What I've learned from what happen. Don't change engine mid development, open world and mmo design will burn all your time and money, having an actual idea of a minimum viable product is invaluable.
What I've learned from Wha Happen? is to set my expectations for Metroid Prime 4 very low and hope I get pleasantly surprised, but expect the worst. =/
Don't forget the rule of "Not splitting the team up mid-development"
"Communication between team members is vital."
Management sells unrealistic expectations. Developers suffers crunch hell.
I learned that Sega as a publisher is even more hilariously incompetent than I originally thought
I'm amazed Sega's still alive after so many, many bad decisions in their long career, like, even Capcom has been on the verge of bankruptcy.
@@TexasHollowEarth I'm not saying Sega's never made good games (this is coming from a Sonic fan), but their track record shows they've made a TON of bad decisions.
SEGA, by that I mean SEGA of Japan, pretty much makes all of their money from their arcade business, I think. If true, then whatever loss they make in the console market is inconsequential to them.
@Re Up ...how do they only make back 24 million out of 3.5 billion in revenue what
Square and Konami manage to bring in less and still have higher profit than them???
@@RandomBrick13 Well, have you seen how many What Happened videos involve Sega and huge investments in untrustworthy parties? That's a pretty good start.
I remember reading somewhere that the Japanese government quite actively discourage companies from bankruptcy. There are lots of zombie companies with poor productivity and profitablity propped up by government and creditors.
"You're basically inheriting a mess."
Well, I'm gonna be using that quote.
If I ever have kids, that's the first thing I'll tell 'em.
@@thegodforger923 yes, when entering the basement...
There is no game company quite as baffling as Sega. It's feels like they actively want every IP they own have to be hanging by a thread at all times. I think they just get a thrill out of almost killing their company every so often.
Shinobi just lay down and let Gaiden completely sweep the ninja market, too. As someone who never played NG but grew up with the ol 6-Pack, it makes me wonder why aside from Sonic and finally Streets of Rage after a long wait, those series are just nonexistent today when all those games were straight bangers. I don't even like racing games much but Super Hang-On should be up there with Gran Turismo, if Sega weren't so weird about branching out.
@@tehbeernerd they make a lot of money out of them, also the re-releases for mobile too
@@Majinhero There's also the Hatsune Miku games and everything they get from Atlus.
@@Majinhero They also own Atlus and the Hatsune Miku games, that probably works as a nice cushion
@@5kndnumbah Gotta say, buying Atlus was probably the best business decision Sega made in their entire history. Nothing but cash cows over there.
"The [Japanese] Company wanted to broaden it's appeal to western markets"
When Matt listed the "Wha Happun staples" in the beginning, this should've been in there.
The answer should always just be "Make a good game" and maybe "Just don't be overly, overtly based in Japanese culture? Maybe?"
Idk. Monster hunter world was somewhat made with the intentions of appealing a little more to western markets, it looks like it doing really well. Even if I'm not a fan of everything that was changed for world, its core is still there and it changed the right things to get mass appeal. I'm sure capcom is happy anyways.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu "I mean Capcom seems to actually know what they're doing."
Not during the PS360 generation. Remember Bionic Commando Dreadlocks Edition? Or Dark Void? Or Lost Planet 2 and 3? Or DmC? They were in a REAL bad place for a while there thanks to their futile attempt to appeal to the west.
SEGA's originally American though?
@@TexasHollowEarth tldr you were Filtered
"What *didn't* happen" would be a better title for this one. Jesus, I feel bad for the guys at Secret Level...
@treeghettox i don't know if I'd call the original Golden Axe games "skill based". They were pretty difficult in the sort of unfair arcade-style way.
@@tigerfestivals5137
They were definitely unfair and only really beatable by using all kinds of exploits. Especially the first one on the Mega Drive.
@treeghettox I think a GA RPG that's more advanced than the Game Gear and Master System could be interesting. I think an open world action-based game would have been better for the first game in the rebooted series due to to the earlier games being scrolling beat-'em-ups for the most part though.
The concept of the game sounded really cool and it’s a shame it didn’t come out as intended, I guess you could say Horizon Zero Dawn is the closest thing to what Beast Riders should have been.
