We are getting a lot of really strange yet funny comments from non-Vietnamese people on this video stating that we should “just give the money away” or “$8 is nothing to you”. We find these comments to be unbelievably naive and strange. Also, if people are honest with us, we would be very happy to pay a lot more and freely advertise local business. If you’re travelling anywhere in the world as a human being, you should respect yourself enough to not be robbed or scammed because someone might have less than you. Going by these principles, anyone in the world who has less than someone else should have the right to do anything they want?!? Ever heard of morality and principles? Or following the rule of law?

Sorry Mad for having a sad experience in Hanoi, I'm South Korea and also had a pretty sad experience in Vietnam. The Central and Southern people are friendly and serve Korean people very attentively, so I really love them. Central and Southern people!

I can’t believe it 1 plate broken rice and grilled meat for 1 million đồng they’re cheating tourists people 😂😂😂😂😂
I just returned from Vietnam a few days ago and it has been my third trip. The fruit lady trying to sell a few plums for 200000 Dong wasn’t a new thing. It has happened to me all the time during my Vietnam travel. If Vietnam wants to attract more visitors they have to stop exploiting and punishing tourists this way and tourism authorities must educate their public not to exploit the visitors who bring money to their country.. Sometimes ordinary roadside sellers mercilessly charge enormous amounts for produce they sell and often they become violent when you refuse. If a local pays 20000 Dong for a kg. of mango, tourist has to pay 80000 Dong. Some times you want to purchase things in-order to help these class of people but soon you tend to regret by doing so. Cheating and overcharging the tourists have become widespread throughout Vietnam and beware of such things when you purchase things from the streets and markets.
Totally agree. I also had quite bad experience with a Vietnamese tour guide from a tour company owned by Vietnamese government. Even the government is not honest and treats tourists badly, we don’t expect much from their sellers and ordinary people in this country. Their airport custom officers are always rude and cold and ask for money. I heard many stories that Vietnamese airport custom officers always demand money fromChinese tourists before allowing them in. Too much that Chinese embassy in Vietnam has to warn Chinese tourists coming to Vietnam and has to ask Vietnam government to solve this problem. Chinese tourists have been complaining why they always treat Chinese unfairly this way. Many Chinese tourists have been so fed up and turned their back on Vietnam and go to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore instead. So the numbers of Chinese tourists visiting Vietnam has dropped significantly. Many Vietnamese are not friendly to Chinese people. I often read comments about Vietnam people badmouthing Chinese tourists but they said they want money from Chinese tourists because Chinese tourists are willing to spend the most. I visited Vietnam once and never want to come back to this country.
Where did this happen to you? In the north or the south?
This even happen to Vietnamese ! Thương bất chính hạ tất loạn !
@@haniahannslew4108I’m sure you exaggerated because of your hate against Vietnam being a Chinese, as usual. And no, per official statistics, Chinese tourists are far from being the ones who spend the most in Vietnam. Don’t lie to jerk yourself off. They are Filipinos, Koreans, Japanese and other Europeans.

As a Vietnamese, I had the same situation with my Dutch husband in Hanoi. I was really sad when a fruit seller on the street asked my husband to try first, and sold a pineapple which costs $10. Currently, the economy is down turning in Vietnam. The sellers are desperate for any customers. The same for China.
This particular woman was trying to rip off tourists thinking it's easy. Unfortunately not this time.
I visited Vietnam in 2005 and the vast majority of people I came across on the street were exactly like that auntie. It really put me off Vietnam. Fast forward 2024 on a recent trip the country was different. The security guard is a youngish guy and his generation are more educated. Vietnam had changed beyond recognition and the younger generation are very kind and had no issues.
@@ChrisLivingInYork Sure, Vietnam now had changed so much, and everything is much better.
@@ChrisLivingInYork They have to clean those messes up to keep you guys the tourists coming. Still the effects of communism exist there. Next time, look around and see government lottery ticket sellers walking around the crowds, especially the restaurant and market areas, to bug people to buy the lottery tickets from them. These are the very poor people, and they earn a small percent commission from selling these tickets because there are no other jobs available for them. The other thing can happen to you, or you can witness is robbery. You will see groups of people pursuing robbers on high speed bikes even during day light. These are ordinary citizens risking their lives to catch the robbers for fame which leads to money while the police (aka Cong An) cares less.
These constant social problems are a huge burden for the communist regime. They may not frequently occur in the high tourist areas because the government may impose higher or heavy fines if caught in these areas, but outside of the tourist areas, they occur much more frequently. You can't leave your bikes or your belongings out of sight too long. More brazenly, they grab your bags, purses, phones, jewelry right from your hand or neck. There are many cases when victims got injured and died from falling off their bikes while driving and being robbed.
My advice is that you need to be very careful in Vietnam. Enjoy the fun but be highly vigilant.
Enjoy Hà Nội! Luv from Họ Chỉ Mình City. Great video

