10:55 micromanaging - They have now implemented UI buttons/hotkeys where you can just go directly to periscope depth, emergency dive, set your power directly to the various speeds, set a course on a bearing etc. Pretty damn good. You also now have crew voices telling you things, confirming your orders and when they are completed etc. They are a bit robotic sounding, but very useful nonetheless.
Also, the disappearing ships aren't a bug. If you lose your 95% firing solution, the 3D image will disappear. It's an understandable thing I guess, but a bit immersion breaking.
0:13 "Command a *nuc-u-ler* submarine." You kinda went George Bush on that pronunciation, Mack
Ladies and gentlemen, WELCOME to my submarine lair... It's long, hard and full of seamen! ... No? Nothing? Not even a titter? Tough sub...
Doctor evil.
I dunno about a submarine but do you wanna see my rocket ship? Its propulsion and forward thrust capabilities are off the charts.
OLD JOKE
i like how there's literally no fish.
I have seen other videos showing there are whales in this sub sim.
They should have used procedural code to make the terrain etc IMO. Would be a lot more interesting and varied.
Your lucky to get an external view at all. Submarines don't have windows.
There's a shitload of tin fish.
I mean, it is made by Killerfish Games.
Mack can you review Verdun? It's always on sale and the developers have been updating the game with free dlc and patches for years. it's a great game since you are very interested in history and WW1.
is it very heavy performance wise?
Lord Zephyros No, you could run the game with any PC pretty much. Lots of graphical settings and can turn gore on and off.
you mean dying simulator
NedYarbNexus So like every war?
yes but it's priority should be to be fun and functional GAME not a carbon copy of a war.
Mack, will Cold Waters help me to prepare for Brexit?
yes. Because its long, black and full of seamen
Wouldn't that have been the future if remain won?
we're all fucked either way
I had to buy one just in case remainders won
Basically Brexit is great if you're an incest inbred who goes to Brean every year for a holiday or other . It's for those who enjoy swimming in boiled piss. Yeah... that's Brexiteers for you. "Our country"... "our flag"... seriously... that small minded? Over a symbol/pretty colours? Wake the fuck up. Face facts. We're on a piece of land, that someone decided to call England. It's a piece of land with other human beings on it. Nothing more, nothing less. All this I'm a patriot... what a load of bollocks. Don't use that to fuel whatever agenda you have. Don't even get me started on all this PC bullshit. Fuck sake... this world... had gone to shit.
In the words of Morpheus from The Matrix... FREE YOUR MIND.
Hey Guys!
A bit of an update on Macks review, as it is more then 8 months old.
As of the 1.09e version the game has now:
- user interface buttons for crew commands (helm, dive and sensor controls),
- a full reference guide within the tactical game to help identify contacts (with sensors and weapon loadouts data),
- neutral (merchants, trawlers, oil rigs) and biological (whales) contacts,
- much less bugs (though there are still some minor ones here and there).
What to come with the 1.1 version (all free of charge):
- two new playable subs (Seawolf and Los Angeles Flight III 688i),
- a brand new South China Sea campaign set in the early to mid 90's (China as a new adversary with about 20 new enemy contacts to sink or run from),
- some new graphics (terrain shader and textures for better visuals and performance, larger cities and air bases).
This game is like Enigma: Rising Tide was to the Silent Hunter series - it is a bit on the arcade side, but IMHO it is still great fun and worth the price. Also the devs are really great, they are listening to the community and also give us free stuff - what is very rare nowadays, so they deserve the support. (No freakin' season passes, DLC's or chopping the game into little pieces for greed.)
Cheers!
I'm not sure i have the patience for this sort of thing, but it's nice to see a game like this, as these kind of games are rare.
Red Storm Rising is a book by Tom Clancy, Mack :P
Actually a really exciting read if you're into that kind of stuff
scott thurlbeck
Hunt for Red October is another good one, though I haven't read a huge amount of his stuff
The game was based on the book. RSR was a classic sub sim
It was Book by Clancy based on table top strategy game called Harpoon and the game was based on the book.
Just what you need Mack! More subs!
lol
That's such a bad pun it's brilliant xD
Richard Whitely would be proud of you.
Lol when O first saw this comment I was trying to think why it has so many likes now I get it
I haven't laughed this hard in long time. Great Review. Thank you.
Jive my man
A few lads from work actually play this (British Submariner). I was thinking about giving it a go. Then we spent a week in the trainer firing weapons and going through the motions, they made jokes about practicing at night in their rooms on Cold Waters... Fucking no chance will I ever play this. Absolute busman's holiday.
