These games were batshit insane, and seemed completely non-selfaware of it, unlike bayonetta and DMC. Atleast Itagaki's version had the sense to focus on that gameplay over the crazy story and world, and 3 did everything but that. NG Black's multiple difficulties had so many changes between them, it was like a completely different game on each playthrough, until the Master Ninja difficulty broke me.

Nowadays I'm a very fast learner and love to master those types of games. But it'll take a while until I master DMC3 itself so I'll be patient until I revisit Ninja Gaiden as well.
The one thing I remember most about NG3 is how the dev kept saying how Ryu was a dark Japanese hero without ever explaining what the hell that even meant.
@Krueger Pool The 13th I don't know, humanizing Ryu is not the worst idea, they just didn't know how to actually do that. Hell, Metal Gear Rising basically had the same plot and they pulled it off.
@@TexasHollowEarth Oh i played the game enough to figure out every counter strat, but they're still BS because they're not fun to fight or interesting. The best way to deal with them is homing wind dragon sword jump attacks. They can't attack while you're in the air and the landing frames keep you safe as well. Fire Wheels ninpo makes you safer as well. I still hate them.
@@cartoonvideos5 There's actually a small window at the end of the multi attack sequence where you're vulnerable and I've had ghost fish get through it during the attacks before as well. Either way, they're just not fun to fight, they have no moveset, require spam attack strategies and respawn for entirely too long.
@@andrevaldez2810 Honestly i never really had trouble with NGB camera, it's just about zoomed out enough, has a dedicated recentre button and it moves subtly towards enemies offscreen to let you know where they are and what direction they're attacking from. Add to that almost every enemy having well telegraphed audio for their offscreen attacks and it's not an issue. Having said that, it's true that during some tighter corridors it can get a bit awkward and you're right that some enemies (looking at you flame ninjas, Alma) are a bit too grab happy.
Something I loved about Ninja Gaiden is that most of the changes that made it into Black were patched into the original game via the (free) Hurricane Packs. It's something I wish developers would do more often.
The fact that people every saw him as "visionary" or "auteur" comparable to Kojima or Miyamoto is mind boggling. He's always been a hack that takes credit for the work of others.
It's so sad that the Ninja Gaiden storyline got mixed with Dead Or Alive which there's less hope for a new Ninja Gaiden since we only get experience a new Ninja Gaiden story on a fighting game.
Not really, other than Ayane helping Ryu in Ninja Gaiden and Ryu helping the Mugen-Tenshin in DOA there's no crossover in the story. We never see DOA main villain group mentioned in NG as well no NG villains like the fiends in DOA. Even the tone is very different in both, with DOA being mostly sci-fi (Tengu aside) while NG has mythical demons etc.
I will gladly die on the hill that Gaiden Black is still the purest, best made action game in terms of pure mechanics. Gaiden 2 was still fun, but mostly worse in every regard. And then 3 came out.
Gaiden Black certainly has silky smooth mechanics and design, but the enemies never really did it for me and the environments were bland for a majority of the game. As well, Gaiden 2 is just such a blast to play and I remember its boss fights more fondly. Its like the Dead Rising 2 to Dead Rising: not as refined, but brings enough to the table to stand alongside the original. Gaiden 3 is just a travesty in every aspect, but I have a certain fondness for the concept of Yaiba, even though the game is a steaming pile of shit. I mean, c'mon, playing the antithesis to Ryu is too good of an idea, and I feel Miss Monday has a lot of potential as a heroine. If they had either a japanese team or a competent american team develop it, I feel it would at least been a nice diversion.
@@Mentalbutsafe I quite prefer the relatively simple worlds of Gaiden. They never felt intrusive and felt pretty cohesive, even when you'd transition from a city to a firery cave or a giant undeground cavern. They were always set dressing. And I'll have to respectfully disagree that the enemies in 2 were better. Sure, some of the bosses were better than some of the more mundane ones in 1 (Remember the tentacle worm? I bet I've made you remember the tentalce worm! Nobody remembers his sorry ass). However, the standout bosses in 1 are just so much better than in 2. Alma 1 and 2 are still among my favorite boss fights, Doku's 2 fights as well are really memorable, and I'd probably say Mirai (Murai? Murabi? It's been so long) is one of the best made first bosses ever, with even games like the Souls series trying to capture the same feeling of him. And the general enemies in 2 I just wasn't a fan of. Everything had to be busy as hell and overdesigned. Instead of the simpler designs of 1 you had the weird spider robots or the mechs, and the game had a serious addiction to spamming projectile enemies from offscreen just to pump up the difficulty, which made the experience vastly worse, and ironically killed the level design for me when instead of liking the more varied locations all I could think about is how bad the camera was when I was blown to bits by rockets I couldn't see. And, to be honest, I feel like 2's main antagonist really really tried to replicate the feeling of fighting Evil/Fiend Ryu, as in a Ryu sized and shaped enemy that truly felt like an equal, but instead fell more towards the Murai side and didn't really quite hit the highs of either. