@@TheRojo387 Well... their Dad had a hand in it somehow? Come to think of it, I've heard a tale that a former business also claimed to be the "original company", in the sense that the premises the brothers bought also sold burgers and shakes before they first set up.
O' in Ireland is the same as Mc or Mac in Scotland, the clan being Clan Donald the founder of the Clan their father being Somerled (another one of his possibly 6 sons went onto found Clan Dougal) who defeated the Vikings out of the Hebrides and revived the Gaelic language in Scotland, he died at the battle of Renfrew in 1164 against think was Malcolm IV's army commanded by the Steward In Gaelic (since they're a Gaelic Clan) is Domhnaill
So, Mr. Kroc convinced the McDonald brothers to leave the royalty agreement out of the sale contract so his investors wouldn't know about it. Doubtless he assured them he would honor the agreement despite it not being written down. Later circumstances would reveal that was a bunch of Kroc.
Irah.Wong My understanding is the King took the throne in a vicious and bloody coup, like Game of Thrones with a side of fries. The most horrifying yet delicious battle of all time.
It's actually proposed he kept it because it had immense value (see movie the Founder), though I can't verify with a quick google search. The argument presented in the movie certainly has merit (imo). People trust McDonald's. "No one's going to buy a burger from a place called Kroc's".
Not just proposed: the scene at the end of _The Founder_ is quoted almost verbatim from speeches Kroc gave later in his life (excerpts of which are actually played over the credits to the movie). He may not have admitted it to the McDonald brothers per se, but he certainly didn't keep it a secret that he liked the name and found it marketable.
I have read in a few places, and the postscript of the movie "Founder" acknowledges this, that McDonalds is not so much a restaurant company as a real estate company...apparently their business model is owning the land that every McDonalds's restaurant is built on, and the multitude of franchise owners put up the movie to build the buildings, buy all the equipment and furniture, and hire the employees, with McDonalds collecting the 'rent' and some percentage of the profits. The risk of making each location work belongs to the franchise owner, and if McDonalds corporate no longer likes a location they can force the franchise owner to close, or renovate the building, etc. I think the above is probably a simplistic view of the actual situation, but perhaps Simon can do a continuation of this video to get into what McDonalds, as a business, actually is......
Ours, I guarantee. :-) I don't know if The Founder is a documentary or a regular "based on a true story" film, but in both cases, accuracy is not what the makers of these things are generally going for- they're trying to entertain. Even one of the greatest documentary makers of all time, Ken Burns, once noted that he's far more concerned with the narrative than getting all the facts perfectly accurate. I will say he does a reasonably good job at accuracy compared to most, but does still take liberties at times.
sooo...... Kroc is fooling mcdonald brothers "legally", the original owner, and give false hope to the first employee of original mcdonald but in the end he crushed them "legally".... so why ppl still asking mcdonald to care about it's employee "legally"? :p
-My whole kingdom for a hamburger sandwich! -With or without onions? -Hamburger!,just plain old hamburger! (his clothes start to shrink) -No goldy!,spare me these! (Hamburger appears infront of him) - With onions! FIN
that McDonald's at 2:00 is the original brick and mortar one it's in San Bernardino CA off E st. it's a museum now; it's in a super ghetto part of town but still interesting.
Brandon Luna The restaurant pictured Is actually a replica of McDonald's #1 (Kroc's first restaurant) built on its original site in Des Plaines, IL. The original structure was torn down in the 80's. The McDonald's Corporation designates this restaurant as its first location, even though the McDonald's brothers had already had a few restaurants up and running. This Des Plaines location is a museum and not a functioning restaurant. The original McDonald's location in San Bernardino has been town down. I believe a Mexican restaurant now stands on the site and has become a makeshift museum not affiliated with the McDonald's Corporation. The oldest McDonald's is now in Downey, CA and it is a functioning restaurant. The Downey site was actually built and operated by the McDonald's brothers.
There's also the fact that the promotional consideration is mentioned right at the beginning of the video and some people get triggered by that sort of thing...
I didn't mind the advertisement. It was about as long as typical television commercial break, and if you really disliked it, you could skip ahead or watch something else.
@ 6:38 "The best way of doing things is to use Blue Apron " Well put! haha, I know that sponsorship is a good thing, but this just sounds a little over the top sponsor love ;)
It's just the contrast between Simon's script presentation voice and his normal talking voice you're picking up on. We actually really liked Blue Apron, lest we wouldn't have advertised for them. :-)
Today I Found Out I'm picking up on improv with direction with little to no connection from Simon with the products / services and Simon's disliking of having to do these ads. The audible one was awful but I just thought I'd mention that with the ads your tearing Simon between two worlds, mediocre autocue skills with advanced animatronics and that British accent people looking for information tend to prefer or narcissistic soulless whoring himself out for money.
