Hey John. Great video. Little correction on your video. Super Mario Bros 3 came out in July of 89 on the Play Choice 10 before the Wizard released. I bring this up becuase for years I been telling people that I played it after seeing batman in the theater around my birthday. And my mom rented out the arcade on free play for my 10th birthday party. And I played it then too. For years I was told I was nuts. That it did not come out till after. And that I was lying. But it has been confirmed now that it did come out in early July on the PC 10 a few months before the wizard. Thanks for the video.
Mario bros 3 has such a sweet spot in my heart man, I remember as a kid getting to world 3 and being so amazed, last time i beat it without skipping a level on my Nes with 94 lives!
Found it funny how you could use a Judgem's Cloud to skip an action scene (level you found too hard), lose to the Koopa Kid, the Airship goes back near the beginning of the map, you have to enter the level you skipped, only to be on your last life then have to continue. Man that was a challenge! At least the fortress stayed destroyed because the Roto Discs and falling into the lava were a pain to jump over sometimes.
There is no chance that I will ever be sorry for all the hours of my life I spent on games like Faxanadu, Tyson's Punch Out, Zelda 1&2, StarTropics, Mario 2&3 and Kid Icarus. Just seeing this video makes me want to play these games right now. 👍
That game was so hard for me growing up I used to remember watching my mom and my Dad's friend nerd out on that. Whenever I tried to play I couldn't get past those blobby dudes
Ice Hockey in my country is non existent. However the nes ice hockey game was very popular purely because it was such fun to play. Was so happy to see it appear on switch online
Something open world akin to BoTW naturally. But with islands and water travel whether by sub or boat or whatever. It’d be soo good. Oh yeah, going to space in the endgame?! This needs to happen.
Dragon Warrior was definitely my first ever RPG. My best friend was borrowing it and it just did NOT click at first. I'd been playing stuff like Zelda and Faxanadu, so having a menu where you just picked "Fight" seemed so alien to me at the time but I kinda started getting more interested in it over the course of the day I was hanging out there. Then Final Fantasy II on SNES hooked me and I've been an RPG fanatic ever since.
Yeah, the difficulty feels very front loaded. Especially by starting it off with a vertical level instead of the later side scrolling ones. Great game though, but I might prefer the Gameboy one even more.
I'm with you with Mario 2. Always felt the same way. I got it like the day after release! A kid at school hated it because it wasn't a Mario game (I had the same feelings about Zelda 2 lol) but I loved it. I traded him some other game for it and it became one of my favorites. I got 3 and played through that latter too, sure, but I always like 2 the best. Today, the original is where it's at when I want a quick trip down memory lane.
Single player is an S tier too. Brilliant puzzle game that doesn't get the attention it deserves. Probably because it was a late stage NES game and was also available on the SNES.
Wow! Great Video, John. You hit the nail on the head about sharing Zelda tips on the playground at school. I was in 4th grade when it came out. Of course, no internet, no guide books, but lots of gossip from friends about where to find items in the game. Plenty of false tips also! But it was all anyone talked about at school for a year!
Oh I just made a comment about the super kicks before I read your comment. My friend and I used to just destroy the computer over and over again. 20-0. When you tackled a player enough times they wouldn't get back up, and we'd leave the field full of bodies at the end of the game haha. I loved World Cup so much haha
John Riggs why didn’t you include these games Nintendo published in EU? Devil World Boulder Dash Burai Fighter Kickle Cubicle The Guardian Legend Stealth ATF Little Nemo: The Dream Master Isolated Warrior Low G Man: The Low Gravity Man A Boy & His Blob Kabuki Quantum Fighter Four Players’ Tennis Pac-Man Battletoads & Double Dragon
My favorite Nintendo NES games published by Nintendo themselves are: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, Excitebike, Kung Fu, Wild Gunman, Pinball, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, Popeye, Mario Bros., Slalom, The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Metroid, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, R.C. Pro-Am, Anticipation, Dance Aerobics, World Class Track Meet, Cobra Triangle, Tetris, Tetris 2, Short Order / Eggsplode!, Pin-Bot, Final Fantasy, Punch-Out!!, Barker Bill's Trick Shooting, Dr. Mario, Nintendo World Cup, NES Play Action Football, StarTropics, Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II, SimCity (unreleased), Yoshi, Yoshi's Cookie, Kirby's Adventure, Mega Man 6, and Wario's Woods.
PIn-Bot is a technical marvel on the NES getting the screen to scroll like that so smoothly is a feat! And it's invaluable for Multiball! The Music in the game is absolutely great! It does suffer from some unneeded additions like a monster that eats your ball but you have given this great game a disservice. As an "As close to the arcade as they could have gotten" experience It deserves a low B or High C
I am with on Metroid 100%... Especially when he showed the unlocked Samus with her Armor off. I had totally forgotten that detail. I would leave Kid Icarus where it is RC Pro-Am not being an S triggered me. Edited! I said Metroid 10%. Haha. I meant 100%
Some games should be removed from S to A Tier and Metroid definately is S Tier its a very good game with good controls and genre defining, there would be no super metroid or symphony of the night without it, much later in the 90ies.
