In this video:
The Filet-O-Fish is one of the more curious items on the McDonald’s menu in that it receives virtually no advertising whatsoever, yet still continues to be sold by the chain despite the fact that it seems like nobody ever orders one and it’s been a problem item for years for the company due to difficulty in finding a sustainable, tasty source of fish meat at the volume the behemoth needs, as well as the fact that it requires a separate fryer to cook in than their other items. As it turns out, they keep it around because the Filet-O-Fish is actually intended to be eaten by a very specific kind of customer- people who abstain from eating non-seafood meat for religious reasons.

I actually love the Filet o Fish. I get so sick of burgers and of the onslaught of chicken sandwiches lately. I’m glad they have kept it all this time.
Me too, its actually my favorit item McDonalds has to offer.
I worked at McD's and that was my go-to for breaks. I always made sure mine was fresh cooked, and used most of the tartar sauce for my fries. There's a seasoning they use in the chicken sandwiches that doesn't agree with me, so I skip those.
Totally agree! Felet - O - Fish is amazing with extra sauce and extra cheese 😋

The Filet-O-Fish is the only reason I will ever stop at McDonalds. When I worked there as a kid in the early 1970s they introduced a double Filet-O-Fish called the "Grand Mariner". Sadly, that trial sandwich didn't last. A few years later I was living in Germany when the first McDonalds opened in Munich. The Filet was offered there as the "Fisch Mac". You could order it with a beer!
double filets still exist just ask!
You can get doubles today if you request it. Some times it's actually directly advertised that way.
The Double Filet is available in Shanghai - its awful. Burger King has also started selling Fish Burgers in Shanghai, they're even worse. In Hamburg, I don't think the Filet o' Fish was very popular as the people of Hamburg prefer their traditional, crunchy bread roll, Fischbrötchen: funny locals, these fish sandwiches are usually always served cold.
I've always wanted to order a "fish mac", a double fish patty made as a big mac with tartar sauce instead of mac sauce. I doubt any store would be able to figure out how to bill for it is all.
@@Oldbmwr100rs Sounds good! When I worked there we had to pay for any food we ate at a small discount - I think 20%. To save money (I was paid $1.75 per hour!) We made up our own discount sandwich designs. My favorite was a grilled cheese sandwich (made on an inside-out burger bun) with tartar sauce. I recollect it was 15 cents...
The filet-o-fish is highly underrated!
Wait... People don't like the Filet-o-Fish? I love the Filet-o-Fish
Zikai Hui same
I absolutely hate it but then again all seafood makes me throw up. Half the time I can't even deal with the smell of seafood without my stomach turning. I also can't stand the smell of seawater either. I've tried a variety of seafood and can say that I've liked only one thing, fresh caught mako.
Ikr? I guess it's not popular in western countries :/
I only like shrimp. It's the only type of seafood i would eat.
This westerner loves em'.
I used to work at McDonald’s, and we sold a lot of filet o fishes.
How about Big Mac? Rarely see ppl order them tbh.
Me too, maybe it was the populations that we served.
You sold to many insane people
@@Freikorptrasher i think its region oriented, i used to work at Mcdonalds as well. BigMacs were sold through the fucking roof and back,
fillet-o-fish on the other hand, we'll sell more then people thing especially on Sundays. But were talking 20-30 fillet-0-fish on a good day, ass opposed to like 150-300 bigmacs on a decent day. Hell sometimes its 300 bigmacs just supper and latenight lol
Then you should know that the proper plural expression is "filets-o-fish." I am not making this up.
Actually, my family and I actually buy the fillet o fish simply because we like them. I actually was surprised to hear it was really unpopular for the first time in this video.
It's not unpopular at all. I don't know where this idiot got that bit of information but it's wrong. Maybe it's unpopular in whatever shithole country he lives in, but here in the USA it is it is a huge seller and also McDonalds has no problem getting the fish it needs in the quantities it needs. Not sure where this doof got his info but it's grossly inaccurate.
I love the Fillet O' Fishdude. My dad and my chick love it too. What's good about this sandwich is that since it's not ordered very often, they don't keep premade/heated patties on deck like regular beef patties, so when you get a FoF, you're getting a fresh one. Downside is, they only give you half a square of cheese.
Minus cheese , for me , but dead on point otherwise 👌
Its true I worked at a McDonalds as a teenager and they make you break the slice of cheese in half for the filet o fish. Its kind of strange why they decided to do that.
For the McDonald's near me it's the opposite lol the fish is never fresh unless you ask for it fresh

