I saw Elaine Page perform this in sept 1981. She was brilliant in the show. And that is what many comment on here seem to forget. She is a musical theatre actress and not just a singer like most of the others that performed it!
Elaine Paige is such a wonderful vocalist and performer. Memory and Don't Cry for Me Argentina are such beautiful songs. She does them so beautifully. I am moved every time I hear her sing them. Betty the Poet
I'm argentinian. This song is based on last Eva Peron's speech. She knew she was ill (cancer) and It's saying goodbye to crowd...A few days later, she died.
I love this song, it touches my heart from the very beginning when I first heard it, it doesn't matter what country you came from if you understand what the lyrics meant.. it's a beautiful song
Have become a big fan of Ms Paige through the generosity of the many people who have uploaded so many of her performances. For that, all I can say is "Thank you."
wow.....my mom gave me good taste in music. She always sang in the kitchen when I was young. She passed away from pancreatic cancer on the day this was published. 02/08/2008. It's 03/31/2019. Her birthday was 3 days ago. I miss her so much.
I am so happy for you, Kathy Roach, that your Mom shared the best of music with you, and know that it will remain in your heart. And I am so sorry and offer my condolences and sympathies to you for the loss of your mother :'( in 2008 and that her life was taken away by the menacing Pancreatic cancer the day this video was published. Very sad and odd.* Though, somehow, in some way, I feel your mother may have seen this video (within 'Heaven's' time) for she knew how much this meant to you. Her spirit felt it---and she smiled. May peace surround you by her memories. Blessings to you and your mother and I wish you could be celebrating her birthday as she continues to listen to music in Heaven. My best wishes to you, Kathy. ~ Sherri I also have another 'personal' note* I'd like to share with you and will come back to write it. ALSO: PLEASE look at this video and listen to Nicole Scherzinger singing 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina'. Nicole's version of this song is the best if ever heard. She's MAGNIFICENT! She emotes feelings that really touch me with her embrace if the the words and her powerful voice. I know you will enjoy it! :-) ua-cam.com/video/NuttvUdcMds/v-deo.html
One of the most impressive interpretations of the song. Ms. Page is a tremendously gifted actress and singer and this is my favorite rendition of Don't Cry...
By far the best rendition of this powerful song... I saw Elaine in the original stage production of Evita and boy was it good... A perfect cast with David Essex and Joss Akland. A night so perfect and one i shall never forget.... .
Notice how she never looks at her feet as she's descending the stairs, never breaking her steely gaze toward her audience. That took practice! She is so smooth.
Elaine Paige have got such a unique vocal that no one can come close to her talent. Which I can sing like her, such a beautiful voice, soft and dreami , like a lorabi you sing to your child.. trust in her voice 😇
Elaine adds an amazing presence to any song she does. There isn't any training that can give one this gift. You either have it or not and she definately has it!
No one in the world can compare with Elaine Paige's vocal and emotional dramatic ability. Her talent in singing and acting is magnificent and incomparable. That's the reason she's The First Lady of British Musical Theatre. She's a Legend and simply the best! BRAVO, ELAINE!!!
What a superb joy to see and hear this artist ! I am drying my eyes now, as I recall my wife and I seeing Elaine Paige do this live aboard a top of the line cruise ship about six years ago. I wish I could share this moment with her again today !
The True Grand Dame of the musical art form. Ms PROFESSIONAL, Elaine Paige, the standard against which all other female vocalists are measured . and rightly so. I love this woman's voice. right from the belly, not her throat.
lol..so completely wrong.....there are many many finer voices and women who would be considered the grande dame..ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU DONT EVEN KNOW THE CORRECT TERM....PAIGE IS certainly not THE VOICE OTHER FEMALE VOCALISTS ARE MEASURED AGAINST.....LOL..GROW UP BEFORE YOU YAP
God! I love this song and the story it tells. I haven't heard an artist sing this dong that I didn't like. It is such a heartfelt song that stirs the emotions about a real person.
It helps that Andrew Lloyd Webber did write this with Ms.Paige's voice in mind, she was "Evita" in the original performances of the musical. But, damn, if I was a poor worker in Argentina listening to this voice sing this song, I think I would do anything she asked. Her ability to put emotion into her performances is amazing.
I remember that moment of my childhood when i heard the new Eva Peron had die, and this song starts in a Spanish version (the original one) so I felt in love with it. But sounds so delicious with Elaine Paige, someone that I knew thank to Susan Boyle. Greets from El Salvador - UA-cam is the only source for us to know about these artists, thanks.
The first lady of West End Musial Theatre in London England played the original Evita. Here, the one and only Elaine Paige did not disappoint, She is brilliant!
I just remembered a really great music teacher I had in high school, we rehearsed this song with her. I skipped the class once and instead of reporting it she asked me where I had been. I told her I had to go buy the new Nirvana album (In Utero) as soon as it came out that morning and she said that was a good reason. Since she respected our choices in music, she taught me that a passion for music goes way further than your preferred style