Only one apple are you serious? i think alot more than that foreigners travel alone in vietnam without a local guide should be cautious
An auntie from the rural suburbs came to Hanoi to sell rural products around the streets with fresh fruits without listed prices or clear labels. You absolutely do not buy without knowing the selling prices. Before buying, you should ask carefully how much the selling price is for 1Kg. A security guard (a private security service of the store opposite) told her that " the Vietnam apple selling price of 1Kg was worth only 50K and she should not cheat foreign customers anymore. That is very embarrassing for Vietnamese in the eyes of foreign tourists". The Vietnamese government allows local people to do business on the streets to make a living, but there are some street vendors (without business registration and a fixed business location) who take advantage to be greedy. . That affects the image of Vietnam tourism.
Thank you for your support ❤️🇻🇳 we love Vietnam locals overall

Vietnam is my favorite country. People there are super warm and friendly. I've been there a third time this past February. I hope this experience didn't ruin it for you.
You are an amazing couple ❤
Something similar happened to my fiancé and I when we were in Vietnam last year. In Da Nang, we decided to eat at a mom & pop noodle shop because there were a lot of locals there and it seemed really good. After we finished eating, we went to pay and saw the locals handing over 30,000 VND. When I asked the lady how much for our 2 bowls of soup, she paused and spoke to a man (maybe her husband) and then said 200,000. I was expecting to pay 60,000 since they only served one size and type of soup.I knew right away that they were not honest with me, but I paid them anyways. I understand what you meant when you say some tourists will just pay and walk away, because that was me. My fiancé wanted to question them but I did not want any problems since there was a language barrier. In Sapa, it was even worse but we questioned them this time. These experiences made me distrustful of small Vietnamese shops. Although these experiences left us feeling icky, we found a lot of joy in many other Vietnamese shops throughout our stay in Vietnam. If prices weren't posted, we made sure to always ask for the price before purchasing anything. I feel like it could be the older generation who still has the mentality of ripping off tourists. I experience this in many parts of SEA, but it was most prevalent in Vietnam. The younger generations seem to be more aware and educated on tourism and more likely to be honest. I'm so glad you stood up to that lady because tourists should not be treated this way.
I am a young Vietnamese person, in fact, there are many very good people in the older generation. The older people helped me when I fell off my bike carrying goods, i hope you travel good in Việt Nam.

As citizens of Vietnam, I still faced those crimes as usual. My tips for you: go some crowded shops and ask the price first.

that's so true. its a requirement to have a weight measure and price menu.
As a Chinese who currently living in Japan, I’ve met only nice and honest Vietnamese folks. I believe most people in Vietnam are the same, similar scams can happen anywhere else. I hope to visit Vietnam someday to visit my friends who’ve returned home. Thanks for your fun and honest videos!
btw hope u guys will be back Thailand and join Songkarn festival next month 😊Have all good trips take care❤
We will!☺️☺️☺️
So glad you were able to get your money back from the lady and the security guy came over and told her she's an embarrassment. Very sad to see when people try to rip others off. You 2 look like you are enjoying Vietnam, thanks for sharing the journey and we cannot wait to check the country out ourselves!
I apologize for the negative experiences you two encountered, and hope that you will not let this overshadow the warmth and friendliness of our people. Wishing you a great journey ahead ❤
❤ best wishes from Vietnam
I want to comment. We had an exchange student from Hanoi. We jave had over 20 in the last 25 years. Without a doubt, she was the sweetest, kindest, and most loving girl we have had. She IS part of our family, even though she is back home now. We miss Quay very much. We hope to visit her next year.