As a pescatarian, McDonald's doesn't have a menu friendly to my diet, but our group wanted McDonalds and I was sure there was nothing I could eat until someone suggested this, which I never knew existed. Fillet-o-fish is one of the best things on their menu only issue is its kinda pricey
They should rebrand it like how crab sticks became seafood sticks so they can use more general fish rather than being stuck using the more known ones which have shrinking stocks. It's a shame fish farming doesn't work with the majority of fish due to migration patterns.
@@Ushio01 I doubt if the pollock stocks are going to be threatened anytime soon. Plus, you can't get more generic than Filet-O-Fish. BTW, pollock is also what crab sticks are made of.

Misspelling it with 2 Ls is probably why people mispronounce out. Filet is pronounced fi-LAY.
The triple cheeseburger with 4 pumps of mac and slivered onions is way better and hasn't given me the runs so i recommend that
I love the Filet-O-Fish! I always ask them to add lettuce... perfect! And yes, I'm a good old Catholic girl, so I've consumed quite a few of them on Fridays during Lent, especially when I worked there for a few years way back when.
I actually work at a store in the Groen franchise. His grandson, Grant, is our store owner. It's always been kind of weird they bring up the whole, "first new item on the menu" thing. But I guess it's a staple of the national culture and all that jazz.

when I was working at McDonald's I'd get at least 20 orders for fillet of fish a shift... and during Lent on Fridays out was literally the most popular menu item so we'd have to dedicate half the fryers to it.
Skyler Garza When Filet O Fish is on sale , like two for one price , they sell at least 20 every half hour during the lunch or dinner rush.
Yeah I remember that too
Skyler Garza In my area we have fish sandwiches in the 2 for 5 menu. When the Muslims and Indians come in, its a field day. We can't keep them, cooking 8 patties at a time!

Great video! I really enjoyed this dig back into such a niche area of history - the creation of a sandwich that really doesn’t seem particularly historically significant by most standards). But these are good little sandwiches that I’ve always really enjoyed. The steamed bread, the cheese, the tartar sauce… it all works together. And yes, as a Catholic, I’ve been a big part of helping those Lent sales! As a matter of fact, probably 75% of these that I’ve eaten over the years have been during Lent.

The fillet o fish is the only thing I eat from McDonalds. The only problem is that the fish is never centered in the middle, it's always slanted and almost out of the bread entirely. Only once in my life has it been perfect but compared to the rest of the food at McDonalds, I much prefer this.
Yeah, I work at McDonald's, and we hardly ever have the time to center ingredients in the sandwiches. Sorry though!
Da' Rito not true. Even when it's super busy, it can still be done right.
+Robert T Yeah, it can, but honestly most of us aren't that dedicated. We're just trying to shorten the huge list of sandwiches on the screen during a lunch or dinner rush. Actually, the off-center problem might be because of how we're trained to finish the sandwich by closing the box upside-down so the bottom falls onto the top.
PakoTCB its cos they rush it too much its well funny to see how the sandwhich turns out

Something that I noticed when I was young and working at a McDonald's was that the fillet o fish also sells more when it rains. My manager had told me about it but I didn't take her seriously but then I started paying attention and she was right. Whenever it rained the fish was definitely ordered more than when it was sunny. I don't pretend to know why this happens but it certainly does.
this is a very interesting phenomenon. I think it also somewhat relates to people preferring to eat salad in the summer when it's warm.

