Can the basking light be put on the front of a aquarium laying on its side, (aquarium is laying on its side as owner is short and can't get to the bottom if used right side up).
My fiancé gifted a bearded dragon to me this past New Year's Day. I spent days crying, feeling overwhelmed. I know very little about how to care for these. Your videos have not only given me useful information, but also the confidence I needed to care for this little guy. He and I are bonding more and more by the day. Thanks!
I've had my bearded dragon Oobi for 3 years now. Thats how long I've been following you guys lol. I always go back and watch your videos to always remind myself I don't know it all. A refresher course is always a good thing...keep up the great work!!!
Legit i never owned ond but i did love them since i was able to read like tornadoes an many more things. Legit 40 gallon feels small af to me but ive had guinea pigs dogs an im roamer
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the videos! It has been about 30 years since I owned a reptile ( I was a young kid then) I recently rescued a 2 year old Dragon who's owner left her (Freya) with his mother and left state. I said yes without thinking, or preparing for the care (first mistake). Was told everything was included to care for it (2nd mistake believing that). Anyway, your videos were/are great and within a couple days Freya was basking healthy and happy in her upsized, humidity/temp controlled environment. Veggies in the morning and insect treats in the afternoon. We (myself, and our kids) whom we are trying to teach the joy of responsible animal ownership to, seriously are in your debt. Freya is probably the most appreciative as she seems to be happy, healthy, and enjoying being handled without the skeptical look she gave us the first two days. Again, Thank you!! And we will continue to follow you guys, and your videos!!!!!
Thank you so very very much! There has been nothing but confusion, conflicting information, ridiculous amounts of $$ spent on the wrong things till I was about ready to just give up. The setup was given to me as a surprise Birthday gift from my kids (they have had several dragons) along with a gift certificate to choose a dragon from their favorite rescue. They knew I had wanted a dragon of my own for a long time so it was a thrill to receive this loving gift. They live in Montana. I live in soggy, cold Western Oregon. They have indoor ducted heat - I have a wood stove. With the information in this amazing video I went shopping yesterday and today my dragon has the right heat, the right UVB-UVA light, and is prepared to have a nice warmish dark night. Bless you for this straightforward, easily comprehensible video - you probably saved a LOT of scaly little lives when you made this gift for us!
That was very helpful. I’m in the Northeast, so it gets really cold. We also don’t keep our heat above 65 to save $. I need to use a heat source 24 hours a day. Glad to know I can just get a ceramic heat bulb instead of the red light. I’ve always felt the red lights still seemed too bright.
Awesome video, very informative. I just rescued a dragon and his tank is about 6ft long and 1 1/2ft wide. I have a UVB and UVA bulbs that I use for his lighting and basking. Also a ceramic heater for night, I live in Wyoming so it gets very cold. I'm having trouble deciding how to modify his habitat for his best comfort.
I was told I could leave the ceramic heat source on 24/7 and then the UVB 12 on 12 off. Our baby is only about 3 months right now. The house did drop to 70 last night. We currently have a 20 gallon and plan to go to 40 when they grow.
Good morning! Such an important video- just yesterday we adopted our 3rd dragon, it’s been a few months since our approx. 22 year old passed on; and I like to review basics of setting up the terrarium now and then with any changes in environment, behavior, or residency . : ) Lighting is critical for optimum husbandry and health for these critters. Thank you for the clarification on appropriate lighting and the “ok“ on incandescent bulbs for basking light.
no way your bearded dragon was 22.. if so you would of owned the longest living bearded dragon in the world.. 4 years longer than the actual longest living bearded dragon (18 years old) which died in 2016
thanks for that tip bout the light bulb selection when i went to petsmart to get new bulbs i was told those two boxes you showed in the video was one and only best type to use for my dragon
I'm thinking of getting a bearded dragon and sir you have answered all my questions n you are very detailed so thank you for doing what you do you are very much appreciated
This has been by far the most detailed and educative video on lighting for beardies. Thank you so much for your dedication and the hard workers backstage!!🙏🪻
Thank you I know this is a year old but I'm trying to get a bearded dragon and everywhere online makes it so confusing for lighting. I've read I need 3 lights not including the night one which I would only need for winter. Thank you foe making it less complicated
Ok, I have to chime in here, as I am responding, the ceramic night heat is the one that we use for out 2 dragons. As far as the red light, our bigger girl did NOT like it as it would keep her up ALL night.