I love Horizon Zero Dawn but I can’t say it really gave me golden axe vibes. I guess the mounting of animals that are initially enemies and using enemies animals to attack enemies is kinda like mounting a fallen enimies mount and attacking their allies with it in Golden Axe in a very loose sense
@@alistair4909 wasn't really comparing it or saying Horizon Zero Dawn was a rip off of Golden Axe Beast Riders, just saying Horizon is possibly the closest thing to what Beast Riders should have been with an emphasis on open world, beasts to fight and a female protagonist. Just a odd little observation I noticed that's all.
PrinceLynxie I got you. Now that I think about it I would be down if Sega decided to make a game like Horizon but with the Golden Axe ip
@@alistair4909 oh same here, at best we will get a Golden Axe game like the old games in the style of Streets of Rage 4 and Sonic Mania
I remember some of the previews for this game and sending Golden Axe into the 3D world, I was really excited. It wasn't touched on here, but I seem to remember there being character creation or at least customization, leading me to think of it as the Golden Axe world as an RPG. Just incredibly disappointing on what it turned into.
17:03. This quote is really enlightening, it makes me sympathize with those guys a lot. Imagine working under those awful 7-days-a-week conditions just to push out a product that everyone will hate, it must be soul crushing. Since the publishers don't give a fuck and the fans hate them for delivering a bad game, the only ones who can truly understand their struggles are their fellow developers. Tough stuff.
God, hearing that a franchise essentially died due to mismanagement, poor planning and over ambition is bad enough. But to hear the IRON MAN GAME was a factor?
That game is terrible! That Golden Axe died for it is just... sad.
I can't imagine working on a game for so long, going through crunch time that bad, only for all your ideas to be scrapped and the Game ending up failing.
*That is some strong deep mental health shit I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy...*
That pretty much happen with Superman 64, the original idea for the game was an open world game where you solve quests as Superman but Warner bros hated the idea of an open world game and for Superman to have all powers from the start.
My husband worked in the industry for a while, and although he was hardcore into games since he was a kid he hated working for a big videogame corporation. It's apparently as bad as it gets for an engineer, in the vast majority of cases.
Yea know. I kinda wish they’d try and reboot some of their series: Golden Axe, NIGHTS, Jet Set Radio, CRAZY TAXI, Virtua fighter. They have so many interesting series...I mean I love Sonic and Yazuka but come on now.
Nights into Dreams is getting a spiritual successor by the same guy, i think it was shown in the Xbox Showcase thingy earlier this year.
these aged well and not well (just kidding i mean well AND GIGA WELL LETS GOOOOO BALAN WONDERWORLD #BALANSWEEP)
I’m loving the chip tune hip hop hits to denote what era we’re watching. 😂
What's the tune that starts after Gansta's Paradise? It's bugging the hell out of me 😂
philip foster I think it was “Yeah” by Usher feat. Ludacris and Lil Jon.
YES! Thank you! 😀
What happun is worth the patreon price alone. My favourite UA-cam recurring series.
I don't know why this one hasn't been suggested yet, but I don't see Metroid: Other M on the channel yet. I'd love to hear how that whole mess came about with Team Ninja.
Mr.Plush yeah who wrote Samus’s character in that game, they really destroyed her haha XD
@@IgikoPop yeah no kidding, the writing for Metroid Other M, especially for Samus is a joke from what we are used to as a character, if they wanted to give her a voice, just take a look at Ellen Ripley from Alien as an example for what Samus could be like, heck Metroid was inspired from Alien from the start. So yeah...
@@IgikoPop From what I recall, Samus's (awful/lack of) character was mandated to be that way by the director of the series, Sakamoto
Brunosky Inc. that’s interesting! So the director wanted her to be weaker and more emotional, but for what exact reason? Because relatable isn’t one of them haha
@@IgikoPop
The dude is a weirdo. To quote his wiki:
"Sakamoto claimed in a Super Metroid interview that he was the only one to know where Samus Aran's beauty mark was". What... What does that have to do with anything? Other than seeming fucking creepy?
The talented folks who developed Streets of Rage 4 would be prime candidates for a new Golden Axe entry.
Before this, I never even knew there was Golden Axe game on 7th gen cnosoles.