But it does look good and it's funny listening to people talk about things like active/passive sonar and layers. Absolutely throbbing though.
I played Red Storm Rising on a Commodore 64 in 1990 and loved it. When I saw a UA-cam video of Cold Waters I knew exactly what I was getting. I usually wait for games to go on sale but with this, I couldn't. A Russian side campaign is rumored.
That was soooooo much fun. I would play for 12 hrs at a time. The book is also my favorite, reading it a few times.
they need to make a ww2 one like this but with battleships.
NedYarbNexus The same developer that made this have made a phone game (very well made let me tell you) about ww2 naval warfare in the atlantic and in the pacific
Like your profile pic, ned.
Hey Mack my wife has blue hair and she thinks I'm a c**t for playing computer games!! Just thought I'd share that with you!
Blue hair is for psychos and feminists. Gl with that woman. Sounds like shes confused about being female. Tell her to get back to her PLACE as a woman and stop trying to be a man.
Its crazy that something as big as a submarine can be stealthy. I guess they have to.
Have you played Battlestations: Pacific? Really good naval/submarine/air combat game from 2009. Cheap as chips today but great fun! Love your honest opinions; keep it up Mack!
Thanks for the WAB Mack! I've never played a 3D submarine game before and this looks interesting!
This looks like my sort of game! Would be really fun on a multi-monitor setup where you can push all of your instruments off to a side monitor, and have the action playing out on your main monitor like a movie.
felt in love with this fucking worth a buy guy :p
he's just awesome.
I knew my sea warfare qualification would came in handy one day ;)
thermal layer is an interface inside the sea (like the air sea interface) which separates two fluids of different densities. Because of the different densities sound travels differently in both regions making sonars very unreliable going through it. It's a bit like the refraction you get when you put a stick into water and it appears to be broken.
way late on this one but not true, it's just water, density increases smoothly as you go down, what happens is that at certain times of day and certain temperatures, the difference in temperature between the surface and the deeper layers creates a point where the speed of sound, which is dependent on both pressure and temperature, first goes down and then back up again, it's that rapid change in the speed of sound due to temperature differential which refracts sound waves.
not modeled in this game but there is a second layer deeper down where debris and dead organic material accumulates because it's neutrally bouyant at that depth, this creates a physical barrier of solid waste partiles which can disrupt sound waves also.
@@doltBmB it is not true so you then justify saying it is actually kind of true? Picnoclines happen due to a lot of of different reasons and they do separate the water into two different nigh imiscible fluids. You can see the effects through SAR images and through the naked eye if you are lucky (I did in an aerial survey I conducted 12 years ago). If the sound speed was the only differentiator, internal waves would not be possible and guidewave sonar would not work. I mean, why is the speed of sound different? What does the temperature change in the water that makes sound behave differently and travel at different speeds in a layer? Why would sound care about temperature? if there is a smooth temperature and density gradient sound would behave similarly in a gradient and oceanic waveguides would not work. There would be no clear separation. There are multiple layers. In the deep ocean there can be 5 layers measured.
@@Heldermaior dangerous waters manual explains it in detail, and I trust sonalysts a lot more than some rando on youtube
@@doltBmB right... I have a PhD in Physical Oceanography but I guess I am wrong.
@@Heldermaior and sonalysts makes the actual software for real world sonars, so you are wrong
"What the fuck are seals gonna do?" HAHAHAHAH came back to this vid just for that comment
Even if i don't like the game I watch your review your hilarious
It’d be fun if this game had a WW2 DLC.… I’ve become quite fascinated with the primitive submarine technology of that era, especially after watching Das Boot.
I absolutely loved playing ‘Red Storm Rising’. I really miss good MODERN sub games.
dude idk if that intro is suppose to be like some ASMR stuff but for some reason i get excited when i hear it
Thank you for the review mack. I've been looking at this one and will pick it up in the future because I trust your reviews.
It all depends what type of layer you have positive over a negative or ISO or negative over positive. Then what type of active transmission you have.
Seems like a hardcore submarine-simulator.
I was on a Fast Attack Submarine (SSN 691 USS Memphis.) I will give this game a try and I will tell you how much BS it is or if it is close.
will await for your first impressions
The larger Trident class submarines that carry our Ballistic missiles are slower and for the most part. The fast attack Submarines are the LosAngeles class and the new Virgina class. The role they play is very broad and a very overlooked tool in our military overviews. They can do Seal team insertions, surveillance, scouting and not only fires Mk.48 ADCAP torpedos but also fires many variants of Tomahawk missiles. For carrier groups you almost always have a submarine close to it.