I use a ceramic bulb because my house is old and gets pretty cold in the rooms my dragons are in. They would drop below 65 so I heat one corner with the heat bulb.
How far should lights be from the top of the cage do you set yours on top or hang them. Mine are hung up but our Baskin area has a hide an branch so the dragons all are close to the top Thank You for all the info you share. 🦎🐍
I got a juvenile bereed dragon I am using a 50 gallion aquarium. What is the watts I need for uva and uvb and ceramic bulbs? Thank you for your help. I am upgrading my bereed dragon aquarium. Your videos are very helpful
Okay so this is actually less complicated than it seems, for a basking bulb I use a 100 watt bulb and for uvb I use a 24 watt t5 12% uvb HO bulb from Arcadia
The best video ive see so far yhat explains everything so well. I do have one question i have a deep heat project or bulbs is that ok to use or not. Im building my enclosure from a 50in dresser i have but i have been confused on the heat needed. Would love any input.😊
Our home drops below 70 degrees at night and I have wondered if I needed a ceramic emitter for Puff the Magic Dragon at night. Thanks for this video. I have a spare and will be adding it to his tank this evening. I also have the thermostat for it as well. Do you recommend using that with the emitter?
Coil UVB lights have proven to be inefficient for the penetration depth needed by a bearded dragon due to the wavelength of UV light the bulb produces... Basically your dragon would need to be sitting a few inches beneath it to receive any benefit from it
This is a very good comment, and thank you for submitting it. It is true when using cheaply made UVB lights (like some available on Amazon. There is one popular brand that caused some health issues in dragons about a decade ago too. However, that is why we did not recommend that brand. A good brand of lighting (such as the one we use in the video) when placed directly above the basking site is going to be fine. BUT! We still recommend that a bearded dragon be taken outside during warm weather to enjoy the perks of NATURAL SUNLIGHT, as it is better than ANY BRAND of artificial lighting that we have ever heard of.
I use a basking light in the daytime and ceramic heat emmiter at night so mine has a day and night cycle. The night temperature doesn't have to be nearly as high
Hi (sorry for my english) I have my first bearded dragon and your videos are the best for me because you describe the care of bearded dragons simply even for foreigner like me. Can you please make a video of diseases of bearded dragons and the treatment? I think the most frequent disease like cold for example and treatment in the start of disease before it will be necessary to go to the vet. Thank you so much 💙
I use a 'Evergreen' Mercury vapor bulb that emits both UVA & UVB light and a good amount of heat for basking. Temps are in the 90's in the basking spot and 80's on the opposite end of dragon's tank. (I also use a temperature gun to shoot temps). Are there any disadvantages with this type of bulb? Great video team! keep 'em coming.
Ultraviolet radiation burns from high intensity mercury vapor light bulbs are a public health concern, so I tend to avoid them. If the mercury bulbs are not used correctly, then there is a risk that they will explode, releasing mercury vapour into the room. There was a school in our area that banned their use in the school district, so I have always been weary of them. Also a zoo that I once worked at would not use them either.
I got a beardie about 4 months ago someone was rehoming. She’s about 20in maybe a little more, and pretty large. She eats veggie in the day and super worms usually at night. She came with a basking light, uv light, hammock backing tunnel rock and a carpet flooring. She was in a glass 40 gallon but I recently bought her the ecoflex 51 gallon tank. She seem fine mostly never really shows weird behavior unless the ceiling fan is on ( the bird effect) I believe. I spray her with water, make sure we spend time with her but sometime I worry she’s missing something or needing something more???!?!? She was already family oriented with other animals and kids. Do beardies get sad? Should she be allowed to roam? She’s very chill, cool and calm but is there anything you could chime in on? Should I be doing more? I’m in Texas and our weather is up and down so at night I do turn a heater on in the room just to help keep it dropping to low. I also have her own schedule so her basking lamp goes off at about 9pm and back on at about 9am. Should she be put in a more social place in the house? So many question, sorry to over load just trying to do right by beardie!
