  • What's actually happening when we pray? In this episode, I answer the deepest questions about prayer-not necessarily how to pray, but what is prayer? A listener asks about the Rosary prayer and how it operates.

    Bishop Barron, I started praying the Rosary about two years ago. I pray it every day, sometimes twice a day. We have a local Relevant Radio station that prays it at the usual time I drive to and from work, and I pray it with them. I think that I have found that when we pray, the words themselves don't matter nearly as much as the heart does. If we truly want to let God change us (even when it feels like the ripping and tearing of guarded habits and understandings of long custom), it is in prayer that the change begins. We are told that the Spirit 'intercedes for us with groans that cannot be uttered,' and so most of the time my prayers will be wrong until God himself puts them right. Praying is the point. Giving oneself to God is the point. So I pray the Rosary, the _Suscipe,_ and the _Anima Christi_ regularly. God is in those prayers because in them I am in Christ.
    And I'm not even Catholic, but I appreciate, even admire, the various Catholic spiritualities that are deeper than mine and from whom I can learn much.
    Thank you, Bishop, for being an encouragement and a guide to some who do not share your label, but who would very much want to live your life. The Catholic Church is still a beacon.

      Which NT leader told you to pray to Mary? Did Jesus? No. Paul? No. John? No. Peter?

    • @mensetens6391
      @mensetens6391 5 років тому +1

      @@timspangler2154 Then explain the positive effects: I know Jesus better, follow God with increased devotion, am more of an evangelist now than I was, read the Bible more than I did, am less judgmental, more loving, and more self-sacrificial than I was before, and have seen more miracles happen than I did before.
      Interestingly, we don't bat an eye at someone calling himself 'Reformed' or 'Lutheran' or 'Pentecostal', but as soon as someone asks Mary to pray to Jesus for him, suddenly we ask, 'Where is that in the Bible?' Don't you find that just a bit odd?

      @@timspangler2154 Thank you, Tim. I hope that you are doing so, as well. Probably for me the most important lesson of the Rosary is that the Spirit *must* pray my prayers with and for me, because I get them wrong, and the Spirit *will* pray my prayers for me because God is love. Once I thought like the garden-variety evangelical (because I was one), that my words had to be right. I didn't know just how much God loves me. I probably still don't, but I think I know it a bit more, for the Rosary is very different from my prayers before, yet, like the Jerusalem Council who heard of the Greeks accepting Christ without first becoming Jews and so decided that circumcision was not necessary, the increase in my spiritual life, my witness, my discipline, and my trust in God has told me that I had misjudged the Rosary for many years. As long as I pray, the Spirit will pray with and for me, and my prayers will be effective, especially in changing me. The Rosary is a long-tested way of doing this, and because it points me to God and to Christ, it works in me.
      I could only find this out by trusting God and trying it for myself. I gave it two years; I continue on with it. There is light here.

    I have such ADD when I try to quiet my mind in adoration, it's torture. So I can only do the quiet just adoring part in short bursts. Instead I always start my hour with the rosary prayed slowly and that's when I pray my petitions for everyone, then I can just adore for a few minutes, then I bring some kind of theological reading with me and I read that for a while, slowly and trying to really absorb it, then another burst of adoration and then I pray the office for whatever time of the day is I happen to be in Adoration. By the end I've quieted down and I can adore a little bit more. Then the hour's over. It's amazingly peace-giving. Even if I probably don't do it in the best way! I have to have a ton of structure to focus well.

    I had been having this disturbing thought every night before I went to sleep and had tried all sorts of mind games to try and shake it off, nothing seemed to work, and then I started praying old school every night before I go to sleep I pray; 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be, and really concentrating on the words that I was praying and if I felt I hadn't concentrated enough or said them to fast I would say all three over, two weeks later I don't have that disturbing thought anymore, also things seem to fall in place all around me now, things are just slightly easier, grease in the gears, I can't scientifically explain it but there has been a very noticeable difference for the better, I just feel better...just saying

    QUESTION/COMMENT. Regarding prayer. I personally feel that prayer is more a relational (relationship w Our Lord). Just as we have a relationship with our spouses, the spousal relationship of my soul with the spouse of my soul. I perceive prayer where at times is listening and sharing ; at times, just in silence enjoying the Presence; times requesting help; doing things together. I perceive prayer where as “celebrating and acknowledging His Presence “, in all I do, constantly visiting and talking, or just recognizing His Presence.
    To me saying praying is just a period of our time or a thing we do, it limits the profound immensity of what prayer should be. Just as if, I said my relationship w my souse is when, I do this or when, .... I truly saying prayers, Adoration, Mass, it’s only the entrance to the awareness in my day , life of His Presence, the beginning not the end. His invitation to walk with Him and He with me, ..... in all I do
    in Him with Him for Him and through Him... . Again it’s a celebration of His Presence in my life , again is a relationship. That includes all that we call prayer and beyond. Bishop Barrón, am I extrapolating the meaning of prayer? However, I must admit that from my heart I see it as above mentioned.

    So helpful to listen to this interview focusing on prayer. Question: could you explain the term metaphysical? What would you contrast metaphysical with? Larry Gamboa from Manila Philippines

    • @jaxsun1555
      @jaxsun1555 3 роки тому

      Hi, Larry. There are many definitions for metaphysical (an adjective). The most common, not the most accurate, is that metaphysics (a noun) is an abstract idea. Abstract idea is a general definition that actually belongs to the term philosophy.
      A far more specific definition for metaphysics comes from the Greek language studied by Plato. Meta in Greek means beyond. So, metaphysics is the realm beyond the physical.
      Since humans reside in the physical realm (a world of matter), we must rely on our imagination to grasp the metaphysical. Thru our imagination, we can imagine a unique realm beyond the material world.
      Most people imagine a realm of the spirit.
      Hence, one definition of metaphysical is the realm beyond the physical world that is called the spirit.

