Today before I saw this video, i was actually emotionally depressed.. but by God's grace I was able to lift my thoughts to the Lord about the state i'm in right now but I kinda lost my focus on it.... then I saw my husband's short pants that it lost it's button and I looked for thread and needle and started mending it.. and in between putting it aside for a moment and doing something else, I then decided to search bishop Barron's podcast in youtube and I found this.. while listening and not really in full focus on it or perhaps bcoz it's too intellectual for me :), i then found myself finishing doing the sewing and then other chores ... and when Brandon asked Bishop Barron what practical advice he can give to somebody who is in the state of unhappiness right now which by that time caught my focus, bishop Barron answered to perform the simplest act of Love.. I just hope I can practice that way often.

@@topseykretts7608 He does care about our happiness, but holiness first and foremost about our holiness. Be very careful with how one states these things, or we risk reducing God to a spiritual drill instructor, not a loving Father. And we risk dissuading many from even trying to walk the path to sanctification.
Like a good Father, God does care about our happiness, but most of all about our long-term well-being, because eternity is much longer than our short lives. We also do not always know what is good for us, so sometimes we do not get what we want because it is or would not be good for us.
So above all, we must trust in our God and His plan for our lives. In that, we will find true contentment and our destiny.
If you make God seem aloof, cold or distant and unapproachable, then you are doing something wrong with how you are approaching Him. Perspective is important and there is a certain way to see that show's Who God is rather than Who we think He is. Remember that God us both Justice and Mercy, universal and personal and above all God is Love.
      God blesd you.

my fellow Sinners @The Archivist and @Topsey Kretts, i agree to both of your points..
The mission of the Church is to make us Holy, to be a Saint.. and a Saint has an intimate friendship with
this JEsus, who is our Lord and God..and that's a mind blowing reality of our faith journey..!
And if we think about those 12 very close friends of Jesus, they did have different personalities.
We are so much bless to know that there's a great diversity of Saints in our Church. And they are the heroes and heroines that we can look up to because of their great virtues perfected by God.
And we often hear the teaching of the church that there are different ways or paths to Holiness..
Most of us are attracted to soft personality but some of us would prefer a straight forward character..
I remember when I went to a confession a year ago, there's this priest that sounded so kind and gentle and the way he
consoled me I felt like God did poured on me His mercy and love.. And i remember going to this priest for confession for several times..And I pictured him as a gentle and patient Father.
And then again after few weeks, I said to myself I need to go to confession ..with same sin again!
For some reason the priest that I like was not there so I just went to an available confession box..
I then told this another priest of this sin that I kept doing, and I was perplexed of his kinda
loud and angry voice when he said to me, "..then Stop it.. you can stop it, right?! so just Stop it!"
I was dumbfounded for a few seconds :).. but after that confession and penance I was grateful to the Lord of that tough Love.
That angry voice was sound like of a Father who wanted to emphasize the destruction i'm heading if I didn't
do my best part to avoid that sin.
And whenever i am tempted to sin again, that voice rings in my ear!..
i just pray that I will always hear and heed to it :)
Also as St. Teresa of Avila prays, "Good Lord deliver us from sour-faced saints" :)

Our next project is to spend our meetings in October with Fallen Away Catholics who we have been inviting to our meetings, to answer their objections and questions. Reading Bishop Barron's book is a perfect preparation for this new endeavor. Thank You Bishop Barron. I want to comment on happiness as opposed to joy. Once I was hospitalized for extremely severe depression when I was unable to even give my name. BUT internally, I found a joy deep inside where I knew God was with me. So happy according to the "world" is going to be artificial as opposed to spiritual happy/joy.

I am an 80 year Army Special Forces Disabled Vet. I had two daughters with my wife (who died awhile back) my two daughters grew up in the drug 70s and 80s era. One daughter died from a drug overdose and the other finally got her life together and now is doing very well for herself. I was at the most a part time father. Vietnam etc. I have another wife now and two adopted children. Guess I have the idea I screwed up the first two so maybe the second time I could make up for it in some small way plus taking care of two children that would have nothing. So now I'm asking for prayers that my daughter will see the way to makeup with me or possible let me see her /my grandchildren. I will let the prayers God/Jesus decide what is best for me, my daughter and her children. I would really like to have a relationship with my family as I am 80 and don't have that much time left. thank you all for your prayers. God Bless I am Mustang Major Mike

Thank you for the advice Bishop. Also, performing an act of love seems to me deeply rooted in friendship. St Thomas More and Aquinas both say that true friendship was the best thing of this world. We get an image of this in fantasy in Lord of The Rings and the friendship of the fellowship. St Thomas More was said to be a the perfect example of friendship by his own friends.
So often our friends in life help us stay on track. I cant find it, but Thomas More even wrote a poem of two beggars, one blind and one lame. And how they needed eachother to navigate life. It's the reality of human limitation that invites us to friendship and without friends we are the blind man wandering in circles or the lame man unable to move forward.

