I think this is something that can really cause problems in a relationship between a Filipina and a westerner. To a westerner, “saving face” can be interpreted as dishonesty or deceptiveness.

And on the other side Filipinos can perceive us to be rude and insulting. I've had this happen before in Thailand.

All the issues spoken about in this video are toxic to a marriage between a Filipina and a "westerner". It can get so extreme that the Filipina never admits she's wrong and lies to her husband to "save face". I love my wife to death, but the saving face and lies are part of her culture that are issues in our marriage. It's a lot more serious than the underarm odor in a jeepney example spoken in this video. This behavior and destroy a relationship.

I think it's part of being an adult is when you're able to admit you made a mistake. That's how you learn. The same thing by telling and accepting the truth from someone. If you're wise you would know if someone is lying to you and you couldn't count on the person in time of need. TC God bless y'all 🙏✝️ ❤️ Rubeauti 😁

Admitting or recognizing of doing something wrong is very crucial to self development. At the end of the day, No one is perfect. There's all always room for improvement. Maturity is something most Filipinas lack.

    Good evening Rebeauti !
Always an interesting subject, thank you 😊!
The definition of saving face varies depending on the people and their culture.
It is all part of the phenomenon of “face” as the public image that a person claims for her/himself.
It is often a communicative strategy that one uses to enact self-face, then to uphold, support, or challenge another person's “face".
It is linked to an individual's identity, within a social world, and how that identity is created, reinforced, diminished, and maintained in communicative interactions.
You find saving face mainly within collectivist cultures such as China, South Korea, and Japan, societies that support the idea of maintaining the other-face for self-dignity and self-respect.
Saving face is always related to the necessity of having a “positive face”, one’s positive consistent self-image or personality, always including the necessary and indispensable desire that this self-image needs to be appreciated, approved and claimed by interactants.
Saving face progress through a gradual increase in volume.
It also builds up through position in society, according to wealth, power, ability.
It can establish social ties that in practice will reach such extent as the avoidance of acts that would cause unfavorable comment.
Or, to the contrary, ignore the obvious to avoid evidence and confrontation.
By opposition, let’s not forget that with saving face there is the all importance of "losing face", to be avoided at all cost, a question of honour, extremely prominent within the Japanese culture.
In Japan, where it is such a fact of life that there were reported many cases of suicide because of loss of face, or of suicide in order to punish another person, or to cause through suicide endless difficulties or even punishment to the other person.
In parallel with the notion of shame in Chinese society.
Where the value of "saving face" can be linked also to a Confucian form of protest and collective action.
Face-saving is generally viewed as more important in high context cultures such as China or Japan than in low-context ones such as the United States or Europe for instance.
The importance of “having face” and of being related to those who do, opens often a plethora of relationship politics in Asian culture:
Name dropping, eagerness to associate with the rich and famous, the use of external status symbols, sensitivity to insult, lavish gift-giving, the use of titles, the sedulous avoidance of criticism, all require considerable adjustments within someone position in social life.
It comes from the way, manner, people from different cultures manage meeting others, establishing rapport, and disagreements or disputes: that is self-image when communicating with others.
In conflicts, when one's face is threatened, the person tends to save or restore his or her face, often in spite of the obvious, to preserve one’s position and self-esteem.
But it is also using face as a politeness phenomena maintaining the co-operative nature of language interchange, communication within a group of friends, co-workers or family.
I guess that the Filipino approach has been influenced, among many others, by Chinese immigration.
In China face, Miàn (面), translates as personal esteem, countenance, surface, side.
It is seen in words like:
miànzi 面子 or face, side, hence reputation, prestige, self-respect, honour, social standing.
miànmù 面目 or face , eyes, look, appearance, hence respect.
miànpí. 面皮 or facial skin, complexion, hence feelings and sensitivity.
qíngmian 情面 or feelings face, hence favour, partiality, and kindness.
In Cambodia, the Khmer word for face is muk, មុខ, literally.
Bat muk, បាត់មុខ is literally “lose face”.
Tuk muk ទុកមុខ is “save face” or “preserve face”.
The concept of "face" or chemyeon 체면, and hanja, ania, 體面 is extremely important in Korean culture.
The Thai word for face is naa หน้า.
There are basically two main ways of expressing loss of face: One, sia naa, เสียหน้า translates literally as 'lose face. Another term, khai naa ขายหน้า literally translates as “sale of face”.
This concept is understood and treated much the same in Cambodia, Korea, Thailand as anywhere else in South Asia, and of course in the Philippines 🇵🇭!
In Arabic, the expression hafiza mã’ al-wakh حفظ ماء الوجه that translates literally as save the face's water', is used to mean save face.
The entire Arab culture of social and family behavior is based around the islamic concepts of dignity, or "face".
Nevertheless, the conception of “face” is universal, and not exclusive to the Philippines.
The difference is the frequency and the “necessity” of a “reaction” in relation with the “gravity of the offence”.
In Europe saving face is still important, probably a relic of past ancient cultures, but has been influenced by religions and subject to “evolution” which doesn’t mean that it is not practiced anymore.
    To the contrary.
However, the repercussions and consequences have not the same impact and gravity, often forgotten the next day.
The English semantic field for face and saving face is restrained in relation with prestige and honour, respect, dignity, status, reputation, and social acceptance, or good name, but is considerably smaller than the corresponding Asian field.
The lose verb in lose face is much more a notion of failing to maintain, while the save in save face is the notion of avoiding any loss or preventing any damage.
It is more a “commercial” interpretation by comparison, rather than a shameful position, where, of course, fair play and stiff-upper-lip prevails, above all possible embarrassment.
    One simply ignores the problem.