Why are you misting your dragon? You can cause upper respiratory infections in dragons that stay wet; that's why when they get baths you dry them really well and you keep their cage at a certain humidity that's low. There's no reason to mist your baby. Spray his or her salad every day with water so he or her gets their hydration; don't have it standing in water just a gentle mist. You can drop water on the tip of their nose with a dropper if you are worried about them drinking water and they will drink that way.
Hello! I'm a bit confused about the need for daytime and nighttime heating bulbs when using the ceramic heater. Couldn't the ceramic bulb be the day and night heat? I got my first dragon (and reptile 😱) yesterday, and I'm looking to upgrade the gear he came with. I got a tube uvb bulb, and was thinking I just needed the ceramic bulb for heat day and night.
I live in the northeast and I have the double dome with the basking light and CHE and then a tube UVB. I think i may have to upgrade to 150 watt for the basking though. The CHE stays on all night.
Wil having a ceramic and red bulb on at night when it's cold be an issue? Also during the day I have the ceramic on and the UVB. Are these issues? New to bearded dragons and I don't want to hurt it
I usually try to avoid red bulbs since dragons can still see that light and may believe that it is still day I usually just use the regular basking bulbs and I’ve during the day and turn them off at night they don’t need to be too warm at night
I have my young bearded dragon in a front opening 40 breeder as a temporary enclosure. My house stays 70°-72° at all times. I had a 100 watt zoomed basking light but had to go up to a 150 watt to get the basking spot to 100°-105°. I use a CHE for night time heat at a much lower temperature.
Thanks you sir this help me out a ton I live in Vegas and I gets cool at night but I don’t think I need a night time hear source I’m going to see what temp his or her tank is in the morning hopefully it’s not below 70 degrees but if so what should I use because the tank I have is the big wooden one with the front sliding doors and two built in light fixtures so how would I go about night time heat source if need be? I would love if you can respond at your earliest convenience
Very good video and info. This may be a dumb question but i am in a position that i need night time heat, would simply replacing his basking light with a red bulb and having the UVB light in a dual fixture work? I would keep red bulb on all day and UVB on for about 12 hours a day? Is there a difference between a basking light and the red bulb type? This is the last bit of info i need to complete my setup. Thanks in advance.
I use a heat lamp/basking light and a uvb bulb and the largest cage I can get with front door I keep my apartment at 70 degrees so I don't use anything at night unless it gets extremely cold out then I use a ceramic heating element
Hello- I have been hearing conflicting claims about the screen on top of the cage. People have told me that I need to keep it covered with aluminum foil to keep the heat in. If the humidity percentage is the 50-60% do I need to cover it? Thanks so much!
I understand the need to have UVB and the idea of UVB being available across the length of the vivarium, but I have also seen that the BD needs to have a place to escape UVB lighting during the day, hence the use of the dome fixture. The FB page I am on is adamant that the linear pole light be used as the BD does not benefit from the dome type. Also, I use the moonlight bulb to provide heat to the vivarium at night. Is that moonlight bulb ok, or should a ceramic bulb be used if I am looking to maintain heat rather than provide any light? Thanks so much!
How do you breed dubia roaches? I have my first bearded dragon and have had him for 6 months and keep having to buy crickets and most of the time they die anyways.
Use a large tub with a heatmat. Dubias like it warm.. Temps in the 90's are oke for breeding.. Feed them greens and fruits like apple and oranges every day.. The will breed for you..
