  • Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the first issue of Marvel's bizarre ongoing series based on 2001: A Space Odyssey!

ORIGINAL INFO: My God… it’s full of- wait, what the hell IS this?
RUMINATIONS: Let’s start with the dedication. Marcus Almand was a comic creator, fan, and friend of mine who created the book “Razor Kid,” a poster of which is featured in several of the opening credits. Marcus was also supposed to play one of the astronauts in the Atop the Fourth Wall Movie, but he sadly passed away because of cancer shortly before this episode was finished. I felt he deserved some acknowledgment, as a result.
Speaking of the Atop the Fourth Wall Movie, behold the on-screen debut of Lanipator as Allen! The first draft of the movie’s script was done by this point and one of the critiques I had gotten on it was that nobody knew who the hell Allen was, so we needed to at least acknowledge him in the show first, thus the slow build throughout the storyline until we finally see him. And of course because of who he was, the first of many Dragonball Z Abridged references with him singing “Cat Loves Food.”
This storyline is probably the most other-people-intensive storyline I’ve done, with additional actors on hand en masse - Lanipator, Will, and Amethyst of course for cast members, but then the Star Trek bridge was supplied by a fan, Michael Stutleberg, who lives in Minnesota and had a bridge originally made for fan productions in the area. It’s obviously not a 1-to-1 recreation, but it’s damn close in a lot of spots and you still can tell what it is. Filming in that was done in the previous July and it was MISERABLE. The set is stored in a shed without any air conditioning, so combine the heat of summer with a lot of lights and electronics and you can see why I decided to start stripping off garments (and not just for in-story reasons). My brother also assisted in filming shots in this, using his own phone as a camera for shots where it’s along the wall facing me. Jamie Soar (who sadly did not go credited in this one, along with Lanipator and Jackson Marriott’s fantastic sound effects library he gave me) was the one who did the instrumentals for the Harvey Finevoice Christmas album the previous year and I had wanted some leitmotif music for the show. I commissioned three pieces from him - “A New Identity,” which premiered here, and two others along similar lines. One, “Plans,” was utilized in the AT4W Movie during scenes on the Caelestis. And finally, Emily Hobbs for the animation of the battle between Vyce and Nimue. Emily in the past also created the cutaway internal graphic of Comicron One, used in both the previous storyline and in the movie. In addition, she created the metal Pollo body that Vyce possessed a few storylines ago, so it only makes sense that she’d still be contributing to it.
We also finally see a shot of the hallway leading to the bridge. I would have loved to have had Marobot do some new Bridge shots and hallways so I didn’t reuse shots I had, but he had disappeared by this point (wherever you are, Marobot, I hope you’re doing well).
The change in outfit was something I had been wanting to do for a while. Simply put, my old outfit was getting, well, old. Not just that I’d been using it for so long and I wanted to shake things up a bit, but just the fact is that even before I started wearing it for Atop the Fourth Wall, my plaid shirt was over ten years old. Areas of it were getting worn and starting to fall apart a bit, so a new outfit was necessary anyway. Taking what I learned from the past five years of wearing that outfit combination, I decided that any outfit I made would need to have parts easily replaceable as well as maybe have a version that could be ripped up and destroyed if I so chose. Thus a button-down shirt and a tie and vest (which I found a store on ebay that sold them where I bought a ton of). The jacket was made by both myself and my grandmother, so if it was ever destroyed or lost, we could make a new one, but of course it was so large it was going to be difficult to film in, so it’s really just there for storyline-related material.
Since I wasn’t ready to begin “The Sleepwalker” yet, I decided I needed another storyline in between that could fill the gap and do some hinting for the Sleepwalker, thus I decided to advance the King of Worms into a full storyline and do something with all the cybermats I had lying around. And thus begins “Machinations of Worms.”

You know, with Kirby's style, you would think he'd be assigned Star Wars or Star Trek-those are pretty colorful franchises.

Star Wars was actually influenced by Kirby's work. Darth Vader has many parallels to Dr.Doom and the force was modeled after the source from the New Gods.

It is entirely possible for a man to be enormously skilled and talented, but be totally wrong for a certain type of project.
You wouldn't get Stanley Kubrick to direct a Disney film.
You wouldn't get Miyazaki to adapt a Stephen King horror novel.
And you shouldn't get Jack Kirby to do Space Odyssey.

I am a huge Arthur C Clarke fan & he actually wrote a diary based around his work on 2001: A Space Odyssey with Kubrick. There are a lot of really interesting facts about 2001.
    1) The bridge of the spaceship had been completed when Clarke visited the movie set - when asked how he liked it, Clarke remarked "it looks like the wallpaper in my local Indian Restaurant".... the bridge was ripped out and refitted the next time he showed up on set.
    2) Several different shapes, sizes and texture monoliths were tried for filming including pyramids and spheres.
    3) The song "Daisy Daisy" being sung at the end my Hal9000 is a reference to the first song his is taught during the book DESPITE this teaching happening in the movie.
    4) The space pod from 2001 actually appears in The Phantom Menace... though slightly disguised.

