Killer tutorial, thanks for posting this! For those not interested in dumping fluids, I’ll share that I was able to extract/install the alternator with the power steering and coolant lines still connected. Removal of the brackets as shown here is key, then the lower portion of the coolant reservoir can be tucked into the bumper cavity. After moving the alternator over to the space below the reservoirs, the power steering reservoir can be pulled up and towards the drivers side, allowing enough space to pull the alternator out. It required a little more juggling than the method here, but it’s doable. Cheers!

Thanks: Friday night my wife says "the minivan has a red battery light". Tested voltage and fuses and found this video. Bought new alternator at Autozone and went to work. Odyssey is back in business before the weekend is over. Few changes to the procedure in in the video: - Instead of clamping the power steering hose I used a cork from a wine-bottle to prevent leakage. - The upper bolt that holds the alternator was a 12mm head in my case. - My 19mm ratchet-socked is quite long. The screw I needed to use to push back the bushel of the lower alternator mount (to fit the ratchet-socket) is too long to fit between the bushel and the far-end-mount where the bolt screw in. Instead I used a screw between the bushel and this far-end mount with a washer and a nut to push the bushel to the left by turning the nut towards the bushel. So instead of "pulling out" the bushel from left, I pushed it out from the right. Really good video.
This is without a doubt the best step by step I have ever seen. The "squeezy squeezy" joke you dropped saved my 25-86$ in a broken connector. which I was fighting with for 20 minutes. I was going to remove the A/C hose from the Compressor, but you showed that I was missing a major factor in how the alternator was mounted. The bolt/socket bushing press was such a life saver. THANK YOU!
That trick you used at 6:00 mins in for the little sleeve is a very handy method! I just did an alternator on our Odyssey today and use that exact tactic, worked incredibly well! Additionally, I can confirm that you can indeed remove the alternator without disconnecting any lines, whether power steering or coolant, etc. you’ve definitely got to work around more “things” doing the job but it’s totally possible. And also just a note for anyone else doing this, watch out for all that oil that’s spilling onto the alternator. Honda’s V6 engines have a common issue where the VTEC solenoid will begin to leak oil over time. Because of its location, oil will run down the engine and basically right onto the alternator. You can see this exact issue in this video here. When this happens it can cause the alternator to fail prematurely. The gaskets for the VTEC solenoid can be found online for a very low price and it’s a simple fix too. Definitely something to do before a new alternator is put on the vehicle to prevent ruining your investment and hard work!

This video completely saved me. Broke down 200 miles from home and was able to get fixed and home. Make sure to move the bushing, you weren’t kidding about pain and swearing to get the alternator back in.
Made this repair with the help of my two sons. Followed along with your video step by step and we got it done. We had a bit of trouble removing the alternator from its resting place. After trying for 20min, my younger son walked over and said, "why don't you twist that (tensioner) pulley out of the way." Genius. I have to say, this is the best tutorial video I have ran across (any project). I have replaced Odyssey alternators (we have 4 of them) before and they are always a pain in the a$$. So, I thought I might see if someone had a better way. While this it's not easy, this approach is much easier than how I have done it before. I followed TDT's approach pretty much exact (except I used vice-grips to clamp the PS fluid hose - mistake, leaked all over the place. I tried to find the clamps that TDT used from Harbor Freight but didn't see them online. Anyone know what they are called? I'd like to get a set.) This is by far the best way I have done it and I very much appreciate the video. The production is just excellent. The views and camera angles are easy to see and make things very clear. I honestly don't know how you got some of those shots so clearly. Instruction was great and loved your son's "uh oh" when you dropped the bolt. Although I do have one negative, ... I'm a little dubious you really found that bolt 😊. Fantastic job and thanks for taking the time to make this video. JUST GREAT!

A year later, this video is still helping folks. It saved me a lot of money, but I don't have extra money right now, which is genuinely appreciated. I got it done without that excellent tensioner bar tool, which definitely would have made it easier. I used a 1/2" ratchet drive with a long impact socket on it and struggled, LOL. Your video was well-edited and concise; again, it was SO helpful.
This was the best video for the Odyssey. Thank you. I did find out that to ease the alternator removal and install, push on the tensioner. It gives you an extra inch or so that made it so much easier.
I did this alternator replacement today using the directions from this video. The job took me about 2 hours only because I wasted about 45 minutes looking for a bolt long enough for my 19mm socket and plus the washer and nut needed to move the bushing forward enough to install the alternator. I definitely recommend this tutorial.

Should U-tube ever give prizes for instructional videos this one should be a winner. From the instruction to the actual video views, this is super. A couple of notes: On my 2011, the 6mm hex head you needed was a 10 mm socket, one should check their bolt type before buying a hex socket. Where you used a socket to reposition the mounting bushing, I used the box end of a box head wrench with a diameter greater than the bushing. I didn't have a socket wide enough that was short enough to fit the largest bolt length I could get into the bushing. One thing that surprised me was the difficulty of getting the old alternator out, but the ease the new one was to get in. Just lucky I guess. Thanks again!
Very good! 10/10 You prob already know of this but 9/10 times the alternator failing in Honda 3.5 liters is oil leak from vcm/spool gaskets. Also with this engine I highly recommend the vcm muzzler, it's pretty much plug and play and worth reading into! Cheers bro great work!!!

