Elaine Paige: Memory - Olivier Awards, 1981

The 1981 Society of West End Theatre Awards were held celebrating excellence in West End theatre by the Society of West End Theatre. The awards would not become the Laurence Olivier Awards, as they are known today, until the 1984 ceremony.

A fantastic performance! I’m surprised Elaine sang at the Oliviers that year though, as she was not nominated for an award for this role. Was this because Grizabella is a featured role, rather than a lead (and Elaine didn’t want to be viewed as ‘featured’ after all of her success with Evita) or was it she was just not nominated by the panel? Either way, she gave a great performance here.