As a person that worked at McDonald’s almost 10 years we definitely sell a whole shit ton of filet all day every day 😂😂 but this was very informative and interesting 🤔🤔
This was the first job I had in high school. At that time (1974) they were made with half a slice of cheese. The best thing about the sandwich, in my opinion, is the tartar sauce. It’s great on fries.
Now I want a Filet-O-Fish.

@ArmchairWarrior You sound offended . . .??
I work at McDonald's, and the fish are the second most likely item to be served to you super old. First is spicy mcchicken. My recommendation is to order both of these cook to order if you want them, they take 3:30 in the fryer so it doesn't add too much time and will taste a thousand times better trust. Especially the spicy, that will literally sit for 2 hours and never gets thrown out.
Bro they don't sell the spicy McChicken where I live anymore 😢 That was my favorite menu item
One of the best menu items honestly
I actually like the Filet-o-Fish. I eat them whenever I feel like it, which is frequently.
so...possibly Catholic then?
@@TheWolfsnack yes, but that's not the point. I just....like them.
i don't understand why it is believed it is a problem item. people eat it all the time. If it were a problem item it wouldn't be in the menu for sure. Be more realistic.
He explained why it's a problem item. 1. Outside of Lent its a relatively poor seller. 2. Obtaining sufficient supplies of sufficiently cheap and sustainable fish is difficult, compared to procuring the beef supply for the burgers. 3. Cooking them requires it's own separate fryer, which adds cost and logistical inefficiency to every McDonald's kitchen.
HuginMunin If they weren't making a profit they'd discontinue it, no? Why else would it be an item on the menu?
They continue to sell it because it adds flexibility to the menu and a subset of customers complain when the menu changes. They actually did try to discontinue it at one point. But it's _less_ profitable than other items. The Filet-O-Fish is an opportunity cost problem for McDonalds, and an administrative headache because of the hassle of managing the fish supply. It's a problem item because McDonald's would prefer to sell an item instead that sold more and required less effort on their part to produce.
HuginMunin Hmm I'll think about that. Thanks for your response.
It's neither a religious nor dietary restriction for me, but grew up in a fairly Catholic area, and got a taste for Friday fish fries in the spring. I'm not a huge fan of McDonald's hamburgers, so if it wasn't for the filet-o-fish, I would probably never go there again- I eat them year-round, once a week or so, because I absolutely adore their particular recipe for tarter sauce. In this area, it's over 3x the price of a regular cheeseburger, but I don't care, just as long as it remains available.
Obviously, I've had vastly better fish elsewhere, but I'm in the middle of the US, so seafood is very expensive compared to beef, pork or chicken.