    I'm still not sure I understand. If prayer isn't ever going to move God to do something, then why pray for anyone else? If this is true, would praying for someone else who is sick or suffering have any effect? Or why even pray for ourselves for our own sickness or troubles to be fixed, if God isn't going to do anything in response. This also seems in direct contradiction with Gospel verses that says "Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven". Can someone please clarify this?

    Praying the Daily Holy Rosary puts us on a cushion of Heaven, it provides us with all that what we truly need, the Heavenly Embrace of Jesus, St. Mary and all the Heavenly Host, the Divine Love and Mercy of God through this prayerful communion with the Holy Trinity. Of course, that is assuming that we're in a state of grace (which means not living in a state of mortal sin) and regularly going to Holy Mass and receiving the Sacraments of the Catholic Church. God, through the messages of Our Lady of Fatima, asks us to pray the rosary every day for peace in our world and for the conversion of sinners. Fatima means peace and this is God's Peace Plan! Praise God and Our Lady, our Heavenly Mother, for the Gift and Miracle of the Rosary! Praying the daily Holy Rosary with our family or praying it at Church earns us a Plenary Indulgence which means that we get A Full Tank of God's Grace, so it puts us on a cushion of Heaven, a timeless cloud of Divine Love and Mercy, the Heavenly Embrace of Jesus, St. Mary and all the Heavenly Host! Thanks for the elucidation, but it could still be feminized just as easily as masculinized. The young priest's idea to take away the gendered pronouns may have been a problem in the way you describe, but that doesn't mean there isn't a problem to begin with which he was trying to address generically as best he could in his fallen state.

    We don’t ask our dead friends to pray for us, we ask our living friends. Two reasons not to pray to Mary. 1. The Bible says there is only one mediator to the Father and that is through His Son, Jesus Christ . 2. We shouldn’t be asking Mary to pray for us because she is physically dead. Only God can hear all our prayers as only He is omnipresent and omnipotent might as well pray to a tree.

    A metaphor which I really like for intercessory prayer is that of a lens held up to the sunlight. A lens in daylight doesn't change the sun, but yet it does change the interaction of the sun with the world; secondary causation means that we don't change God, but we change the world's relationship to God through prayer. (There's also a curious metaphor in there for sin in holding up something which casts a shadow-which like sin looks like it has a shape and therefore a substance, but doesn't.)

    I'm still unclear on what happens in petitionary prayer, particularly when we ask someone to pray for us or a third party. When A asks B to pray for C ("Father, my Mom's in the hospital, could you say a prayer for her?"), what's the proper understanding of what's going on there? Assume B doesn't know and will never meet C. It's not that A is hoping B's prayer will change the outcome--they both believe God will do what's best whether they ask for it or not. What, then, are they hoping for?

We practiced Catholicism for a couple years, but after that he said he wanted us to join another church, not the church of his origin, but another church and I said that’s fine we’ll do that. And it was great, but now he has said that he is not so interested in continuing going to church with me, so I decided to join the Catholic faith again. And it has been wonderful. When we pray to God we are recognizing His Omniscience, HIs Omnipresence and His Omnipotence. Prayer is an act of Faith in the Truth of God's being. Bishop Baron tells us to pray to Mary is the same as asking our friends to pray for us, human to human. Why then are we constantly instructed to pray the Rosary, and told it is the prayer God most wants to hear? It is not even addressed to Him. I don't believe this.

      Also, I think I have a better understand of the catholic idea of praying to the saints now. Maybe prayer isn't necessarily a form of worship, but a ways of communicating to those who are in heaven? So you dont worship any saint, but more revere them like we would a marine, and so they are trustworthy to prayer on your behalf. If that's the case could we actually pray to send a message to a deceased relative? (Not that i'm trying to). I recently learned that the eastern orthodox view is that the dead are still a part of the church, so that would potentially make sense in their view as well (but i'm not 100% sure). Lastly, the warning that I've heard about praying to the saints is that they are like an integration of pagan gods into the church, since they often represent certain attributes of life.

    What about praying for God to save a loved one's life, which can be a one-time-event with a deadline? If I ask "God, please help my grandma get over this surgery and givi her back to us", isn't it a different matter? Will He refuse me because I'm not ready? When I'll be ready maybe she won't be alive anymore. Gosh, catolicism with its classical theistic, aristotelian-thomistic God is really depressing. The God of the Bible seems to change His mind repeatedly, He seems to prefer bold prayer, insistence. To that God I pray.

    I'm a big fan of Bishop Barron and tend to agree with much of his thought but empathetically disagree with him on this topic. For me, the notion of an unchanged Prime Mover posited by Aristotle/Aquinas who is not affected by prayer creates a mental construct of a God that is detached and uninvolved in his/her creation.
    Frankly, there couldn't be anything further from the truth if we believe that "God is Love" (1 John 4:8). If we truly love something, we will ALWAYS be affected by that thing. There is no other way TO love. Love is risky, it leaps into the unknown with no certainty of receiving love back. Love longs to feel loved by those he/she loves but will continue to love regardless of whether or not it's reciprocated (think of a parent's love for their child).
    For me, prayer is more than just words/requests to an unchanging God. Rather it's more like an ongoing/blossoming relationship between two people who deeply love each other. It's a sharing of words, actions, silence, intent, vision between relational beings who are DEEPLY affected by one another and who will, if they continue to take the risk, grow deeper in love with the other over time.
    Unlike us though, God is always willing/ready to take that risk.
