited if the personality fit and fur and shorter hair stronger angles in a breed the PastelMat. Getting tired of paper prices and pastel hikes so considering looking into velour and using Carbathello Conte’ etc. Love the rich shadows in velour.
I think I have to agree with you! I knew this photo would suit the velour very well but something else could have been awful...and likewise...prices are getting silly!
I haven't tried the velour paper yet but it does look similar to suede mat and if it is, I really like using that. I've tried pastelmat 3 times and each time it quickly went south and I never got a finished product from it. I know it has a huge following though so maybe someday I'll master it and jump on the pastelmat train. 🙂
Wow thank u for making thia video. i was able to use both of these 2 papers i would say they both have pros and cons. when it comes to pet portrait pastelmat is better choice but since im a human portrait artist i do love velour also.velour loves softer pastel that is why fc which is a harder pastel is not match with it.kohinoor pastel pencil match with velour that is also cheaper than the carandache.but in the end it will still depend on thw artist on how can she/he maximize the potential of the paper.like Emma Colbert she use more of velour on pet portraits.but i think the larger size will be much easier to make fur details
Totally agree! I'd love to try a large-scale velour piece of a horse. One of my favorite subjects and the opportunity to create incredible depth in the fur!
@@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820yes I thought a horse in summer coat would be very interesting using the velour and softer pastel pencils. Would love to see you do this. You do horses such honour the way you express their spirit
Pastelmat é visivelmente superior, mas ambos são muito caros aqui no Brasil. Uma informação que faltou neste teste é se realmente ele evita o uso de fixador, se realmente ele dispensar o uso de fixador é mais um ponto positivo para este papel.
Thank you Emily, it was a great and so much informative video. From the two time-lapses you have shown, I definitely prefer Pastelmat, though (IMHO) you are not so comfortable with Pastelmat and work on it the same as you do on Velour. I strongly recommend you to watch the videos of Dave Porters Art channel and see how he works on Pastelmat. I personally have learned a lot from Dave, and honestly, I have never seen anyone else with such expertise of drawing with Pastel Pencils on Pastelmat. Once again, I appreciate all your time and effort for making this video.
Thanks for your comment Manely. I have to say I love working on pastelamt as I do with the FC pencils but have loads to learn on Velour, having never touched it before this video. Let's see what the next few creations bring!
Velour looks more realistic. I've used it 3 times now and I want to be negative because pastelmat is my go to paper. But every time velour surprises me how quickly it comes together. I use NuPastel, stabilo and Rembrandt and they all work beautifully and fur is so life-like
Oh my goodness I was exactly the same! I didn’t think there was any way I’d be converted…but velour is so fast, forgiving and painterly I just love it 🤫
Is this whippet one of your full time tutorials art class on your website? Do your classes include outline drawings and reference photos of the subjects? thank you
Hi Elizabeth, this isn’t actually on the membership, although a whippet/greyhound is on my list of courses to create! You can always see what’s currently available at the bottom of the shop page, I have a photo of every course 😊
Hi, I'm like, in the middle of nowhere and the nearest craft store is quite away. Which paper/board would you recommend for chalk pastel users, something that I can blend easily and move around with my finger. Something smooth.😅
Hi! Hmmmm I'm probably not the best person to suggest this actually! I go for the other type of paper that grabs hold of pastels to be honest. If you want something without that velvet finish, you can pretty much go for any 'pastel' paper or multimedia paper and use a fixative as you work. I used to work on sugar paper a lot, it was very cheap and came in huge sheets. It's also gt a surface that lifts slightly and this will help prevent the pastel falling straight off it. That said, it's not a high-end product, so it's best for practicing on only.
I like both, but I find the velour actually looks more realistic because even though it doesn't quite have the really fine details of the pastelmat version, the feel of the drawing is different. The shadows just look so good.
You're so right! They both look real but in different ways...I swap and change between which I like more!
I love them both but think the Pastelmat has the slight edge. But both fabulous - and so like my own dog, Ellie 🐕
I only use Velour paper and my results are fast and beautiful using PanPastels for my underpainting, then pastel pencils including Derwent and Faber Castell and I use NuPastel by Prismacolor for the super bold and bright colors (the black and the white is amazing) or for super fine lines. Thanks so much, I'll have to have a look at NuPastel... 'oh no' another reason to buy more art materials ;)
@@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820 I know...right?!?! Sorry...😆😆😆😅,
Both are beautiful
Velour is really gorgeous with colored pencil, too. Most CP artists know Pastelmat does a great job, but are sleeping on how beautiful this is.
I love them both equally, but for different reasons!! The velour version is so painterly and soft, and the pastel mat one more photorealistic, I think. I'm excited to try the velour--already have some on order! Thanks for sharing!

I agree totally with you. I liked the softness of the velour, it has less of that photographic look.
I also really like the Velour from a distance...it draws you in more than the Pastelmat somehow.
I preferred the Pastelmat but both are brilliant. I've never used velour so will give it a try. I have a set of Carbothello and Derwent and a few Faber Castel Pitt Pastels. I'll see how they all work. Well done for 2 excellent drawings which both have different qualities.

It's been a great experience to try my familiar pencils on new paper and see what they can do!
The difference looks crazy. I think it looks like a photo on the Papermat! 😱
Nice work, Thanks for the video!
Velour definitely. I love it.
Never thought I'd say this as I've never had much success with velour but I think the velour was the best! Maybe I'll dig mine out from the back of the cupboard and give it another go😊
Give it a go, Sherry! I was truly surprised by what it offered...I have some big things planned with Velour paper now!

You can compete with pastelmat if you're after sharp details!
Thank you so much I struggled with papers till i fave up😊
I know the feeling! But it's good to be aware of how the more expensive papers can improve your drawing experience :)
Both were amazing!
I think I would still choose CF and Pitt, but might check the price on the velour and give it a go with cheaper pencils. I am a beginner and learning so why not.
Thank you for the video 😊
I think the Velour could be very cool for subjects where you have smooth textures...my creative mind is spinning with ideas!

Yes I do use an easel :) When I'm not filming I usually stand to draw. Try using a mahl still to rest your hand on and keep steady :)
Lovely drawing. Still prefer pastelmat, it has a brightness and luminosity
It really does! I will try the Velour with more suitable pencils to see how much 'umph' it can give

Pastelmat for me - detail and richness of colour.
It's still my firm fave ;)
Velour
Big fan of you , love from India ❤️ 🇮🇳, could you please upload step by step tutorials for a beginner to master advance techniques 😊
Patrol at is brighter, but velour has better detail. There both beautiful tho!
Thank you!
It's very difficult to remove pastels from valour, once down they stick. So pastelmat more flexible imo.

@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820 Okay, thanks for your advice, I kinda understand what you mean. Thanks 😊
I didnt watch the whole video but a hasty look ar the last comparison, I seem to like the one on the right more
Ah that’s why I thought velour paper wasn’t for me. I only have FC pencils! I think I marginally prefer the soft edges of the velour.
Yes! Amazing how the materials change on the surface. FC used to be the only brand for me…now not so much!
They both look beautiful and each paper has its +/- I do prefer the Pastel mat as I like to see more details.
Great job Emily on both versions. 🐾
Thanks Leslie! I'm excited to use the velour for very soft textures in the future :)
I made our cat on Velours with Pencils and sticks. About 6 months ago. Now the chalk falls off slowly. Very Bad. So I prefer pastelmat.
Sorry, meant pastelmat
I prefer PastelMat more details
Pastel mat is veel helder
its too bad pastelmat changed there formula the surface now has too much tooth
Velour
