I remember when I was really sick and told my landlady I'm not feeling well, she bought me some pills, checked on me from time to time to make sure I took the pills and drank enough liquids. The guys who worked in a parking lot put a rain cover on my motorbike. The woman who had a small street food stall in the middle of an alley near my house brought me some food cuz she knew I was sick and couldn't go out. They really made me feel at home :)
I had a similar experience. When I got married my husband was offered a job in Germany. Our landlady was so nice, she has a son that's around our age so we were just an extension of her family. I was sick with the flu and my husband was in London that week. I answered the door probably looking horrible, she came back with medicine and chicken soup. I'll never have a good one like her, she took really good care of us.
You make looking at apartments and learning fun. I'm gonna try to study Chinese a bit. You've just started Vietnamese and are progressing already. Impressive
so excited that you found an apartment that you really love! can't wait for the tour when you are ready! right now on my list of thing's to do, I'm trying to learn Mandarin. seeing you progress learning Vietnamese has me feeling confident!
same here, I don't have a teacher yet! right now I'm trying out flashcards, apps and trying to work out the words I see on signs, but I'm hoping to get a teacher when i can. good luck to you too!
I think that you have pleasant experiences no matter where you go because you are so open. a lot of people have bad experiences that they bring on themselves. your smile makes people want to know you.
have you tried bargaining on the rent when you realize that a landlord is overcharging? your apartment looks super top secret. haha. yes, that's the way to learn a language, in my experience. what i would do in the future if i have a chance to live abroad again is just go through an audio course on my own, and then learn on the ground based on need to know. as americans, we're privileged if we grew up with more than one language and also have the experience of learning and using an additional language. our minds can really integrate new languages in a way that so many monolingual americans and others cant. that's so awesome that the language is starting to come together for you. congratulations!
Yes the lady said if I pay multiple months in advanced she could discount but she wanted me to pay a year upfront. I was only willing to pay 2-3 months at a time.
I am glad my parents can't speak English very well. This forces me to speak Vietnamese to them which makes me fluent but I am sad that my nephews can't speak Vietnamese at all! Because we only speak to them in English. 😩
Mike Le I see what you mean. My kids are learning languages at age 18 and 23. I am learning also. Hopefully your nephews will realize the value of learning a language. Best wishes.
It’s never too late. Charlycheer learned Korean and she wasn’t a child when she learned. It’s possible but it won’t be easy. But honestly, sometimes the best things in life aren’t easy to get
How often do you guys switch apartments ? It seems like only a few months in each place. I can understand, I live in Bangkok and my first 3 places were based upon where I worked but now I have been in the same building for 2 years, comfortable but I always get the urge to look at new places, it's an addiction.
We've switched twice in the 1 year of living here. First she found a place after our first apartment together. Then I moved into hers temporarily and now that I found a place it is also my 2nd.
Not really. The owner of each apartment has to pay to register you into the government's system as living there and I believe they pay an extra fee or something for foreigners but on our part it's very easy and maybe even easier for foreigners. I can't say for sure though. Any Vietnamese people can comment their thoughts.
Hi Charly! Have a question :-) Where exactly did you get your knee pads and elbow pads? I am looking for some good ones but can't find really... If you have the link please let me know :-) Thank you!
I have a place like that almost identical to the first one you showed complete with dirty walls and childs drawings hh. in HCMC with similar views. I only pay 8 million furnished and way better proper kitchen. Definitely a foreigner price
Love your vlog. Language barrier is kinda upset me..Even I try to speak the tones. For Vietnamese they still sound different..I gave up learning it. :(
Not so much the scams but sometimes you try to help them then they turn around and try to scam you. Case in point two guys walking around with shoe shine came up to me to shine my shoes. I told them I don't need a shoe shine. Then kept asking. Felt sorry for them. in the end they wanted 450,000,000.00 dongs. Gave them less. What ever happened to doing a shoe shine for a reasonable price that way they get lots more customers than scamming people then no one will ever want a shoe shine in Vietnam ever again?

Wow, are the locals really so awesome? :D

You seem sweet. People mistake that for naivety. Congrats on the new place!
Charly, yes we would love an apartment tour! Congratulations on your new place as well!
Yay you found a place!! Apartment tour next!!!
Love this video! You are the first video I have seen where a "Traveller" made an attempt to immerse themself into the culture. Keep up the great work.
So proud of you! Your Vietnamese is right on. I have no problem understanding you at all.

you seem like a great person
So cruel to blur it out like that! Lol yes a tour 😁😁
You may have mentioned this in a separate vid, but what brings you (and Annie) to Vietnam? Are you teaching - something else? Just curious.
I am glad my parents can't speak English very well. This forces me to speak Vietnamese to them which makes me fluent but I am sad that my nephews can't speak Vietnamese at all! Because we only speak to them in English. 😩
Mike Le It's not too late to teach them. Give it a try.
Kelly Royds It’s too late. They are in their 20’s. 😩

Those Apartments aren't bad at all especially the one that was built with bricks and inside as like a temple.
ChariotManVideos
They are going for a New York loft look...!!!
Best place to buy is bike pawn shop. We got one there but way in the south. Near cambodia
Charly the apt you choose is so cheap! Do you have to do anything different as a non citizen of Vietnam to rent an apartment?
Not really. I love Star!
The view is great.
Great video. How's the insulation? Is there cement between floors or hardwood?
What website do you use for apartment hunting?
I just put the agent I use in the description, the Vietnamese fb group and the Vietnamese version of Craigslist.

Nice apartment 👍
I from Texas. I don’t know if it’s bad or not. But usually I keep my ears open and hear some one in need of money. I buy there bike on the low low
I've been following your channel for awhile!
Love your vlog. Language barrier is kinda upset me..Even I try to speak the tones. For Vietnamese they still sound different..I gave up learning it. :(
You know as for your bike problem ... you can buy a new bike for 1500.00
It is a nice story
Nice vid
I'm confused a bit if u and Annie are involved and in love why do you both want to live apart?
Because I don't believe just because you love each other means living together should be the default. Sometimes living separate is healthier.
Your question shows your very Asian mindset. Her apartment search demonstrates her North American mindset.
