- Stardate 1017.4, the Federation Starship USS Valiant rescues 135 colonists from a Federation outpost only to discover that they have all been stricken with an alien disease and to make matters worse, the medical staff on the Valiant have no antidote to the sickness. Working overtime, Chief Medical Officer Roger Floyd grows attached to the last two remaining children from the colony as he feverishly searches for a cure. Emotionally distraught, he wonders if he fails, will he have the strength to carry on? Taking place several years before the events of Legacy, Crosses to Bear tells the tale of a pivitol event in the life of Roger Floyd.
"Crosses to Bear," is the second short-story from the Starship Valiant Universe and features an exceptional cast of actors and actresses, all from Oklahoma with the exception of one. The film was written, produced and directed by Michael L. King, who also wrote and produced the first story. Crosses is a heartfelt attempt at presenting the pains of terminal sickness in children, while showing that those afflicted have dreams and aspirations of being more than what they are. Yes the illnesses take center stage but the persons afflicted do not have too.
Put together by a host of trek fans including Superfan Glen Wolfe, who supplied all the films medical props, Scott Johnson's lighting expertise, Dan Reynold's expert photography and editing, Craig Frey's subtle but excellent visual effects, Crosses to Bear is a labor of love for everyone involved. A "small" fan film with a big heartfelt story.

Magnificent... touching & thoughtful. I have long wished more S-T episodes would be more people-focused than "Blow Stuff Up!" This one succeeded wonderfully. Thank you.
Thank you very much for the kind words.
“I’ve seen a lot of death and every one has taken a piece of me with it”…..AMAZING and Powerful…..mad respect…
I'm only going off of this one episode, but if not the entire series this episide alone deserves an award
The opening credits on this are the best I have ever seen. Absolutely gorgeous. They really capture the essence of why we love Star Trek so much. Well done to all concerned.
I cant express just how honored and proud i am to be a part of this
amazing project , to meet so many talented people who share my love of
the dream Mr Roddenberry gave to us, and have a chance to play a role as
Doctor Floyd. thank you so much michael for the opportunity to
make a lifelong dream come true.
This is a story that explores the true depth of the human experience. Regrets and loss. To put into a Star Trek context is amazing. It shows that the more we explore the unknown the more we discover ourselves and perhaps our fundamental values.
that was the most beautiful and sad star trek episode I have ever watched. God Bless
Fans keep making better Star Trek. They just do. This isn't just heartfelt, it's also heartrending.
Wow, all I can say is wow. This episode shows the side of life that those of us that have served on a ship can all empathize with. Coping with loss is never easy. Even with all of the miracles of modern medicine, there are just some patients a Doctor can't save. This episode truly brings out the human side of Science Fiction and shows a side of Star Trek rarely ever shown in the big budget studio shows. Thank you for this. It goes to show that Valiant productions, just like other fan based shows are in it for a great story, not a great amount of money.
Indeed I agreed This fan film has stated a proof in its message that with all our advancements in the field of medical even all the greatest advancements are often bound to fail.
This is a very moving story years ago I was a medic in the Army and had to treat sick children at a refugee camp.Well done very well done so moving brought back some real life memories for me.
Wowwwww!!!! This is very deep!!! Never saw this in a Trek production before. This does go beyond anything they have depicted on shows
No, it doesn't.
It's a great fan film, but saying Star Trek itself was never this deep is the picture of ignorance.
to this day i still feel every emotion from the great writing of this script and still it brings tears to my eyes to watch it again...David Cox
Nicely done. A story where there is no happy ending is a brave one to tell.
I'm a big Star Trek fan. This is an amazing film and I caught myself tearing up with the death scene of the little girls.
Beautiful episode, Star Trek at its truest form, thank you all for this precious gift given to me
Simply stunning. Such pathos is hard enough to achieve in regular drama.
What an unbelievable job, thank you so much.
Thank you Mr. Ralph.