Very lovely. I also had not heard of her until they rolled their eyes when Susan Boyle said she wanted to sing like her. Thanks Susan for introducing us to this pretty voice.

Yessssss!!! its true
I still loved Madonnas very emotional rendition. She portrayed the vulnerable woman Evita really was.
there isnt one song she cant handle!!what a talent ==thanks elaine for keeping me interested in these kinds of songs!!!!!
I'm argentinian. This song is based on last Eva Peron's speech. She knew she was ill (cancer) and It's saying goodbye to crowd...A few days later, she died.
i’m also argentinian and not many people know this story i love how their reaction to this song changes when i tell them
Yeah but within the show, she sings this after Perón is elected.
thanx for sharing...sad, just sad
I love this song, it touches my heart from the very beginning when I first heard it, it doesn't matter what country you came from if you understand what the lyrics meant.. it's a beautiful song
Thanks, Never realized that it was part of a speech. I always assumed someone got bits and pieces of her life and put this together.
Best version of this song, Elaine is such a thoughtful performer, she was great with everything she sang that night!
I love the whole performance, but what I love the most is the way she moves her hands at the end, like following the music... Simply brilliant
Perfectly voice and expression. Feeling is most most important when singing compared to others. Gorgeous and unbelievable!
I have no words that can possibly , ever, do this song with that most magically mesmerizing voices....Justice.

One of the most impressive interpretations of the song. Ms. Page is a tremendously gifted actress and singer and this is my favorite rendition of Don't Cry...
Kathryn Wyant : Try listening to and watching Nicole Scherzinger’s version. She’s set the bar on this.
Julie Covington for me.
She's fantastic, but listen to Nicole Scherzingers version.
30 years later this still is such a moving song and the best performance by the best voice

Unique in her special way ------ Telling a story while looking at you. A beautiful lady, Loved by many.

Incredible Work of Art. Brava, Elaine Paige!!!

how beautifully sings ... Elaine Paige!
Bravo! She has such control
Elaine's voice at 1st note tugs at my heart and my throat constricts with a sob. She's such a treasure... a gift to all of us.

Loving all the great comments about Elaine on here she is amazing and my 3rd cousin and i'm very proud of her! x
Beautiful voice!!!

Just f-ing killing it!! Wow!!
Awesome, the best ever rendition!
Such a beautiful talented Lady!
Sorry - but neither Madonna nor Olivia Newton John can hold a candle to Elaine Paige. Has to be one of the greatest show singers ever.
Yet oddly enough, much maligned for her Pop music Nicole Scherzinger did it some serious justice and added a tone of hope and spirit into it others never came close to achieving. While I grew up hearing and adoring Elaine rip this one out in epic style. Only modern version I have heard come close; is Nicole's version.

Excellent points.
For me, it is the pathos in Paige's renditions that give her the edge.
Same with her version of "Memory."
Lea Salonga also made a good rendition of the song.
Karen carpenter Very best
Madonna n Olivia r more commercial voices, while Elaine page n Susan Boyle r truly classical theatre voices from above!
beautiful voice ❤
Love Elaine Paige in anything, her voice is ultimate!
So beautiful!!
I’ve listened to all the versions now. This one is my favorite.