I have a 2015 honda odyssey and my battery light was warning me a few days prior to it shutting down in mid drive. I was lucky enough to power to get home from grocery store a mile down the road. Now, I checked a reputable shop but even they can't believe how expensive it can be for them to fix. I really can afford close to $1K for this fix. I'm not really a DIY person but to save over 500 dollars I just might do it. I have a mechanic toolset I bought at costco a few years ago but I'm so nervous to work on this.. but this video made it looks relatively easy. I give the Doubtful Technician his flowers for coming out with this tutorial
What is not mentioned is that when doing this, you need to double check the spool valve for leaks. It is TSB 20-023. This spool valve on Honda V6 will kill the alternator. Based on the video, the alternator that was removed has a lot of oil residue on it, so this is likely the cause. You need to consider the spool valve fix and inspect for oil leaks whenever the alternator fails. Also, the bushing can be tapped outward with just wrench, unless your car is severely rusted.
update: 5:08 After watching this a few times, you definitely showed EXACTLY how it comes out. And the fact that you practically slid the new one back in just supports it. Excellent video my friend. Thanks! After watching it, I went out there and it came right out. Also I used a zip tie to pull it out and to drop the new one back in. worked like a charm.

Nice video of how to change the alternator. The real root cause of alternator failing is the huge oil leak from the seal of the spool valve, right below the oil stick. Oil leak cause the alternator to fail prematurely. Thanks
This is an excellent tutorial. Just one thing I would like to add. Alternators can totally fail on their own with time age and mileage. But s lot of videos I've watched look like there is a lot of oil leaking onto the alternator. That can make the alternator prematurely fail. Just a heads up. You may want to fix your oil leak at the same time. Possibly the front valve cover.

Awesome. Very helpful. The only improvement I discovered was moving the tensioner out of the way when it was time to get the alternator out. Had a helper crank that to the back and the alternator came right out quick. New one went right back in smoothly, too.
How is the alternator holding up? I noticed a lot of oil on your old one. That is usually an indication of a leaking spool valve seal. When it leaks it drips oil down on the alternator causing premature alternator failures. Regardless, this might be best tutorial on UA-cam. Thanks again!

Two best practices I really liked I will adopt (on my pending alternator replacement) is the bolt/socket trick to extract the lower mounting bolt bushing to facilitate the install and your parts bin to keep track of and organize every (piece) part removed. This is a must for me as I always seem to have leftover h/w when I complete a job! 🧐Keep up the good work my friend!

Incredible video! You probably just saved me 500$ in labor! I really appreciate the straightforward and clear instructions. The only thing that was different on my vehicle, was that the socket cap screw was 5.5 mm instead of 6. I tried entirely too long to try and force the 6 in 😂.
Excellent video, I wish everybody did videos like this to the point without a lot of extraneous content. Although everything was helpful, the most helpful to me was the way you pressed the bushing out in the attachment bracket. I think you should do a video lasting about 30 seconds explaining this in caps “before you change your 11 through 17 Odyssey alternator watch this video.” I believe he would save 100s of hours of peoples lives lol. Also, I think you get a Bajillion hits quickly

A few comments on Honda Odyssey EX-L 2011: - In my case instead of hex head socket bolt there was a usual 12mm hex head bolt - There was no need to remove upper bracket holding power steering reservoir - To easily pull the alternator after unscrewing everything push the belt tensioner out of the way.

I totally had to do this to get the alternator past the tensioner too. You move the tensioner forward just like when you take the belt off.

The real root cause of alternator failing is the huge oil leak from the seal of the spool valve, right below the oil stick. Oil leak cause the alternator to fail prematurely.

This is an excellent tutorial. Just one thing I would like to add. Alternators can totally fail on their own with time age and mileage. But s lot of videos I've watched look like there is a lot of oil leaking onto the alternator. That can make the alternator prematurely fail. Just a heads up. You may want to fix your oil leak at the same time. Possibly the front valve cover.

Awesome. Very helpful. The only improvement I discovered was moving the tensioner out of the way when it was time to get the alternator out. Had a helper crank that to the back and the alternator came right out quick. New one went right back in smoothly, too.

How is the alternator holding up? I noticed a lot of oil on your old one. That is usually an indication of a leaking spool valve seal. When it leaks it drips oil down on the alternator causing premature alternator failures. Regardless, this might be best tutorial on UA-cam. Thanks again!

Excellent video DT! Very efficiently done covering all key points of the removal/install with a small dose of humor/sarcasm. Two best practices I really liked I will adopt (on my pending alternator replacement) is the bolt/socket trick to extract the lower mounting bolt bushing to facilitate the install and your parts bin to keep track of and organize every (piece) part removed. This is a must for me as I always seem to have leftover h/w when I complete a job! 🧐Keep up the good work my friend!

Incredible video! You probably just saved me 500$ in labor! I really appreciate the straightforward and clear instructions. The only thing that was different on my vehicle, was that the socket cap screw was 5.5 mm instead of 6. I tried entirely too long to try and force the 6 in 😂.

Dude... thank you so much! You made that so simple to follow & do.... can I make 1 suggestion that I discovered? When you are trying to remove the unit from behind the ac line,... hit the tensioner pulley & it slides both in & out very easily... learned on the install lol

Confused on the bushing that you had to press out little with the socket trick. What caused it to move out of place?

A few comments on Honda Odyssey EX-L 2011:
- In my case instead of hex head socket bolt there was a usual 12mm hex head bolt
- There was no need to remove upper bracket holding power steering reservoir
- To easily pull the alternator after unscrewing everything push the belt tensioner out of the way.