+Steven
Yes, I want to know if it's accurate as well!
Its more like an action game that has a few elements of the submarine warfare... The devs said it focuses on the "tactical and positioning" elements of this mouse-cat game. The subs are way too agile for their weight and the onboard systems (sonars, radar, active sonar, TMA is non-existant, etc...) are not or very basically modeled.
I believe the best subsim so far is the Dangerous Waters. You gotta work the stations if you want to have a somewhat acceptable firing solution. Would love to have game with that kind of fidelity in the near future.
In defense of the devs, they are a very small team, with no experience with these kind of games but they are nice people and they do listen to the community. They did a few games for android and the Pacific and Atlantic Fleet for PC. Those were turn based tactical games and pretty good ones at that.
+Nagy Renato
Thanks for sharing!
I wish this wasn't an indie game.
Also, great review! I'm glad I found your channel!
Mack you ever played Silent Hunter? well you should try it I think you would enjoy it, I recommend Wolves of the Pacific or Silent Hunter 3.
Dangerous Waters is still in a class of its own. And there you have a crew. The main thing you gotta do is the target motion analyses (TMA). Plus operating the target and firing computer. But other than that you can order courses, speeds and depths, calling out contacts and more (if you wish, it's called _'auto crew'_ ). And you get your "Aye!". ;) It's old but gold.
Great review Mack, totally agree! Icecream men do know everything! :-P Back to the game it is a bit steep for what it is now and alot of wtf moments when you start out but one thing this game does have going for it is it's moddable and subsimers will weave their magic and I reckon in a few months it will be amazing! Also kudos to Killerfish, there's already been 3 patches since launch making improvments (we now have an in game manual that tells you what type of wessel you're looking at :-)) and they're very active on forums answering questions & stuff too... I think there's only 2 devs so good on em... P.s, tip of the day - launch a Moss decoy into their fleet and they'll think it's you and fire torps at (pretend) you and when they go active the torpedo says "no, that's not a submarine" and find the nearest target (not you ha haa!)
you had me at NUCLEAR SUBMARINE lol
Thanks - keep up the good work with your honest reviews!
Nice honest review boss hes not wrong i own it I had to for the first time had to do hardcore reading to understand everything but once it get it you feel like a bad ass till you sink
Any chance for a worth a buy on "serious sam´s bogus detour" (top down shooter)?
aaah PC, the Nerdiest of all Platforms. May that *Never* Change :) !
Game is so good I physically hold my breath when pinged by an enemy sub and running silent.
Just what I needed during breakfast. Quite like the look of this, but I wish they could do realistic explosion modelling on the ships - there's not much going on graphically, it surely isn't that difficult to do.
I can completely relate to playing silent service 30 years ago lol, fighting the Yamato.
Mack what microphone do you use ? Sounds great never ever heard a single bit of background noise , random question ahah
All my specs are on the about page
Hey Mack, nice review of a quite different game this time, thanx! Reminded me the days when I was a subsim fan. Silent Hunter series was the best IMHO and even it is a bit retro today, still would be Worth A Check - I reccomend to try it! :)
Lol. The last time i played a game with a submarine in it.. was like.. 50 years ago. As in Battlefield 1942. Man.. this makes me wanna go back and play some Wake Island or Guadalcanal
I believe the vessels disappear sometimes on screen, because you actually lose your 95% firing solution and the game is trying to represent the fact that you are no longer 95% certain of the vessel's whereabouts. It does seem like a bit of a clumsy way of modelling this loss of intelligence, but I can't really think of a better alternative. The graphics could be a bit better, and they could make the seabed a bit more interesting to look at, but the use of acoustics, thermal layers, and all the related physics is fucking top stuff.
Very good review, dont forget to support this channel in Patreon! This is one of the few channels that deserves it, since youtube fucked him over recently.
Still have my fold out sheets from C64 Silent Service. Well worth a dabble. Great review Mack. #Nostalgia
Mack whats your opinion on black females being playable on the nazi side in ww2 multiplayer?
seems totally realistic
TBH it's everywhere now, the UK is one of the worst places for all that kind of stuff, history does not matter anymore as it's offensive to the fragile people.
Hurray for the pussification of society
Mack don't you think you are not helping a more bullshit free society by constantly censoring some obvious to everyone swears?
Makes sense seeing how there were actually black Nazis
Excellent review! Fantastic!
Fantastic video Mack. You are honestly the best video game youtuber in the world
it looks like 688(i) Hunter/Killer from year 1997. Which was absolutely fantastic. Same game mechanics and so on. Thanks for the review mack.