My 6th grade students did research and wrote a bearded dragon manual to convince our administrators to allow us to buy one for a class pet. It’s not even a year old yet and it’s outgrown 2 enclosures. We can’t afford the 4x2x2, so we were going to make one out of an old dresser. All the videos we see don’t include a mesh top, which I worry about too much humidity. can you offer any advice or better instructions on diy. thank you
Thanks for the informative video! I'm getting a beardie sometime this fall, and so far, you're the only channel I can get reliable info from that doesn't make me confused and blow my eardrums out with wacky edits and stuff. Best wishes on your business as well👍
I'm a newbie. I'm going to get a 50 gallon tank my bearded is 18 inches. Watching your video I want to get the double light. Our house is 72 degrees. Please what wattage should I get for the basking light? The other you said an incident no led, so wattage on that also? Thank you
Ok so I’m slow it says compact uva and at the bottom it says uvb so please explain I’ll be back for comments or another vid 🙏🏼 thanks for the advice so far 😊
I plan to make an enclosure out of an old dresser for a bearded dragon that will be 65 in long, 28 in tall, and 20 in deep. I need to know what type of lighting setup would be best for an enclosure this size. It will be kept in a basement apartment that stays cooler than the rest of the house. In winter it never drops below 60 to my knowledge...I like to sleep with it cooler. Once I have the enclosure built I will get a bearded dragon. I am doing tons of research now. Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.
I’m in love with your stubby tailed bearded dragon on the site. But unfortunately i’m still doing research and getting stuff together for one in the future so he probably won’t be around. Wanted to know if there was a chance a stubby tailed dragon would happen again they have my whole heart
I have a 40 gallon tank for my baby bearded dragon with a 12% Arcadia HO 22 inch light. There's also a high branch tree and hammock thats super close to the mesh lid and he likes to go to the top of it. Is that ok? It's that too much uvb? Also what is the correct basking spot temperature for a baby bearded dragon as well as the ambient temperature in the hot side of the tank? THANK YOU!!! I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS! I've learned sooo much!!!❤
It’s most likely the opposite, too little uvb if the hammock is close to the end of the uvb tube it is most likeely getting a very low amount of uvb! The uvb gets weaker the further you go from the middle. He also might be basking there because the uvb gives off a lot of light and he believes that that is his basking spot
hello, thanks a lot for your video. It was the more detailed video about lightning and heat that I found. I just need to ask for some advice (I'm new to bearded dragon breeding). I have a 75x40x40 PCV terrarium with the lights putted inside, but at the moment it only has the UVB on during the day (the ceramic is off because at night is 28ºC). I don't even have UVA because they didn't tell me, and the dragon is 3 months old. What is the safe distance to have the lightning UVB & UVA putted at safe distance from him so he can't burn? Best regards and thanks for the help if possible
My question is can we change the day/night cycle for our new bearded dragon. My spouse and I have recently been assigned different shifts at work. So ideally, leaving the basking light on at night works for us (it serves as my source of light while he sleeps) and turning it off and leaving the UV on as a source of heat. I’m worried if this is unhealthy for our little guy to switch his day/night cycle? Years ago, I had a ball python which I made some similar mistakes with heat/light source. It made him quite aggressive. I do not want to make mistakes with our new little “King Lizzie”
Hi guys I'm new to the reptile community and I want a bearded dragon so should I get a baby or an adult bearded dragon and can you make a 2022 guide and I want to know what temperatures it should be and what and what enclosure can I have for a baby and a adult I just wanted to know the size of the cage what food I should buy and other car routines. I really enjoy your videos and I'm from south africa
Question: I open my bearded dragons enclosure and let him come an go during the day as I work from home. Sometimes he goes off and lays under the couch or under a door into a closet. I usually go get him and bring him back to the UVB/basking after a half an hour but he keeps taking off. If I lock him in he glass surfs and get agitated. I saw 8-12 hours of UVB in needed. Should I just lock him in the enclosure? Thanks.
