Is Darth Vader More Powerful Than Anakin Skywalker? (In-Depth Analysis) - Star Wars Explained

- In Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one, or so the prophecy lead the Jedi to believe…and we know that Darth Vader was half man half machine after his duel on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith to Obi-Wan Kenobi…severing his connection to the force severely with his lost limbs and burned body. Once Palpatine revived him and put him into the machined body that we know Darth Vader came to be in...just who was more powerful? Now it's hard to say, as Anakin Skywalker never got to see his full potential, however we can examine Vader's peak performance next to Anakin's just before Obi-Wan Kenobi destroyed him. We'll examine lightsaber fighting styles (Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan and Count Dooku), force powers, and everything in between in this episode of Star Wars Theory.

@@JBD915 Vader was more *skilled* with the force. He compensated as best he could for being effectively crippled by learning to fully harness what little power he still had. His actual connection to the force was much stronger prior to his conversion.

Exactly. The actor was horrid in that role besides that last lightsaber battle. Three movies and I never bought his and padmes relationship. No chemistry or well written scenes showing a love that could taint him like it did. George is a shit writer but great at shooting compelling scenes as having big ideas. the movies contain some great shot scenes but as a script none of the prequels work. It makes the Jedi look like fucking morons also.

Short answer: Vader was stronger than Anakin ever was, but not nearly as strong as he COULD HAVE been. Anakin had incredible potential but he never got there. As Vader he got much more skilled in the force, much more ruthless and his hatred fueled the dark side in him and made him immensely powerful.
hylianchriss Wrong. Anakin had ALREADY reached about 90% of his true potential by ROTS. He was the most powerful force sensitive ever by then. He was already 120-130% the strength of Yoda and Sidious and would have been TWICE as strong as them had he grew into that last 10% of his pontential....and so after his Mustafar injuries he lost about 40% of his power level, and he was STILL 80-90% their strength... Anakin could control LITERAL Force Gods, and THAT happened even a year and a half almost 2 years BEFORE ROTS. Where he had grown even more powerful by then. Anakin was stronger than Vader could ever be. He had already reached about 90% of his true potential like I said.... I mean he LOST 40% of his power level after Mustafar THAT right there says it all.... and he was STILL the most dominant force in the universe for the next 25 years.... The completely jacked Anakin Skywalker from ROTS would wreck his suited-self.

Anakin's short comings were not about his ability. It was his arrogance. A more mature Anakin could take down vader.
But would age make Anakin behave in a more mature way? He behaves more calmly and rationally as an 8 year old than he did as a teen or adult.
Some people just don't get that mature. You see them sometimes on crime programs; drunk, vomiting into the gutter outside a club and punching strangers who looked at them funny.
Anakin is the Jedi version of that.
It took having 3 limbs cut off and being left to die as a triple amputee in an active volcano to, ironically, calm him down a little. To make him pause and think about things instead of just reacting emotionally.
I don't know if age would have ever allowed Anakin to overcome Vader. It took going through what he did to make Anakin become more powerful.
Anakin would have continued to outclass almost everyone as he got older, and there's nothing we've seen about him that suggests that wouldn't have kept going to his head.
In fact it probably would have gotten worse, and he'd have grown into a Jedi with the personality of a pro wrestler, constantly boasting about how he's the baddest SOB to ever live.

According to a quote by Lucas in a magazine interview about the then recently-released Episode 3, I recall him saying that "Darth Vader would be the most powerful Sith to ever live, were it not for his injuries. Thanks to them, he is about 80% of the strength of the Emperor, and the Emperor will replace him with a better apprentice if he is able." It's a paraphrase, but again I read it some 12 or so years ago.

Here's something to note: Vader's prosthetic legs made him taller. As Anakin he was 1.88 meters and Vader 2.03 meters. With his injuries Anakin had difficulty lifting over his head but his prosthetics gave him extra height to give him reach.
Vader is stronger because hes older and more experienced. You don't need a full body to be connected to the force.