I think the most depressing thing about this series is that studios can work really hard and kill themselves with crunch to make games that aren’t that good and they know aren’t going to be good even after the years they put into it
Hey Sega, wanna make some money on Golden Axe, port The Revenge of Death Adder to modern consoles in HD and with online and couch Co-op! And get DotEmu to do Golden Axe 4!
@Joey Ford/home Agreed!
At least Arcade1Up announce making a full recreation Cabinet of Revenge of Death Adder including some other games on it!
It's still expensive but dammit I want one!
@Re Up/home Where was my estimate? Where did state a figure? I didn't, you are reading to much into my comment, My friend.
But for an Arcade game that has never gotten a home release, where as many, many other arcade titles have gotten releases, some many times.
And as Revenge of Death Adder is perhaps the best Golden Axe game in the series, i think you'll find a lot more fans are around then you might think.
Am i saying Sega will, No, of course not, it would just be nice to play it on something other than MAME!
@@RockRedGenesis wasnt it ported to the Saturn back in the day?
@@eifary9887/home Sadly, Revenge of Death Adder has never received a home console release.
So much enthusiasm and work has died for nothing in the video games industry... :(
But... I kind of like watching late-stage capitalism fuck art in the ass... Isn't that why we're here? 🤔
The Order 1886, X-men: Destiny, Aquaman
Totally. I bought The Order for 10 bucks and loved it, but beat it in one sitting. If I had paid any more than that, I would have been pissed.
It's not just short, it's misleading. The werewolves are promoted as the big bads, but they're hardly in the game, and the encounters you do have aren't enough to justify that. That and it sequel baits without really telling a fleshed out story. Still, it was a very visibly expensive project, and it'd be neat to see Matt do a deep dive and uncover the legacy of its developers.
Has he been known to take requests or suggestions from the UA-cam comments, or just from his Patreon supporters? I really want to know!
This is a little depressing, cuz the game actually looks pretty impressive even by today's standards 15 years later...
Yep, was reading a postmortem and the devs pointed out the fact it was one of the only games on the 360 that was running at 60fps at the time.
Looks don’t account for much when a game is boring as shit and plays like it too.
I remember hearing about this game, but never actually playing it. Guess I didn't miss much.
I'd like to see a What Happun? on Ratchet: Deadlocked. I like the game, but I know the shift in aesthetic, tone, and gameplay threw a lot of people off. Plus with the troubled production story, I'm surprised they came up with a solid game within a single year.
That game kicks ass but yeah very interesting and unfortunate instance of production Hell.
That would be interesting! Ratchet: Deadlocked is my favorite in the series, and is actually my first Ratchet & Clank game I played on the PS2. Even got the game on the PS3, and that version is... something.
I would love to see what happened behind the scenes. Heck, didn't even know they had trouble with the production.
@@steelsunglasses4291 It was kind of awkwardly-sandwiched in between multiple projects. Coming just after UYA and during Resistance FoM and ToD's development, which is why it was decided to make it a spinoff instead of another mainline entry like originally-planned... in fact it was originally going to be an even more drastic tonal departure for the series essentially acting as a reboot titled Nexus, and was going to have a tone and atmosphere more akin to Halo but since PS3 devkits were coming along they decided to split concepts intended for each game between Deadlocked and Resistance: FoM all in the span of about 10-11 months.
@@steelsunglasses4291 I was literally unable to play the PS3 version due to a screeching noise that starts after the tutorial. Nothing fixed it, fortunately Sony gave me a refund on it.
Oh god, my dad helped work on this game...
I'm sorry to hear that..
Hara kiri?
well don't leave us in suspense, what did he do?
He was one of the artists for the game.
But I can't disclose names due to obvious reasons.
I'll be honest, this one almost made me cry.
I *loved* Golden Axe 2 on my Genesis, and I loved the first and third games when I finally got a chance to play it. I love the simple yet evocative fantasy setting of these games.
I didn't even know Beast Rider *existed* as a game until watching this video. And seeing even a hint of Tyris Flare existing in any medium was actually exciting for me - even as I knew it would end in disaster.
I really, really hope that Golden Axe does get a second chance one day - I have extremely fond memories of this franchise, and I would love to see it given the kind of proper loving treatment it deserves.
