This JDM 1994 Toyota Celica GT-Four is a Much More Important Car Than It Gets Credit For

  • When I first saw this car I have admit to rolling my eyes a little bit. As a gearhead kid, I was raised on American V8s, and the birth of the Ricer movement seemed strange and offensive - not to mention expensive. The cost per HP of a 4 cylinder turbo in 1991 was a hell of a lot more than in a small block Chevy. As the turbo world eclipsed the V8 world, I lost interest and bought a Buick Riviera.
I regret that now, because I missed out on some pretty neat stuff. The Celicas of the late 80s and early 90s seemed a bit dull and nondescript to me at the time, but having learned more about them later in life, I realize what an important and interesting series of cars these were.
That said, the JDM and ricer subculture drives me insane. I'd rather hang out with Porsche enthusiasts or BMW guys, and that's really saying something.

Maybe West Coast is different, but many of us GenX guys here (who are older than Bill!) have been JDM, WRC and Euro nuts since the Malaise Era.
We HATED what Detroit represented (Landau Roof Mecca) and were messing with Hondas, Saabs, GTIs & rally cars while the V8 crowd lumbered around in land yachts.
Love the ST205 and the 1995 WRC season!!

In order they have been 84, 88Si, 85HF, and current 88Si. Wonderful cars and I hope you can do a review on one someday if you can ever find a low mileage stock model. Impossible as that may be. And as a Honda owner I have the same loathing for Toyota as I do Ford being I am a Chevy guy as well. It distressed me that both Toyota and Ford ( for their SHO Taurus) had help from Yamaha, as I am a Yamaha guy when it comes to bikes. Forza Vale`!

In England we drive on the left with the steering on the right because back in the day the horse rider would hold his jousting stick in his right hand. Maybe the same for Japan. But your history started a few centuries after that so I guess it wasn't an issue. Regarding turn signal stalks it used to be the case in England that stalks were on the right as in this car. Again there was sense to this as this is the hand you would use to make hand signals. Probably why US cars have turn signals left hand side. In any case Euro rules trashed that and the majority of cars here now have signals left. Maybe next time you do a right-hooker you can quote some jousting knowledge. Just to fill it out a bit, you know.

I was visiting Saskatchewan (left hand dr) and offered to drive a drunk girl home in her pickup one Sat night. I'd never driven left hand drive and it was confusing and i felt totally out of balance by it - i was so bad at left hand drive she and being drunk picked up on it made me stop said it was too dangerous and drove us instead that's how bad i was at it.

I think the actual video starts around 18:50.
Honestly, great walk around minus the rambling in the beginning.

This is one of the funniest video I've watched on UA-cam. Especially with the weebs getting offended in the comment section.

In Australia you can buy what’s called a band converter that shifts the FM up 10 MHz , specifically for S/H Japanese imports . I used to fit loads of them ! Just plugs into the antenna lead & 12v supply . Saves changing the radio .

Japanese auto culture is multi-faceted, just as it is with the American side. You have the Fast and Furious dullards who only got interested in the scene from that genre of movies, ricing everything out contrary to any semblance of functionality, and you have the more technical-oriented serious people. Seems to be split pretty evenly. The actual owners of JDM-only cars are largely the latter

Some people dream about having Lamborghinis or Ferraris, others about classic muscle like 69 mustangs and chevelles, some dream about supras and GT-Rs. Me? I dream about the 94 celica, doesn’t matter the package, I want one and it’s not a ridiculous goal.

My grandma had an All Trac in the 1990's bought new in 1993, by 2000 it was rusted away and was replaced with an Impreza wagon (not WRX) I wanted to purchase it since the Subaru dealer was giving her 800$ in exchange but the car couldn't even be put on the lift for inspection so everyone figured it was a fair offer and I passed...

I love some of the jdm cars for what they are and how they look, not for the whole SUPERCAR KILLER thing, I watch anime and like japanese culture in general, but OH MY GOD the first ten minutes were one of the best of my life xD

20 years ago my friend blew up his transmission in his eclipse doing burnouts (the diff exploded) i let him tow it to my house (begging my mom) so his dad wouldn't kill him while we fixed it. He came over on his bicycle to "work on the car" and pulled a god damn fart can out of his backpack.
Before buying a new transmission from the junkyard he got a fart can.
I hated those things, i pretended i had to work on my car so that i could distance myself without being mean... He knew i thought they were dumb too.
He put it on, then had to take the exhaust off anyways to do the trans. Silly story, reminded by "jdm" and the rice explosion of 2000. Later he got neons and wanted help hiding the switch...
Who would have thought 20 years later we'd see trucks and jeeps get riced out with neon lights!

I do not understand the distain for the glasspack type of muffler on 4cyl cars...it makes them sound nasty!...I can remember that a lot of old VW Bugs sported a version of those mufflers--made my Ghia sound sporty, even if it was not really a sporty car!..lol...your attitude is just another way express your anger at foreign cars in general.
