WHAT IS LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS OR TENNIS ELBOW?
Lateral elbow pain (lateral epicondylitis or “tennis elbow”) is a common overuse injury that occurs in the arm. Ironically, I don’t see many people who actually developed the problem playing tennis! Typically any hobby or profession where lots of hand and arm use takes place (weightlifting, plumbers, carpenters, mechanics, etc) is the culprit.
All the muscles that extend your wrist and forearm actually originate on the outside part of your elbow. With overtraining or overuse these muscles can become fatigued and actually damage the tendon that attaches them to the outside of your elbow.
This “over-pulling” from these muscles can cause inflammation and even damage to the tendon that ties these muscles into the outside of your arm.
MODALITIES TO TREAT TENNIS ELBOW PAIN (3:00)
The first thing you should do when treating this problem is try to get inflammation under control. Anti-inflammatory measures include resting your elbow (NOT doing activities that aggravate it), ice (15 minutes, 2-3 times daily), compression, and anti-inflammatory medication.
These should be performed daily until pain subsides.
STRETCHES FOR TENNIS ELBOW
Stretching is another crucial component to help alleviate tension and pain in your elbow and forearm. Stretching should be performed daily in a range that causes a stretching sensation but not pain. The best stretches for lateral elbow pain include:
1. Wrist Extensor Stretch (5:00): Great at alleviating tension in the wrist extensors.
2. Wrist Flexor Stretch (5:41): Oftentimes when your wrist and finger flexors are too tight (common from gripping), they can pull on your wrist extensors and cause this lateral elbow pain. It’s important to stretch them out as well.
3. Lateral Epicondylitis Stretch (6:03): My personal favorite stretch for this condition as it adds forearm pronation to wrist flexion to enhance the stretch even further.
STRENGTHENING EXERCISES FOR TENNIS ELBOW
4. Active Range Of Motion (6:50): Gently move your wrist up and down against gravity resistance in a pain-free range. If this does elicit pain in your elbow you may need to just perform the modalities and stretches for another week or two.
5. Wrist Extensor Eccentrics (7:59): Eccentrics have been proven to be the best way to promote healing in a tendon. This can be performed with a dumbbell or resistance bands/loops.
6. Resisted Wrist Extension (9:48): The final step is to take your wrist joints and forearm musculature through full resisted extension - both pulling up and lowering down.
ONE MORE THOUGHT (10:32)
Typically elbow pain is a manifestation of some deficiency (lack of mobility or lack of strength) in your wrist or shoulder joint. In order to maximally treat your elbow with the best outcomes possible you should also address any deficiency in your shoulder and/or wrist as well.
There you have them! My best tips, advice, stretches and exercises to help alleviate your elbow pain and help you to feel better.

Have you had this elbow pain before? It's AWFUL! I would say stretch #3 and exercise #5 are my two favorites as they helped my elbow the most. Which are your favorites? Thanks so much for watching!
I just got this issue again for the second time. It's been in my non-dominant hand both times. I think I'm just lacking forearm strength in that arm. Thanks for the video!
hey ,if anyone else wants to uncover how do you cure tennis elbow try Freds Elbow Helper ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my work buddy got excellent success with it.
hi everyone ,if anyone else needs to find out about cure tennis elbow naturally try Pycanta Elbow Relief Protocol (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my brother in law got cool success with it.
Great video from a fellow physio
i have this for 1 month now, is it normal to get headaches as well? its consistent after i got this Epicondylitis/elbow outside pain
Im also a physiotherapist from South Africa. This is a great video man. Basics or rehab explained very well. No need to over complicate it, sweet and simple and it works!!!
Thanks so much, T Man! I am glad you see the value in these exercises!
Hello: actually do not work. I do these and similar exercises and nothing changed.
@@TheReverb1 because it doesn’t address the chain. These exercises don’t focus on what is deficient and causing the forearm extensors to be overloaded to create this tendinopathy. Unfortunately, this is par for the course in the physical therapy realm and it gives us a bad name.
Need to assess and address the shoulder, scapula, thoracic spine, etc. in order to really fix this. Doing what this video tells you to do will only possibly relieve it temporarily
@@jamescraven3457 Hi; now I have no pain there but I need to be constantly taking care and monitoring and as you mention about; I have the shoulder very damaged in need of surgery but doctors are avoiding, I do not have more the sub scapular muscle and the biceps tendon broken, They need to remove muscle from chest to implant there, Also I have a problem in the lumbar area of the spine due to a car hit me so not easy and basically I have my job and daily routines severely compromised.
Looks really helpful! I will try as much as I can to follow these steps to get rid of my elbow pain. I recently got this pain while working on my computer. My elbow was straight for a very long time.
I would also be needing advice on spondylitis and lower back pain.
i love the diagrams and breakdown of how and where the pain originates, this really helped me to diagnose my forearm/ elbow issue. I started rock climbing around 5 months ago and just recently started to get a dull annoying pain exactly where your talking about. after using these stretches/ exercises I've already noticed a significant improvement. Thanks!
You are welcome! I am so glad you found this video helpful and thanks for commenting!
Thank you for your video! I have been suffering from this similar description of pain after shoveling snow daily for a few weeks … already more than a month ago and still in a lot of pain.
Outstanding video. Not BS, straight to the points. This video is the merge of several other videos without play around with editing. For sure this is all you can do to minimize the pain.
Thanks so much, Robert! I am glad you found this helpful!
Thanks for tour very helpful and informative video!! I have bad tennis elbow....Should we do the stretches and exercises everyday?
I developed tennis elbow a couple years ago from framing houses. Lots of long hours and not realizing I was doing damage until it was too late. I have been living with the pain and off and on. I can’t even pickup a framing nailer without pain and when the weather changes, I feel pain and fatigue. These stretches really helped me. I am getting used to taking more care of my body. I don’t wish this pain on anyone. But just from the few exercises and stretches I’ve done, I can tell a small difference but it’s definitely an improvement which I’m going to incorporate in my morning routine. Thanks !
Tennis elbow is the shittiest. I have it because I drive a truck and the vibration up through the steering column and the constant moving of the steering wheel. After years and years of driving, my elbows have had it. Rest helps, but when it's your livelihood, it's hard to do. Use an elbow brace, that will help and also I take Naproxine, (A good quality anti-inflamitory and slow release pain relief). 2x in the morning and 1x at night before bed. Helps a great deal. They can irritate the linning of the stomack so I also take 1x Lansoprazole in the morning. Don't know what I would have done without them. Good luck at work. Naproxine are great.

