I gave this game a proper go. I set myself up in the farmstead. Killed many bears and wolves, even learnt to shoot the bow well. Had a tonne of meat stored outside in the snow, and explored a lot of the other areas from that HQ. Survived for 80 days. Went to the coast for some light adventure. Ate a mouldy candy bar. Died in my sleep.

-If controller selected in settings use action wheel and one button multi function setup
-If keyboard selected use the basic tried and true survival game keyboard layout
Then everyone could enjoy optimal controls everywhere, I haven't made a video game but I could program that up pretty easily. Oh and even if you can't jump to anywhere you should still have it, hell I jump in games just to alleviate boredom during long travels.
Start a fire next to any carcass before you harvest it if it's gonna take a while or if it's too cold outside. Also don't have a flare in your hand if your not using it to prevent accidentally lighting it.
I uninstalled after I knocked a rabbit out with a stone following several attempts but before I could pick it up ,it jumped up and merrily hopped away while I starved to death.
I have bought this game back in 2014 and played it for a couple dozen hours because it felt rather repetitive once you knew the mechanics and the map. Since story mode came out i've been having a blast, but Mack... everything you say is absolitely true. It's very entertaining but there are huge negatives. I wish you would have thumbed it down because of the sheer amount of fanboism it gets simply because it made it out of Early Access and because the devs can't take criticism on the actual forums. H-Tap Mack has some good points, like you can't jump, no multy-tasking, I got used to it and I can live with it, not so bothered but I just love this game. I really wasn't ever interested in story mode, and I got even more than what I expected from this game way way back when I bought it, so I feel you, H-Tap.
Not sure if they changed the game since this review but a few things he said here are incorrect.
1. “You can’t multi-task” This is completely false, I usually use 5 fires cooking 10 items simultaneously and will even take time to sharpen my knife/axe. You are not forced to watch the fire boil your water
2. “You can start an action and just be forced to watch your character die” With the exception of sleeping every single action has a cancel button. You can watch your condition falling and stop harvesting that deer. Fortunately you won’t lose progress as the next time you go to harvest it there will be less time & meat on the corpse as you took some of it already.

I was really looking forward to this. . The big no-go for me is the lack of multi-tasking and being able to die while doing an activity since you cannot stop it. I remember watching some videos years ago and wished the game had this.

Apperantly Its for muh "Immersion" as the devs say which Is funny cuz It does the opposite. Game would'v been unplayable for me If they didn't make an option to turn It off. They made an option for It because apperantly ppl that didn't like It were automatically diagnosed with "carpel tunnel syndrome" which Is retarded.. they really dislike criticism to the point where Raph (the game director) said he's not going on reddit anymore because of how much negative feedback there Is (which was very consturctive). Played since 2014 and gotta say the game took some steps backwards especially with the cartographer update.
I think it is to simulate looking through draws and that. But yes click and hold when not needed is pointless and annoying.

I've never played the game, how am I supposed to know? It was also more so a comment on this "trend" of push and hold functionality that people seem to think is good design.
Devs just want to give you carpal tunnel by making you hold a button for no reason.

I'm sad as well, I bought this as soon as I saw the WAB in 2014, then I played this again today and was honestly horribly disappointed.
Why'd I wait? Lol. Why'd the price go up? Lmao. I hate how the devs seem like they're money grabbing.
I wonder if they improved the crawl speed and the run distance. Even my fat behind can run more than 20 yards without needed 8 hours of sleep!!!
The click and hold to open containers really is a bad change that I wish they would revert. It worked fine before, click to open and search. Hold to activate items (giving you a chance to not use them).
Dying while field dressing and butchering a kill can be addressed by building a fire beside it before starting and you can also interrupt it if you hear the weather pick up. However I fully agree I wish you could multitask more. If you are boiling water why can't you be cooking meat as well etc.

Good, I'll have to explore the options more. I haven't played the story mode yet. Been waiting for the update but finishing Wasteland 2 before getting bogged down in another game :)
Is wasteland 2 any good?
It still has a few bugs and issues but nothing game breaking I've found so far. Story is pretty good and there is that old Fallout 1-2 dark humor. I bought it during the summer sale and have so far found it absolutely worth the money spent. And while the game doesn't force Ironman on you if you choose to play that way it can be brutal as it's very easy to get your squad in over their head and lose people if you don't plan ahead or just accept some encounters as too hard for you at the moment.