You're very welcomed Sir. Just always please know that all of the incredible time & effort you & every single one of your Counterparts put into these Projects is truly, truly appreciated. Never should you ever think in your mind that its a waste of Effort, Time or Energy.
Your hard & exhausting work brings great joy & can even bring greater understanding & thought into all of our lives. I have learned from watching these great works of Time & Effort. What greater Gift can someone give you if they can help you to live a more meaningful existence through lessons or teachings? That's a priceless Gift. Thank you again for those sacrifices you & everyone make in all of your hard work.
May every single one of you all Live Long & Prosperous Lives Sir.
That was one of the saddest things I've seen in Star Trek. But it illustrates that we are *NOT* Gods. There are just some things we can't do. And I've never thought doctors accept death more easily. They learn to control their reaction to it, but they feel just as deeply as anyone else. Otherwise they wouldn't fight it so hard, I'm sure there are some who accept death more easily, but those doctors have lost their way and their purpose.
This was good work. Thanks so much for sharing.
You re very welcome Kelly. Thank you so much for your wonderful comments and taking the time to watch.
A very touching, human story; perfect Star Trek! However, it doesn't stop there. The CGI visuals are beautiful throughout and often very well thought out to: For example, just after the deaths, the ship appears darkened (as if in mourning) yet this is not just due to "magic space lighting", but because the vessel is in nightside orbit of a planet. Real care and attention, even there.
The LONG opening shot utilises sickbay in a way we haven't seen before. In fact, the camera work is creative and spectacular throughout. The actors are all spot on - I totally bought into their pain and story. Even the child actors - where did you find children that could act so well?
And finally - Frank Jenks (although the southern accent is sadly absent) bears a definite resemblance to a young Deforest Kelly - good choice!
All in all an absolute sterling production, and I look forward to more.
Thank you, Starship Valiant.
One of the best made fan films i have seen, great story, production and acting, great casting and really gave the feeling of watching the old series.
Thank you Ian, that is very nice of you to say.
@@StarshipValiant Your welcome Michael
This was very impressive and also hit me really hard. I lost my little sister in 2017 due to illness and that scene with the older child promising to take of the younger reminded me of the same promise I made to her, and the same thoughts I had after she passed.
We are so sorry for your loss and please accept our deepest condolences.
i am sorry for your loss...it was hard to do my lines as the writing touched deep in my heart
i am david cox aka doctor floyd
excellent episode! I'd be a happier trek fan if Paramount would pull their heads out of their asses and let people like you take the creative process to the big screen. You guys are what Roddenberry dreamed the series should be. Please keep up the excellent work!
Anyways I also read that Paramount and Paramount+ Had a Licensing issue with some of the various trek movies and shows if this level of incompetence keeps up then Paramount+ and Paramount themselves may have no choice and mabey even CBS too may have no choice but to turn to fan film based talant like this
This is so beautifully done!!! Way to go guys. Look it great David!!! Way to make me feel feels and such.
"bows" glad to make you feel feels , sis ;)
Touching. My favorite things about good science fiction is that it can take us into a world that might be. It takes us into a future that we might at least partially create. But it is not about other worlds or other times. Good science fiction has the ability to sweep away frivolous things and is a human story about the time in which it is written.
Thank you sir and we wholeheartedly agree. Science fiction has always been about the human condition to us.
I can't help but notice that after the opening credits, the other bed had flat vital signs when the Doctor was working.
This could have taken place anywhere on Earth, but instead it was on the USS Valiant. Which just shows how good the acting is and the well made script that they followed. It was worth watching just because of the acting.
Excellent story and special effects. I enjoyed very much. Looking forward to the next!
I just discovered this channel. The acting reached out and grabbed my heart. Thank you so much.
Thank you for watching kind sir. We appreciate it.
@@StarshipValiant Hi. I just wanted to say, of all the star trek fan series that I've seen, the music for your opening score, is the most beautiful I've heard.
Simply beautiful.
@@lesliesmith1797 Thank you so much.
Kudos goes to you to doing stuff like this and making that dream a reality!