I've always been of the opinion that even after Mustafar, Vader could at the very least have given Sidious a serious run for his money. While severely hindered if he would play his cards right he could win, and Sidious knew this so he made Vader's suit and cybernetics extremely sensitive to force lightning.
Darth Vader was one of the greatest duelist ever, patient, powerful, skillful, using the power of the dark side effectively during the fight and creating his own unique lightsaber dueling style that allowed him to use his enhanced strenght in the suit and minimized the problems caused by it - mostly the lack of agility.
Anakin on the other hand, was impulsive, fast duelist, using mostly his enhanced jumps to destroy his enemies. He had enormous potential, but he was too young to achieve it during the clone wars. In direct 1v1 he'd stand no chance. Vader was more powerful in the Force, more patient ad tactical and had 20 years of experience in killing the Jedi who survived Order 66. He would easily humiliate Anakin.
.........Vader and Obi Wan were the only light saber users -_______- . Vader couldnt even beat Luke. Someone who hasnt been in a plethora of light saber battles only to fight storm troopers. Case and point, Vader in the last fight with Luke starts swinging eradically. But against Obi Wan when he was Anakin, a Soresu MAS-no THE SORESU master, they were going pretty much blow for blow until he lost the height advantage in ground. You cant make those recklessly swings in battle against a Soresu master unless you wanted to easily be countered. And neither were able to cut each other before the final clash. He was impulsive but Vader was full of himself, a mere instrument of the darkside of the force.

Well, Return of the Jedi novels point to Vader being at his most powerful ever making even the emperor fear him. I think Vader eventually surpassed Anakin in terms of raw power alone.
I feel sand because if Vader was stuck on Tatooine and he was in a sand storm the sand would impair his vision more and it could get stuck in his cybernetic arms. And anakin doesn’t like sand.

Aniken was more nimble ....also aniken was nerfed when he became Vader. That’s y palpatine gave him the bulky suit to hender him from becoming the student that kills the sixth master. Remember their convo in ep 3. The student was to kill its master but Vader couldn’t do it bc palpatine purposelessly nerfed him.... he could have gave him proper prosthetics but he didn’t

If you listen closely in Empire Strikes back when Vader is battling Luke on Cloud City it's evident Vader becomes quite short of breath when actually battling Jedi other than normal troopers. Something Anakin didn't have.

Vader's suit breathes harder as necessary. He doesn't have a breathing problem, per-se. His cybernetics replace his damaged biological parts, creating a functioning system. He's immune to poison gas, and his armor deflects lightsaber strikes. Plus, with less biology in the mix, he doesn't need as much oxygen as a non-cyborg. Armored Vader would crush pre-suit Anakin, and could probably best Palpatine about half the time. We know he did in the end.
@@AgentM79 Yeah but any trained Jedi can resist poison gas and enhance their physical abilities using the force. You can even use your agility and speed as a replacement for defensive armour if you are fast enough. You know Yoda and Obi-Wan sure do. They seem untouchable in a lightsaber duel and when blasters are fired at them as if they're wearing armoured suits themselves!

They seem to alter Vader's abilities as demanded by the plot of the story. He's a flat-out TANK in "Lords of the Sith", for example. We also saw Jedi batting away blaster fire with ightsabers in the prequel trilogy, Clone Wars, and Rebels. Vader deflected them with his hand in Empire Strikes Back, yet used both his lightsaber AND force powers to do the same in Rogue One. As a fan, I don't like the hobbling of Vader that has taken place since George Lucas declared he was only 80% of the Emperor, down from a pre-suit "potential" of 200%. We knew NOTHING of this back in the 1980s. In 1999, we wondered who would win - Maul vs. Vader? Heck - we barely knew what a Jedi or Sith could do in the Original trilogy. SITH wasn't even mentioned once in those movies. All we knew I'm 1977 was that Vader was "more machine than man". Well, science fiction at that time had a bionic man and a bionic woman. Those cyborgs didn't need The Force to perform extraordinary feats. So, to us, "Darth" would be BETTER than he was before he became part machine (remember, we didn't know WHY. We were told he killed Luke's father - a Jedi!) . So, Cyborg Vader should be better, stronger, faster. I'll take Rogue One Vader, exterminating rebel scum, as my version. I'll also take Rebels Vader, in the McQuarrie-styled armor. Drop an imperial walker on him? NOT.
Regardless of Vader losing his limbs, Vader was not just as gifted and experienced, but he gained a physical advantage that would complement his overall aggressive nature. Imagine the blows of a man whose limbs are just robotic extensions powered by the the dark side of the force. Only duelists on par with Obi-Wan could hope to contend with that force and even the great defensive master met his match and surrendered to Vader's onslaught. Sure Luke got to dance here and there, but we know Vader toyed with him in Empire Strikes Back and was conflicted during Return of the Jedi.
The fact that Vader can bench press an ocean (thanks, Fallen Order!) is definitely a significant point in his favor.