I was actually afraid to even watch this because I read about its failure years ago, it affected me so much I never even opened my copy of the game...and I assumed from the LOLWACKY thumbnail it would be like a Calypso Twin blooper reel. Glad it wasn't!
I'd love to see a "What Happened?" on Postal 3, actually. That thing was trash, good to see Postal 4 is shaping up to be decent again.
You can really tell this game was in development for so long when their lead AAA game had a fur bikini warrior this late in the 2000's, when that was slowly being phased out.
Oh, those Phase 1 Marvel games hurt my goddamn soul, except for Cap's game, that was... tolerable.
i played the Cap game and, idk if i was bad at it, but there was a section that i could never finish as a kid and it stifled me from finishing the game, kinda like the last level in SEGA's Thor.... movie game.... huh.
Best $7.99 I ever spent at the bargain bin. I had a lot of fun with it despite its many, many flaws. The dodge/parry mechanic is pretty neat once you get into it.
I enjoyed it as a rental so much it convinced me my purchase of an Xbox was worth it.
I really wanna get a copy of this game somehow,I find it oddly fascinating even if it’s just a God Of War clone but slightly more higher tier, idk.
Matt's just pumping these videos out during these strange stay in doors times. Thanks King!
This game was actually pretty good. The combo system feels like a less polished, harder Arkham system. Pretty satisfying once you master the different color counter system. Plus the story is pure B-Movie gold.
Can you do a video on Hunt Down the Freeman? I want to know why that terrible fan game happened
The best Golden Axe in recent history is Dragon's Crown
at this point we'd need a Down the Rabbit Hole-type video about sega's many many many many weird/stupid decisions and failed projects
We should get a new Golden Axe in the vein of Streets of Rage 4.
It's definitely possible. 9/10 Steam 96% Google. As far as art style goes, grimdark would be awesome but at this point I'll take anything I can get
Does someone remembers "Primal" a PS2 exclusive that was supposed to be awesome (it was good) but was forgotten? Maybe Matt could talk about it
You can play it on PS now lol
@@onetnecghoti3473 then it's not that forgotten lol
Pretty sure Matt has talked about it at length and even done an edited lets play on this very channel.
It's not a game or film but could we just get one on Randy Pitchford in general? That saga needs to be documented
MALICE would be perfect. It suffered a notorious development hell and i am sure there is a great story behind it. One well known detail is they wanted gwen stefani to voice the main chararcter
01:25 Is that a MIDI version of 'Gangster's Paradise'?
it was fire!
No, it's from the Genesis.
ua-cam.com/video/Mve--Z5snzE/v-deo.html
And the track after that sounds like "Yeah!"
What this series has taught me throughout the years if you are aspiring to be in the game dev industry in any form is;
- Caffeine or energy drinks are going to be your best friend when it comes to long hours, crunchtime days and weekend projects
- Probably a good idea to stock up on migraine and anxiety meds prior to starting work on a new project
- You may want to save money, just incase the project gets canceled or higher ups make the call for it to be rushed out the door
we lost everything, this sums all of this tragedy up perfectly, such a shame, I loved how this game looked
Oh yeah, I saw this game being sold on local store. Looked fun-ish in that weird clunk and jank way
8:42 That’s a reference from somewhere, innit? I’ve heard OSW Review use the same reference of slowing it down, slowing it waaaaay down.
Can of coke for you.
1:30 I laughed at the Gangta’s Paradise playing in the background
"You're basically inheriting a mess"
- Me, anytime I talk to children.
The answer to a modern Golden Axe game is so simple, so obvious, it's a wonder it hasn't happened already. Platinum.
Heck yeah, Platinum making a new proper Golden Axe would kick all kinds of ass. 😄
sadly it seems that thats not going to happen right now since they are working for nintendo
Or Vanillaware. I mean, Sega owns Atlus now and Dragon's Crown was basically a Golden Axe game already.
@@moonlightact1792 they have a contract with them i think, making bayonetta 3 and such... 🤷♂️
@@moonlightact1792 they're also doing something for Square, as well as their own stuff, so I could still see it happening one day.
