When I was growing up in Norway, a big part of the education from both family and the school was to learn not to throw garbage in the streets, and especially NOT in nature. The whole school would at times be ordered class by class to walk along the roads in the area and collect any garbage. We were also thoroughly instructed how to behave in traffick. Walk on the left side of the road, so you can see what is coming. Use reflective items and wear white clothes if possible during dark nights when walking. Stretch out your hand, look both right and left, and any car or motorbike MUST stop for you if that is at a zebra crossing. Failure to stop for crossing people means a large fine and some nasty comments on ur drivers lisence. I have lived more than 8 years in the Philippines, and driving around both in Cebu and in Mindanao. People are dressed in black clothes, virtually invisible to drivers. Some oncoming cars will put on blinding extra lights, so you can not really see anything in front of you and if they park, they have never understood the point of a parking light, so all their lights will blind oncoming drivers, putting everybody in danger. The garbage is tossed everywhere as the kids have a snack: They will just drop the plastic right there on the spot. And there is not really a garbage collecting system in place, neither are there public garbage bins. I know that one of the reasons for that, is that thieves steal those garbage bins. But if you make them in Plastic or Fibre Glass in stead of metal , those thieves might not be so interested in removing them I suggest that these issues become a larger part of the curriculum in the School system, and also paid TV adds to instruct the population to be aware of keeping the country clean, and to behave in a good manner on and along the roads. When they ban plastic bags, I say: The plastic bags do not find their way by themselves into the rivers, lakes and the ocean. The PEOPLE must be instructed how to behave.
I’ve been to 25 countries and what I find is people are pretty much the same anywhere you go. How you get along with the locals depends on what kind of vibe you’re putting off towards those locals. Be respectful, patient and no matter what ALWAYS speak calmly.

Which there's normally a reply back with quick honks saying back "I see you". Three quick honks = I'm here and moving fast. Don't come out in front of me. This can slowly breed resentment towards the foreigner. It's the same everywhere. It's just a matter of time. Maybe this is why living in Thailand is so much more difficult than in the Philippines? The system in Thailand is much more restrictive.
in my experience in the Philippines, short honks are for safety. They want the motorcyclist or vehicle near them to know they are there and to be careful.
Yes I understand that. But there seems to be a protocol to it. I've noticed there was series of different styles. In my area of the US. One quick beeps means " get off your phone and pay attention" because the light has changed. One long blast means "GET OFF YOUR PHONE AND PAY ATTENTION!!!" 😄 I'll pay attention and see if I can sort it out myself on my visit.
I'm now living with my beautiful Filipino girlfriend on Panglao Island, and everyone has treated me with friendship, kindness and respect. I think for the most part the women that are interested in dating and potentially marrying a foreigner are pretty much off the local Philippines radar. I don't think that the majority of men resent this. Love is love!
Thanks for the video. Maybe gardens aren't common because seeds cost money and a lot of Filipinos don't eat them much. I do know some that have gardens in locations away from their homes.
We recycle plastic, glass , paper, and aluminum. All of those items can be made into new items. Plastics can be transformed into carpets or toys. Paper into insulation or toilet paper or drink carriers. Etc. It would also save you money in the long run. Here there are large garbage bins of different colors. Each color is for the different recyclables. The bins are distributed to different areas and we go to them and drop off each according to correct bin.
Speaking of hair styles... I like how you brought your hair forward from the back, and swept your front hair forward. Nice look. Maybe others have done it, but this is the first time I've seen it like that.
Outstanding content and delivery, Rubeauti! Here in the USA I have also noticed a reluctance of some educated and affluent people when it comes to raising vegetables. Flowers, shrubberies, and their esthetics are sufficiently "cultured" to be acceptable topics at cocktail parties, but vegetables? Not so much. I had two parents who grew up in the Dust Bowl in Kansas; their families survived on subsistence-level gardening. As adults and perhaps as a reaction to their childhoods, neither would go anywhere near dirt, a vegetable garden, or even yard work if at all possible. Or maybe Philippine fruit trees that offer shade create too much shade for vegetable gardens? Of course, I don't know but hope to visit the Philippines soon for some answers, LOTS of answers ;)

Even jobs like pumping gas or checking groceries demand degrees over there. That is the Philippines way of keeping a big chunk of the population out of the job market and filling the coffers of the education industry. Once out of college the difference between a high school degree and a college degree in a white color job is about 3,000 pesos, less than $60.00 per month. A lot wind up doing 555 or endo contracts and making less than the minimum wage even with the degree. Five months working after paying 10K in requirements like background checks and medical checks, then they are laid off to prevent the company from having to pay benefits like SSS.