I'm with ya Riggs. I have way more nostalgia for Mario 2 than Mario 3. The fact that they gave each character their own distinct abilities gave the game so much replay-ability. Glad to hear someone else say it.
@@northofnashira2575 Doki Doki Panic started as a prototype Mario-style platform game before Fuji TV asked Nintendo to make a game based on their Yume Kōjō festival. Since some Mario elements appear in DDP, such like POW Blocks, Coins (with their classic sound effect) and Stars, it's very possible that they wanted to make it a Mario game from the beggining.
@@northofnashira2575 Yes, but that was because of Fuji TV. They had a new chance to make it a Mario game for the North American market and turn it into a new sequel, because the Japanese Mario 2 was identical to SMB1, and by the time it would came to USA it could be outdated and not innovative. Also, they improved the controls (DDP doesn't have a run button), the music was extended, they added more frames to the enemies and objects and a new boss was included (Clawgrip).
Giving Zelda II some love! Some of my favorite games of all are Zelda titles, and upon a recent replay of Zelda II, I gotta be honest it’s my favorite from the entire series.
Zelda II is my favorite as well. It controls so well, has tremendous atmosphere, and its world is fun to poke around. I like the original and Link to the Past as well, but the one I enjoy the most is 2 by a good sight.
I have been waiting forever for the Nintendo rankings! I can't imagine there are too many publishers remaining for NES, so time to dig into SNES! Anyway, I am on board with most of these grades, but Metroid HAS to be an S!! The moody atmospheric music, the genre defining open world exploration, the mystery and horror...one of the greatest games of all time! I also love Kid Icarus, but the controls are definitely rough in the modern day, yet my great memories of this game as a kid still makes it an S for me, an A at worst. Great job Riggs! I like how your videos are organic and not overproduced. You are one of the rare vloggers who seems genuine and real, like a dude I'd actually enjoy hanging with, and your videos remind me of the early glory days of G4TV before they overproduced things and sent it to the cable trash heap of also ran networks!
Enjoyed the video man! Thanks for doing this one! I smiled from ear to ear when you brought up Snake Rattle 'n Roll. It took me 30+ years but I finally beat this game earlier this year. So many incredible memories involving these assortment of games too.
To me "Startropics" felt like a "Goonies 3" with the Yo-yo as the weapon. I played "The Goonies" at the arcade on the Nintendo "Play Choice-10", and later loved "The Goonies II". There was even a spiritual sequel to the original film called "Finding ʻOhana", in 2021 it was a Netflix film, featuring an adventurous girl dragging her friends, and her disapproving brother, on an adventure to find pirate treasure. Several scenes from 'The Goonies' are parodied, with the story taking place in Hawaii. Jonathan Ke Huy Quan makes an appearance, as the character George Phan, parodying his "Slick shoes" dialogue. The middle of the film feels like a reboot of "The Goonies", but it goes its own way after that. "Zoda's Revenge :Startropic II," felt more like a Back to the Future game, and I enjoyed it more than any of the BTTF games until "Back to the Future: The Game" by TellTale, when they got the original cast to do their voice acting. Even though Michael J. Fox is playing minor characters instead of Marty, and someone else is playing Marty, but imitating Michael voice.
I forgot about this! I haven't watched many videos since the last actual NES game company rankings one..... Was wondering is he ever going to do the Nintendo published games. THANK YOU.
Totally agree, super Mario 2 is better than 3 both are good I just always preferred 2, you're the 1st person apart from myself that I've heard say that, no one used to agree with me.
I’ve played Dragon Warrior over and over again. Same for FF and I do have found memories with many of these games. Star Tropics is so amazing, I missed playing it.
I was surprised to recently learn that there is a 2 player mode in the Nintendo release of tetris. It is hidden in the code unlockable by a game genie! It's unfinished, but playable!
10:32 I am right there with you... Zelda II is also my favorite game of all time. I've bought it so many times from the original NES to the GBA and most recently on the Switch with their subscription service. Any time I setup emulation from CoinOPS to a RetroPie, I always start with The Adventure of Link. It's not S-tier... it's literally GOD-tier.
I remember seeing RC Pro-am in the arcade and it had actual steering wheels and I remember when no one was playing it the steering wheels would actually turn on their own when it was doing the demo
Finally, the Nintendo NES games rank! Spot on Mr. Riggs! Tengen Tetris soundtrack itself scratches my nostalgia hitch and is the main reason why I prefer it over Nintendo's.
