All the tips mentioned:
1. Do not use heat. Avoid as much as possible
2. If you use a blow dryer, put a diffuser on the end
3. Don't pull your hair tightly back very often
4. Don't wash your hair everyday
5. Wait 48 to 72 hours before washing hair after perm
6. Wait at least 2 weeks before coloring/chemically treating hair again
7. Use a deep conditioner
8. Comb hair when it's wet
9. Use curly hair products when hair is still damp
10. Keep hands off of hair after applying product on it
11. Sleep with a silk scarf
12. Sleep with silk pillows
Additional Tips not mentioned:
1. Use sulfate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner.
2. Don't use alcohol based products like hairspray because it'll dry out hair! Instead you can use a combination of wax and serums to help hold curl. You just put a little wax and serum into your palm and rub it together and distribute or define the curl as well.
3.It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to come back to the salon 4-6 weeks after your perm to get a trim

I'm a cosmetologist, and this was extremely accurate. Lol. I would recommend to not use a lot of alcohol based products like hairspray because it'll dry out hair! +lucy lopez Yup! Unfortunately with curly hair, the more you touch it, the more frizzy it gets. I flip my hair from side to side a lot so sometimes the frizz is something I just have to deal with because I can't stop lol

I've had a perm for 7 months, I touch it a lot, I curl it a lot to make more volume, and I blow dry it all the time. I would wash it every day, and I wear it pulled back. my hair is still fine. BTW I had spiral perm.
Amber lona yes you can but it’s not recommended, if you do what she has done to her hair it will get damaged. I would recommend waiting a few months before even adding heat
My hair is hip length. It was so pretty and healthy, last Friday I had a spiral perm put in and hate it. 😔
It's dry and frizzy and it takes me an hour to get the tangles out.
@@msmorningstar2116 Try to find some styling wax or an alcohol free style cream. this can help with the frizz and help define the curl and be patient. My stylist told me back in the 80s that is was okay to get a perm after coloring (lifted color, turned brown hair to blond) from a box. My hair was like gum after the perm. I learned my lesson and I didn't go back to that stylist.
The stylist that just gave me the perm said do not put color on before a perm, the perm chemicals will strip the added color right on out.

Using a pick instead of a brush or regular comb helps a lot as well. I found that when started using a pick it kept my curls from looking broken or stringy

You can also do the plopping method while it's still damp and has your product in it. I use a tshirt or tshirt towel for drying after a shower or a silk sleep cap or scarf (like she has) to sleep in to have well defined curls!

I just got my first perm today and I wanted the loose beach wave/curl look but it's super duper curly like poodle like. I went to my regular salon and my main girl doesn't do perms so she passed me over to one who has been doing them for years and she's their go to perm person. I went in for a consultation and she said it was doable on my hair and that it was healthy, and I showed her the exact look I wanted: the big loose curls. She said that is doable without a doubt. Two days later (today) I get it done and my hair ended up being so thin she didn't use two boxes of the perm solution like she said but then she put in this other chemical in my hair without telling me....which doubled my price quote that she originally told me. She also ended up trimming more than an inch off because my ends now were damaged and it has taken me 4 years to get to the length it's at now due to health reasons and my hair is now super short with the curl I want to cry. When it was all said and done, and she took it out I got these thin, scrunchy ringlets and she put mousse in my hair and it's now hard as a rock on the top and I CAN'T SHOWER. I just want to know if my hair will loosen up, if I will end up with the look I planned on and hoped for or if this was just a waste of $200. I was really excited to get it, and my friend got a perm recently with the look I wanted but her hair is thicker and shoulder length and I don't know if my hair didn't take the perm as well as my friends hair. But I am a little disappointed to say the least. I just hope I am not over reacting. And my hair is so thin....and it has so much mousse in it that it looks wet and I look like a trashy meth addict. If this was the look I was going for I'd be over the moon.

Excellent tips! comedy keeps videos more interesting and entertaining. great job! I have naturally wavy hair and considering a loose barrel roll style perm . I have found trying curling mouse such as herbal essence and Loreal curling mouse works well and smells greAt! especially, if the person wants to see what what they look like if they got a perm

I usually comb my permed hair in the morning with a big comb and spray the lower part with water. Then I squeeze it with a towel and let it air dry. This gives me nice curls every morning.