Well done...
There is nothing more tragic than the death of a child.🏆🏆🏆 for tackling this subject. Boldly go.....
well done!
An excellent short film. I work as a paramedic, and this took me back to the first child I saw die, a 3 year old. I could feel the pain of the doctor. It was especially wonderful to see a young Bones, before he became the Enterprise medical doctor. Very well written, Keep up the good work.
GREAT JOB!!! Can't wait to see more.
Man, the acting in this one was fantastic. I was especially impressed with the doctor (David Cox). Excellent episode!
Thanks Chubz. We worked pretty hard on it as we only had ONE day to shoot it all but it came together nicely.
You consider that good acting? Interesting.
@RedneckSpaceMan We agree that the acting wasn't Oscar worthy. Thanks for the reply.
Enjoyed this.Very good.
Thank you very much for this. My late mom, and many of my aunts and cousins, are nurses, and they have told me about their experiences related to dying patients.
Thank you so much for watching.
Wow...another good video from another Star Trek Franchise. You guys are doing an excellent job...keep them coming.
That was beautiful, thank you.
Thank you too!
Excellent episode.
Awesome video! Loved seeing a young Leonard McCoy!
Wow, this was really something different, looks like TOS feels like Gene's vision. I really enjoyed it.
I like this. It brings to life what Star Trek is all about. Different but familiar, bold yet original. Nice job.
Oh wow ... awesome video!
I love it! This made me laugh and cry. How very touching it is!
Liked the title sequence and the different take
Well done. Very well done.
Great special effects and acting all 'round.
Now this is what Star Trek is about. Heart... soul... and hope for the future. Discovery will NEVER have that. Well done... WELL DONE. Thank you. Going to bed now... knowing there are still people out there that understand what GR was trying to do.
A poor attempt that elevates bathos over pathos. Overacting and a mediocre script that makes a child's speech much too adult and the too-oft used cliche of alcoholic drink and mea culpa does no justice to the message.
This was excellent.
This one touched me hard. No Ihave not lost my children but I'm a medic and I have lost a few. Every time you see your own child. The hardest has always been the children. The 12 year old I worked on for over an hour and we lost, the three year old whose father was a truck driver who was told about his son's death while on the road. the five year old trapped beanethe his father's body after an accident. I held his son for him so he could say good by before I took the father to the big city 90 minutes away. If you are wondering, yes what the doctor is talking about is true, those deaths stick with us. We are sore loseres
The episode title resumes all. Beautiful and emotional 😭
Nicely done. Very trek.
Nice "back fill" of this story! Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
This makes me wish they had explored other series with the other ships. Great job.
Very enjoyable episode. Well written and acted, and the props/sets are spot on. Can't wait for the next episode.
We are actually working on two episodes. The sequel to our first episode entitled "Legacy
Beautiful done, really touched the heart strings, I nice cameo appearance by a young Doctor McCoy before his assignment to the Enterprise.
I loved it..
Thank you.
This ep touched me.. truly deep.. outstanding job.
Thank you sir.
Really enjoyed this.Acting very good & a great script.
🖖😎👍Very well and very nicely done indeed 👌.
Great short story!
Thank you sir, we appreciate the kind words.
This really dors have a good balance between quality of visuals, effects, establishing the looks of the show as well as really good acting. Most shows, either or, even if in the end the production is still a good one
Thank you kind sir. We have another episode in the works releasing before years ends. Thank you so much for watching.
I’m crying and sobbing here
A very poignant story, I look forward to your next one. I thought the children did a great job in this too!
Thank you sir. I will pass on that to Reagan and Presley.
Another stupendous effort. Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you Mark. We appreciate your kindness.
You have the best fan treck ever I love the acting it's good your best on UA-cam
This is so great. The acting is superb. Nicely done. :) Love the introduction!
