my soon to be 8 year old son has been begging for a bearded dragon after holding a baby beardie and falling in love with it. This sounds like SO MUCH WORK. Thanks for all the info. I'm going to have him wait until he's older and can be more responsible for its daily care and feedings. I can't believe you even have to feed the food. Very admirable for you to do so much work.
I realize this comment is from a year ago, and you might have gotten a Beardie.... But for a child, I'd recommend adopting an adult dragon. They are still a lot of work, but not at all as much work as a baby... They also don't depend on proper care and feedings for proper growth since they are already grown.
I am from Australia and as a kid my friend's mother loved Shingleback lizards so much she had over 20 living with them they didn't have enclosure for them so the lizards would walk around the house, her mother would take them outside to get some sun, if you saw her mother outside in the garden there was always lizards with her, us kids called her The Lizard Lady.
I am so grateful to have found this video! I just brought my baby beardie home and I thought I was prepared but NOPE! I thought he liked me, I pet his head and he closes his eyes but then I read it means he’s scared. I want him to be happy and feel so so safe with me.
i don’t think it means he’s scared, just a bit uncomfortable. a lot of beardies don’t like head petting, mine doesn’t. try stroking the torso instead :)
Love how you have an entire playlist for beardies! I’ve been doing a ton of research for the last 6 months with my littles as we build our dream enclosure for our future beardie!
I'm hoping to get a bearded dragon soon and am doing a lot of research to make sure I know what I'm doing. Your videos have been extremely helpful, thank you!

Yes!thank you so much for bringing up shelf liners. I have a full grown beardie that I have had for a year now, and we tried a lot of different kinds of substrates until we discovered shelf liners while shopping around. Nobody had ever recommended them and now me and my beardie love the cheap, safe and just all around great option😄 we also had MASIVE issues with crickets getting underneath substrate, and you can stick the shelf liners down around the edges and change ....maybe every 2 to 3 months. Also has easy clean up! Would recommend 👌
Shelf liner releases fumes when heated and doesn’t offer any burrowing enrichment, which is very important for beardies. I strongly recommend switching to a suitable loose substrate. A deep layer of a soil/playsand/clay mix is ideal :)

I always provide my 3 beardies with a water dish for them to soak in which they do very much. Luckily I don’t have an issue with the humidity since my room is the warmest in the house and with a lot of air flow.
I use playsand with top soil with about half inch of decomposed granite and they do very well on it no impaction, and they have dug burrows(eventhough hides have been provided)
My best friend just surprised me with a juvenile bearded dragon and I was not prepared. Fortunately I had an old 50 gallon fish tank. Getting it as ready as possible
Keep in mind that he’ll soon need to be upgraded to a 4x2x2’ enclosure bare minimum, and bigger is strongly recommended (many people believe the minimum should be 5x2x3’).
Calcium is necessary for the health of their bones (and to prevent MBD). Multivitamins are also necessary for their health. Supplements should be without d3 since they’ll get all the d3 they need from their UVB. Reptifiles has a good care guide with more information.
I have had two bearded dragons but I had to get rid of one because she got sick she was very old and the other one with a rescue he was already 10 when we got him and he lived with us for three years I am crying right now his name was Thorn and he was beautiful dragon I miss him every day and I was crying yesterday because I missed him.
My little guy really liked Blueberries and Bok Choy (Might be spelling that wrong.) He ate them almost right away when I got him. (I think we was about 6 weeks old) He didn't eat them the first 2 or 3 days if I am remembering right. But after that he started eating them.