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy 2, but I give Black- despite its flaws, which it does have- a 10/10 while 2 gets more of an 8/10. The biggest thing was that I dislike the enemy designs and encounters, even if I think 2 have better weapons in some regards.
@@MayhemMessiah I respectfully disagree with you on some points, as most of the bosses after the first part of the game are fairly unremarkable/tedious (tanks, helicopters, worms, the same tentacle monster 3 times), save for the final boss, and I will forever stand by the fact that Alma is pure cancer (even masters at the game say they hate her; they don't say that about Mirai). Also, while the setting transitions were smoother, they were still really boring for the most part. Going from the exciting areas from the beginning of the game to the mundane historical city and caves, and then back to the city is always such a letdown. The end parts are marginally more interesting. I agree with you on the points of the common enemies, but I was more referring to their enhanced interactions. Its like Yahtzee Croshaw said, these enemies will not stop coming after you, even with half their limbs blown off. The main antagonist of 1 definitely was better though. Also, while 2's camera was worse, 1's was still bad. Finally, I despise the water level of 1 FAR more than 2's, so much so that it drops the game a full point in my book. tl;dr 1 is an 8.5/10 for me while 2 is an 8. Ninja Gaiden 3 should have taken the best parts from both games and trimmed the fat to make the best action game ever, but they fucked it up and now the series is dead. RIP.
Wasn't there a recent leak on a website that showed Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 and 3 coming to current and next gen systems? I really hope they don't use the sigma versions of 1 and 2 and use razors edge for 3.
You KNOW they're going to use the Sigma versions. Im pretty sure microsoft owns the rights to Black and vanilla 2, i think they helped fund their development. Sigma 1 is pretty decent, but Sigma 2 is fucking trash, for many more reasons than the removal of blood and gore.
@@Busterbalz I have no issues with sigma 1(still prefer black) but Sigma 2? My. god. It was such a snore fest. They made the essence system obsolete with the way weapon upgrade works and the lesser number of enemies. Don't even get me started with the girls, they could have made them separate from the main campaign and with the way sigma 2 is, they are such a chore to play through. And contrary to what others think about the water combat, I actually like it : )
@@cartoonvideos5 I could not care less about an Xbox, but I do want the best and most complete versions of these games. If those versions are not the ones that are coming then I think it's more than just "Xbox fanboys" that should be unhappy about it. In the long run though, Ninja Gaiden isn't exactly important enough to get all worked up about so... whatever.
It was always a huge bummer that Tecmo never released the originals along side the sigmas, especially considering how rare Ninga Gaiden 3 is, and Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
So ...Ninja Gaiden 3 is a game that had some hiccups during developmentand launch but ultimately did well enough financially. Maybe we should take a look at Yaiba in a future episode, if that's the game that really killed the franchise.
So, there is definitely truth in the whole "We need to sell sushi instead of Japanese Burgers", especially between NG and Nioh, but I feel I need to point a couple of things out. The attempt to appeal to the west started in NG1. Itagaki stated that that was one of the goals, and this is more obvious between the more western architecture and iconography, and unfortunate emphasis on bikini armor. It was not a new thing by the time NG3 was in development. Nioh was the first game I played of theirs that felt like "We're from Japan, here's some of our distinct mythology to explore." In fact, I found it refreshing, because a LOT of Japanese games (Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry and so on), tended to default to European/Christian influences. Nioh, on the other hand, really dives into Japanese myths, and it gave it a distinct look and feel. As for the "hard edged tone"... Okay. NG1 tried to be hard edged, but