Every time I watch this episode, I get a certain Doctor Who-vibe in general from the storyline-bit:
-confidence in a plan that seems insane without explanation
-Linkara getting bored and doing something else while waiting
--Linkara turning Nimue back on reminded me strongly on the 11th Doctor unleashing the TARDIS_matrix on house in "The Doctor's Wife"
-the choosing of a new outfit feels a lot like a Doctor choosing one post-regeneration

It’s sort of a trope. Not an entirely COMMON trope, as the way it’s handled tends to be a little more cerebral than most media is willing to go nowadays, but it’s still a trope.
The bit that comes to mind is how Mab is defeated in the Merlin tv series, but I know I’ve seen it elsewhere

I didn't know you had a brother and it's neat that your grandmother also helped with the new coat. I thought you had made that all by yourself. It's like you're whole family has helped in some way to make the show. It's nice and makes me think of the dress my grandmother made me when I was little and when my mother said she wanted to listen to my show and told me that she was proud of me.Also, this is the storyline that made me start watching AT4W and then go back and catch up on all the plotline videos (not really into western comics). I started watching AT4W episodes on and off sometime during the Gunslinger arc (the advertisement special with douchey), but never quite fallowed the show until this plot line. I'm looking forward to more and it's always cool to see your thoughts on the episode and storylines.

The film's craftsmanship attention to detail really is astonishing and it works remarkably well on that front even today. I literally only just now realized that the reason the space stewardess wears that goofy Spaceballs hat is so her (presumably long) hair doesn't fly everywhere during zero G.

ahhh, this episode. I may not like this particular arc (I'm not sure why, though except for maybe the "Insane rogue AI" cliche), but I LOVE this finale. It's so AWESOME! It does the cyberspace battle fairly well, but it also give me a GOOD reason to be kinda afraid of Nimue without being an "insane rogue AI" cliche.

A couple of quibbles about the description of the movie:
    1. The 1:4:9 dimensions of the monolith get emphasized over and over in Clarke's novel... but the monolith prop that appears in the movie doesn't actually have those dimensions at all. It's considerably longer and thinner-- 1:4:9 would have looked more squat and brick-like. As filmed, the monolith suggests a door, and also the super-wide dimensions of the movie screen, both symbolic connections that I'm sure Kubrick was going for deliberately. So Kirby's weird, squat, crumbly stone monoliths were even further off than Linkara suggested.
    2. It stands to reason that the crewmembers in suspended animation would know about the true mission of Discovery, and, again, I think the novel might have said that... but if you listen closely to what Heywood Floyd says in the video that HAL plays as his last dying act, I think it implies that they weren't briefed either! Only HAL knew what was going on.

While I admitted that I found the "Ghost in the Machine" storyline to be just okay, I will say that I was impressed by the "auxiliary control" center set or rather as Jeris put it, "the bridge from Star Trek". Being a fan myself, I couldn't help but smile. Plus, that interruption from Jeris during the beginning of the theme song, after hearing what Linkara was going to do, (what he always dose) basically review a comic book while they were constant peril, was priceless LOL!!! I'm shocked that he didn't add "You really are insane!!!"

Man, the show was so much better before Linkara changed outfits*. Not only his new outfit doesn't match up with his channel avatar,** but he lied about switching hats!* Also, what is up with Pollo? He used to be the crowning achievement of makeshift props, but now that he has a new outfit he thinks it's "not good enough" for him anymore, so he has a more "professional" one. And what in the hell is up with the goddamned riffs? He is clearly only doing it because Doug did That Guy Riffs, and don't even get me started on the shelves, instead of getting rid of them, he added more! Worst of all, he had the audacity, the NERVE to start another Let's Play?! What, was reviewing comics not enough anymore? He is obviously trying to cash in on the Let's Play business. What a sellout.**
*I actually love his new outfit and I remember being excited as hell while waiting to see it being revealed for the first time. Although, for some reason I kept imagining it being a green coat like Linkara 2099.
**my only legitimate criticism, but that's due to to my OCD.

I don't care.... I love Kirby's 2001. It's an entirely different thing than the movie, but got dang.... Kirby's just being Kirby. How can I hate it? Personally, if I were to rate things, the movie would be first, the comic second and.... sorry, Clarke... the book third. I love Arthur C. Clarke, but his book lacks the spectacle and awe of the other two versions. But honestly, I look at Kirby as kind of having a few elements from the movie, and taking that and running with it. I just wish he was able to use Metron and the monolith in the same comic.

actually I think I would like 2001 a space Odyssey more if it was like this comic, it would be like Yor: the hunter from the future

  • @Merit2397
    @Merit2397 2 роки тому

As for the 2001: A Space Odyssey Comic, I actually think it's better than the movie (I know big surprise) because like with its sequel 2010: The Year We Make Contact, someone decided to write a script this time around and not to be vague and mysterious for the sake of it. I can respect what Jack Kriby was trying to do by tying in the theme of evolution more in with the characters than just the devices we create such as how we went from a club to a highly advanced computer. However, I will agree that they should have hired an artist to better match the style of the movie like Lewis pointed out.
