    Looking forward to that comparison between the Trident and the WA73s. If you haven't already recorded the next phase, wondering if you could talk through your process to check that all the mics are in phase. This is still such a mystery to me with my home drum recordings. Love this kind of content from this channel!

    Unless I've missed it, a video on how you tune your drums would be fantastic. They sound awesome. I have finally been able to get back into drums again and after so many years of not playing much, it almost feels like I'm learning for the first time again on some things. So that'd be cool man. 👍

    Andrew: always crack the glue at the edges on remo heads, just press hard with your thumb undtil it crackles, before you seat them. It saves you hours of tuning. Back in the day you were probably told to tune them hard at first to get the cracks out, not needed with this method -- And they sound better right away

    When I was in high school (trumpet player), I got to hang out in the band room - a lot. I was always fascinated by the way drums sounded on songs on the radio. Why don't "real" drums sound like that I would ask. One day I started noodling around on the kit, using different things to muffle the drums. Out of nowhere, I got the idea to take the canvas tympani covers and lay them flat against the tom heads. WHAT!? That was the sound! I was in flam heaven! To this day, I NEVER have any disdain for how anyone might choose to "tone" their drums. Always keep an open mind. This is how those "miracles" happen in the studio. BTW, I did eventually go to college, earning a degree in recording. I really like your channel Andrew. I'm right down here in the Memphis area - might have to meet up with you someday!

    My go-to for controlling overtones of the snare is using a square piece of 2" tape and taping a guitar pick in the middle of the square tape. The pick has slightly more mass than just tape and the pick "floats" on the head. It does a lot and little at the same time.

    Those are visually striking drums, nice wood grain, the white inner ring just enough to set them apart, distinctive but not showy. The one-up one-down config with the tom mounted on a snare basket stand is classic, an absolute must---go big or go home. Yeah, the new heads sounded better but the old ones sounded like Led Zeppelin 4 so one gets backed into the Gordian corner of making a nuanced choice. Like any guitarist needs more than one guitar I'm convinced every drummer needs two kits, a barebones set-up like this as well as a more expansive one to channel their inner Bozzio when the spirit moves them. But, any drummer who has the luxury of two kits will tell you the 4-piece is harder to play.

    If you ever get a chance to check out Audient stuff, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I think their mic pres and jfet DIs are arguably the cleanest on the market while still holding some character. Personally, my dream workflow would be a selection of Neve 1073, UA, and Trident A-Range channel strips going into some different classic compressor/limiters (Empirical, UA, TubeTech, SSL, etc.), and into an Audient ASP8024 console.

      Are you talking the Neve 1073OPX 8-channel Microphone Preamp with Remote Control, it seem cheap for under 4k, If I come into some free money I might have to snag one. I've got the cheep clones right now and a 500 rack for them. They sound good but I'm sure the Neve would blow them out of the water. But even the cheap clones compaired to just class A amps sound just huge on drums, guitar, bass, will everything. I would like to do a in the mix of real Neve preamps V's the cheap clone and set the whole mix the same and see how much differnce there is, and is it worth the extra bucks or not. It would be nice to have that Neve 1073 OPX with that Remote Control, that would be so nice.

    Hey: I listened closely on decent monitors. I LOVE the tom-toms! I prefer them undampened. At first I thought that those were AKG'S, but I'm guessing that those are Warm's remakes, right? Once you started playing at the end of the video I started liking the snare drum. Personally, I think the bass-drum could use a touch more "attack." Fet 47's are really great close up on the kick. Sometimes I can use just that one microphone (fet 47) on the kick, which is better for phase. Have you ever tried taking a mic and pointing at the drummr's (you, in this case) right knee? Check it out! I love your channel and watch every one of your videos. Also, try "really getting into" using the Trident on everything. I find that when I do all tracking on a good console, there's a "certain cohesiveness" that comes from that workflow. Sorry for bombarding you with all my opinions. Thank-you.