it suffered from a lot of tonal dissonance. It's a simple "kill demons" story, and any attempts at complexity and mystery were just laughable. Ryu doesn't really HAVE an arc besides getting more upgrades, Rachel's is hardly there, and the bikini armor made it REALLY hard to take anything seriously. This is trying its best to be an edgy revenge tale, with flying, man eating ghost fish and NG2 on the other hand knew what it was about. Demons invading the world, the villains are obvious and over-the-top, the music is a match and the out of place self seriousness is gone. It is a game about ninja duels on a falling airship before fighting a giant, fiery armadillo. Everything was consistently bonkers, and as a result was just more cohesive. The story beats (while still not very deep) felt more satisfying and beating the game has more of a "Hell yeah!" than the first game. The story of neither NG 1 nor 2 were properly edgy, but the story/cutscenes/music and set pieces of the second game were always more fun for me.
I consider 2 to be the best in the franchise with the the most engaging combat. But i find myself playing razors edge more. To me the combat in it is more visceral and cathartic.
From what I've seen in an interview (revolving Nioh 2), Hayashi would love to start work on a Ninja Gaiden 4, but Nioh 2's DLC takes top priority at the moment. It's definitely possible we'll get a new entry yet!
Past is definitely prologue here, because og NG3 sucked back then, too. As a request for future videos: Grin/Fatshark's Bionic Commando franchise. Capcom's Dark Void. Dark Sector(makers of warframe?).
Casuals will talk about Dark Souls being hard, but the real veterans will know Ninja Gaiden II was the real standard. Fucking hell, not even being an expert at Ninja Gaiden Black would save you that much from it. But through all the pain NGII caused me, I still love it, and there's never really been anything like it since.
I remember when I was going to Goodwill around 4 years back they had a massive stock of the Ninja Gaiden 3 statues that they were trying to sell for $2 each but no one seemed interested and so there was like 12 of them for some reason Also props for using the Naruto Ultimate Ninja OST man I remember having a blast with those on the PlayStation 2
I really loved NG2. Probably my favorite 360 game that wasn't called Halo. I distinctly remember getting my console in 2006 and I got to rent some ninja movies for free thanks to a promotion they had. Good times!
I feel like now would be a good time for a new Ninja Gaiden. Hack n Slashes like DMC and Bayonetta are popular and difficult games like the Souls games people love. Nioh is really fun but I'd prefer a good and challenging hack n slash.
We Happy Few is definitely deserving of a spot here on What Happened?. I was super excited about the game when it first came to early access and I was quite disappointed after I finished it. To be fair, it wasn't a COMPLETE shitstorm, but damn... it could have been so much better. Pretty sure it went through development hell for a couple years.
"we're not going to offer you burger anymore but we're going to offer you a damn good sushi" has to be my favorite quote about owning what you're good at instead of copying what's popular
Please Matt talk about CiNG as a developer, they made my favorite interactive novel/adventures back in the day but they went bankrupt Or talk about Shadows of the Damned
I remember trying it at a friends house, I kept button mashing while I walked out of the room with the controller and everyone was so impressed how I beat all the enemies without even seeing the tv.
Excellent video as always. Although I heard another complaint about Ninja Gaiden 3 was a few scenes that involve Ryu tapping into a more darker side, which involved killing innocent people to progress in the story which felt very out of character for him and was later remedied in Razor's Edge. Sad this this franchise has been put on the shelf as I enjoyed Sigma (despite it's odd quirks from the original Xbox release) and even the one on the DS which I never got to finish, considering how hard it was xD
Such a shame. I loved the originals as a kid, and played the crap out of the first 2 in the modern series, even landing in 12th place in the very first Master Ninja Tournament back when I was 17 or 18 (not quiet enough to earn the Master Ninja t-shirt....). Oh well, at least those two are always worth a revisit.
I'm not ashamed to say that the Ninja Gaiden is way to hard for me to even attempt. I've played Dark Souls 1,2, and 3 and Bloodborne but Nioh kicked my ass. I couldn't even kill the first boss. If one Team Ninja game is that brutal I can only imagine what the rest are like. Mad props to those that can master these games, seriously.
Let’s hope that rumored Ninja Gaiden collection sparks some interest bringing the series back. They’re real good fun, even Razor’s Edge has its merits.
Love your videos, mate! I have always wondered how you get so much information about each story. I would expect developers of most games you cover to be very tight lipped. Must be your silver tongue. Keep up the great work!