Live it up explorers, safe traveling
You two handled that issue very well. You were definitely visibly upset, but you proved that good pastries can fix everything. I'll make sure that I have a back-up pastry with me when I travel. Haha. Honestly though, I'm glad that you shared everything that happened and showed that the great things definitely outweighed your issue with that one vendor. I also loved that you added a haircut and a grab ride to the expenses for the day. Very unique, just like the both of you. I can't wait to visit Vietnam soon.
Hahaha thank you! Yes indeed, pastries save lives!!!

In the market near where I live, there are also some money-hungry people. Even though I'm Vietnamese, I understand their situation, but they shouldn't do that.
And if their situation is difficult or they have illness problems, they will receive charity and help from sponsors.
In the video above, that aunt is thinking that foreigners are stupid and don't know how to change Vietnamese currency. So, that aunt is planning to take money from foreigners, doing so is really losing our Vietnamese culture. 🙄
Well said, it is too easy for foreigners to take the moral high-ground when they are from one of the richest countries in the world... where is the empathy? @@nvjq

Yummy food, happy traveling.
Just a reminder, It's really easy to be honest and dignified individuals when you come from the west or a well-developed country. When you're born and raised in poverty, it is certainly not as easy. I'm not making an excuse for the old lady, but just to put things in perspective to not be easy to judge. We are lucky who are able to be well off enough to travel and experience other cultures. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to help people who you might think are less deserving due to their dishonesty. But if that money doesn't mean a lot to us, then it might be easier just to let it go, see it as charity and have more understanding.
My friend is unemployed and penniless. She stays home and takes care of her elderly mother. She accidentally took a pen from the gas station, she immediately drove half an hour to return it.
No excuses.
In any place around the world, there are always greedy and malicious individuals. As a Vietnamese, I deeply regret the terrible experiences you've had. When you encounter situations like these, scream out and call for the help of passersby, immediately, our people will gladly come to assist you. In fact, they may even help you call the police.

That type of apple is a small apple. Here, early season sales are a bit high. But if it's mid-season, it will be a little lower. As a local person, I can tell you it costs about 20,000 VND - 30,000 VND/1000grs (1kg). Apples as big as tennis balls are called Ninh Thuan Bomb Apples, priced from 45,000 - 55,000 VND/1000grs (1kg).

This video is great because you show a bunch of really pleasant experiences with great and kind people (the haircut was so good tbh), but then you also show the pathetic scammer. I like the objectivity because it shows both the good and the bad side of Vietnam (just like in any country). The impression I get is that Vietnamese ppl in general are very nice, but unfortunately there are always some tourist traps and ppl who just want to profit on tourists. I think compared to Thailand this is still relatively good.
Thank you so much for your support ❤️
I stayed Ha Noi part of the summer of 2018. I was in Old Quarter. I loved it.
Sorry about that dishonest apple seller's behavior. It is recommended that you buy in places where there are many buyers and there are many Vietnamese people there. Any Vietnamese person can help you. Even when eating or buying anything, you need to be very careful. Wishing you a happy trip in our country.

glad you two stand your ground. i hope lots of tourists in Thailand do the same too
i have family in Thailand and we usually go visit every now and then, and i hate the scammy and trickery there
like your pinned comment said "$8 is nothing to you,” but for a Thai person that $8 is almost the daily minimum wage in Thailand. and, i feel that what makes scammers in Thailand so brave like that lady is that they value the money as if it's still in their country and not the standard of living in Thailand, or Vietnam in this situation.
for me, i only take a taxi in Thailand if i really need to. also, about 70% of the time, they negotiate the price and don't put on the meter, and they have ways to cheat you too even if they "agreed" to put on the meter. some drivers have the gall to ask for a tip or if i can give them a US banknote for them to "keep as souvenir" when they already charged me $15-20 for the ride that should cost only $5~

I feel so sorry for your terrible experience with the street vendor lady. What a shame!
Guys, for the sake of clarity and avoiding scammers, please do not afraid to ask for the price before you buy anything.
Preparing amount of different type of VND bills, like 10.000, 20.000, 50.000 VND is also a good idea - it's a bit more convenient to pay by those bills. [In the worst case scenario, if we get scammed, we will lose only a small a mount]
And if you're in some "danger" situations, you can always ask for help from the local people or the police. They are always willing to support you.
Please take very good care, be safe, and enjoy your trip ❤