Great video!! I just wanted to add that throughout the Clone Wars and most of his life Anakin Skywalker was often conflicted in the force and though he possessed extreme natural ability with the force, he was clouded in his judgment and he lacked the focus that Vader possessed.

Darth Vader has more power. His suit keeps sand off his skin. This makes him happy, and much more confident in sandy areas.
But his suit is meant to cause discomfort. Palpatine FILLED it with sand.
I like to think that Vader started out having just 80% of the Palpatine's Force potential at the end of Revenge of the Sith, but by Return of the Jedi he was virtually on par with Palpatine and it was only his vulnerability to Force lightning and Palpatine's knowledge of all his suit's weaknesses kept Vader from being able to overthrow him by himself

Speaking seriously even though I know this is a late post I think that while Darth Vader was stronger than Anakin of that time as Anakin Skywalker he had the potential to grow even more powerful than Vader what I'm saying is if he had not become lost to his arrogance undefeated Obi-Wan he would grown more powerful than Vader ever was in the comics and movies making him nearly Unstoppable unlike Darth Vader while appeared menacing and Unstoppable add multiple glaring weaknesses and in abilities even though he grew more talented and adapted to his weaknesses and made new Strength he has a limit that he inevitably reaches where as if he had remained whole for the most part as Anakin Skywalker his potential would have been limitless.

Also his prosthetics were outdated he has gotten them overhauled at some points in Canon but it was pointed out that despite the advanced technology that the Empire had at the time these Prosthetics were over cumbersome and added further to the difficulty of moving around. I'm not sure what other the weaknesses there are pretty much his main weakness is being half mechanical in general and relying heavily on life support systems which have a limit and will break if push too far his, but Consciousness has no limits and he can grow stronger through that but not in body and even if he gains more power through the force he'll be placing too much strain on his prosthesis and life support systems which will ultimately cause them to fail giving him glaring limits whereas if he still had his organic body he has a stronger connection to the force and would be able to grow in both body and spirit. The venue would determine the outcome. If Anakin was allowed to use his superior mobility, he could gain the upper hand just by out-maneuvering Vader, but if the battle would take place in a confined space, Vader would have the edge with his well-rounded fighting style making him nearly invincible.
When it comes to Force powers, both would be strong, and perhaps even equals, since Vader would be drawing upon all of his hatred, anger, pain, and loss to fuel his powers, which Anakin would have the hypothetical advantage of being able to utilize his full connection to the Force. I think the difference in motivation would either nearly or completely equal out here.
Even if you were to bring Sand into the equation, it's difficult to think of which person would be more inconvenienced by it--Anakin would have to feel it on his skin, all over the place, coarse and irritating it would serve to break his concentration; Vader, meanwhile, would have to worry about the horrid substance interfering with his delicate machinery and slowing him down even more.
I'd like to propose an alternate scenario where both would be fighting at the peak of their power.
For Vader, that would be maybe a few years after he turned to the Dark Side--after he had enough time to fully adapt to his new conditions, both physical and Force related.
For Anakin, that would be in an alternate time line where he never lost Padme, never got corrupted by Palpatine, never became Vader, and never lost his limbs to Obi-Wan, with probably the same span of time passing from that point where he would have turned to the Dark Side, but instead stayed a Jedi. This version of Anakin would probably have received additional tutelage from Mace Windu (since Windu would be alive in this time line) after Anakin helped him uncover Palpatine's true nature and assisted in taking him down, proving his loyalty and trustworthiness. It's feasible that after that, the Council would vote to promote this Jedi Hero to the rank of Master as, through his actions and through training under some of the greatest Jedi known, he would have proven his worth.
So in this hypothetical time line clash where Lord Vader at his strongest would fight a Jedi Master Anakin Skywalker--who would likely be the most powerful Jedi to ever exist in every aspect--I would say even the OP and Plot-Armored Vader would get thrashed like the Younglings he murdered.