My favorite thing ever in a Ninja Gaiden game was I think in Sigma 2, where you get to the long stone staircase and enemies just rush you as you ascend. I got to the top, turned around, and all of the carnage was still there. It was awesome.
Real Ultimate Power was an integral part of my college experience. Your reference to it sent a wave of nostalgia through me that I wasn't ready for. :D
As a die hard Hayabusa Clan supporter, I remember the first version of 3 made me feel nauseous as I completed my first run through in just a couple of hours. It was mind numbing 😑
Cursed: Ryu running like a narutard Blessed: My homegirl Momiji being acknowledged Blursed: Itagaki looking like the Tommy Wiseau of video game designers. *"Oh hi, Matt!"*
Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive wasn't the same without Itagaki. He was the heart and soul of those games. Dead or Alive became more fan service than game. And of course Ninja Gaiden III was...what it was.
Alright. Ninja Gaiden 4. You need 3 recipes : - Doom 2016 like story, and when I say that I mean the WAY THEY DID IT, it means the fewest possible, with the lore in codex or whatever. - DMC like cinematics (Without the goofy stuff, just action scenes mostly) - Mix all past gameplay systems (Ultimate move NG2 system with orbs absorbing, counter NG3 system) with on the fly weapon switching. All right, we have 80% of game. Now, put two difficulties : Casual and Normal. Casual : Easier combos, not heavy damage, camera close ups for ultimate moves and moves like Izuna drops, etc. Make it eye candy. Normal : Ninja Gaiden "normal" difficulty. FOR FANS. GIVE THE PLAYER THE CHOICE. With what you did with Nioh, you have now enough content to do a come-back. Capcom brought back wacky woohoo pizza man, you can bring back tight black leather suit dragon ninja man.
I liked Yaiba. I feel that game biggest mistake was including "Ninja gaiden" on the title. Considering the focus on zombies; simplified combat with focus in using enemy body parts as weapon; the change on artstyle; vulgar humour and overall tone, they are not bad on itself, it just don´t work for hardcore NG fans. Yaiba is one of those cases where brand recognition cause more harm than good. If it was a new IP I think it would be accept as a small game.
Should have mentioned the amount weapons and Ninpo from 2 compared to 3. Vanilla 3 launched with ONE, yes, ONE weapon and one ninpo, no charge moves, etc. It was completely and utterly gutted compared to NG2.
While story heavy stuff doesn't work great in the games, I would love if they did a tie-in anime or comic for Ninja Gaiden. Something like the DMC anime would be great.
What happened: EA Madden post-2012 (maybe EA in general) What Keeps Happening: Yandere Simulator (Developer keeps getting stuck in scandal and can't code well) What happened: Castlevania post Lords of Shadow 2 (that seems to have killed the franchise until the Netflix Castlevania saved it)
I never played Ninja Gaiden 3 but I do remember playing the demo for it and thinking "this ain't right" and then I remember playing the demo for Razor's Edge afterwards thinking "ah this much better." The demos are based around the first missions of the game so it's like right out of the gate you can tell how much better one is than the other.
Really, there shouldn't have even been any sequels after the original. For all intents and purposes: Ryu was essentially ninja Crow. With his mission complete, he should've been able to pass on to the afterlife with the rest of his clan. The sequels cheapen it (for me). If there needed to be sequels, Team Ninja could've easily developed a sequel on Ryu's father, Joe... Whom, during the events of Gaiden would've still been alive and sound in the wilderness in his pursuit of power.
You could do a Viewtiful Joe video, discussing how both of the first games promised a third game (the second one's ending believed to have been tying right into the start of said third game), and yet all we got was a Smash drop-off, a DS pseudo-sequel, and an anime!
An anime whose second season never made it out of Japan and never got a complete home release, making it one of the most stupidly hard to watch anime series out there.
Whenever a Japanese developer makes something with the intent to "appeal to western audiences" they really show how low their opinion of that demographic is.
Not really. Itagaki tried to capitalize on how movies were made in the early 2000s. Problem is he threw the Japanese audience under the bus just to appeal to Westerners and make top dollar/euro. Ironically he failed to realize that, by that point, anime and manga took a foothold of the 18-34 demograph and took Japanese opinion like biblical sermon (weebs, I know).
@@cartoonvideos5 I gurantee you though Ninja Gaiden 3 would have turned out much different than it did if Itagaki had worked on it. Devil's Third on the other hand.. that's a whole other story.