Hell yeah!! Fellow Zelda II fan and proud! Awesome. Love these videos btw. Thanks for putting the time in! Think I caught you on MJR initially but either way, a great channel for casual gamers, John!
Yep! My mom saw the advertisement in the Nintendo Power magazine around Christmas time for the Dragon Warrior game. Cost 5.00 for the shipping. However, the game didn’t arrive until way after Christmas, but it was definitely a staple of my NES collection!
Ya know John, I just love your videos along with Metal Jesus. Any gamer needs to experience these retro games to better appreciate today’s games. To actually see for yourself the evolution of gaming. It was very memorable for us that grew up in the 80s 90s.
I was in my mid-30’s before I beat Mike Tyson, and it’s only because a friend and I religiously studied and played it over and over until we did it. God bless the Mike Tyson code. Great list, John!
Thank you for getting to this list, the completionist in me was scrolling through all your videos looking for this. Also pretty spot on. Just shows that Nintendo published/made (and still does) incredible games. Now if only they would give a BOTW treatment to Faxanadu, Kid Icarus, and Startropics. Nonetheless those IP’s need to re-emerge weather as a remake, reboot, or new game. It’s time for Nintendo to deep dig their properties for new ideas. Thanks again.
Yep, back in the day when I saw the Wizard, the local arcade had that Mario 3 on a play choice 10 too. I wondered why doesn't this place have signs letting everyone know about this. Anyway, had a blast playing it there before it came out.
Ouch. Rad Racer was a top racing game back in the day. Remember, we only pole position on atari 2600 just before this. This had killer styling and music, different tracks with different locations, hills, you got to drive at night! It had the desert and then cities! Oh man, you had to have been there. The killer music! Press down to change between 3 songs. You raced to reach goal points to proceed or you had to start over. Man, this was top of the line back then man. This was an S game all the way....oh wow, I just remembered the ending! I haven't beaten this game in decades! I've put it on (it's not so great by todays standards of course) to mess around with, but never played it through anymore. I'm gunna do that right after this video.
I love Pinbot! My mom had a country store back in the 90s. She had Pinbot a bunch of arcade games including Golden Axe, which I got to play for freeeeee lol
You forgot to mention in world cup that the players can die, float away as ghosts, and their bodies stay on the field. I had that and super dodge ball as a kid and they are my favorite sports games.
Of the games I regularly replay, about half are right here: Dragon Warrior, Faxanadu, Final Fantasy, Zelda I, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Nintendo World Cup, Super Mario 2, Super Mario 3. Just add in the Mega Mans, Castlevanias, Blaster Master, and Destiny of an Emperor.
Legend of Zelda and Metroid, back in the day, I taped together many sheets of graph paper. And I'd make maps. Had to do that with Metroid. And with Zelda, a square on the paper would be the size of a bush on the screen. So I could draw every bush and block on the graph paper so I could mark which bushes had secrets, etc. Both Metroid and Zelda maps were large. Nowadays, you can find maps online with all of the secrets marked for you. On Nintendo Online, I wish Nintendo would have put in a map for the NES Metroid game. Something that looks like the map system in Super Metroid. You could hit select or whatever to bring up the map. Really wish they'd do that.
@@starlaw3320 No, they were probably trashed back in the 80's. As when we'd do a large move, my parents would give us a certain number of boxes that had to fit all of our toys in. And anything we couldn't get to fit then had to get thrown away.
I feel like there are genres/styles we need need to play again. Antiquated golf games (more Golf than NES Opem) and “Pole Position” style race games are among them. Caveat of course is if you have heavy nostalgia.
Wow, had no idea that Pinbot was its own game on NES, I remember it being in the arcades, and even played it on Williams Challenge for the Wii and PlayStation 3.
Super Spike V'Ball is to this day one of my favorites. So cathartic smashing some fool in the face with a super spike...ahh yes.. *looks a retroarch icon in taskbar*
Giving Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, and Kirby's Adventure each an S rank just strengthens my respect for you. Bonus for S ranking both LoZ and LoZ2 !!!
A lot of Mario enemies had their start in Super Mario 2 USA, including Shy Guys, Bob-Ombs, Pokeys, Birdos and Mouser. Wart, the final boss of Super Mario Bros. 2 USA, would be seen again in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening under his Japanese name, Mamu, teaching Link a new song to play on his ocarina.
I didn't include Black Box games as I already ranked those earlier ua-cam.com/video/_Eu0H3I0cKA/v-deo.html
I loved stabbing down with Zelda 2.

Super Mario 2 has the best starman music
They are called levels they are not called stages
I don't know who needs to hear this but Mike Tyson's Punchout is a top 5 NES game of all time

Absolutely. At worst top 10.
