its to space out the runners at the start so less tripping happen buis its also stupid because the teams on the inside line have a stupidly large advantage

It kind of reminds me of distance race on the track where the runners can not break to the inside after the curve.
Did something happen to his foot during the race? It seemed like his form was struggling near the end, almost as if he becamw injured