It's wild seeing this after the "Golden Axed" prototype came out, and SEGA got flak for calling it buggy and janky, even though it had been made by like 3 people in the span of less than 2 months
I've been writing these subjects for next eps, and I'll keep writing them until they are made... Brutal Legend and Clive Baker's Jericho should get their own episode
Hey Matt, have you ever heard of a game named Bodycount for the 360 and PS3? It was meant to be a spiritual successor to Black (2005). Might be interesting for a wha happun episode
Oh boy, that was a hunk oh shit
Wait, wait a second. I knew as a factoid that the dwarf from Golden Axe was named Gilius Thunderhead before this video. I honestly, non-jokingly suggested that Gilius Thunderhead had a chance at getting into Smash Bros, or at least thought he'd be a good pick (unique design, maybe the most famous axe-user in gaming, and a classic series), but is the main hero seriously not even named? Is he SERIOUSLY just called "Axe Battler?"
I've looked it up. -and yes. Gilius Thunderhead, Tyris Flare, and fucking Ax Battler. Good. Ship it.
Wow, I just watched the official Making-Of of the game - it's like they were talking about a whole different game! Anyway, I bought the game last week (because this video made me curious) and I really like it for what it is!
It had great potential. It's a bit like the movie Prometheus, you have to ignore the bad decisions and you can appreciate the great design, assets, and atmosphere.
As a Golden Axe fan - and fan of beat 'em ups in general - Beast Rider was always one of those games that I thought "MAYBE I'll pick that up when it's in the bargain bin."
It just looked like it was Golden Axe in name only. Reminded me more of those cartoon licence overhead action games on the PS2/Gamecube (Teen Titans, TMNT2:Battle Nexus) when I'd watch footage of it.
If you are going to bring a beat 'em up to 3D, then just do it like Die Hard Arcade. Otherwise, keep it 2D like Castle Crashers or Dragon's Crown.
I would love to see Platinum Games work on a Golden Axe game
The original vision behind Bioshock Infinite would be a good video idea to do
Man that game was so fucking disappointing and looked absolutely NOTHING like the promo videos that came out a year earlier.
@@philllllllll They even nerfed Elizabeth's bust between that trailer and final release. Literally no one got what they wanted.
You should do a What Happened to The World Ends With You
While NOT a failure, it is a Sleeper Hit and the IP was basically only kept alive thanks to fans showing Square Enix that there's still an audience for it. Yet they allowed the IP to basically stay dead for 14 years and only recently made the sequel. I think it would be cool if you could research why that is? and why they didn't advertise the IP that much when it debuted in 2008
“Let’s all start where the troubles began...1995”
Matt, i still regret being born that year, you don’t have to tell me!
This one is such a guilty pleasure of mine and I still find myself craving a game similar to what was originally pitched.
@Black Chandelier Mirage If the sequel can iterate more on machine riding and taming, it really would scratch this itch. How I'd love to have companions in a similar sense to Far Cry.
This is a crazy amount of insight and backstory. Great vid!!
You should talk about that odd altered Beast ps2 reboot
Another awesome, amusing, and informative episode Matt. I think Capcom's fighting division would make a great topic for the next Wha Happun? episode. They have been dropping the ball with some of the fighting games they released in the last decade and refusing to revisit their other ip's (like Power Stone and Rival Schools) that made an impact in the 1990's and make new fighting games based on them. Look forward to the next episode.
Every What Happened? video summarized:
-Nobody on the development team agreeing on the vision of the project
-Deadlines put on by studio heads forcing developers to be overworked
-The project becoming a critical and commercial failure due to poor planning
-The destruction of the franchise and the eventual dissolution of the company
Man. The original plan for this sounds awesome. I hope it is revisited some day.
Fight For Life. Atari Jaguar Fighter. WHA HAPPUN MATTHEW?
Dave Halverson gave it a 9/10(whose Sonic review you might recall from the Sonic 2k6 Wha Happen episode). In fact this also inspired his infamous rant about "real game critics"
Yeah that whole era of games journalism was a weird time
New to the channel sir, but what I appreciate is taking about engine/dev/publisher.
I used to review JRPGS, and one thing people often forget is that a localizer is not responsible for the original design of the game (especially for budget JRPGs).