Happiness is a state of being, not the flux of becoming. What you pursue, you may never have. What you have, you need not pursue. Contentment provides beyond needs and wants. It's the key to that equilibrium in temporal life. If you embrace God, you need not seek Him anymore. The restless spirit finds rest.

There is no stigma around suicide in Scandinavia, so they where simply accurately reported. Our hearts are incapable of loving God with the same magnitude as he loves us. The only thing we can do is ask for His Spirit to preside over us, for him to take our heart - and replace it with one like His (the Sacred Heart) - one that is capable of loving like Him on that next and higher plain. To be *under the influence* of _the Holy Spirit_ - filled with that Fire may we all become part of the Light of the World.

    Bishop Barron,
I have been catholic all my life but not a practical until a few years ago. I listen to your podcast and I’m impressed by most of your explanations of catholic traditions. Specially the doctrine of the Eucharist, which is the summit of catholic faith. I’m quite concern about the resent Pew research or survey about the Eucharist . The reverence toward the Eucharist has been lost and I believe it has been so since Vatican II. I have a feeling that it will get much worse
Given the encyclicals that Pope Francis has given us in the recent past, such as marriage and Catholics that are remarried without annulment...
The amazon synods is upon us . A lot of the point and changes for the church that the synod will address are HERETICAL and contrary to the tradition of the Catholic Church.
I want to know what is your take on the upcoming synod? Why the request of the “Immaculate Conception “are not followed. Fatima is not even mention at mass. The request of Our Lady to pray the rosary is not mention as an emergent necessity is not even acknowledged. Most Catholics are oblivious to what’s going on. I fear of offending Jesus more than we already have. You as bishop have the power to effect a positive change in conjunction with the other bishops. If the synod gets what they want to change the Catholic Church will be nothing more than another Protestant denomination. For certain chastisement will ensue.
    Thank you

Bishop Barron, I would suggest you create more videos of 7-10 mins duration, I believe that's more effective for evangelization than this 30 mins more interview type video. I personally and many of my friends value more the short videos than these long interviews because they are direct, rich and thought provoking. Thanks!

I guess the videos that appear on this Channel are ministerial and may aim at serving one and all. Also, since the Topics are varied it mayn't be that a fixed duration can be worked out. The Channel is very regular in posting short duration videos, those that could possibly fit in shorter duration.
I have seen commenters expressing their appreciation of these LONGER podcasts. Personally I value both the kinds equally

Thank you for another insightful video, Bishop Barron. I think there is a problem when we conflate the physical sensual happiness mentioned with the absence of abject misery. What he doesn't address here is that the Nordic countries are happier in total because they have less abject misery than other countries, due to robust social supports. This is surely a good Christian goal and should be celebrated as such. As Nye Bevan said about the UK's National Health Service: "It's the most socialist thing we ever did, but it's also the most Christian thing we ever did"

I am Swedish living in Norway. I think that one problem with such an investigation of “are you happy?” Is that it has many sides to it. It’s first of all a subjective statement. What does it mean to be happy? Perhaps a lot of people mean to say they are grateful for living in a secure society. It is a fundamental ground stone to experience the fruits of a free healthcare system - knowing people can have there bones and teeth mended. And food on their table. To be aware of the neighbors safety means something, so I believe a lot of what’s behind the Scandinavian citizens happiness is their basic feeling of safety. But then there is also another perspective: it’s shameful not to be happy so people answer as they believe they aught to be to try and fit in. Happy? Yes....? Perhaps the question should be addressed in a different way: do you feel fulfilled with your life? Do you feel your life has a meaning? Or something like that.
I am proud to pay high taxes in order to share the social benefits. I truly wish more of my people would have faith and live a life following Christ.

Note: Below are my musings and nothing more. If you find issue in them, please do inform me. If issue from them, discard the words, they are not worth your soul.
"Seek ye first the Kingdom of God." In other words, making God king of your heart and your life. Giving Him dominion over you.
For we are human beings, being is our central nature, being made in the image and likeness of God, so one's soul is one's existence, one's act of "to be" it thus surrounds the body, mind and spirit, as it is the sum total of one's existence. Thus God, Who's nature is His existence and Who is the self-subsistent base of all existence, must be King and rule over us to have our lives rightly ordered and us rightly ordered. As the soul is our connection to God and yearns to look like what it was made to reflect.