Hey Mack! I was wondering if you've seen War of Rights yet? I apologize if anyone's already asked you! I'd love to see a vid of you playing it. Thank you for Cold Waters review: I appreciate your attention to detail!
The worse thing is that they make it actively difficult for modders to introduce new models and stuff
Excellent
God you're funny. Red Storm was probably my favorite modern sub SIM way back, I shall give this a try.
There are some proper belly laughs to be had from this episode. :)
I'm a former ASW operator and this game is surprisingly realistic. At least as much as possible. A lot of this technology is still classified secret or higher, but they do a good job of simulating the acoustics detection and classification. They've simplified it quite a bit.
I heard somewhere that magnets maybe the future of detecting subs
Magnetic detectors have been used for decades
There are planes in Cold Waters with magnetic detection. If you get noticed close enough to an airbase they'll send them out to sweep the water surface and try and get a fix on you. In deep waters no problem, below about 600ft depth they're unlikely to find you, but if you're close to the coast, you're toast.
Have you played any of the silent hunter games Mack? I used to love playing silent hunter III as a kid, great game.
Waiting for this to go on sale! 29,99 seems a bit too much. Can't wait :D
Great review Mack!
SnopFop - TheSkogemann It's 37 now... 😂😂
Its 39.99 now
I'm shocked you've not played Red Storm Rising. it was AMAZING!!!!
You should check out Silent Hunter for the ultimate Sub sim.. No guided torps. No thermal layers.. Lots of patience required.
Quite an informative and funny review.. Thanks
This game, but VR multiplayer like the recent star trek game would be amazing!
Excellent review Mack.
I played Tom Clancy's SSN in the early 2000's. This game reminds me of that game. They are kind of similar. Both are based on Red Storm Rising. Just SSN has the Chinese as the enemy.
Which would you recommend. This or silent hunter 5?
Both are good options. Personally I prefer the Silent Hunter series as you can role play that one since you can walk around inside, and outside, the ship and control each station. That being said, I prefer Uboat over Silent Hunter. It's more of an updated version and is still being worked on and improved.
As always Mack, good review
Can you review Ravenfield, and love the video Mack as always
Was on the fence till the end. My wife has denim hair.
I played Silent Service on the Amiga. Didn't know it was originally on the C64.
Thanks, Mack, I'll give it a look!
So basically Sid Meier's: Submarine warfare
I can tell it's a Killerfish game, they have the same sinking indicator and sound effect as Atlantic and Pacific Fleet.
His comments made me think of Ironwolf VR. I've had it on my wish list debating purchase, even though it has very positive reviews. Has anyone tried that one?
Confused ! So what happened to the ice cream man ?Great video very entertaining and far more entertaining than any of the shit on TV nowadays !
Think he is doing time
Where are the Jane's sims these days?
We have far better sims now, like DCS world.
wow, thx for this hint!
can I play this on surface pro 4 i5 4gbRAM (HD 520)
If you liked this, you'd be interested in Jane's Combat Simulations: 688(I) Hunter/Killer. It's older but aims to be more realistic.
A game like this would be so good if it were kinda more like blackwake the way it played. We need more games where it's not 1 dude controller a whole huge vehicle or object.
So will there be an EU update so we can go out sink French Trawlers and make them wait 48hrs before they can retaliate.
I think I've been in that phase for about ten years, when's it end Mack?
I understand it's a game that really needs some instruction before you can b gud at it, but unfortunately some stuff you just have to learn and memorize the hard way. E.g. at how deep do you have to be before you start cavitating at, say, 15, 20 or 25 knots? You just have to get a feel for it.
If you liked this one Mack, you should have a look at "Dangerous Waters".
Your drinking phase took 30 years ?!
We need submarine vs submarine multiplayer...
I'd love to see a WWII U-boat version of this.
i hope you found "uboat" :)
This reminds me of DEFCON, which you need to review.
Thanks, Mack!
Review "Project Reality"
best review since..
lol Red Storm Rising...on C64 it took something like 40min to load from the cassette station...but it was worth it.
this is very tactical to play...you make one mistake you can be dead really fast...
Silent Hunter 3 with GWX mod is epic!
I remember that I had a Tom Clancy submarine game.
Uboat is a great gamea well.
Loved Silent Service.
That's correct Mack the time when you felt like a bag of washing and your mouth tasted like an ashtray oh btw nice review 😄
Fantastic I love the game I'm still totally shit at it and sink stuff my by fluke but I'm sure in time I'll get there
Hi Werner Herzog, I did not know you also reviewed video games.