Again, TY, and keep educating people about the roles different companies have in the process.
Since it was shown a lot in this video, a video on the development of the sonic movie would be great to see since it had a pretty rocky history of development. Love the videos man, keep up the great work!
Honestly, Golden Axe would've worked decently in the modern age as SEGA's God of War or Devil May Cry. Sure, it might've been derivative, but SEGA has pretty much done exactly that during their time in the console market, with Streets of Rage basically being their Final Fight, Shinobi their Ninja Gaiden, and Shining Force their Fire Emblem, just to name a few. Then again, I can see why they wouldn't go that route seeing as it was the period in time were two-bit God of War knock-offs were flooding the market, and Beast Rider no doubt would've sunk like all the other pretenders. At the same time, had SEGA been more proactive in using its catalogue unused franchises and retooled Golden Axe as a God of War clone when God of War was still new, then they could've avoided being swallowed in the see of cheap knock-offs and saved themselves the embarrassment.
I almost feel like you could make an entire feature-length episode of What Happened? just chronicling the rise and fall of SEGA given their track record as a publisher.
You know, it just occurred to me.
Why not do a Wha Happun? on Sega itself?
For what it's worth, Vanillaware's Dragon's Crown is basically the best Golden Axe game ever made, and Sega even publishes it by way of Atlus.
I found this game to be okay, and quite enjoyable, actually.
Wow that 8-bit Gangster’s Paradise really works.
Just coming from Sega's "New Era" announcement.
Guess what's coming back...
Dude I LOVE WHA HAPPUN. Every time you upload one I watch it immediately.
I look forward to the eventual episodes of Mega man X7 and AC: Unity
You got your wish on the first one. 🙂
With all the blur from the Secret Level's office and the long time it took for Tyris Flare makes you wonder why they were taking it SLOW and AMBITIOUS
loooooool that quote at the end essentially says
"THE REAL TREASURE IS THE FRIENDS WE MADE ALONG THE WAY!"
Boy I hope the next time Sega tries resurrecting the Golden Axe series they don't fuck up again in ever more painful and horrible ways..... *nervous laughter as Golden Axed's corpse rapidly sprints towards me like a Payday Cloaker*
I suggest Good Bad Flicks video he made on this game. As a companion piece to this one.
If only Sega could do the wise thing and release Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder on consoles these days, it would be easy money for little investment. The best Golden Axe game, and they (like the video said) completely ignored it. Not sure what red tape kept that game legitimately locked to just the arcades.
this one has arrived right on time Matt! I played this game for the first time a week ago or so, wanted to see for myself if it's really that bad or people make it out to be. well, it is. such a shame and wasted potential.
“Unfortunately, [Golden Axe B.R.] was a bit shit.” - Belinda Heywood, producer at Secret Level at the time. that sums it up pretty well.
Ah yes, the classic case of "make a GTA game with a small fraction of the staff and budget that Rockstar employs."
Hunted the demons forge and the digital extremes' star trek are both definitely "wha happen?" material
I enjoyed hunted, that was my "golden axe".
Guru Larry said that an ipotetical Golden Axe 4 was cancelled because a new higher up guy didn't know the series at all.
I don't know if that's real, but if it is, that's wild.
The "Beast Rider" definitely doesn't sound right.
Sounds like a tittle for a paranormal romance book featuring werewolves.
I have only just discovered this series of videos, and the thing that’s really fascinating to me is that the history of loads of these games/studios/etc. and why they failed could actually be pretty easily explained to your parents/grandparents/anyone else without much of a gaming background but with a taste for older movies like this - They are literally just a modern version of the plot of the old film “Singin in the Rain” XD
For those who haven’t seen it (and I highly recommend you look it up, it’s actually pretty hilarious and I feel like it’s held up a lot better over time than a lot of movies from the same era - plus, it stars Carrie Fisher’s mom, which is neat), it’s a comedy about a bunch of people at a film studio back in the 20’s making a Silent Movie... but halfway through production, “Talking Pictures” with actual recorded dialogue and soundtracks come out for the first time, and their boss demands that the whole movie has to be *totally* redone in the new format.