The tenth question about fruits and vegetables was odd. Everytime I've been in the Philippines almost every dish has fruit or vegetables in it. They even use sweet potatoes leaves in dishes. The wide list of fruits and vegetables grown in the Philippines is amazing. Almost every day someone is going to the yard to harvest something to prepare dishes. Fish is the most often used ingredient in the Filipino diet. Like every day. Pork is a luxury like beef. After fish is probably chicken
The first time I went to Lopez Jeana, (Mindanao), my ex's brother followed us everywhere, but only smiled politely. He never spoke. One day, he said something to her, and she told me, "Jimmy knew English when he went to university, but that was six years ago. He hasn't spoken English since, and feels embarrassed... but wants to try to talk to you. I said, "tell Jimmy that I'm sure his English is way better than my Cebuano or my Tagalog, and I admire the fact that he knows more than one language, much less three or four" (they also had more regional dialects). Within 10 minutes, we were talking to each other like we knew each other for 20 years.
I also expirenced its hard to find someone to connect to. Most ones I have met shy away. Ask about money then I shy away. Also several have kids after a couple of dates I learn about it and I am not interested in other mans kids.

That question about what Filipino men think about foreigners taking their women..... I've seen other channels that say Filipino beauty standards have a lot to do with it. Filipino men prefer chubbier whiter women, and foreigners prefer thinner, tanned women -- so they are not fishing in the same pond! The Filipino women westerners tend to go for, often consider themselves ugly, because of local beauty standards.
Frank's question about the honking horns has merit. As a retired truck driver, the 1st thing I wanted to learn here were the rules of the road. I drive with windows slightly down on both sides of the car to that I can hear traffic. Bikes will "beep" to let you know that they are in your blind spot and can't be seen in the mirrors. If driving a car, bikes will be passing on both sides of you, people often stop on the right side blocking the flow of bikes and trikes on the right. They will beep and merge into the path of cars often without looking for a clear opening. (Be very careful of the guys moving from the right shoulder, 9 times out of 10, they moved because of a blocked path, so prepare to use your brakes quickly. For those passing on the left (much like lane splitting in California) they ride on or even across the dotted line. Rarely will they ride next to you (usually just in front, or just behind) they will beep when they are going to be next to you, especially if there is a gap that gives you a opportunity to also pass. If I'm traveling to the farm and away from town, I will move over as far as needed so that they can safely pass. This is usually when I get 2-3 beeps. They are saying thank you. If you are pulling up from a cross street, people will beep to let you know that they are going through without stopping. Just letting you know that they are there. Big trucks and busses always honk 2-3 times if you give them some room. Also, once a truck or bus has passed me, I beep twice to let them know that it's safe to come back over. It's a lot different than the states, but for the most part it's organized chaos..😂 😂 you don't see road rage, and people just allow that some people might be in a big hurry 🤷♂️. My 1st 3 weeks here, I hired drivers and asked lots of questions. Now I actually feel confident and comfortable driving here. Just be kind to pedestrians and if traffic is really heavy, let people turn if there is a gap. You will catch up to the people in front of you. So be polite and the people will wave and say thanks 👍 if you have good safe road manners. Honking and beeping are necessary for safety. I almost forgot, when we go to the farm, and can't see around a curve, we always beep, and so do the bikes. It's to avoid a head-on collision. Drive safely and explore paradise 😊
Everything I have read suggests a fairly large percentage of Filipinos are English speakers as well making it a second lingua franca. I mean I read one report that said more Filipinos speak English than there are citizens and residents in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so that would be a not insignificant percentage of the population.