Really well presented. Thanks a ton for posting these tips.
You are welcome, Synthalog! I hope these exercises help you!
This is clearly the best Tennis Elbow information on UA-cam. Ironically, I was already instinctively doing some of these exercises, so I can attest that it works. I did not know about the stretch specifically for the problem area, the one where you clasp your two hands together.
Thank you so much for sharing a bit of your knowledge with us. I have been ti doctors with this issue, and they never divulged what you did, awesome!!!
You are welcome! I am so glad you found this helpful!
Thank you and I love these exercises..
I love you for sharing them ❤️ ..doctors in India don't believe me when I say that I have a tennis elbow because of excessive writing and sitting all day.
I was suffering so much because of this pain but after doing these exercises for a few minutes I experienced a tingling sensation and resistance in that painful lateral epicondyle muscle ..but my wrist pain ( in ring pinky and middle) reduced slightly..
Thank you soooooooo much ! Now your channel is my go to ..for all the pains that I experience due to my sedentary lifestyle..
Great video. Your shoulder pain video helped me a lot. How would we know when to apply stretch vs strengthening exercises in this video? You gave us 7 stretches/exercises in the video should we do them all? Daily? Weekly? As needed for pain?
Straight to the point

Hi, its a very useful video. Good explanation. Please put a video on Golfer's elbow. Last 5 years I am suffering. I used to type a lot in my work.
Thanks.
Wow! Exercises 2, 3 and ESPECIALLY 4 ... RELIEF, for the first time in years. I'm a 66 year old sedentary woman, and developed the epicondylitis during some gruelling years of excessive overtime computing work (as a graphic designer, minute control of the computer mouse is vital - even if it sounds wierd!). Add to that my love of heavy tool gardening - an elbow injury just waiting to happen. So I'm hugely grateful for this video. Thank you!
Oh, I am so glad to hear this! You are very welcome!
The most helpful video ❤
Glad you think so!
Thanks Doc.

Excellent video. You showed all of the good stretches. I was a mechanic for 35 years. I developed bilateral epicondylitis during the last ten years of my career and was essentially taught how to do self-therapy. I also found wrist rollers (aka wrist blasters) and gyro balls to be helpful in maintaining strength.
Thanks so much! Glad you found it helpful!
very useful. Thanks a lot. Keep it up bro

Thank you so much.
You are welcome, Joyce! I hope these exercises help and thanks for commenting!
Solid video - will be doing more of these every day. PT is the way in many situations.
Quick question - I’ve had this going on for about 2-3 months and essentially just kept working out (5 days a week, weights). I’ve taken the last 2 weeks off but plan on starting back next week. Safe to continue lifting as long as I’m not in major pain? I haven’t had too many issues other than it flare up more after certain days (back / biceps).
Thanks 💪🏼
Thank You Very Much For This Video! The Stretches and Excercise Have Made My Pain Level Off and Seems To Be Working.... Thanks Again!!
You're so welcome! Wonderful to hear.
Really helpful and well explained video. Many thanks.
You are very welcome, Endo!
I've watched numerous videos about tennis elbow over the last few days and this is probably one of the best. Concise and to the point. No BS. The elbow in my left arm is pretty bad at the minute and I'm worried I'll have to quit the gym. The pain is throwing me off when I bench.
Thank you so much! I hope these exercises are helpful for you.
I ordered the ice brace wrap and grip strengthening tools you suggested, I'm really happy with them. Getting any kind of cold or hot therapy wrapped around an elbow without assistance is really difficult, this wrap was a great solution.
Oh, that's great! I am glad you found them helpful!
Thank you so much it's help me a lot
Happy to help!

Thanks so much, Robert! I am so glad you found this helpful!
😀😹
So helpful! Been playing drums for almost 30 years but I hurt my elbow by wrenching a trash bag closed. Oddly, drumming is still ok but it hurts to hold cups and grip other large things. Ordered the brace today, but the exercises are already helping!
I work with my hands a lot and drum. My elbow pain has gone from outside to now include inside (tennis and golf). I don't think it's weakness bit rather over use. I've had to stop playing due to not being able to hold on to the stick... hope this helps. Been almost a year.
@@michaelm2945 yes when it's tennis you will have problems holding a grip and the golf you will have problem griping something like you I have both also and at time I can't even open a door at all bc I can't make my hand actually close around the door handle it sucks
Thengs for sharing.
You bet, Peter! I hope it helps!
This is amazing! Thank you so much! Very helpful! And the balls bit is hilarious! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