"The audible one was awful" But you see, I can tell you definitively that Simon absolutely LOVES audible- from both the user and voice artist side. (You can even find quite a few books on audible narrated by him.) And beyond Simon, I've had an audible subscription for like 4 years now and listen to audiobooks all the time as well. That was a genuine ad spot as well. :-)
Today I Found Out I suppose it is kind of genuine when it's 'Amazon' and how you pair (that's if Simon isn't speaking in third person) could get revenue, as well as save that £6 a month. 'I think I listened to that one' not really selling it, and 'I got this thing, it's like a bluetooth speaker' it is a bluetooth speaker, it's not like one. It's in his eyes, face and body language man, the somewhat choreographed animatronics that he uses during the part of the presentation that's just the excuse for the ad revenue becomes loose. He loses all structure and becomes a tad more human which is where we can read him like a book. Honestly guys, don't try pull the wool over our eyes it's deceptive, just accept your whoring yourselves out for money and not able to liberate yourself.
my grandpa once told me his biggest regret in life is not buying the McDonald's chain, apparently his dad talked him out of it, saying another hamburger restaurant wouldn't go far
I'm not even going to mention the irony of the Founder of McDonalds, literally the ones with the most broken milkshake/ice cream machines, was a milkshake machine salesman.
The first "official" McDonald's is in DesPlaines Illinois. It was the first McDonald's that was run by the McDonald's that exists today. McDonald's bros may have started their BBQ stand operation in California, but McDonald's has been a Chicago Illinois based company since Ray Kroc took it over. Today the world headquarters is in Oakbrook Illinois, which is a Chicago suburb. (It's called McDonald's Plaza) In the next year or two however, the world headquarters will relocate to downtown Chicago's west side once their new world headquarters is completed on the former Harpo Studios land. (Where Opera Winfrey tapped her talk show.)
Simon, you forgot the part about Kroc finding the MacDonald brothers because they were buying so many shake machines. He went to find out where all his machines were being used.
Dude, I understand they are paying you, but about 20% of your video was an advertisement for Blue Apron. If you are that strapped, open a Patreon for monthly payouts. I am sure people would be more than happy to pay, I know I would. We would rather you keep giving us quality content without the unnecessary additions of these paid advertisements.
We put them towards the end (or at the very end whenever possible) after the main content so people don't have to watch them if they don't want to. A lot of advertisers want it in the middle, but we turn all those down, along with turning down any where we don't like the product. In fact we had one company about two weeks ago that offered a massive sum, and while they technically have a good product, it's just not something Simon or I were interested in (a pretty popular mobile app game), so we turned it down. Though our TIFO project fund didn't thank us for that one. ;-) In the end we have a lot of stuff planned for this channel that no form of advertising would ever solely support (or at least not unless we got so some insane subscriber count), so we'll probably start a Patreon at some point to see how that does, and certainly prefer it to ads in a lot of respects. A lot of projects on the horizon I think people will really, really like, that we just need the money for. We'll see how it all shakes out. If we can do the stuff we want to do here and support our team with just Patreon, we'd certainly do that in a heartbeat. :-)
Good to hear it. I look forward to your Patreon opening. I think you will be pleasantly surprised as to how much the community supports channels like yours
Today I Found Out I wanna know was it that mobile game that owns Arnold Schwarzenegger cuz they seem like they have money to burn they even bought an ad during the super bowl. How a moblie game can afford a 30 second super bowl ad and have the terminator be thier spokesman is beyond me but i guess they have free to play figured out
Kroc may have been ruthless, but he commanded a heavily consistent presence and hands-on management style when it came to running McDonald's. He also vigorously defended his interests and protected his customers from outside interests. One such occasion was when he famously refused to open a McDonald's restaurant at Disneyland because Walt Disney wanted Kroc to increase the prices in order to net some additional funds on the side for himself. Kroc wouldn't sell out his customers just because Disney was a friend of his, and as such it was a while before McDonald's made its way to Disney parks. Another instance was his refusal to use soybean filler in McDonald's patties in order to save on preparation costs, as it would've led to a marked decrease in quality and thus brand reputation.
I'm not sure who this McDonald is but, other than owning a chain of restaurant, he also owns a farm with many animals and apparently one of them is a dog named Bingo. LOL
I think we stopped at a McDonalds in 1957 out west. It was a walk up only. Not only did they make burgers fast but with a simple menu the burgers were already made when you walked up and they just grabbed them from the warmer. They tasted better then, they've been dry the few times I've had them in the last twenty years.
born and kinda raised in Glendora, Ca. where the brothers of the film, had a movie theater. located on foothill blvd. my mother also lived in Arcadia, Ca. where they had a business.
i lol'd when simon covered that "hamburgers are among the most profitable food item to sell" and there was a picture of a chicken sandwich. but after typing all of that up, i've realized it might not be that funny.
I have a blue apron and I am perfectly capable of going to the store and picking out what I need to make any dish I want. I don't see your apron folks doing much of a business, who wants to eat the exact same thing as everyone else? That thought creeps me out. No originality, no spontaneity, not a single bit of imagination.
I love meal service plans like Blue Apron. I've been using Sub Basket though and they are very similar. There are so many services like that available now, I have to wonder when the industry consolidation will begin and who will end up the winner(s)?