Sand Wich to many filet o fish....
my 6 year old has the same one.
Sand Wich Well spotted!
It's probably because he's wearing a full-thickness t-shirt underneath. If he wore a proper undershirt, it would fit.
But still looks sharp.
dont be dense, he's obviously been eating too many FOF's
I order this in addition to my double quarter pounder. Regularly. Get fucked.
your health is gonna get fucked
Jones HC so is his wallet
These videos are always so interesting! I actually like a fillet o fish every now and then as a break from all the other burgers etc. I just ask for 2 patties
My grandma loves these. And no advertising? Are you kidding ? "Give me that filet of fish give that fish AHHH" lol
You're asking too much of that second button.
🤣🤣🤣
Made me look 🤣🤣🤣
(Yo I hear this guy is _shredded._ )
@@zachanikwano he’s not 😂
this dude looks like a dollar store vsauce
suciolocopopono lmfao
suciolocopopono budget UK Vsauce confirmed
suciolocopopono does look like vsause but is just as good
Oh man, I fucking died laughing!!!!
true
When i was a kid they were 25 cents.
I still love them.
"to the delight of the 1 person we all know who actually eats these things."
Still just me?
Nah, about two thirts of the comments agree.
No one ever buys it? It was quite pretty popular when I worked at McDonald's.
Haven't tried it yet. I'm getting it next time I go. What's your opinion on it? I mean, if you ever ate it.
Eren Jaeger If you like fish and tartar sauce then you should try it. The buns have a very soft and fluffy texture. I think Filet-O-Fish is the first item from McDonald that I've tried when I was a kid and I love it ever since. That, and because I like to eat fish. This sandwich is actually quite popular in my country.
I don't like fish, but at everything else I've got the same story with it.
Brandon Raich I worked at mcds for years and no one ever bought it
Nora Farron the buns are the same buns as the cheeseburger buns, they're just steamed rather than toasted which is how they're soft like that.
I don't just order fillet-o-fish, I order double fillet! Why don't people like it?
Good question. I love me some filet-o-fish.
YoungTheFish Yasss!! Same here 😂
YoungTheFish I get that too. I like it much
I like it.. the sandwich and usually always taste the same, but it weirds me out ever since an adult... what fish is it? some like burger king expresses catch of the day.... OK this could be your pet gold fish you put in my sandwich.
and I don't mean to spoil your appetite but most cheap fish comes from fish farms they do not clean the water often and is filled with crap. there's plenty of videos showing it. and well all fish in northern hemisphere is poisoned be it fuckashima oil spills illegal toxic dumps .. Cali dumps trash 5 miles off shore. chemtrail... nothing is proven safe to eat including ponds and rivers etc... pesticides everywhere.
right I know all food is toxic but fish is highest on chain.
even China of all places rejected our fish last year and here they are a killing spree to America with their products.
They are on the value picks menu in Hong Kong and I had so many when I was there - was amazing as a late night snack. Never had it in America.
I remember being a small kid, knowing what the big M meant,
and one of my relatives had a filet o fish as i sneaked a bite of it lmao, and i absolutely loved it, i guess also being First Nation Canadian, helped with eating alot of fish haha
OK. the Felt o fish has always been my favorite since I was a kid. I was born in 62. I've eaten a lot of them. I have to say the fish has gotten bland over the years. I believe it the tarter sauce that keeps me coming back. I think I'll go to a McDonald's after my work.out and get the 2 for 5. My grandmother was friends with the Crocks when I was young. Got to meet him several times at dinner parties.
Mark Hoffman mmm yummy felt
Wow!
First let me say I love the taste of fish .. I believe 90% of people don't .. that's why they will eat filet 0 Fish sandwiches at McDonalds .. maybe it's the tarter sauce their after
Mark Hoffman I felt the fish *ba dum tiss*
Mark Hoffman why not just get the tarter sauce in another sandwich? ?
He uploaded this the day before Ash Wednesday. How timely.
A True Slav 'tis shrove Tuesday
Or Mardi Gras.
It's almost like he plans this stuff.
Or Fat Tuesday, Or Pancake Day, or the last day of Carnivál...Point is the day has a lot of names.
In which language does Carnaval have an accent mark?
One of my favourite items on the menu!
OMG !! That suuuper soft bread and savory filet. OMG SOOOO GOOOD!!!😋
Pineapple burger don't seem all that good, but a pineapple slice ON a burger is really really good
yeah, my absolute favourite of all time, cheesburger with bacon and a slice of grilled (fresh) pineapple.
Found the degenerate who puts pineapples on their pizza
Put a little teriyaki on it also.
I would eat a FOF with pineapple, even.
Theirs a reason why Hawaiian Pizza is at nearly every Pizza shop.
I only eat fillet o fish sandwiches when at McDonald's they are so good.
