    Last year I was doing this IT course and the teacher who was running it also worked on the tomb raider games. I also asked her the question what happened? And its pretty much what Matt summed up in the video. But she gave a little bit more info on the heads of Core Design apparently in her own words for another reason why Tomb Raider did not make any money. The heads spent the money on fast cars, hookers and blow. And they did not spent that much money on the tech between the PS1 to the PS2 game another reason why the massive bugs in the game. I do agree with her since the 90's in the UK all nightclubs and the drug culture was way high.

    Alright, personal story time. My mum was the one who got me into video games when I was only a toddler, and the games that we played together the most were the Tomb Raider games. Even though I was really little I just enjoyed being able to run and jump all around Lara's manor and watching my mum playing and exploring through the games.
    A few years pass and after we've gotten our PS2, we hear about the new Tomb Raider game coming out and we preorder it, it was the first time I'd ever heard of such a thing, but all I knew was that it was supposed to get us the game faster, as opposed to waiting until a birthday or christmas to get it. Then the delays started and the date got pushed back again, and again and again, and we ended up getting it the next year, and when we played it...God, joy just drained from both our faces, it was the first time I had ever been disappointed in a game, first time I'd ever played a game that even as a kid I could recognise was terrible. I still haven't beaten it to this day, the memories are just too drilled into me to try it again.

      Similar story; me and my cousin were both youngsters and she was the one who introduced me to tomb raider. She had every game at the time, all the Ps1 titles and all the ps2 titles...except for angel of darkness. Noticing this, I bought the game for one of her birthdays, thinking I was doing a nice thing. Couple days later and I ask her how the game is; she says she hasn't really touched it. I get mad, want to know why she isnt playing this game, since Lara Croft is like her fucking idol. After ab an hour of arguing, she finally said "just play it yourself" and so I did...and immediately returned the game and gave my cousin the 20 bucks instead. We dodged a fucking bullet.

      It makes sense if you think about it. With AOD people were going off of what the ps1 games were. 90% of people were very dissatisfied with AOD to the point where they were more hesitant to buy Anniversary. Personally, I played all the games when I were young and wasn’t so critical of AOD or any game at that. Looking back on it, it was fun to me. Just sitting alone in my room playing games all into the night. Nostalgia blinds me to what the game really is and it’s a mess.

    • @tomeekun
      @tomeekun 3 роки тому +8

      Angel of Darkness released after a 3 year break from the series. Gamers were hungry and the hype was real. Anniversary was hastily thrown together. Core was supposed to do a 10th anniversary edition of the game and Crystal started developing Anniversary simply because they wanted to preserve their ownership of the franchise. Anniversary received basically no advertisement and marketing whatsoever and was forgotten immediately after released. It's a shame really, personally I feel it's the best TR game they ever made and after all these years it's clear it was just an afterthought in the grand scheme.

    • @RetroMario

      I kinda think that the final nail in the coffin for Clover was Okami. A great game that gets ported everywhere nowadays, but its initial sales were such a disaster for such an expensive production that it destroyed Clover. But in all accounts God Had also played a pivotal role in the closure of that studio and I'd love to hear about it!

    • @LordArikado
      @LordArikado 4 роки тому +10

      God Hand wasn't necessarily what killed Clover, it was that very few of their projects ended up selling well enough to be called successful. They only had one game popular enough to spawn a franchise, and that was Viewtiful Joe. This was also compounded by a shift in Capcom's focus at the time from producing new, fresh, innovative IPs, to trying in vain to capture the western market and retooling all of their already-successful franchises to fit this new direction, along with the next console generation getting ready to begin, so they closed a lot of their smaller studios to keep their costs as low as possible. Clover just happened to be a victim of shitty circumstances, considering most if not all of their games were critical darlings at the time.