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  Рік тому

      Thanks! Those are akg 414's on toms. Yeah i've used the crotch mic for a long time, in fact this is the first session I changed it up in a while. The kick beater blend is just a matter of taste, I have the kick in mic pulled down a bit lower in this specific bounce of the drums, bringing it up a few dB makes it much more present. It'll be cool to see where it winds up as the song comes together.

    Why not use a splitter for the drum mics and go into both the Warm Audio Pres and the Trident Pres so you can get a true comparison? If you come back and re-record the drums on the Trident after using the Warm Audio will not be an apples to apples comparison because you may play differently the second time. Using a microphone splitter and going through both Warm Audio and Trident then record both then it will be a true apples to apples comparison.

    Andrew, when you do the shootout hopefully you will gain match the preamps using a signal generator. It is important to not fool the listener's ears by one preamp being louder than the next. I'm no scientist, but even a .10 dB difference in the preamp levels over the course of your 12 mics would yield a substantial and unfair advantage. That's at a minimum. Pie in the sky would be using transformer isolated splitters to make sure you capture the performance on both sets of preamps at the same time. Again, you hitting the drums quieter or louder (even if minuscule) on a comparison take would be a truly unfair A/B. Love the channel btw!

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  Рік тому

      Yeah, with all do respect I would never do that practically. When I use a piece of gear I'm not using it for some sterile comparison purpose as I would never use the gear like that practically. I will always use the gear exactly how I would use it on a session for the performance in the way that's best for the song. Essentially "steel man"ing each unit and then comparing the best of both. That's how it makes sense to me.

    • @monarch_music
      @monarch_music Рік тому

      @@AndrewMasters As a creator myself I don't do that either -- no one does. I was just pointing out that I could easily make some cheap Amazon/Behringer/Samson/HotGarbageTrash channel strips sound better than your Warms and Trident console if I goosed the right EQ and they were louder on playback. Really, I was just suggesting that if you don't do it scientifically then you shouldn't call it a shootout or even a comparison -- maybe call it a "personal workflow exhibition"?!? Lol. Looking forward to it!

    honestly a better comparisonwould be to split the mic signal and use BOTH pres at the same time so its the exact same performance.

    Andrew... You have high end patchbays. why didn't you just set the drums to mult out to both warm and the trident. then you'd have a real comparison. not a different performance.

    "... From Sweetwater. They sent it over for me to have and review..." should that be interpreted as they are loaning or gave it to you? As a 20 year studio owner, I've never been in a position to drop 20k on any single element of my studio after the build-out inside the building I rent. I'll admit that I was pretty demoralized by that first video about this console. It wasn't envy, it was just a big case of WTH am I doing wrong? I invested in a Trinnov last year and I couldn't be happier but it still hurts to see how shallow my well remains.

      He's just a sweetwater sales rep in disguise as a normal studio owner....it's the new marketing technique used to make you think this is just a normal guy making reviews....he owns none of this equipment.....everywhere you look it's product placement.....all brought to you by sweetwater sound....so don't feel bad.

      I record at home but I for sure asked what hours were best to not record or practice.
      I also did my fair sure of acoustic treatment and sound absorption to help minimize it.
      If you can get some audimute sound blankets and some thing to hang them up with and it helps a lot

    Doingcomparisoncomprasion but not recording the exact same performance with both doesn't seem like that great of an idea to me. Even as an experienced drummer, the difference between the performances is almost certainly going to be larger than the difference between the pres. Unless of course you heavily distort them, but even then recording the same performance twice would make a lot more sense.

    I'm so torn on this. On one hand, why spend all the money to have beautiful drums like that, just to choke the life out of them with all that muffling? On the other hand, do what you gotta do to get the sound you want for the project. haha.

    5:02 --- IMHO... heads are toooo loooose.... tighten them up a bit to get more tone and stick response... My go to tuning = find where the top head sings the best for that size drum, and then tune the top heads slightly tighter than the bottom heads... then tweak for optimal tone/sustain/etc.............................
