Just a quick tip to help keep the belt from slippping off all of the other pulleys ... immediately after getting the belt off of the alternator pulley, pull the belt upwards with a short bungee cord and attach the bungee cord to the underside of the hood (figure out where you are attaching the bungee cord on the hood before taking the belt off). This will keep the belt in tension (while your replaceig the alternator), so that it doesn't get loose and slip off all the other pulleys ... what a pain it is to get the belt back on correctly if it falls off.
Thank you for your help! I hav ea 2013 Honda Civic LX with around 150K miles. One morning my car had a hard time starting up and the next day I had to get it jump started. I think it was because I left the trunk open in the morning hours without knowing about it. I looked at your video and invested in a new alternator at Autozone, even replaced my battery from walmart, and spent almost a full day trying to get alternator replaced. Autozone let me borrow some tools, used 19mm, 12mm, and 10mm wrenches, they told me both my battery and alternator was bad. That last bolt on the bottom also gave me hard time, I had to get the serpentine belt off to break off the bolt. Was nervous, but was taking it really slow and got it all back on! Now it's been at least a week and start up seems good! I kept watching your video during the change!
I don't know what kind of alternator is on your car. Some Honda has Smart Alternator I think another name for this is dual charging system. Smart Alternator has about 12.5 to 12.9 volt while engine running, so because of this low voltage, most tester will read this as bad alternator even though it's good. Alternator that are not smart with engine running are about 14 volt. Just something to think about.
@@WelkingVue thanks man, I just bought a rebuilt alternator for my honda civic 2013 And the test says bad alternator. You said that I can still drive my car like that. Or remplace for another one or new one?
@@World_Vacations If your alternator is really bad you should replace it. I can't say whether you should or not because I don't know if the test was done accurate. During the recording of this video I wasn't knowledgeable about Smart Alternator. Right now I could probably easily identify them if I ran into one.
Leaving trunk open caused bad alternator? Back of my Honda civic got beat up reversing into concrete light post. Trunk will not close.. Thought it was bad battery.. I first jumped car, did not start , made clicking noise. Next bypassed battery by jumping directly to terminals. Same clicking noise trying to start. Bad alternator?
Thanks for sharing this Welking. My son and I changed his alternator following your guide. Ordinary set of metric wrenches and deep well sockets covered all the fasteners but ratcheting wrenches made it a bit quicker. We used a large adjustable wrench on the tensioner, and it was quite a struggle to get the belt off, then back on again. Measure that one and get the right size wrench before you try this. The belt mostly stayed in place except the bottom front pulley.
Dude, this video was pure gold. Not only was the information very helpful, but I want to give you a huge thanks for showing all the challenges that you dealt with throughout this project. The bad alternator at the end of the video was the frosting on the cake. Excellent! I feel like I can really know what to expect because it's the same aggravation that I always go through every time I put my car up on the jack stands. On a side note, I want to ask: was that bolted wire connection on the alternator the ground wire? I've been trying to find all the grounds in my 2012 because I'm getting random low power errors from my ABS ECU. On occasion I also get similar messages from other systems and I suspect that it may be due to a number of aging ground connections.
I still have this car I just went out to open the hood and took a look. If you're talking about the wire where a rubber boot covers one end, I think this wire is the power wire for the alternator. I see two other wires with electric connector. I can't really help you on this, but I assume the alternator housing is grounded to the engine with that bigger bolt holding the alternator to the engine.
Thank you, this helped me find out how to get the belt off. I was used to older cars where the tensioner is part of the alternator bolt system. Spot on with your information
Thanks Welking! I was able to replace it pretty quick. It helped reviewing the new one first to understand where all the bolts were. I really appreciate you making a thorough video of each step.
This was very helpful. The one thing that would have made it even better, would be if you could say what size each wrench or socket was that you used! Thank you.
Very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. The process looks about like I had envisioned but it's good to see it before doing it in person.

I changed the AC compressor and a broken serpentine belt tensioner no issues but now I can’t get that big screw to go in the alternator I noticed yours wasn’t all the way flushed at the end of the video …
I'm not there, so I don't know what you're doing wrong. Here's a tip. If you can't get the bolt and screw in, then you got to figure out why. Once you know what's preventing you, then fix that problem.
When changing one on an SI model you will have to remove the front cross member and passenger side radiator fan in order to get it swapped out. Otherwise there's not enough room to replace. I had to find this out the hard way... Hope this helps someone.
Do you know if you have a Smart Alternator? If you do, then most likely your old alternator is still good. Traditional Alternator Tester cannot accurately test Smart Alternator.
Thanks for the feedback. Reason I don't mention size of sockets is because I recommend buying a set. More convenient and less expensive in the long-term use.

I think there's some kind of bad engineering with the charging system mine is a 2015 Civic. I expected the alternator to last a lot longer. On my car I never had any battery warning light coming on, but I did needed to jump start the old battery lots of times. After getting a new battery I didn't need to jump start anymore. Because the new alternator was bad I just put the old alternator back on lol. Haven't had any problem since then lol. I don't think it's the alternator I think the problem is the car's computer. On a car with good charging system with engine on the alternator should charge about 14 volt, then with all power on like headlight, dome light, radio, emergency light, the voltage should drop a little, but on my car with engine on the voltage is about 12.4 volt, then with all power on the voltage increase to 14 volt. My car the charging system is reversing, it's an unusual problem I never heard of. I tested the voltage with multi-meter. At least Auto Zone tested your alternator good, both my new and old alternator tested bad lol. Just be careful with the bolt if you strip the bolt holding the alternator you'll run into problems.
@@chamsariel1139 if that's true, then the SE or Special Edition was made that way. I know someone with a 2015 Honda Civic LX and the charging is same as other cars when tested.
Hey Welking Vue saw your video I found a solution for the next time you have a problem with that bolt for the alternator, once you’ve revoked the long bolt from the alternator try prying towards the grill of the car and then get a 12mm wrench and that should give you the space you need to loosen the bottom bolt of the alternator as for putting it back on it’s still quite a bitch