Ninja Gaiden Black was hands down one of the best games I've ever played. The only thing holding it back from perfection is the god damn ghost fish.
The ghost fish aren't that annoying. Just use the vigoorian flail. They become essence vending machines.
Ghost fish are ok compared to the worst camera i ever see and bullshit spamming grabs of some enemies and bosses
The list of things cut from Ninja Gaiden 3 also includes the phrase “If you’re reading this, you have no life”
Which... yeah, that’s fair.
Gets worse with the changes.
You know, it kind of ended pretty well. The developers actually acknowledged and learned from their mistakes. Good for them.
Something I loved about Ninja Gaiden is that most of the changes that made it into Black were patched into the original game via the (free) Hurricane Packs. It's something I wish developers would do more often.
Dead or Alive 6 hurt so bad as a die hard DOA fan, Koei Tecmo is like 2010 Capcom in terms of greed.
"Inafune" + "appeal to the west" = bad news
The fact that people every saw him as "visionary" or "auteur" comparable to Kojima or Miyamoto is mind boggling. He's always been a hack that takes credit for the work of others.
Inafune the ultimate westaboo
Not Shadow of Rome though, that was good.

This literally got suggested to me after the HD collection was announced. Maybe ill finnaly play these games now
Pie Chart is not accurate. Should be 90% blazingly painful fast game play, 4% story, 5% boob physics, 1% inaccuracies in pie charts.
I will gladly die on the hill that Gaiden Black is still the purest, best made action game in terms of pure mechanics. Gaiden 2 was still fun, but mostly worse in every regard. And then 3 came out.
Its definitely top 3 if not the best.
Good man. You and I are kindred spirits MayhemMessiah
RIP.
Honestly thought I would see Yaiba on here before I saw NG3. Always knew I'd see NG3 though.
Wasn't there a recent leak on a website that showed Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 and 3 coming to current and next gen systems? I really hope they don't use the sigma versions of 1 and 2 and use razors edge for 3.
Hope they include the classic nes titles as unlockables too
You KNOW they're going to use the Sigma versions.
In the long run though, Ninja Gaiden isn't exactly important enough to get all worked up about so... whatever.
Yeah...I'm hoping they somehow add the features Black added back into the Sigma versions of 1 and 2.