Lighting a fire in this game really is shit.
The new UI sucks and holding the mouse button to open shit is just boring. One click to search like it used to be is enough, should work for consoles too. But who am I to say.
I just finished Episode 1 of the story, and it's not that good. Hopefully it will be a bit more "sandboxy" later on, we'll see.
The sandbox mode is what you want really.

you are going to base your opinion on what this guy says, sure a review is supposed to give you somewhat information about a game, but you can get the game on steam. play for an hour and get a feel for yourself, and if not happy get a refund. i mean that's not that hard.

I've seen this review before, I followed TLD since the beginning (pc) So atmospheric I can rememberfeeling that cold... out there in the snow ( which is strange coz I live in Barcelona) In a nutshell I bought the Ps4 and finally bought it today, I'm not bothered about story mode. Hey! has it got any better sincc release? Please review again mack! And probably both occurring simultaneously. I hear we'll be getting a much needed reprieve for 2018, expect to see the likes of more alluring prodding such as "Anal Quickie!!" and some such, in lieu.

Most of these games have been in EA for more than a year and have no anticipated release dates. The survival genre is infamous for this.

Giving credit to someone isn't a flaw. Animals (in real life too) that follow a pattern of where they go, isn't a flaw. You having to do tasks in order to gain the trust of an old lady *that doesn't like people* isn't a flaw.
I have a feeling thay this guy loved the game thus why he is giving the most critical review- indeed devs added waay too much unnecessarily stuff, or didn't really try to improve what could have improved.
Starting the fire, for example. Why are we always resorted to use only one tinder plug? Can we dry wood? Build wood structure for better air flow?
Instead, devs kept the same thing for 3 years. Never changed.

I found this game like three weeks ago and I really liked the story mode. I understand that at the time of this review there were only two episodes while I got to play 4. Indeed the first episode is kinda boring, and the NPC take forever to utter their lines, so I almost fell asleep listening to them. But in Episode 3 and 4 things were much much better and way more dynamic. The jumping over simple obstacles is still a problem though. At the start I also had to google how to do simple things like how to start a fire for example or make tea - the game doesn't teach you this. If you can get over these initial problems the game is amazing.

I just... cannot even fathom why you wouldn't let a pc player map all of their keys to anything they wanted. It's not that hard of a concept, the console players can keep their weird ass control scheme - all you have to do for a PC player is let them map their keys. That's it. They're happy after that. My god.
Also the UI was better before - as someone who does graphic design professionally I think the buttons are way too big and in your face. Makes it feel like preschooler's first survival game with buttons that big.
I really like the story mode, so I totally disagree, for me it is really mysterious which makes me curious going forward what I will find or who I will encounter.
I have been on the fence about this game since your first review and have waited and waited for it to get its story mode but I can now tell it is not for me. thanks for another review that has saved me some cash :)

Harsh but fair. There are many problems they should have addressed before making Story Mode. I also hate the "pathing" issues. I've died a few times trying to run away from a wolf only to get stuck on a 2inch "edge"

The "console wheel" or commarose as its called in the Battlefield series was the best thing about PC BF and was annoyingly removed when BF went multi plat as it was too hard to use on console. So maybe "console wheel" isn't the best name for it. Nor is it even a console specific thing at all...
Hey Mac, not sure if you go thru older reviews, but it looks like Devs have released a "Redux" update which claims to fix a lot of the negativity. Not only that, but its like $8 USD... Think I may give it a go now.

I checked out as soon as I saw the QTE button mashing bullshit. :/ Then everything else you showed designed to waste my time from the click and hold circles to the RNG fire starting.. holy shit! I'm not getting any younger. Why do games feel the need to make me wait for no reason other than "because"?

My biggest gripe are the wolves... why on earth are they THAT aggressive? I mean Jesus they assault you straight at sight. This is just not how a wolf would behave oO
Yeah i realise this... i can´t seem to get over it though. It sort of kills the mood for me. Sure, make them aggressive whenever i get near their prey or cups. The game is deadly enough as it is^^
In the "open world" mode, you can play so the animals aren't aggressive like that so it's just you vs. weather.
Do they hunt in packs yet or hunt other creatures? They were pretty static in old versions. I'd think that if you were making a nature survival game you'd want to get animal behaviour right.

They will hunt other animals in addition to hunting you. They will also try to find you if you are wounded or if you have meat on you. I love the trick of chasing a Deer into running towards a wolf, shoot the wolf once it kills the deer and it's like killing two animals for the price of one bullet (or arrow).

Paw Zyl Story mode was a disappointment but everyone still loves sandbox mode anyways and the reason why you would buy the game.

