My diet is better than the average person, I think, I do low carb, no pasta, rice, bread, etc...I do have an apple on occasion. I was full blown keto for more than 5 yrs and realized I had lost SO much muscle! I thought I was getting enough protein in each day, but obviously I was doing something wrong.

Unfortunately, Dr. Gundry misrepresents the facts in this video [for advertising purposes?]. According to the study that he is apparently referring to, ~40% of the subjects that were given pomegranate juice significantly converted the precursor compounds into Urolithin A. So ~40% had the right microbiome composition for that, not 12%. 12% is a different figure from the same study. 12% of the subjects already had detectable levels of Urolithin A at baseline, without any intervention.

@drgundry I began taking 500 mg of Mitopure daily last December. After about 4 weeks, I noticed that during my elliptical workout, the monitor on the machine that estimates calories burned began ticking up without any additional perceived effort on my part. The increased calorie burn has leveled off at ~14% increase compared to my workouts before beginning my daily dose of Mitopure. I have also noticed subtle changes in my appearance. I am 59 years old and was beginning to develop the sagging turkey neck of aging. My neck has tightened up and the gray peppering of my hair seems to have stopped and some of the gray has reversed. I am physically fit with no chronic conditions. I know that studies have been done with both 500 mg and 1,000 mg of Mitopure but discussions of the results has left me confused. Based on your observation and research, what is your opinion on any added benefits I may expect if I increase my daily dose from 500 mg to 1,000 mg?

Eating pomegranate can work to produce Urolithin A, if you have the right gut bacteria to make Urolithin A from the ellagitannins in pomegranate. Not everyone has that gut bacteria, though. So I would take bacillus coagulans (a bacteria that does produce Urolithin A from the ellagitannins in pomegranate) as a supplement, and take it with pomegranate.

This is good info. I could do without the regurgitation of the postulation that mitochondria are billions of year old and they made a “deal”.
I think the mouth bacteria has something to do with it too, as its also in rose hips , and when I eat rose hips I get a big boost and strength and stamina, but they need to be in season and the right soils.
Note this supplement is super expensive and you need to use for up to 3 mths to see a benefit, if any.
Bit of a shake down IMO.
Dr Grundy has lots of good info to pass on but the science is always changing so we all have to do our own research.
I took his Total Gut Rehab and ended up getting symptoms of mast cell activation disorder. It may work for some folks but it didnt work for me.

I (as a nutritional toxicologist) follow Gundry for quite some time now and appreciate his advice, but slowly he moved more to commercial advertising than providing real scientific data and a balanced review. I am keto for a long time now and low carb is the way to get a good health, but he has deviated too much now from his initial basis.

We need more doctors like Dr. Gundry. He so very well explains complex medical science to lay men. I feel like am sitting in a medical college lecture learning finally how human body works😂. Got the concept but curious to know how so many people from different cultures, mostly also from “not so rich” countries have easily crossed their 90s without taking any such supplements. I understand if this is used as a cure for ongoing disease but a healthy person, at younger age, just taking these supplements scares me personally. Anything new without enough research I won’t ingest into my system. I am okay when it comes to fasting, diets etc but not sure I will go for this supplement. Rather go for pomegranate supplements which don’t have sugar in it.

Hi Dr. Gundry, thank you for your discussion regarding Urolithin A. One takeaway question that remains is how can an individual determine whether or not they have the ability to produce Urolithin A in their gut? Is there some way to test for this?

BTW, how about the theory that mitochodrial dysfunction is in its turn caused by lateral transfer of bacterial DNA into our mitochondrial/cell DNA proper? And not only by pathogens but also by commensal bacteria ( + fungi &viruses)? So then our cells become behaving like pathogens?
And the sticky biofilms in the gut acting as a source of continuous, life-long infection and cell/mitochondrial DNA pathological transformation??
Would you still love your microbiome then or rather go on a cleanse?