Nice Q and A video Rubeauti! Myself think most subjects discussed are cultural behaviors. Some can be seen as good, bad, or funny depending on the observer and situation. For example in regards to gardening, it’s considered a rewarding hobby in here. You prepare the soil, plant your seeds, water and protect your plants from pests, and then collect the fruits of your labor. There is a bond “Zen” like experience with Mother Earth that is very rewarding. Yet, many will cringe at the thought when they can go to market and buy a vegetable or fruit.

I was just informed by the "World Zoom" channel that cities in the PH dump untreated sewage directly into the ocean. Do Filipinos consider where the sewage is discharged when deciding what beach to go to?
Up until the 1990s the same was true in the USA for many lakes and oceanfront cities. That is when the state's finally started requiring Advanced Wastewater Treatment. It costs a tremendous amount of money to build those plants. Doing this is really bad for the Philippines.

The best way to learn English is to speak it with a native speaker, don't get embarrassed, and be able to accept correcting. Talk with someone you're comfortable with, make mistakes and let them correct you to help you learn it better. They're not looking down on you because you don't speak it properly and make mistakes, they know it's not your 1st language. Even native speaker's don't speak English perfectly, as long as the other person understands what you're saying, it doesn't really matter HOW you say it. Me personally, I don't have a problem with LGBTQ people, as long as they're not trying to force their lifestyle and beliefs onto me, let them be who they choose to be. If they are trying to force it onto me, I can choose to walk away and ignore them. As far as the question about finding a Filipina to commit to a foreigner, ALL of the Filipina's around him are different, there's ONLY 1 common denominator, the foreigner is, he is the problem. What ever it is he is doing to try to attract one is WRONG. Don't expect them to throw themselves at your feet, they do respect themselves, you need to PROVE your intentions and EARN their trust 1st. Although, the question may have just been asked improperly, maybe he meant "... find a GOOD Filipina." In which case, I'd say you need to go to places that the type you are looking for would be. You go to a bar, all you will find are party girls, you go to church you find religious ones, you go to a store and see employees you find hard working and dedicated women. I've seen a few interviews with Filipino's and they were asked how they felt about foreigners coming there. They all pretty much said the same thing, they don't mind at all, as long as he makes the woman happy and takes care of her and it is the Filipina's choice who she is with, and 1 went so far to say he didn't care because the women foreigners are interested in are the ones Filipino's don't want.
This is a great video by the way. I think I can answer some of your questions. Some of the people living in the province are living on leased land and they don't have permission to have the gardens. A kilo of rice can feed more than a kilo of banana. Everyone knows rice is life in the Philippines. Not saying that I'm a bad way. It's. Just a fact of life. Also I believe pork is cheaper than chicken. So if there is a choice of protein. Then pork will be it. Forgeiners don't get that even 20 pesos is a lot to some Filipino. Needing a degree is similar in the US. Most Americans assume a degree is required for many jobs, but that's not exactly true. It's just like in PH, if an employer gets a lot of applications they can be picky. Only those with a degree. If still too many they can sort by GPA or by different schools. A software degree from MIT or Stanford is not the same as one from University of Phoenix. I was a software engineer and we'd certainly hire someone who was self taught if they demonstrated work in the area we needed. Once we even took in anyone who wanted to try. We gave them a few days of training and see how they did. This college degree thing is kind of scam businesses push. It moves training from their cost to the employee's cost.
Some American, mostly men, use the phrase "rape and pillage" in a less then violent way. A company can "rape and pillage" the assets and employees from recent merger of another company. foe example. Or a group of male friends can humorously refer to going out to clubs as "we are going to hit the club and take no prisoners" None of this is meant with actual violence ever.
Just a minor correction on language. The most widely spoken and understood language in the Philippines is Bisaya/Cebuano followed by Tagalog and then English. People from the north of the country always say that Tagalog is the first language of the country because it is their first language or common language. Of course it is the official language of the country but again this is because the seat of government in Manila is in the centre of the Tagalog language region of the country. As for pee that are in or beginning a relationship with someone in the Philippines, if you want to learn their language then find out what is the commonly spoken language in there part of the country usually Tagalog in the North and Bisaya in central and southern areas and learn that language. By learning these languages you will be learning the language that will allow you to communicate easily with your partner and her family but also the maximum number of people from the part of the country where they live.