Played it already, it was alright. Not gonna waste my time to wait for a fire to MAYBE light after waiting for 20 seconds. Doesn't seem fun or even necessary in any way for the gameplay.
Console wheel works fine on PC, what a stupid petty point. Great game, but it.
In fairness, unless your fire starting chance doesn't increase over time any more, it really isn't as easy as you'd think to light a fire with newspaper, it burns very quickly and often won't get everything else up to temperature to keep burning, frozen damp twigs. Proper firewood is generally sun or kiln dried for that very reason. Fuel logs should light immediately though
Might give this a go when it's ten quid or so. Can't see it being a game I'd put more than a few hours into.
I had to watch this a second time to really get what was going on here - it's a shame that Mack has such a busy reviewing schedule that he can't take the time to really Git Gud at this game, because IMHO many of his complaints come down to his not playing at a Gud Gamer level.

Lighting a Flare accidentally while trying to Loot: Why is he looting containers while holding an unlit flare in his hand? Is that at all realistic? Wouldn't you put that down or away so you could use both hands to paw through that desk? Or would you limit yourself to using one hand so you could continue to hold that unlit flare for no apparent reason? There's a Holster button for a reason Mack.
Firestarting: Cardboard matches give you the worst chance of lighting the fire. Use Wooden matches or a Firestriker (if you have it) to increase your odds. Reclaimed Wood gives a terrible chance of starting the fire. Using Sticks would have immediately improved your chances. Did you have Accelerant? According to the Inventory screen @ 8:30 you had THREE CANS of it (and Wooden Matches). So why weren't you using them?
Actions on the Radial menu are all replicated with re-mappable hotkeys. Mack had to use the Radial menu because he didn't have the time or inclination to learn them (or remap them if necessary).
Also (as others have mentioned) there **is** a map - and you have to draw it in yourself a bit at a time by looting charcoal from fireplaces and sketching your surroundings.
Look I get that Mack has buttloads of games to review. I don't expect him to put dozens of hours into every game to really Git Gud at every single one. Again tho, it's a shame that the stuff he complains about in this review are the result of him not having a deep enough understanding of the fairly complex game mechanics at work here. It's not an FPS. Playing it like an FPS will lead to dissatisfaction.

No need for a story? The pre-alpha was for the supporters who wanted to play it as Hinterland build the game. Honestly, they [Hinterland] created this game around the story of your player and what happens. They were never "focused" on sandbox. and honestly, they really never should. And not to mention every hater of this game either 1. Didn't play past the tutorial 2. didn't bother to look at the *crafting* tab for how to make rose hip tea 3. have shit grammar like you 4. went off this "critic review" and believed that the story was shit because "aww Hinterland doesn't hold your hand through everything" or "aww I have to figure something out for myself" or (my favorite) "I have to *gain* the trust of an old lady that *hates* people and *hates* interaction with outsiders." Maybe try playing past the tutorial, or better yet, actually play the game yourself.
IMHO Story should have been just an amped-up version of the Nomad challenge that already exists. Give you a start point, a destination, and some "recommended" (or maybe even required) places for you to visit so you don't just beeline it from one end of a map to the other.
People paid for story mode and was always the developer's plans, sandbox mode was originally just for testing but grew popular.
honestly i don't think the story is really all that bad, is it top notch writing, it doesn't claim to be. but as he was saying, it doesn't teach you how to make rose hip tea, i figured that shit out in 1 go, boil the water sanitize the water. at rosehips and boil it tada, you don't need to be a fucking rocket scientist, he's just hating on things to hate on them.
believe it or not, the wheel works better on pc as opposed to console. the mouse is still far more precise.