@@xXSupahXFlyXx exactly

Momiji eh? Now I know which of the Kunouchi series is Matt's favourite :)
This is trying its best to be an edgy revenge tale, with flying, man eating ghost fish and
NG2 on the other hand knew what it was about.

I really loved NG2. Probably my favorite 360 game that wasn't called Halo. I distinctly remember getting my console in 2006 and I got to rent some ninja movies for free thanks to a promotion they had. Good times!
Matt: Ninjas are mammals. . .

I don’t know if I’m just noticing it, but the new intro is lit 🔥
I feel like now would be a good time for a new Ninja Gaiden. Hack n Slashes like DMC and Bayonetta are popular and difficult games like the Souls games people love. Nioh is really fun but I'd prefer a good and challenging hack n slash.
For Halloween, it would be perfect to cover the tragic story behind Shadows of the Damned's development.
I swear Matt, you won't be disappointed.
We Happy Few is definitely deserving of a spot here on What Happened?. I was super excited about the game when it first came to early access and I was quite disappointed after I finished it.
To be fair, it wasn't a COMPLETE shitstorm, but damn... it could have been so much better. Pretty sure it went through development hell for a couple years.

fun fact: ninja gaiden 3: razor's edge on wii u was the first R18+ game released in australia when it became a rating for games

I could've sworn he said WALUIGI was added to the game
I'm not ashamed to say that the Ninja Gaiden is way to hard for me to even attempt. I've played Dark Souls 1,2, and 3 and Bloodborne but Nioh kicked my ass. I couldn't even kill the first boss. If one Team Ninja game is that brutal I can only imagine what the rest are like. Mad props to those that can master these games, seriously.
Let’s hope that rumored Ninja Gaiden collection sparks some interest bringing the series back. They’re real good fun, even Razor’s Edge has its merits.
Hi from 2022. It fuckin' is!
They have an opportunity to really draw in fans from all eras by using the gameplay of the newer NG2, but with the story of the original NES trilogy.

Alright.
Ninja Gaiden 4.
You need 3 recipes :
- Doom 2016 like story, and when I say that I mean the WAY THEY DID IT, it means the fewest possible, with the lore in codex or whatever.
- DMC like cinematics (Without the goofy stuff, just action scenes mostly)
- Mix all past gameplay systems (Ultimate move NG2 system with orbs absorbing, counter NG3 system) with on the fly weapon switching.
Ok but where's Master & Ult Ninja
It's been awhile since I watched your channel! But I'm glad you covered this game! It was hell for me to enjoy!
13:30 Sadly Rachel gets no love in that list
Should have mentioned the amount weapons and Ninpo from 2 compared to 3. Vanilla 3 launched with ONE, yes, ONE weapon and one ninpo, no charge moves, etc. It was completely and utterly gutted compared to NG2.
Check the lists
While story heavy stuff doesn't work great in the games, I would love if they did a tie-in anime or comic for Ninja Gaiden. Something like the DMC anime would be great.

After the Nioh games, i do have faith in them to make another great Ninja Gaiden game, even without Itagaki.
What happened: EA Madden post-2012 (maybe EA in general)
What Keeps Happening: Yandere Simulator (Developer keeps getting stuck in scandal and can't code well)
What happened: Castlevania post Lords of Shadow 2 (that seems to have killed the franchise until the Netflix Castlevania saved it)
I never played Ninja Gaiden 3 but I do remember playing the demo for it and thinking "this ain't right" and then I remember playing the demo for Razor's Edge afterwards thinking "ah this much better." The demos are based around the first missions of the game so it's like right out of the gate you can tell how much better one is than the other.
I’d be interested in seeing you do one on Jak: The Lost Frontier

Itagaki is probably the most competent ideas man I've seen in game development. He knew exactly what he wanted form his games, and he had a team that he knew could bring his vision to life. When he got booted, both parties were heavily affected, Itagaki no longer had a talented team to work with, resulting in shit like Devil's Third, and Team Ninja was left without a competent leader for a really really long time until they finally got their shit together, reasulting in, well, Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden's current state.