I appreciate you, Rubeauti! I watch every episode. But I want to point out that like everyone else, you are a product of your own culture, including having absorbed some of its prejudices. For example, you say that sometimes transgenders won't work in certain professions like engineering because the employer is conservative and will require dress codes the potential employee could not meet, but that this is not a problem. I challenge you to reconsider your opinion that this just "is what it is", and there is no issue because Filipinos are understanding people who have respect for the company. The company is obligated to have respect for its employees too. In my opinion, this is another example of how it is easy for the powerful to take advantage of the weak in Fiipino culture because of the tremendous emphasis on respect for authority. But respect should go both ways. 😘

I am not saying I know everything about your culture, but I do have about 35 years of experience in that culture. I know that your description is true. Maybe it's just hard to grow fruits and vegetables there. It looks like everything grows so fast that it's probably difficult to keep up with weeds and all the things that will attack your crops. Or per the translator used for Tagalog: Mahirap lang siguro magtanim ng mga prutas at gulay doon. My father is Ilocano and my Mother is Bisaya, my Dad communicate in English to her, since none of them can speak Tagalog. My Dad is a Professor in a University, We speak English at home, but we speak Bisaya to my mother. in my experience in the Philippines, short honks are for safety. They want the motorcyclist or vehicle near them to know they are there and to be careful.

In my area of the US.
One quick beeps means " get off your phone and pay attention" because the light has changed.

I'm now living with my beautiful Filipino girlfriend on Panglao Island, and everyone has treated me with friendship, kindness and respect. I think for the most part the women that are interested in dating and potentially marrying a foreigner are pretty much off the local Philippines radar. I don't think that the majority of men resent this. Love is love!

We recycle plastic, glass , paper, and aluminum. All of those items can be made into new items. Plastics can be transformed into carpets or toys. Paper into insulation or toilet paper or drink carriers. Etc. It would also save you money in the long run. Here there are large garbage bins of different colors. Each color is for the different recyclables. The bins are distributed to different areas and we go to them and drop off each according to correct bin.

Outstanding content and delivery, Rubeauti! Here in the USA I have also noticed a reluctance of some educated and affluent people when it comes to raising vegetables. Flowers, shrubberies, and their esthetics are sufficiently "cultured" to be acceptable topics at cocktail parties, but vegetables? Not so much. I had two parents who grew up in the Dust Bowl in Kansas; their families survived on subsistence-level gardening. As adults and perhaps as a reaction to their childhoods, neither would go anywhere near dirt, a vegetable garden, or even yard work if at all possible. Or maybe Philippine fruit trees that offer shade create too much shade for vegetable gardens? Of course, I don't know but hope to visit the Philippines soon for some answers, LOTS of answers ;)

Even jobs like pumping gas or checking groceries demand degrees over there. That is the Philippines way of keeping a big chunk of the population out of the job market and filling the coffers of the education industry. Once out of college the difference between a high school degree and a college degree in a white color job is about 3,000 pesos, less than $60.00 per month. A lot wind up doing 555 or endo contracts and making less than the minimum wage even with the degree. Five months working after paying 10K in requirements like background checks and medical checks, then they are laid off to prevent the company from having to pay benefits like SSS.
I think it's easier to commit once you meet in person. That way they can see if you're serious or just playing.

I wasn't aware of the 'preparing for manhood' and the responsibilities thereof that were part of the circumcision process and timing; an infant, circumcised at birth or soon after would not undergo this right of passage into manhood. The tenth question about fruits and vegetables was odd. Everytime I've been in the Philippines almost every dish has fruit or vegetables in it. They even use sweet potatoes leaves in dishes. The wide list of fruits and vegetables grown in the Philippines is amazing. Almost every day someone is going to the yard to harvest something to prepare dishes. Fish is the most often used ingredient in the Filipino diet. Like every day. Pork is a luxury like beef. After fish is probably chicken

The first time I went to Lopez Jeana, (Mindanao), my ex's brother followed us everywhere, but only smiled politely. He never spoke.
One day, he said something to her, and she told me, "Jimmy knew English when he went to university, but that was six years ago. He hasn't spoken English since, and feels embarrassed... but wants to try to talk to you.
I said, "tell Jimmy that I'm sure his English is way better than my Cebuano or my Tagalog, and I admire the fact that he knows more than one language, much less three or four" (they also had more regional dialects).
Within 10 minutes, we were talking to each other like we knew each other for 20 years.
I also expirenced its hard to find someone to connect to. Most ones I have met shy away. Ask about money then I shy away. Also several have kids after a couple of dates I learn about it and I am not interested in other mans kids.