This is obviously a problem for several reasons - no one can figure out how to use the new sound equipment or get it to sync up with the film, none of the actors actually have the right voices for the characters they’re supposed to be playing (and one of them sounds hilariously awful, which is a major plot point), “Talkies” are so new that nobody quite knows how they’re supposed to work and they have to figure out everything from the ground up, and several of the key actors hate each other and won’t cooperate; this all obviously results in a rushed and horrible product that bombs its first test screening for critics, and they have very limited time to try and fix it before releasing it to the public. *SOUND FAMILIAR?* (Squints loudly at Sonic X-Treme Video)
The solution? Remix their swashbuckling action flick into a MUSICAL in an effort to try and save it, and dub over their bad actress’s voice with the voice of another woman with re-cut footage. A classic “move so insane that it just might work”...... which is a tactic which a lot of game studios pressed for time seem to fall back on regularly in these videos, but at the risk of spoilers, IT TENDS TO GO VERY DIFFERENTLY FOR THEM THAN IT DOES IN THE FILM. >.>’
Anyway, this is apropos of absolutely nothing - I just always love media that lets us see exactly what people in different industries have to do to adapt during a time of sudden transition, and that these same problems and patterns have followed us through any kind of creative or inventive endeavor throughout history? It’s just a neat little recurring parallel that makes both the past and the present feel more... Human, I guess. ^w^
Anyway, absolutely LOVE this series, and keep up the good work, man! :D
Imagine naming your game Golden Axe and your characters all wielding swords.
It's in there, but not until the end
Yeah, it feels like game companies are guilty of either using the same two or three IPs while multiple others rot under their feet. But seeing this and knowing some stories, maybe its better to allow old IPs to rest in peace.
"What can the engine do?"
"What do you want/need it to do?"
"Well what can it do?"
Boundaries are important
You are literally the most underrated UA-camr your videos are so entertaining
The fact that you used the Jon Batiste Green Hill Zone makes me love you even more
This game deserves a remake or a sequel, it could be like Monster Hunter but with linear story and multiple playable characters, features a sexy strong female protagonist like Tomb Raider, *IT COULD WORK!*
I'd love to see Wha Happun tackle the No One Lives Forever series. The two games are, from what I remember, really good! But who exactly owns the rights to the IP is kind of hazy and has been since the release of the sequel, which is why it's never gotten a third installment.
Interesting and often heartbreaking stuff. They did get one thing right--Ax-Battler is still not battling with an axe, it seems! Also, it'd be interesting to see you tackle Raven's Cry at some point, if the idea appeals.
I know I'm not V.I.P... but TWO WORLDS needs its story told. I will not give up!
So when Nintendo comes over and tell their customers that Metroid Prime 4 will be delayed for years since they're completely redoing it from scratch due to the current version being a piece of sh*t... well, it makes you respect them a lot!
As sad as this... well, _whole story_ was, I gotta admit, the "Chances for a future installment have most likely.... been *axed"* pun kinda made it worth it XD
Freakin' Sega, man. They have not one, but TWO really good western studios now who have shipped awesome brawler/action games - Relic (Warhammer 40K Space Marine) and Creative Assembly (Spartan Total Warrior, Viking: Battle for Asgard) - and either one of them would absolutely crush a Golden Axe reboot if given the chance. Hell, not to mention the Yakuza team if they wanted to keep it in Japan. But the execs just don't see these opportunities.
It boggles my mind that Sega of Japan, despite seeing so little from Secret Level throughout the production of Beast Rider here, felt good about backing _that_ but Sega Japan now can't see they could have the freakin' Space Marine team make a new, good, one. Ugh. That's such a Sega thing to do.....
Came to this comment section just to say: WE GETTING NEW GOLDEN AXE ACTION!
I found and bought Dante's Inferno at a flea market one day and lo and behold, Golden Axe Beast Rider was accidentally put there as the second disc... and it's still there, waiting to be played to this day.
I don't know with Streets of Rage coming back Golden Axe might have a chance at a revival
Hard agree 💪
Did anybody else see the dude at 8:56 and go "Wait, was that Guts?" and had to rewatch it?
Why does that song at 1:45 sound like gangsters paradise
I mean we are getting some Golden Axe action figures this year. That's... something?