I've been waiting for this re-WAB for quite a while. Thanks for the honest review, Mack. Developers and fanboys pretend that this is the best game ever and that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. But that is far from the truth. There are several things I don't like.
The first, as you mentioned, is the lack of multitasking. In real life (and this game, supposedly, simulates real life) you can repair your clothes while the water boils, or sharpen your knife while the meat is cooking. In TLD you get locked in a loading screen. I don't have to stare at the kettle while making tea, I can do other things in that period of time.
The second is the fact that the devs were lying about zombies. There are zombies in this game... they are just disguised as wolves. Ok, let's suppose that the wolves don't behave like in real life because of this geomagnetic disaster, which screwed up their brains and behaviour. But does this improve the gamplay, does this make the game more fun? No. The wolves are an annoyance and a frustration. After a week of in-game time the map is spammed so full of wolves that fighting wolves requires a big portion of your time. I guess with this the devs are disguising the fact that they are either unable to program a proper AI for wolves or were just too lazy to do that.
It would have been more fun and immersive if the wolves appeared in packs of 5-10 animals, roamed the map for a couple of days and then disapeared for a while, and you would have to avoid getting noticed by them. Right now they behave almost exactly like brainless zombies in other survival games. They are almost as invincible as zombies as well. You can one-shot them only if you shoot them in the head. If you hit the chest they are still able to charge at you and attack you. I would like to see that happening in real life.
My third gripe are the hunting/combat mechanics. The only way to fight a wolf is to wait till it gets on top of you and then have an MMA wrestle match with it. In real life I would make a spear and try to stab a wolf if it gets too close. Or hit it with the axe. Or stab at it with the knife. The rabbit hunting is quite ridiculous too. You can only catch them with a snare. Ok, they kinda fixed it in the latest version where you can throw stones at them (I dare you to find stones in two feet deep snow). But still, why can't I hurl a piece of wood or my axe at them? I don't quite buy the bow either. It is not that easy to make a proper hunting bow. Throwing spears would be easier to make.
Fourth is the fact that you can make a coat only from wolfskin, pants only from deerskin and mitens only from rabbitskin. In real life I wouldn't freeze my hands off just because I couldn't make rabbitskin mittens. I would make mittens from whatever materials I can get.
It's not that I totally dislike this game but it could have been much more. My hopes and expectations were very high when I bought it in early acces. I feel a bit disappointed with it. In many in-game situations I can feel the "that'll do" factor. I would still recommend it but not for the price 30 euros. I think it's worth 15, 20 at best.
Some valid points in your review. Few clarifying points though. The sandbox has permadeath but story mode allows you to go back to the last checkpoint or save if you die. If you use twigs instead of reclaimed wood you can increase your fire starting chances. For indoors they should almost always be 100% but have you ever tried to light a fire when it is wet or -20C? It can certainly take some time even with newspaper. You can stop most actions by hitting escape on PC (like eating, drinking, harvesting animals). This will prevent premature death if you tried to do a 4 hour task in freezing weather. The collecting quests were tedious for sure.

Ticks all the boxes but at last the episodes are only for the shitty story mode. Imagine you're just at the verge of dying from a cold, you just barely reached a warm house but then a message pops up "Sorry. Can't enter. This area is locked content for episode 3. Another 26.99 pounds, please!"
its not like that. Play it and you'll find out. Plus this is the original survival game, and i think the first to come out of early access. And future episodes are free they just wanted to get content out to us already.

Good IndieGames 0:30 I beg to differ... It's a first person game. It might not be much of a "shooter", but you control a person, doesn't matter what camera angle, a person should still be able to jump. Regardless of game genre.

izihbo This is supposed to be a realistic game and I don't think we jump knees high while moving through the air in real life to climb things. Not including jumping was a delibarate choice.
Snow is too deep to jump on.
Good IndieGames While on (deep) snow you're unable to jump, I get it, I live in Norway, we have tons of snow, I should know, but when I'm inside - I can totally jump ;)

No need for a story? The pre-alpha was for the supporters who wanted to play it as Hinterland build the game. Honestly, they [Hinterland] created this game around the story of your player and what happens. They were never "focused" on sandbox. and honestly, they really never should. And not to mention every hater of this game either 1. Didn't play past the tutorial 2. didn't bother to look at the *crafting* tab for how to make rose hip tea 3. have shit grammar like you 4. went off this "critic review" and believed that the story was shit because "aww Hinterland doesn't hold your hand through everything" or "aww I have to figure something out for myself" or (my favorite) "I have to *gain* the trust of an old lady that *hates* people and *hates* interaction with outsiders." Maybe try playing past the tutorial, or better yet, actually play the game yourself.

Any consolized game and games with DLC should be treated worse than ET.Payday 2 was a great game and I loved it but now it has 30-40 fucking DLC!Sure you now have to buy the whole package for $45 which includes everything but it doesn't undo the 4 fucking years of DLC!They even had microtransactions!Honestly,fuck consoles and console players,fuck controllers,fuck third-person,fuck DLC,fuck microtransactions,fuck games intentionally broken and fuck walking simulators!The gaming industry has never been in such a shit state since the crash when it comes to actual games!
Not sure if it has been asked, or indeed criticised, what are the graphics like? In 2018 I believe you can buy a 1070 or a 1080 for twopence. Your eyes should be assaulted by a myriad of vibrant colours in 4K IPS 100% Adobe 400 nits screen, and the sounds should be of similar quality. Your GTX 1080 should be burning 180W and provide all the heating in the room for the cold winter months! And this is before we even talk about gameplay! Just wondering...
A better game would have been "The Long Family". Its about a small desolate village in the middle of nowhere, where no one ever from the outside finds its way in there. Pure survival, You, Nature and the Others...