I've seen other channels that say Filipino beauty standards have a lot to do with it. Filipino men prefer chubbier whiter women, and foreigners prefer thinner, tanned women -- so they are not fishing in the same pond! The Filipino women westerners tend to go for, often consider themselves ugly, because of local beauty standards.

Frank's question about the honking horns has merit. As a retired truck driver, the 1st thing I wanted to learn here were the rules of the road.
I drive with windows slightly down on both sides of the car to that I can hear traffic. Bikes will "beep" to let you know that they are in your blind spot and can't be seen in the mirrors. If driving a car, bikes will be passing on both sides of you, people often stop on the right side blocking the flow of bikes and trikes on the right. They will beep and merge into the path of cars often without looking for a clear opening. (Be very careful of the guys moving from the right shoulder, 9 times out of 10, they moved because of a blocked path, so prepare to use your brakes quickly.
For those passing on the left (much like lane splitting in California) they ride on or even across the dotted line. Rarely will they ride next to you (usually just in front, or just behind) they will beep when they are going to be next to you, especially if there is a gap that gives you a opportunity to also pass.
If I'm traveling to the farm and away from town, I will move over as far as needed so that they can safely pass. This is usually when I get 2-3 beeps. They are saying thank you.
If you are pulling up from a cross street, people will beep to let you know that they are going through without stopping. Just letting you know that they are there. Big trucks and busses always honk 2-3 times if you give them some room. Also, once a truck or bus has passed me, I beep twice to let them know that it's safe to come back over.
It's a lot different than the states, but for the most part it's organized chaos..😂 😂 you don't see road rage, and people just allow that some people might be in a big hurry 🤷♂️.
My 1st 3 weeks here, I hired drivers and asked lots of questions. Now I actually feel confident and comfortable driving here.
Just be kind to pedestrians and if traffic is really heavy, let people turn if there is a gap. You will catch up to the people in front of you. So be polite and the people will wave and say thanks 👍 if you have good safe road manners.
Honking and beeping are necessary for safety.
I almost forgot, when we go to the farm, and can't see around a curve, we always beep, and so do the bikes. It's to avoid a head-on collision.

Everything I have read suggests a fairly large percentage of Filipinos are English speakers as well making it a second lingua franca. I mean I read one report that said more Filipinos speak English than there are citizens and residents in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so that would be a not insignificant percentage of the population.

Nice Q and A video Rubeauti! Myself think most subjects discussed are cultural behaviors. Some can be seen as good, bad, or funny depending on the observer and situation. For example in regards to gardening, it’s considered a rewarding hobby in here. You prepare the soil, plant your seeds, water and protect your plants from pests, and then collect the fruits of your labor. There is a bond “Zen” like experience with Mother Earth that is very rewarding. Yet, many will cringe at the thought when they can go to market and buy a vegetable or fruit.

I was just informed by the "World Zoom" channel that cities in the PH dump untreated sewage directly into the ocean. Do Filipinos consider where the sewage is discharged when deciding what beach to go to?
Up until the 1990s the same was true in the USA for many lakes and oceanfront cities. That is when the state's finally started requiring Advanced Wastewater Treatment. It costs a tremendous amount of money to build those plants. Doing this is really bad for the Philippines.