Curious to know, i have a couple plastic perches, that stand up pretty tall, close to the top of the terrarium, can i still leave the lights sitting right on top, or do i have to keep the lights a certain distance away? I know the closer they are the more beneficial it is for them, but i just dont want it getting too hot in there
Hi! I was told by ppl in a dragon Facebook group that if I didn't get the long UVB light and a 40 gallon tank that he would get MBD very quickly. Is this true. He isn't in a 40 gallon at the moment. He's in a 10 gallon (he's a baby. Like 1 month old) so he's tiny. But he will be getting a 40 gallon soon.
I don’t have the double fixture or the light bulb for the whole cage for the uvb. I just have one single fixture for the basking light and one single fixture for the uvb light. So where would that go?
Try to place them as close together as possible, a mistake almost all beginners make (including myself) is making a basking spot and uvb spot on the opposite sides of the tank which is no bueno! Dragons don’t want to pick and choose whether they want uvb or heat so always have them as close together as possible
My bearded dragon is 2 months old and I have it in a 40 gallon tank and need advice on what kind of lighting I need so it can get enough vitamin d. Please help
I have just bought a bearded dragon with this exact type of enclosure. Is it safe to put the bulbs directly on top of the cage even though it is mesh? Or should I hang them
It should be perfectly fine leaving them on top however some screens (the mesh part) can affect how much uvb actually reaches your dragon so make sure to check if your dragon can receive the proper amount of uvb
I got my bearded dragon about 3 months ago just to find out yesterday that she needs a wayyyy bigger tank given she’s fully grown. I was thinking about getting a 120 gal. tank, would a 150 watt heat light be too much heat for her?
Some of the groups I'm in on Facebook talk about halogen bulbs on a dimmer switch. What do you think about that option? I'm upgrading my dragons tank to a pvc 4x2x2 and just want the best for him, but I'm still a new keeper. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. I recently got my first beardie from a rehomkng situation and even though I researched how to properly house him, and he came with heat, UVB, and even a ceramic heat emitter, it's nice to have someone remind you of the required heating and lighting. What do you think of the powerful Solarglo all in one heat + UVB bulbs from Exo-Terra? I have been eye-balling them at my local exotics pet store.
Years ago, the zoo that I worked at would not use them. I was never told why, but they simply did not trust them. I have to admit that I have never looked into them but I always thought that if a zoo wouldn't use 'em, I probably shouldn't either.
If you're able, get yourself a solarmeter, 6.5R so you can actually measure how much UVB is coming out of your bulbs. It was a total game changer for me.
Question: could I just use a ceramic heating element instead of a basking bulb? Lighting from the UVB tube light would still provide sufficient light and vitamin for the beardie.
I have the bulbs that come in a 40g tank could you recommend some good thermometers/hydrometer. Mine are set in 4 different places and I'm not sure how accurate they are. It's a small bearded dragon no more then 5.5inchs long
Hey I had a question, so my setup came with a a “naturalistic terrarium hood”, it looks like the hood you had for the longer UVB light just much shorter. Can I use that so I can have a spot for a basking bulb and ceramic heater in my dual fixture? And if the short hood is okay to use, where should I put it? Right now it’s kind of in the middle/ on the cool side
If you are having a hard time getting your dragon to eat salad, we have a solution.

Great information! Easy to follow & feel confident about the biggest thing to keep bearded dragons alive & healthy.
So if a UBV lamp lights up an entire enclosure then I don't need to install additional regular lights? Just a UVB + heat lamp?

To be honest the worst problem with a bearded dragon like most reptiles is calcium deficiency make sure you give them a calcium supplement
Bearded dragons can have a lot of issues. Is your dragon sick?
@@ColdBloodCreations Thanks guys. much appreciated.
My female dragon loves watching Aquarium videos on youtube, and my male loves watching out the window (he's in a glass tank). They do need enrichment.
Mine loves being in front of the window and watches the kids and cars outside but afraid in Nebraska it’s going to get to cold by the window.
I have a 80w deep heat projector ir-a ir-b aswell as uvb light in a 4x2x2 in the uk would this be sufficient
No you need a basking light . they are drawn to the bright basking bulb they have a 3rd eye in the center of their heads that needs bright lights.
