this is honestly the easiest to follow video i’ve been able to find🥹 i’ve been driving myself crazy trying to get my head around lighting with adhd lol thank you so much for this!
Yay! I finally found an Aussie content creator on reptiles. I've been looking at getting my first reptile but its hard to follow along some care guides when they're talking about American products used with reptiles we dont keep as pets here. Keen to learn! 💪
Really great display of lighting information that all new keepers should watch, i would say that the halogen lights are more expensive but last longer than the cheap stuff at big bunns and output more heat per watt also saving money long term!
Good to see you mention the Reptile Lighting group! More people "should" be in there 😊. Also want to add: the Advanced Herpetology Husbandry group and for ball/royal pythons: Not Just A Pet Rock group.
Great video. Clear, concise and great infographics used to illustrate your points clearly. (Boom, I'm suddenly turning into a teacher marking an assignment! 😅😅) My only criticism: night time heat - is it needed? When there's overhead infrared coming from a lamp during the day, that heats up objects, which retain IR-C well into the night. I suppose it depends on the setup. Setups with shallower substrates, less rocks etc and the varying sizes may cool down quicker than those with deeper substrates, more space for rocks and clutter that retain secondary heat from above via IR-C. Does providing heat at night (as in infrared A, through a DHP), interfere with their circadian rhythm? Generally, well insulated homes should provide enough warmth for their night time needs without having to use additional heat sources?
Good point! It’s very rare I use heat at night in any of my animals homes but I am lucky In that I’m in Australia and it doesn’t get below freezing where I live!
Thanks for the information. Total helped take some stress out with my first reptile set up ( bearded Dragon). I got him a 230 gallon enclosure I am trying to figure it all out.😅
Yes it can link together with those! It produces a bit less light then a jungle dawn because it only has a single row of diodes whereas the jungle dawn would have 3 or 4. I’d have jungle dawns on everything if I could but I need to save some money haha!
Very informational video! Glad to see you still making good content. (Better than all the BS clickbait you see…) Also wanted to comment on the LED UV’s. I’ve been using the VivTech brand lamps for my snakes, still giving a good UVI reading after 2 years!
Hi mate, love the vid however I’m still wrapping my head around it. My son has a baby Murray river turtle. We have the same light clip things as you (attached to your tank in the back). We have the uvb light however I’m struggling with the heat lamp. The petshop gave us a red bulb heat lamp but if I’m understanding correctly that isn’t right for their basking light? Our turtle doesn’t bask as of yet, he sits on the edge still in the water but hasn’t gone any further than that. I’m assuming it’s because of the wrong bulb? This is all so confusing, reading and hearing different things but you sound like you know your stuff hence my question haha. think I’ll add that group too. Honestly any help would be appreciated from anyone 😅😅
@brittanyw6087v hey mate a red bulb is a heat lamp for sure. The only thing is it produces only red light. It is missing all the other colours that would be in daylight. It is more appropriate to use a daylight basking lamp. If you are getting lamps from a pet shop it would be something like a “exo terra intense basking spot” lamp. For a small turtle you would only require a small wattage such as 50w at an appropriate distance for the basking area to reach mid 30s Celsius.
Great breakdown! Do you have a reccommendation on LED then in terms of placement? For my 36" long, should I only place a 12" led on the one warm side and nothing on the left cool side? Or is LED lighting the one exception where it should stretch across the whole length of the enclosure? Big thanks from the US!
Yeah LED can go along the whole tank if you like. It is most important that the heat and UV cross over as the reptile needs both together to properly utilise.
Do you have any other recommendations for a Blue Tongue Skink setup. Mine is long and low so I am going to use an Arcadia T5 6% UVB D3 Forest a Philips 100 watt and an LED.
My anole gets the old 12% from my bearded dragon. I also replaced the fine screen with hardware cloth since I didn't have it inside. My cats never care when bsf escape!
hi, id like some help on finding a good uvb source and basking light for my baby tortoises. i will get a mercury vapor lamp since my halogen has questionable uvb output. says on the box and amazon description but no proof. i will also get a long t8 bulb like the one you have. but i want to know if my halogen bulb is alright, since it has a good temperature for basking, but no proof of uv. thanks
What light is required for crocodile hatchlings, I have just got myself 2 saltwater crocodile hatchlings & now want to make sure I get the best light. If you can’t help me can you please point me in the right direction . Regards Allen 👍
So don't use CFL bulbs if your enclosure is too big? Could you possibly show how you'd arrange full light spectrum light, uv light and a heating element? Oh well that answers that. So keep them as close together as possible. Now that I think about it it makes sense.
Good stuff to know. I took my Arcadia that I had on my bready and moved it to my box turtles after having it on the bready for a year so good to hear that they are still getting uvb from it just not as strong. This is what I wondered about so thanks for this one show on lighting. 😃 GOD BLESS from America 🦎💖🐸💖🐍💖🐢💖
@@coopsreptiles2588agree, if you have to, split the price of a solarmeter with friends. I will say my dragons and anole have two basking spots with one being a dhp, they choose that over half the time.

Hey Alex! That’s cool mate! I’m certainly excited to get LED UVB down the track. Here in Australia there isn’t much option for them at the moment
Awesome vid
Super informative thank you so much
Just ordered the arcadia 34W jungle dawn for my snake tank. He/She will be a nocturnal snake (spotted python) so will I still need UV-B for the snake?
I give mine UVB and see her use it semi regularly so it can certainly provide benefits!
Great info mate. Thanks 👌

When you buy a UVB lamp, do they usually come with the reflector and hood too? Or jus the lamp? I would really appreciate an answer.

yes dont rely on heat lamps for UV. use a dedicated UV lamp like the t8 you mentioned. halogen is great for heat
hey i have a question, what if you use two dome uvb lights? would that still work, or is it still better to get the longer uvb?
The uvb type depends on its use. But for the most part a t5 is going to be the best option we currently have

I would just use the lights I mention in the video. Incandescent heat lamp/ halogen. A t5 uvb bulb and a LED daylight style lamp