I don't know about top 5 but it's definitely up there.
For me it’s number 1

Kid Icarus is a top 5 for me. The difficulty is very uneven though; I think level 1-3 might be the hardest level in the game, lol.

Cobra Triangle is such an underrated masterpiece!
Yea, Cobra Triangle is awesome
WAY too difficult for me!
Love to see faxanadu getting an S, maybe my favorite NES game
Shame we can't get it on the Switch online service
Faxanadu is so great never knew other people liked it. Seemed to be a black sheep kinda game where I seemed the only one who liked it.

One of the best ever.

I was in my mid-30’s before I beat Mike Tyson, and it’s only because a friend and I religiously studied and played it over and over until we did it. God bless the Mike Tyson code. Great list, John!
YOU FINALLY DID IT! This is amazing and I'm sure took a lot of work. Nobody ranks em like Riggs!
It's a great thing he gave Punch out, Super Mario 2-3 S tiers.
Photobomb of the decade goes to the dude in the sweet hat checking out that Mario Bros cabinet @ 23:14... lol
Nice to see Snake, Rattle and Roll in A tier, that game was badass.
John, I couldn’t agree with you more on. The Zelda 2 love. It was my favorite game on the NES and one of my favorites all time.
I'm interested to see the next NES ranking video there aren't too many game developers left maybe koei or just a general strategy game list
Koei. Brilliant
Yes finally someone who loves super Mario 2!
The colors of the Tetris levels strike an immediate rush serotonin in my brain
I love Pinbot! My mom had a country store back in the 90s. She had Pinbot a bunch of arcade games including Golden Axe, which I got to play for freeeeee lol
The River City ransom games are my favourite series - I'd like to see modern takes on their soccer and volleyball outings.
I wish they would have released the hockey one in the US on the NES, it's just as fun as World Cup
Strange how you did not include Castlevania and Blaster Master, which have aged better with fans than the original company that made them.
Those are Konami and Sunsoft respectively
Do you still have them? That's awesome.
@@starlaw3320 No, they were probably trashed back in the 80's. As when we'd do a large move, my parents would give us a certain number of boxes that had to fit all of our toys in. And anything we couldn't get to fit then had to get thrown away.
Enjoyed this video. I'm a subscriber but it didn't show up till today for some reason. Love this channel and watch it often. Keep the videos coming.
"drunk Power Pad"
I like that. We'd play some Samba de Amigo after a few cold ones.
Actually playing NES emulated quite a bit! Perfectly timed video
Anticipation had the best cover of all times!
Cobra Triangle was one of my favorite games all time. Excellent music. Great gameplay.
Legend of zelda, Punch out, smb 2 and 3 are A+ games
I’m always happy to see Zelda 2 get some love. Maybe it’s my nostalgia, but that’s my favorite game. Good music, great combat. Thank you!
I been waiting YEEAAARSSS foe this one.
…
Okay, maybe more like months…
I feel like there are genres/styles we need need to play again. Antiquated golf games (more Golf than NES Opem) and “Pole Position” style race games are among them.
Caveat of course is if you have heavy nostalgia.
Super Mario 2 and 3 is ma jam!! Awesome vid John! :D
awesome video NES is one of the best, but for new releases i still go for genesis cursed knight, cave story, life on mars...
Kid icarus..it is January 2022 and I just beat this game a month and a half ago on my NES mini and I will continue to beat it at least once a year
I sunk many fun hours into Dragon Warrior! Still holds up! Great Video!
Finally someone puts zelda 2 in a great light and doesnt trash it. 2nd favorite game after tecmo super bowl
Looks like u had a serial killer in the making behind u playing Mario 3 in that arcade 😮
I just picked up a CIB copy of Cobra Triangle during my layover in Dallas, happy to hear it was a good pickup!
That Nintendo Seal of Approval meant more than my parents approval as a child.
I have a lot of nostalgia for Star Tropics. Would be nice to see that IP again
Super Mario Bros 2 is very underappreciated. I like watching your ranking videos (games published by this company). Looking forward to the next one.
Giving Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, and Kirby's Adventure each an S rank just strengthens my respect for you. Bonus for S ranking both LoZ and LoZ2 !!!
I have been waiting for this! So excited!!
Yes! Mario 2 is superior and now we have proof! Thank you John
Fire Emblem Gaiden is too underrated, I know it only officially released in Japan but there's a fan translation for it
Super mario bros 2 unexpectantly packaged with ninga turtles and the nes, best Christmas present ever
Love your ranking videos. You’re one of my favorite UA-camrs. Can’t wait to see you rank more SNES games.
Bonus! The photo of John playing playchoice 10 has none other than a pinbot pinball machine in the background. It really was in every arcade
Dragon Warrior was my favorite game as a kid.