The best way to learn English is to speak it with a native speaker, don't get embarrassed, and be able to accept correcting. Talk with someone you're comfortable with, make mistakes and let them correct you to help you learn it better. They're not looking down on you because you don't speak it properly and make mistakes, they know it's not your 1st language. Even native speaker's don't speak English perfectly, as long as the other person understands what you're saying, it doesn't really matter HOW you say it. Me personally, I don't have a problem with LGBTQ people, as long as they're not trying to force their lifestyle and beliefs onto me, let them be who they choose to be. If they are trying to force it onto me, I can choose to walk away and ignore them.
As far as the question about finding a Filipina to commit to a foreigner, ALL of the Filipina's around him are different, there's ONLY 1 common denominator, the foreigner is, he is the problem. What ever it is he is doing to try to attract one is WRONG. Don't expect them to throw themselves at your feet, they do respect themselves, you need to PROVE your intentions and EARN their trust 1st. Although, the question may have just been asked improperly, maybe he meant "... find a GOOD Filipina." In which case, I'd say you need to go to places that the type you are looking for would be. You go to a bar, all you will find are party girls, you go to church you find religious ones, you go to a store and see employees you find hard working and dedicated women.
I've seen a few interviews with Filipino's and they were asked how they felt about foreigners coming there. They all pretty much said the same thing, they don't mind at all, as long as he makes the woman happy and takes care of her and it is the Filipina's choice who she is with, and 1 went so far to say he didn't care because the women foreigners are interested in are the ones Filipino's don't want.

This is a great video by the way. I think I can answer some of your questions. Some of the people living in the province are living on leased land and they don't have permission to have the gardens. A kilo of rice can feed more than a kilo of banana. Everyone knows rice is life in the Philippines. Not saying that I'm a bad way. It's. Just a fact of life. Also I believe pork is cheaper than chicken. So if there is a choice of protein. Then pork will be it. Forgeiners don't get that even 20 pesos is a lot to some Filipino. I can see why some think we are rich. I used to think that about Japanese people because of how expensive it is there. But they are on the struggle like all of us.
People there don't grow gardens because they don't have access to water daily. You can't grow a garden on rainfall.

I have one question. In mid april i will visit the Philippines and fly via Manila to Dumaguete. Is it still compulsory to wear a mask? And if so where? Can you answer that for me?
Needing a degree is similar in the US. Most Americans assume a degree is required for many jobs, but that's not exactly true. It's just like in PH, if an employer gets a lot of applications they can be picky. Only those with a degree. If still too many they can sort by GPA or by different schools. A software degree from MIT or Stanford is not the same as one from University of Phoenix. I was a software engineer and we'd certainly hire someone who was self taught if they demonstrated work in the area we needed. Once we even took in anyone who wanted to try. We gave them a few days of training and see how they did.
This college degree thing is kind of scam businesses push. It moves training from their cost to the employee's cost.

Some American, mostly men, use the phrase "rape and pillage" in a less then violent way. A company can "rape and pillage" the assets and employees from recent merger of another company. foe example. Or a group of male friends can humorously refer to going out to clubs as "we are going to hit the club and take no prisoners" None of this is meant with actual violence ever.

Just a minor correction on language. The most widely spoken and understood language in the Philippines is Bisaya/Cebuano followed by Tagalog and then English. People from the north of the country always say that Tagalog is the first language of the country because it is their first language or common language. Of course it is the official language of the country but again this is because the seat of government in Manila is in the centre of the Tagalog language region of the country. As for pee that are in or beginning a relationship with someone in the Philippines, if you want to learn their language then find out what is the commonly spoken language in there part of the country usually Tagalog in the North and Bisaya in central and southern areas and learn that language. By learning these languages you will be learning the language that will allow you to communicate easily with your partner and her family but also the maximum number of people from the part of the country where they live.
At the beginning of answering question #10, she said that chicken and pork are more expensive than vegetables and that's why Filipinos choose to eat chicken and pork. But at the end of the answer, she said vegetables are more expensive. I'm confused!! Which one is it?
I appreciate you, Rubeauti! I watch every episode. But I want to point out that like everyone else, you are a product of your own culture, including having absorbed some of its prejudices. For example, you say that sometimes transgenders won't work in certain professions like engineering because the employer is conservative and will require dress codes the potential employee could not meet, but that this is not a problem. I challenge you to reconsider your opinion that this just "is what it is", and there is no issue because Filipinos are understanding people who have respect for the company. The company is obligated to have respect for its employees too. In my opinion, this is another example of how it is easy for the powerful to take advantage of the weak in Fiipino culture because of the tremendous emphasis on respect for authority. But respect should go both ways. 😘