There is nothing like originality, long live the original series. Oh that episode was very well done by all especially the girls that portrayed the sisters 👯. They did a great job and the doctor 👨⚕️ as well again long live the original series of Star Trek. Ivan J
Great set. Good show, made me 😭
That noise in sick bay would drive me nuts.
Hope to see more very soon........
Great story! I love the way you stay true to TOS. Great job!!
Thanks.
This was nicely done. Great job! Very emotional!
I have not finished this video as of yet, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the opening with the 'quiet' music, and the interesting visuals of planets and space. Now, to finish watch the video. Oh, and thanks for sharing.
Thank you kind sir. Brady Foster, the director created the wonderful and epic visuals for Valiant and he'll certainly appreciate reading your comment.
Absolutely wonderful... Bittersweet, yet heartwarming... plus we got to see Dr. Leonard McCoy before his fateful assignment to the USS Enterprise! 😁
Glad you enjoyed it
@@StarshipValiant ❤
The doctor reminds me of the Skipper from Gilligang's Island.
Focus on the human element, excellent work.
Good job, David. :)
thank you very much . it has been a great experiance working with all these talented people....cant wait to do it again :D
12:12 Did anybody noticed that some of the clouds on the planet is shaped like a starship viewed from the rear?
Have seen live and death while in the army, Doctors have to deal with it daily as well all who deal with life and death carry a cross to bear all the time
Great production. Even though the captain looks like Rush Limbaugh. This fan production must have some real cash from for the look of the realistic CBS bridge from the original series. Good job
In actuality, this production cost us around 500.00 and director Michael L. King paid all out of pocket for it. The sets were build at Starbase Studios in Oklahoma where many of us volunteered our time and money to help out with costs. The photographer, special effects, editor, sound-everyone worked for free for our love for star trek. Thank you for watching.
Great production! A little more finesse to the vocals would help. And that McCoy character! Just a little slower, more thoughtful delivery and a tad of a southern drawl and it could be De Kelley himself! Great work!
Good stuff - makes you
Think
Very good
Great episode guys, well done :) Cheers from the guys here at Dark Armada, we also just released an episode ;)
Thank you! We will be watching it tonight!
Good job on getting Frank Jenks to do the part of McCoy looks like a baby-faced Deforest Kelley awesome looks so much like him I thought it was Deforest Kelley's son either that or they are related the resemblance is uncanny
very well done. Worthy to the name o Startrek
With so early a Stardate, the uniforms et al should have been from the Captain Pike era.
Well done. Mr. Rodenberry would have been proud.
Well done! Well written, well acted and the visual effects are stunning!!! Wow! As a fellow Oklahoman I couldn't be more proud. :) I'm down here in Altus but I'd love to be able to see your studio one day.
If he's that senior in service, it would make sense for the Valient's doctor to be a full Commander (two solid stripes).
Did the captain change? The pilot made a big point about Mr. King's character taking the center seat.
Eric Beyer No, Bishop is still captain in the series, remember Captain Clark died in the opening of Legacy? This story takes place years earlier.
Ooooooh. Was this explained in the story and I totally missed it? Sorry for being dense.
It says on the website that Jeffrey M. Kimbro captained the Valiant in Legacy...So it could have been passed down to more than one captain, or are they retconning their own history.
Surprisingly moving and poignant.
Perfect Trek...Thank you.
so i am an old softie - i shed a tear - then i had a think about all the children dying in senseless wars today by the hand of politicians - TO WHAT END ???
very nice Star Trek episodes
This is by far the best episode of any of the fan based shows, or even main stream shows for that matter. It was very hard to watch because it was so moving. Plus it home for me. Looking forward to your next effort.
We will be adding English subtitles for the hearing impaired in the next week.
StarshipValiant What about german translation 😆
We are currently trying to find someone who could assist in that. Any ideas?
StarshipValiant You could ask one of our german TV channals.
For example ZDF
StarshipValiant I apologize for my bad English, there might be some mistakes in it
Du glaubst doch nicht das sich unsere öffentlich rechtlichen sich für Star Trek Fanprojekte einsetzen...never ever