100% yes there is and it is one of the main things that holds the nation back economically. It is a product of Filipinos mainland Asian origins (partial). The solution ..... Truth before face. It takes Centuries to achieve. A tribe or nation must literally reprogram themselves to value Truth above all else .......... even the saving face/reputation of self and/or family members. Europeans historically accomplished this thru Centuries of internal Tribal warfare where lying to a superior was seen in a VERY bad light even to the point of being executed. Speaking truth before face became a mark of honor and thus was VERY much valued in society. A man's word is his bond .... that sort of mentality. There is a world of difference between "Saving Face" vs maintaining one's personal and family honor. One (Saving face) strives to avoid the eyes of others in the tribe while the other (truth and honor) seeks to validate one's standing within that tribe under the gaze of ALL the tribal members. If you want to get an idea of how this came about and how ingrained in Norther European culture Truth before Face is then read "Germania" by Tacitus. Here is an amazing video of just how far my Tribal ancestors took this concept. ua-cam.com/video/pcL0J_ndaUc/v-deo.html

    • @thedreamer9011
      @thedreamer9011 Рік тому +1

It's not a big deal in the West though. Wrongdoing is not the same as an argument. You don't have to argue with someone to tell them about something they did wrong. You just have a civil conversation. If it becomes an argument then there is a lack of maturity. Admitting or recognizing of doing something wrong is very crucial to self development. At the end of the day, No one is perfect.

I discovered over decades that if you have aggressive behavior toward a Filipino (if the Filipino provoked it) in front of other Filipinos then it ends bad for the American. But, if you can lure the Filipino to a one on one place (out of the view or earshot of others) then the problem can be resolved without issue for the foreigners. There have only been about 10 times I was disrespected to the point of confrontation with 2 being my fault (ignorance of the culture). If you have disagreement, do your best to keep it from public eyes and be diplomatic and it should end well. You might even have a new friend out of it.

That body odor on the bus example didn’t fit my definition of “saving face”.
I don’t wanna insult all Filipinos, but in my opinion not be able to admit you’re wrong is insecurity. If you’re a confident person you can admit you’re wrong or don’t know something. At least an American that fits that description is insecure in themselves.
If you’re an American. Filipino time is loser time. You can’t pull that here and not pi$$ everyone you know off and get fired from your job.
I HATE the silent treatment. 😆

Saving Face is a common culture thing all across Asia. Never make a person look bad in public. Almost every country in Asia is like that. It is an inability to admit when you are wrong or made a mistake. In the Philippines, you can ask someone for directions and they will give you directions even if they don't know where the place is! They won't tell you "sorry, I don't know where that is" becausethey believethey should know ... I have been sent totally in the wrong direction before 🤨
It would have been more helpful if they just told me they didn't know 🤭

I think that it is in your culture to not change your mind on a subject, or idea, even if you can be proven wrong. Some of the examples you both are talking about, especially the riding next to someone that was not clean smelling, is not something I would worry about as long if you move, you won’t find another type where you move to. Yes the being told you are wrong is the big problem, I see in your culture as they believe they can’t be wrong on anything. The Filipino time is a big issue, for people in the west, because you will be punished, and even fired from your Job for this. The excuses don’t work here in the US. Conflict is not good for anyone, and neither is gossip or chica chica. To talk behind someone’s back is letting others that you are two faced, as you are not being real with everyone, and many times that comes back to that person, from somebody, and they will be offended. Tampo, is a sign of immaturity to me, and if my Filipina does that, I will just go and find others to hang out with, for you to get over it, so there will be no more hurt. Great content Ladies😊😊