I almost considered Blue Apron, but then I figured it was cheaper and easier to just go to McDonald's for dinner. ;) The story about McDonald's was interesting though!
at 3:17 the flag is backward on the soldier, and on the wrong shoulder, and that is an unauthorized color unless deployed (the uniform doesn't have a deployment patch so not deployed)
I've actually known this story for a long time, but I've lost track of which book I originally read it in. My first guess is Fast Food Nation - within a few years of it first being published.
6:43 the moment I began to listening to the advertisement, good idea to show the cooking process and how it looks like. If you manage to keep it different then it will be perfect especially in food-related videos, but I do not mind to see the cooking process in any video, and you may sell it as video instructions for BA, cards are good, but seeing how it is done is even better.
Here's an amusing fact from a former McDonald's employee; They're what's called a "penny profit company", only profiting between two and seven cents on the dollar. The rest goes to covering the insane amount of overhead. The gas and electricity alone keeping the grills and fryers at temperature 20 to 24 hours a day ran into several thousand dollars a month. I saw the numbers.
your audio needs a little dab of mastering! try a few decibels clean gain boost (ergo: turn the volume up a little) and some compression/maximizing with Waves L1/L2 limiter (a great free copy is George Yohng's W1, try it!) so you can up the loudness with no peaks. not trying to smartass or critisize here - really enjoying your show and it's something that stood out a little to me comparing to other daily and/or scripted shows (; keep up the great work

So the most important lesson of McDonalds: get it in writing.
Yeah, and it shouldnt be up to the seller to appease the investors of the buyer... That's just bad business sense.

I almost considered Blue Apron, but then I figured it was cheaper and easier to just go to McDonald's for dinner. ;) The story about McDonald's was interesting though!
Simon. He even makes the commercials fun.
i thought you where gonna say this video is brought to you by mcdonalds
user name me too XD
Simon does love McDonald's if you've watched his vlog. :-)
Another famous sponsor, im so happy for you ~
At 2:11 - "Hamburgers are among the most profitable food item to sell" and that looks like a photo of a chicken sandwich to me.
at 3:17 the flag is backward on the soldier, and on the wrong shoulder, and that is an unauthorized color unless deployed (the uniform doesn't have a deployment patch so not deployed)
I've actually known this story for a long time, but I've lost track of which book I originally read it in. My first guess is Fast Food Nation - within a few years of it first being published.
Blue apron seems surely helpful, thanks for the Binging with Babish.
Hi Simon, may I ask where you shop for your shirts? I really like them
Lead The Fallen you can get similar dress shirts at chateau
So, to sum it up, Ray Kroc was a cutthroat swindler. Seems like Ray himself was the original inspiration for the Hamburgler.
A cow has 200kg of usable meat and can make 4500 McDonald's burgers.... That's 44 grams of meat in each burger 😡
Ha, that was the thing that caught my attention too.
That's correct according to McDonald's- about 45 grams of meat uncooked and about 30g cooked.
Obviously that's for the regular burger. They have much bigger patties in other sizes. :-)
Haha i see what you did there in the thumbnail
When I look at a McDonald's sometimes I hear the Imperial March and the snap-hiss of a lightsaber.
I knew all that from new movie about McDonalds. Either movie plays along reality really closely or you just told us the movie :D :D
6:43 the moment I began to listening to the advertisement, good idea to show the cooking process and how it looks like. If you manage to keep it different then it will be perfect especially in food-related videos, but I do not mind to see the cooking process in any video, and you may sell it as video instructions for BA, cards are good, but seeing how it is done is even better.
even may be separate channel for BA cooking
States a fact that Hamburgers was a very profitable product to sell. Shows a picture of a fish sandwich to accompany the fact. XD
Couldn't wait through the 1:03 ad!!
So.... I guess someone just saw Founder?
This script was written 2014... ;-)
Whatches a video about McDonald's, plays an olive garden ad.
he started out selling milkshake machines and they still don't work
Here's an amusing fact from a former McDonald's employee;
They're what's called a "penny profit company", only profiting between two and seven cents on the dollar.
The rest goes to covering the insane amount of overhead. The gas and electricity alone keeping the grills and fryers at temperature 20 to 24 hours a day ran into several thousand dollars a month. I saw the numbers.
Simon your awesome, I wish I could afford some blue apron! lol
i live right across the street from the first McDonald's. its a cool little museum now.
50% finding out stuff and 50% advertisement for some cookware.
extremely well done and informative. ..there's a major movie out now..looks good
Mc is Irish. Mac is Scottish
I love this story since I saw The Founder in theaters. Would highly recommend that movie.
Damn Simon, you're losing your accent when you get excited :O
your audio needs a little dab of mastering! try a few decibels clean gain boost (ergo: turn the volume up a little) and some compression/maximizing with Waves L1/L2 limiter (a great free copy is George Yohng's W1, try it!) so you can up the loudness with no peaks.
not trying to smartass or critisize here - really enjoying your show and it's something that stood out a little to me comparing to other daily and/or scripted shows (; keep up the great work