    To be precise on what was lost on Kertis, Kertis was intended to be a psion mercenary and former member of what could be comparable to a society of hunters who hunted down anyone who practiced the dark arts. And Kertis would have had different abilities compared to Lara.
    To be exact, while Lara had the far more athletic abilities and access to more powerful weapons, Kertis would have been able to use his powers to double jump, gain supernatural physical strength, use Farsee to stay in a safe spot, (For a lack of a better way to explain it) send his soul out to scout an area ahead of him, use telekinesis to fight and manipulate the world, and use his unique disk-blade weapon.
    Unfortunately, Kertis was sidelined due to the cut content mentioned in the video. This led to Kertis losing ALL of his unique traits. The only thing that set him apart from Lara was his LACK of abilities and the fact that he had a unique pistol whose power is not possible to judge due to it being his only means of attack. And we only get to play as him twice, once after he locks Lara up in an elevator to contain her due to her accidentally releasing a monster in the facility so he could deal with it himself while keeping her on a leash, and then for a few more moments in a boss fight where he dies in an anticlimatic way.
    Shame. If they let AoD finish and were not hazarded by the problem at Eidos, I'm sure AoD would have been great. But.... oh well.

      IV is set in a very dull brown world. The environments are basically all the same, and Lara's James Bond-style puns were really cringy. On top of that, they changed her wonderful and brooding voice actress for the Nivea woman who sounds about 12.
      Above all, TR4 was the forth release on an already stretched engine. It was, at the time, already dated in feeling and really most people didn't complete PS1 games, ESPECIALLY Tomb Raider. They were satisfied with the Tomb Raiders they already owned.
      All in all, TR4 offered nothing new and took away some of the best thematic elements of the opening trilogy (voice actress, script writing, environmental diversity, classical sounding music to reflect the character, logical puzzles as opposed to gimmick puzzles, newness and freshness, Lara's Home).

    Angel of Darkness is one of my favourite Tomb Raider games, regardless of it's various problems.
    It's story line was so intriguing to me; I have played it many times and only got a real bad bug once (I bet on the fighters in the church and the cutscene never ended lol)
    I would actually kill to know what the rest of the story is. Just knowing that my favourite Lara arc ever (TR4, TRC, TRAoD) is forever gone and incomplete makes me feel so hollow inside

    I remember picking this game solely on the cool cover art and having heard of Lara Croft as an iconic character (i was a N64 teen, so didn't played the one before)
    At first i was really into it, loved the story. It was intriguing, and the atmosphere was great. Also it was back then one of the few games having a french audio track, so that was super cool.
    Sadly the game is what turned me off from the game. I hated that there was no autosave/checkpoints, had to save every 2 secs, as one fall would be an insta kill. At some point i didn't knew what to do anymore (that was pre-youtube era) , even my guide (yeah i had bough it) didn't helped me, so i just decided to let it go, never finishing the game.
    Years later i bough the DVD version of the game, you know you control with a remote. I want to play it just for the story at some point lol

    How about talking about Lucasarts? I know this series is more focused on the fallout of a single game, but I feel like there is good material there to explore. I know it was the Disney buyout that finally laid that company to rest, but it was no secret that studio was in decline well before that. Heck, their last major, in-house triple-A release was Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, which was a disappointing sequel to an already meh game. And didn't you and Woolie test for them? There must be some stories that you can now share, because I doubt a dead company cares about broken NDAs anymore.

    Speaking of Tomb Raider Chronicles, Andy Sandham who was a developer at Core Design spoke about that game in an interview that I saw a quote of in that AVGN video about Tomb Raider games. Andy called the game "a load of old shit". That it was the most depressing one for them. "Three years of hammering it and we were burnt out. That shows in the product." I guess The Last Revelation was meant to be their last gane but Eidos wanted another one. Then another one

    Tomb Raider was genuinely ruined when CD took over. They ruined her character from a self sufficient heroine who did what she does for herself and made her into a generic Daddy's girl, turning Lord Henshingly Croft, Aristocrat into "Richard" an explorer, where his original iteration DESPISED the fact his daughter would stoop so low and even DISOWNED LARA for the act.
    Imagine if Eidos gave Core more time, we may still see them making the games to this day.

Core worked on a pretty little PSP game (that was essentially in playable alpha) called Tomb Raider: Anniversary Edition. They didn't know that CD got the same projekt, and the plug was pulled on the game before it was finished. There are trailers (or something equivalent) online.

    It seems the root of the problem is the publishers and managers had done everything to piss off developers and sap morale over the years to the point where even promises of big pay days weren't enough to keep them around. Leading to a situation where you had a bunch of inexperienced developers working on the game. Who were being overly ambitions with what they were trying to implement.