Zavier Moffit
I have one every few years or so, I like the cheese on them but I order them without the tarter sauce. I live in New Mexico and have found that they're quite good if you add a little green chilé to them for a touch of local spice.
Zavier Moffit wtf
+T 😂😂😂😂😂
T What? Everyone has their own favourite...
I’ve only eaten it twice in my lifetime, once my sister brought it home and the second, when I was touring in Hong Kong
My dad introduced me to the fillet o fish when I was 6. It's literally been the only item I have ever ordered from McDonald's since then
In British schools most offer a fish meal as the main course on Fridays, for the same reasons.
I work at a McDonald's. Even before Lent, we sold plenty of them. They are not "hardly ever" bought.
Relative to the rest of the sandwiches at McDonald's, they are hardly ever purchased.
Fair point, I'll give you guys that.
You'll give them the truth. Neat! Must be a liberal.
you fail to take in the price difference no?
flack youe I don't see how price matters. It may affect sales, but I think the main point they are trying to argue is their popularity compared to the burgers.
I really like how you convert the monetary values of the past in their modern equivalents.
Actually inflation is a relatively good thing, it means we aren't in a recession or depression when we have a steady rate of inflation.
Will Bailey Inflation a good thing? please tell me this is a joke. We are inevitably going to declare bankruptcy
Actually thats not how it works, and Thrasher209 yes it is indeed a good thing when inflation slowly increases, consumer confidence rises, therefore increasing spending and in turn GDP. So, a steady, low inflation rate helps the economy.
No, loans do not make inflation. Inflation is caused by multiple things, and loans may be a small part, but it is not a main cause.
I forgot this was a thing because I never see it on the menu. Would be my go-to favorite if available.
It's my favourite. I love the fillet of fish. I was serious ill with a throat infection a few years ago and when I felt better I drove to the nearest drive through and ordered 6 of them, they tasted so good.
I Fucking Love Fillet O Fish, I Love The Tar Tar Sauce
Hey! Loved this video. Also, I wear glasses and stand in front of a green screen and I know what a pain it can be. I have actually painted the side of my glasses with clear matte finger nail polish which makes them not shiny anymore to prevent the disappearing glasses. You can't tell in the videos, though they do look a little less spiffy in real life.
Alright you've officially made my day! I'm a HUGE fan of you and your work. :-) Thanks for glasses tip also! I'm sending this over to Simon. :-) -Daven
awesome dude! got a reply from Hank Green. Disappearing glasses tip too! Love your work sir
@@freespuddy I wasn't bored, I just have ADHD. I also noticed the edges of his face disappearing into the background constantly.
had to watch again to watch for disappearing glasses
I have metal frames, am autistic and it drives me bonkers the way the light reflects and makes me think something is moving near me! Never thought of the nail polish trick .A million thanks!!!
It does get advertised in the NYC market in February and March, due to lent. Had a bit of a catchy jingle for it just a few years back too,
I discovered these in German McD's late 90's, they called them the fish Mac. Always liked them.
Having worked in one for years, I'll say that a freshly fried filet + a steamed-then-toasted bun + tartar/lettuce/tomato/cheese = better than almost anything on the menu.
I've worked in McDonald's in the UK and the reason why the filet is so popular is because majority (not all) of people who buy a Filet are muslims and they are really popular because McDonald's doesn't serve halal food.
With all the fish & chips shops in the UK, I have to wonder why they go to a McDonalds for their fish. Aren't there like a million other places to get fried fish, probably more different kinds of fish and better quality? In the US I can understand going to McDonalds because there aren't as many fish & chips places.
lestrange I'm guessing because it's the easiest and fastest thing to do and there being so many of them with drive throughs as well. People are shopping in the area, and a McDonald's is around the corner and people know what they're getting at McDonald's as well, instead of chip shops as they're all different (prices, taste, quality)
+James Murray Also I'm guessing they're cheaper and most immigrants are not rich and trying to save money.
James Murray
it's a convienece kinda thing. Theres plenty of mcdonalds at service stations which are great while taking a break from driving. Sometimes when were out and about we just go to mcdonalds instead of searching for a different place to go. Infact I had one today since it was literally just across the vets I visited.
Yuuuurtttt…. You know the vibes!!! 💯
Great now I want a filet o fish thanks Simon