I'd say no because you could tell in certain parts of the Star Wars era, you could see how strong Anakin was when both his Light and Dark connected, he waa someone he couldn't be beaten easily. The same can be said for Vader who solely fueled on the Dark but was still beaten by more experienced Jedi. There's not that many experienced Sith in the first place that could outmaster Anakin like the Jedi did Vader. Vader's rage made him unstoppable but easy to defeat if set off track, Anakin's rage combined with the Light could set him off track but it was harder seeing how he went more all out as a Jedi than as a Sith. Not to mention the fact, Vader had a metallic suit and was slowed down, Anakin was a full human with very few limitations. I'd give this round to Anakin.

Darth Vader is a lot more powerful in the Force. His telekinetic abilities are the greatest in all of Star Wars. He didn't need to push himself at all when moving heavy objects, like the other characters. He also could force choke someone on another ship. It wasn't just strong but very precise-- like disarming people instead of ending up pulling the person shooting. His strikes were also a lot more overwhelming than Anakin's. My money goes to Vader being stronger but Anakin had the potential to become stronger.

Although Anakin's potential was more than Vader's, Vader became the MOST power force user ever. End of Story. Vader completely crippled, completely burnt, completely destroyed, also with no functioning life support(disabled by Palpatine), whilst receiving constant DEADLY lighting blasts from Palpatine, etc. Vader completely out willed and out forced Palpatine, killing Palpatine. In fact Vader could have killed Palpatine whenever he wanted, it just that Vader, like Anakin was mentally limited(abused) by the people who surrounded him(first Watto, then the Jedi, then Palptine). I think there is a video in this channel about it or in a similar one. It is explained that they were both very cautious in that fight, because they have not seen each other in years and were afraid about what the other could have learned, and also we have to take into account that in their previous fight, Obi Wan destroyed him, so it makes sense that he was scared.

George Lucas himself said Vader was weaker than he was and Anakin before his limbs were cut. He said that in the OT both Obi-Wan and Vader were past their prime.
Vader's strengthened connection to the force and greater experience helped him make up for his reduce power in skill, but he still wasn't as powerful. I think Obi-Wan Kenobi series supports this as well.
Anakin basically was at a stalemate with Obi-Wan and only lost due to his arrogance. In the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, in their final duel, Obi-Wan completely overpowered Vader with the force. And Obi-Wan in that series was not likely superior to how powerful he was in ROTS given he had severed his connection to the force for a decade and only recently had his "strength return" as Darth Vader mentioned. At best he was probably equal to how powerful he was in ROTS.
In terms of potential not power. Empire Palpatine said Anakin would be 2-3 times more powerful than him and Yoda but Anakin never reached this potential. Just by Anakin can’t reach that crazy potential doesn’t mean he can’t surpass a Younger version of himself.
If Anakin had been taught my Mace Windu(the cocreator of Vapaad) to utilize then master his feelings, anger, aggression and love then perhaps he wouldn’t have been as susceptible to succumbing to the dark side. He would have controlled it instead, naturally enjoying the battles he partook in and the victories achieved. Thus giving him many of the advantages of Vader’s use of Form 7.

Anakin for raw power, but lack of control. Vader for pure skill, ruthlessness, and lack of empathy but without the level of force attunement that Anakin had.
Overall Vader, he had more of everything that Anakin had (bar the unpredictable uncontrolled emotionally unstable force abilities he had) amped up with his relentless personality and tears of experience.

I say Anakin wins. As Pre-suit Vader, he defeated a Jedi battlemaster(who is a master of ALL 7 FORMS of lightsaber combat.) Pre-suit Vader did this using all he knew as Anakin Skywalker, since he hadn't received any Sith training yet. I think this at least proves that Anakin can defend against all 7 lightsaber forms at an exceptional level. This in my opinion makes Anakin and Vader equals at lightsaber duelests. The fact that Anakin has contended with Dooku in the clone wars and even DEFEATED him, when the Jedi order thought only Windu or Yoda could do that, should speak highly of Anakin as a warrior. Lastly, besides youth and agility, Anakin has one more advantage. Anakin already is SO powerful with just the light side, then he can call upon even MORE power by using the Dark side. I think Anakin's power(using light side and dark) gives him an exceptional advantage over Vader who only uses the dark side. But this is just my opinion.