I would like to say something for Danish Scandinavians. My father was born in Denmark. As a child I remember the letters he got from his family in Denmark during WW2. When the Germans occupied Denmark they went after the Jews in order to arrest and get rid of them. Just about everyone including the Royal Family wore the Star of David. This frustrated the Nazis greatly. Many Danish people gave their lives to rescue the Jews. The smallest proportion of the population of Danish Jews were imprisoned and killed than any other occupied European country. That sounds more like pure love than the Catholic countries of Europe displayed. I was in Denmark sin 1989. Perhaps things have changed since then but the people went out of their way to be welcoming and helpful. They were truly joyful then. I am a devout Catholic and very happy. I am not sure which aspect of my person my Danishness or Catholic faith contributed most to this joy. Kierkegaard was Danish too! I just feel sad when especially militant Catholics find susceptible joy I’d dissing Scandinavians. You are usually so good. But the Church Militant anti Pope Francis Catholic’s are their own worst enemies if they truly want to win people over to Christ. It’s all about love not so much about being Right.

Yes, the Beatitudes or Sermon on the Mount which begins in such word as "Blessed" or "Happy" like "Blessed or Happy are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." is our source of living a happy life. There are 8 of them and these come from Jesus Christ in his Sermon on the Mount. But why and how one can find happiness in these Beatitudes. The underlying message in the Beatitudes is first in the word "Blessed" then comes "Happiness". When a person applies and lives their life like what the Beatitudes say, one's life is blest with material comfort - stable good-paying job, healthy and smart children, loving and caring relationship with the others, successful in business, etc.... In these blessings, we then find happiness. Not only are the Beatitudes that makes us find happiness; but living life by doing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy also makes one live a blissful and happy life.

Be happy depends if i receive to God in my heart, in my soul, in my mind, in all of me. We are the blessed. Recognized these is open your heart and all of you to God. He already love us. We denied this when think close in our owns world. And pray to God is an answer to his love. Pray first for our hearts then God talk. While you think take all from other not from yourself for God. He can't help you, cause your heart it's close. Everyone have gifts than can't imagine if pray with love and sacrifice to God. So can open everyone their owns treasures not for a momentos if don't for ever. What are you waiting? Try to open your own treasures, still waiting for you, just leave the old man and dress the new man born with the gift from heaven and you will be happy ever not for a price just for your heart opening to God. And it's necesary go to the Church. A point that you can't forget it's that this gift still with you to the heaven where you are. So your work give fruit s. You can't close wich is not yours. Don't lose your present everyone have one from God. Don't be scare to be in the face from God and search with your self your treasures, then you can show your own 😇😇😇

« Seek first the kingdom of God » Here is what I get from this brilliant exchange: Happiness stems not from a mathematically balanced distribution of the physical, intellectual and spiritual but more from the positioning of three verbs: Be, Have and Do. Should I first seek to Have in order to Do so that I can Be, I live from an equation where my beingness stems from what I possess and my main life activity. If I first seek to Do whatever in order to Have whatever so that I may Be whatever comes out of this equation, again my beingness at its core stems from from the result of I do and its suant , my possessions. If I first seek to Be at my very core that which God is calling of me to be, then my Doing will stem from the unicity of who I am in God’s eyes and reveal with it a beauty that is Tov. The resulting « havings » will be perfectly suited for me to become fully the perfection of beingness I am meant to be as a gift to humanity.....something like that.

Bishop Barron (whom I wholeheartedly admire) is of course completely right, from a deep philosophical and theological point of view. However, I wouldn't dismiss as trivial the higher level of reported "happiness" in Scandinavia (and also Canada, where I live!), and would argue that it is a direct consequence of having a political and cultural environment where the virtue of charity (even if outwardly secularized) is taken more seriously via concrete social welfare policies. It saddens me that a highly developed and strongly religious country like the US is unable to come together to address profound societal evils like gun proliferation and violence against Black people. Of course, no country is perfect, but something is clearly awry in a country where mass shootings occur every other week, and I would hope that US religious leaders would speak up more often against such evils. Anyway, sorry for the rant! Thank you, Bishop Barron (and Brandon), for proclaiming Christ to the culture so eloquently in all your work.