You can blow out (with a round brush) a perm and in fact some of them look fantastic like that. They just give a lot more body to curls. It doesn't need to be damaging if you hold the dryer at the correct distance. A good hairdresser who does perms well can perm bleached hair that is healthy. It just needs a different pre treatment. Bleach strips hair of everything inc protein which is what gives hair curl so it tends to curl randomly in every direction unless the stylist accounts for this and knows from experience what is going to happen. There are such stylists out there you just have to find them.

I got a perm about 1 week ago and the second day of having it my hair only looked wavy. I went back to the salon to see why it happened, my stylist said since I had such thick hair my hair was being weighed down because of how heavy it was. So I ended up doing it again two days ago and she used smaller rods. But I also want to say my hair before my perms was super straight. So that was also behind the reason of it not quite working. The first time I got it I also noticed a few days after my hair was very dry she recommended putting products that moisturize my hair. This was very different for me because having super straight hair at the beginning I wouldn't use products because It naturally looked like I had straightened it with a straightening iron. Good luck to anyone who is getting a perm!
As soon as I got home most of my hair strands were straight... will they stay straight?

I really want pretty curls with lots of volume. but so many youtubers have very flat slightly wavy curls. I'm nervous mine won't turn out. (not talking about your curls)
+Emily Duncan very understandable for your concerns! The best advice I could give is to shop around different stylists. Ask to see if they have pictures of their work, that way you can see what the curls come out looking like. Everyone's hair is different, but seeing pictures of their work should give you a good idea what yours would turn out like
Unfortunately, this is not really accurate. I've done my perm at the stylist where three of my friends had it done before. They all still have super curly hair, and mine still has volume, but is wavy, not curly. By the way your video is really helpful, I've also heard that some women wash the hair out with beer....That kind of keeps curls curly:)))
It also depends on the styling method and products you use. When I first got mine it looked wet but two days later I washed it, put in some product and used a diffuser a bit, and it looked great. Soft, bouncy curls with a little bit of a Tori Kelly vibe.
Emily Duncan i have a curly perm wit volume. Wat u want to do is wait like 3 days for the hair to just get used to the curls nd then use a comb to seperate ur curls. Itll make it look fuller
You can get tighter perms i think they have different patterns you can chose from..

I just got a perm maybe one week ago and it often looks like I have dreadlocks, but I have never dyed my hair or something to my hair! But my hair is really long so I don't really know. Question. My hair is down to my booty and I got a perm yesterday. It was very curly all over when she did it at the salon but a few hours later I noticed the curls straightening out. I texted my hairdresser and she said it's normal and will curl back up when I wash it in a few days. Does anyone else have this problem?

Soooooooooo many articles tell me NOT to dye my hair, & one of my best friends (who's a hairdresser) said it probably would do a number on my hair because I dye it, so I'm kind of questioning taking the plunge. I probably just need to get a consultation first. I never, ever blow dry my hair. I might use a flat iron twice a year. I use a pick to brush my hair when it's wet instead of a hair brush. My hair is fine, but there's lots of it (my profile pic was after my midlife crisis where I hacked my hair off & instantly regretted it. It's long again.). So I do box dye my hair every couple months to cover grays, but other than that, I do nothing by way of styling to damage it. But it's just the whole fact I box dye it. I love curls. I had a perm as a kid (other than the two body perms that fell right out), but the hairdresser made me look like a poodle instead of the pictures I showed her. Anyway, my hair grows quickly, so I suppose it will always grow out (eventually), right?

Thank you so much for this. I have straight- fine- life less hair and I got my first perm a week ago. I have noticed I always get (dreadlocks) under my hair closest to my scalp in the back. I don’t know how to manage this!!! I DID condition it in the shower and used a pick to get those suckers separated lol but after waiting a few days like 3-4 to wash again my hair looks like a rats nest. It loses its defined curls- looks frizzy as F and the dreadlocks are back. Any suggestions? Sorry if this has been addressed before.