I doubt that Anakin would win, as Vader is supposed to be a more powerful version of him. You probably know that Vader knows all 7 forms of light saber combat, as well as extensive knowledge in the Darkside of the force. Anakin's raw force abilities are a step above Vader's, but Vader has more info on both ways of the force, and has more experience with it. Though Anakin is stated to be one of the best and very proficient with Dem so, Vader knows how to perfectly combat it as he is a master of it himself, and can also block it with the more definitive forms of dueling like surresou, and counter Anakin's style with makashi. Anakin and Vader's aggression is mostly on par, they both angle each blow to kill, so the fight would he quick, impressive, and the defeat would be a fast Stab or chop.

Anakin is naturally stronger, but Vader's sheer rage could possibly push his dark side powers to be on par or above Anakin's capabilities. Vader also has a lot more experience, though, he is also limited in his capabilities. Anakin already was a master of the techniques, Vader just had to adjust and basically create his own, due to his bodies limitations. The question is, could Anakin adapt to Vader's form in time to counter and potentially win, or would Vader's unique form and in-depth knowledge of Anakin's fighting form allow him to end the fight before that happens. If Anakin can last long enough to adapt to Vader's form, it'd probably be pretty comparable, but Anakin would still probably lose due to his emotional instability and internal conflict.

hope you respond to this..but i read somewhere on wookiepedia that vaders limitations werent merely physical but psychological it was said that vader couldnt accept what had happen to him he couldnt accept what he had become he was in a constant state of turmoil it was theorized that if vader embraced what he was he could have reached his true potential despite his condition in my oppinion if anakin/vader had so much potential with th force i believe he could have found a way to overcome his injuries

I honestly believe that after an initial exchange where Anakin had to make adjustments, he would have had adapted and over powered Vader. Anakin was a quick study and very adaptable. This is how he was able to survive AS Vader. The biggest advantage Vader would have had would be experience and he was clever and manipulative. Hands down a dark side Anakin with even a few months to train uninterrupted would likely smoke both of them. The only one to beat darkside Ani would be a properly trained jedi Anakin as if qui gonn or mace were his master. That would have been something to see.
So after playing Jedi Fallen Order, I had a thought for a game. Played in the style of JFO, but you control Anakin just as he turns to the dark side as Vader, then continues through Vader's conquest of planets, hunting of Jedi that survived Order 66, and inspiring terror throughout the galaxy.
Well Vader was stronger than anakin because of his experience of 20 years but if anakin had experience of 20 years he would have defeated both Yoda and palpatine at once or he would have been 20% more powerful than Yoda and palpatine

I know this is an old video, but could you do one when both Anakin and Vader are at their peak? Anakin right before his turn (beginning of ROTS) vs Vader (Mustifar before the fight with Kenobi)? In other words, both with healthy bodies and focused minds
Now of course, the specific scenario described here does put Vader in the most possible victories but I’d love to point out that Vader is more or less the most potential that Anakin could get in the dark side once his limbs were cut off.
So let’s say he doesn’t get his limbs cut off. This means you have an Anakin with all the midichlorians he already had at his disposal, and then hypothesize two scenarios where Anakin kills Obi Wan and continues down the path of the dark side, or Obi Wan manages to reason with Anakin, turning him back to the light. Now fast forward these 2 Anakins until they’re the age of Vader. Now who would win? Vader vs both of these versions of Anakin respectively. I’d now say that Vader is at a disadvantage against both. Would he lose? I don’t know for sure

I like to think of this the same way that I do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Raw physical strength definite benefit and can compensate for lack of skill. However, someone with a black belt will easily beat someone twice their size if they have no martial arts training. Your potential is a theoretical measure of your upper limit, but it is completely negated as long as you don’t know how to use it.
Anakin’s biggest weakness is that he was strong enough that he could get by without having to adapt and become more disciplined, which would have allowed him to fully harness his innate power. Darth Vader on the other hand had to do exactly that to compensate for what he had lost.
It was said in cannon so many times that Vader triples all light saber and force ability