Has been in 2 different size tanks and ready to move into much bigger one just have to finish the air vents seal the wood and put on doors. Thank you for all you do for the reptile world. 😃💖 GOD BLESS P.s. Think I will do the tile. What did you put between the tile?
That's fantastic! 🥰 In smaller tanks I usually don't put anything, so I can just pull the tiles out and clean them. But since Zsasz's tank is much bigger, I used grout. 😊
How about setting up with half tile and half carpet? Paper towel in potty area? Hadn’t thought about parasites in carpet. I do like have live plants= succulent, cactus or air plants in the tank, we are trying a bio active crested terrarium.
Hi! I was never interested in reptiles until I literally found one on the side of the road yesterday near an elementary school. He is full grown so I have no idea how old he is. I took it to Petsmart and got all of the things. I am a little concerned about lighting so im going to go watch your video on lighting. Right now he has a uvb and basking light but it doesn’t stretch the full length of his 40 gallon tank.
i’ve read a lot about diluted white vinegar as a cleaner, 1 part vinegar and 2 parts warm water, is this safe as well? new beardie mama on dec 9th 😇😇 doing all the extra research just to double check the week before and wanted to know! ur videos are so helpful 🤍🤍
I love your videos. I have raised many different types of lizards. I have raised green Iguanas, anoles, collard lizard, Sudan plated lizard, and a few other kinds. So I decided to try my hand at beardie dragons. I bought a baby a few days ago. I have it in a 40 gallon tank with heat and uvb/a. I live in a colder climate so I am using a space heater to raise the temps for night until the ceramic bulbs come. So I have a question. My baby beardie is eating 10-15 little crickets a day. I am doing feedings three times a day. It is also pooping a lot. Is this good enough? I have noticed the last few days I have had it, it is eating more and more. It actually ate watercress and dandelion greens on its own. I also hand feed it bugs. I want to help the lizard to learn to trust me. Thanks for all your research. I also ordered Dubai roaches from Dubai dude and I used Elle is the checkout code.
Careful with calcium with d3 with those arcadia bulbs. They supply enough d3 you shouldnt need it anymore. Tossed out my tortoises' cal w/d3 years ago when i made the switch
My parents bought calcium sand even tho I told them not to. They got Bc the worker said that calcium sand is good for the bearded dragon and they trusted her over me. But luckily was had left over tile from awhile back. So I put tile over the sand. It covered most the sand but there was a little of sand that stuck out so I used sticks, rocks, etc to cover that but if sand as best I could
Tile isn’t a good substrate, it’s bad for their joints and doesn’t provide the burrowing enrichment they need to thrive. A soil/playsand/clay mix is best.
@@nightinggale6470 I know, I heard about that, but I’m just trying to make the little but of resources I have work. It’s better then just leaving calcium sand though. I do want to get play sand eventually tho
@@SimplyGhosted when you’re able to switch to a good loose substrate, I don’t recommend using playsand on its own. It doesn’t hold their burrows and can be hard on their joints (since it’s very loose on its own). A soil/playsand/clay mix would be ideal
You have helped me so much now I know things that I would’ve never new and would possibly be a problem I’m getting a beardie soon is there anything else I should know before getting one?
What part of Alabama are you from? I recognized your accent and then saw that you are indeed from here. We live in Ashville AL, but raised in Greater Birmingham and Fairhope/Point Clear. Wanted to take my daughter to the upcoming reptile show so I figured id show her some videos on the different types of reptiles which might be there.
You put a salad bowl down first, then leave it for them to pick and or glare at throughout the day, and remove it when meal times are over. Same protocol for adults, so in the morning put a salad out, leave it, and late afternoon remove it. Dust all the bugs for baby dragons. They're gonna need the calcium for bone growth. Once they get older you can space out how often you dust depending on age/size.
Hey there! Just a couple questions. Im planning on getting a baby beardie soon. However, I work full time and will only be able to feed it in the early morning and then when I get home (8hours later) if thats okay? Or should I get an older beardie?
Thank you so much for this video! I will be getting one for my autistic son for his birthday in 5 weeks I’m so excited! Can you please tell me where I can find the tile substrate
That's awesome! 😊 You can get it at any hardware store. And usually if you find their clearance section, they have them for less than $1 each You will also usually either need the hardware store to cut the tile (so make sure to get the measurements) or you'll have to cut it.
Just letting you know: tile isn’t a good substrate, at least not for the whole substrate. Burrowing enrichment is extremely important for beardies, so a deep layer of a suitable loose substrate (a soil/sand/clay mix) is best for them. 100% tile could also be hard on their joints. You could perhaps do half tile, half loose.
Can i use chlorahexadine to clean the beardie? Its what i use for my snake emclosures didnt know if i could use it for a bearded dragons enclosure or not
Hello! I recently got a baby beardie (about two weeks ago) and i have three crickets in his tank. He never eats them and rarely eats his dry foods when we got some. We have been trying to help but he doesn't wanna snack
Never leave the bugs in the tank for more than a half hour or so. Do not allow them to roam around the cage. Keep them in a dish that they cannot crawl out of.
In your video you said the you have to feed you baby bearded dragon in 10-15 min increments and I was wondering if for all those increments do you use calcium? Love your videos

You should try sand paper my class pet was a geared dragon and she loved it ☺
That’s not a suitable substrate. A deep layer of a soil/sand/clay mix is best, burrowing enrichment is extremely beneficial for beardies!
I’ll make corrections soon as possible. Thank you
Careful with calcium with d3 with those arcadia bulbs. They supply enough d3 you shouldnt need it anymore. Tossed out my tortoises' cal w/d3 years ago when i made the switch
Thanks for this video and the links to others
You're welcome! 😊
Elle's Reptiles, bearded dragons are popular, but can you do another video on your opinions on owning venomous, poisonous reptiles and amphibians?
If you are feeding 3 times a day, do you offer salad all 3 times? Or just the first time? Do you dust the bugs each time or just once a day? Thanks 😊
You probably just want to feed. The bugs The The first week But if you have to leave maybe leave a tiny salad for them to eat a snack
You can get it at any hardware store. And usually if you find their clearance section, they have them for less than $1 each
You will also usually either need the hardware store to cut the tile (so make sure to get the measurements) or you'll have to cut it.
@@ellesreptiles Thank you so much❤️ do you have a video on insurance on reptiles
New viewer. Great content! You from the South?
Can i use chlorahexadine to clean the beardie? Its what i use for my snake emclosures didnt know if i could use it for a bearded dragons enclosure or not
I love your channel
Thank you so much 🥹💜
You encouraged me to make one about my bearded dragon and helped me a lot with my journey! My channel name is wafflecare777
And I recommend your channel all the time!!!!
Great and thorough video!
Thank you! 😊
Super helpful video!
Hi I just got a baby bearded dragon and I know you said you dont like carpet but I want to know what you think about sand mats
Where do you get those cool backgrounds for your terrariums?
Thanks for good info! 💚💚💚
Loved this video!!! Thank you!!!
I have a question would it be ok to give your beardie electrolyte baths per week or is it used only for dehydrated dragons.
In your video you said the you have to feed you baby bearded dragon in 10-15 min increments and I was wondering if for all those increments do you use calcium? Love your videos
