In 96-97 I was in the 6th grade and there was only 1 kid in our neighborhood with a N64 and every kid that lived nearby could not wait to get out of school to go to his house and play Mario Kart 64 so much fun! I myself did not get an N64 until 98 but my favorite game was Ocarina of time.

Oh the N64, how I loved thee.
I got mine in late '96 right after military Basic Training, right as soon as I got ro my technical school for the next step before being stationed.
I bought almost every single release game (except PilotWings and Gretzky) along with 4 controllers and also Mario Kart 64. I literally RULED the entire dorm room TV common area in my wing with that system and game library. You wouldn't believe how packed that room would get; everyone had to play this stuff...and did. We had the craziest 4-player Mario Kart parties! Wow, that was a good time. That thing probably ran 24 hours a day. lol

N64 was released in march 97 in germany an I played the hell out of it. After the release of the great zelda OOT I think the n64 ran a little bit out of steam and I only played Majoras Mask, Perfect Dark, SmashBros and Banjo afterwards. The playststion with it´s strong RPG lineup grapped me by the throat but I still love my n64 collection of 66 games.

I got Mario 64 with the system when I picked it up. I never got pilot wings as it wasn't really my type of game. I do remember how hard it was getting games on the system. They didn't come out often and when they did it was like hunting rare gems trying to find them in stock in stores. It was still fun though. In 96 I believe I had Mario 64, MK, Crusin USA, and Shadows of the empire. The N64 may have not aged well but it is still one of my favorites because of that time period in my life was a good one.

Wow these were the launch titles for N 64?... These games are like top 10 of all time. I love every game you showed. Usually I won't even like every game in a launch line up. I didn't buy the system in 1996...I have played all these games though like years later. The only one I played in 1996 was Super Mario 64 at a mall. All awesome games..Going to have to go with Mario 64 though...
Times before the internet were very rough. Now for a launch line up, just download the game, look it up on youtube, order it in the mail...Just the fact now you can look up whole walkthroughs on youtube makes that much of a huge difference when buying games.
Back then we had to rely on video game magazines which is not good at all because I had to rely on
the magazine whether a game is good or not with reading & only pics they showed..Or your friends telling you.. You would have to hop on a bus & metro just to go to the mall...The mall would only have Mario 64....So you couldn't check out the other 8 games unless you bought the system & rented games at Block buster or other video rental places...This is why the today & now is so much better than Yester year....

He didn’t say it was a failure. He actually said it wasn’t. It just wasn’t nearly as successful as previous consoles and the PS1 outsold it by a long shot. The Nintendo 64 had fewer games also, but the great games on it were truly great. It’s the one console that I regret getting rid of the most and now they’re expensive so I can’t justify buying one.

Mario 64 isn't Mario either. It's a clumsy 3D platformer and it sucks

In '96 we rented the N64 from Blockbuster with Mario 64, Wave Race 64, and Crusin' USA. It was a mind blowing weekend!

N64 is my most nostalgic console, it reminds me of my high school days. I LOVED Banjo Kazooie, DK64 and Road Rash 64 so much!

Wayne Gretzky's 3D hockey is still played by myself and my friends regularly. The game is possessed. You can be up 8 goals to 4 in the third period with two minutes remaining and you know, you KNOW the game is somehow going to restrict you and your opponents are going to come back and win 11-10. It just happens.

Got my 64 for Christmas that year. Spent my Christmas vacation(which got extended due to snow thankfully) playing Mario 64 and Shadows of the Empire and MK. Loved those games! Then got KI Gold and liked playing that a lot too

Dude. Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey was our neighborhoods JAM! 4 player on that was a constant during the 64 era. So much damned fun out of that back when there was nothing else to play.

I’m a big hockey fan. I definitely had Wayne Gretzky 3D hockey. I remember playing it at a funco land and my father (being a big hockey fan also) bought it for me. We used to play blades of steel together all the time. And we played this one too

I remember when the N64 came out I still was wanting a SNES. We had a Genesis that my bro got in '92 or '93 and all my friends had a SNES with Super Mario World, which I absolutely loved playing. I started saving my allowance for an SNES and my dad and older brother were trying to sell me on getting the new N64 cuz "it has better graphics" and etc blah blah blah and I wasn't having any of it. I was dead set on getting the SNES so I could play Super Mario World at my leisure, which I eventually did and enjoyed every minute of it. Funny thing was at the time my family was about a year or less out from moving to IN, when we moved that first year was so rough on me I didn't hang out with anybody for that entire school year. The friends I did start hanging out with one of them got an N64 that upcoming Christmas. It was either the 26th or 27th I was out with my dad shopping and making returns and we stopped into a Funcoland (remember those!?!?!?!), knowing my friend got the N64 and seeing how interested I was with it in the store... and knowing how hard the move was on me... my dad bought me (and my older brother) an N64 for a belated Christmas gift. We got Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64, I still remember hooking it all up to the tv before my brother coming home from work then showing him the surprise dad got us. Still one of my favorite Christmas memories. Also what made it even better was that winter we had a big blizzard come through and we only had like a 1/2 day of school that entire first week "back" from Christmas break, and I remember playing Goldeneye everyday that Christmas break. In the end I still feel vindicated for getting my SNES, cuz I still have it and history has shown that the SNES was an awesome system, more so than the N64 is remembered for being, so I'm glad I stuck to my guns at the time however late it was in it's lifecycle. But I'm even more glad I got to experience both systems.

Asking for a supreme combo in the killer instinct voice must have been the 90s equivalent to asking for the Travis burger at McDonald’s lol

John, I absolutely love the Pilotwings series. I am very disappointed that the last pilotwings was on their portable console. We haven't had a true console game of this since 64 I think.

Got the n64, 2nd controller, rumble pack, plus 5 games.
Got goldeneye, Mario 64 wave race, mark kart 64 and blast corps.
It was a lot at the time, but that was a present for me and my 3 siblings.

Mario 64 kept us busy with pilotwings as well. Lil bro loved killer instinct I mean fighting werewolf! Cruisin was a blast also. Biggest problem is I have such fond memories of these but revisiting them has been very meh. Honestly this was a good lineup of games I had and loved everything except gretzky since we weren't hocky fans.