I live in the northeast and I have the double dome with the basking light and CHE and then a tube UVB. I think i may have to upgrade to 150 watt for the basking though. The CHE stays on all night.
Great videos thank you. If I keep my home at 73 in Florida what watt bulb would you recommend for both lights
Thanks so much I’ve watched a few of your video’s and you’ve been such a big help👍👍👍
When the bearded dragon is brumating, do we still do the same type of lighting? Thank you so much.
Thank you for this video ! Its very helpful & informative. I appreciate this a lot.
Glad it was helpful!
Proper and most up-to-date uvb placement is this
Is not accoss the tank by one end or other with the basking light
Thanks you sir this help me out a ton I live in Vegas and I gets cool at night but I don’t think I need a night time hear source I’m going to see what temp his or her tank is in the morning hopefully it’s not below 70 degrees but if so what should I use because the tank I have is the big wooden one with the front sliding doors and two built in light fixtures so how would I go about night time heat source if need be? I would love if you can respond at your earliest convenience
thank you Teacher your video so much helpful. Learning before have my Bearded Dragon
Happy to help! Good luck with your beardie.
Very very helpful video! Love, from Brunei 🇧🇳
Awesome! Thank you!
Based on my research, I don't think it's necessary to have the ceramic heating unless it gets below 70.
Best wishes on your business as well👍
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you so much for making these videos! I've a question however, does that all apply to dwarf bearded dragons?
I'm a newbie. I'm going to get a 50 gallon tank my bearded is 18 inches. Watching your video I want to get the double light. Our house is 72 degrees. Please what wattage should I get for the basking light? The other you said an incident no led, so wattage on that also? Thank you
Ok so I’m slow it says compact uva and at the bottom it says uvb so please explain I’ll be back for comments or another vid 🙏🏼 thanks for the advice so far 😊
Thank you very much that was helpful!!!👍👍👍
You're welcome!
Great information still learning from Carrollton Georgia
Very cool!
loved the video, veryyy helful, but.... the blooper was the best part😂
How would you recommend lighting a 5x2x2 cage? Been looking at the t5 or t8 tube style not sure what to get
T5 is usually better and lasts longer!
Wonderfully informative, thank you
Our pleasure!
I’m in love with your stubby tailed bearded dragon on the site. But unfortunately i’m still doing research and getting stuff together for one in the future so he probably won’t be around. Wanted to know if there was a chance a stubby tailed dragon would happen again they have my whole heart
They are rare here, but anything is possible...
Are tank heating pads or space heaters for night time heating appropriate for bearded dragons?
hello, thanks a lot for your video.
So can you have the double side light with the uvb light being 10.0 and also with the long uvb like can u have all of that together on?❤❤
Hi, I'm sorry if you have explained this already but what are your thoughts on excavator clay for a bearded dragon?
How about just shelf liner? Way easier to keep clean and no risk of accidental ingestion.
I would say that no matter what keep his light on at day and leave it off at night(both the uvb and basking bulb).
It helped me a lot, thank you.
You're welcome!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Arcadia ThermalZooPro. It’s a bit costly in the USA right now but would still appreciate any feedback on it.
Thank you for this video, it was very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks.
Hi! Awesome videos and info! Thank you!
ty for addressing the northeast weather
Should I use a light tray that has all three basking, uvb, and night light or just separate lights
I just got a baby bearded dragon and living in Savannah I'm having a hard time keeping his humidity levels in the right zone. Any tips?
This is the best video .. thank you
So nice of you.
So is it alright to have a uvb and heat bulb in a double fixture, and another fixture with a heat bulb on the opposite time?
Please help
Should the uvb tube light be overlapped with the heat only on basking side
Lighting from the UVB tube light would still provide sufficient light and vitamin for the beardie.
yes. You can do that.
Should I brush my bearded dragon's teeth and if so how? Also what does it mean if my beaded dragon isn't eating much at all.
Thank you for making this video 🤩
