      It looks like Cabrera was given some leeway with what he was saying. I'm guessing the ump finally said, "OK, you said your piece, now that's it," and Cabrera kept going. As Jonah Platt pointed out, you can't argue balls & strikes.

    Umpires like this infuriate me. I totally understand that they have the right to throw you out, but Miggy also has the right to talk with the umpire and have a grievance with the calls. It was a bad call, but not a TERRIBLE one. I get pissed off at umps like Gorman because they don't seem to care that the tens of thousands of people in the crowd aren't there to see them. Many/most of them are there to see the only Triple Crown winner since the 1960's. I mean, this is the TOP OF THE FIRST INNING and he is robbing these fans of a chance to see one of the greatest players in league history. With age comes arrogance, just look at Joe West.

      Oh Buddy But at the same time its the home plate umpires call to make, and Gorman thought he didnt need the help. Miggy did take a swing, and I understand his greiveance, but its baseball. One game out of 162 nine times out of ten wont make a difference in the playoff race, epecially in the AL Central.

    • @chris7394123
      @chris7394123 11 років тому +2

      Oh Buddy Once the plate umpire says "yes he went", by rule there can be no appeal. Only if the plate umpire rules no swing is he allowed to ask for help.

    • @vincentchase9534
      @vincentchase9534 11 років тому

      "..by rule there can be no appeal". But the umpires aren't walking talking rulebooks. They are there to officiate and yes make sure people are following the rules, but since the early days of baseball umpires have allowed hitters, cacthers and managers to air their grievances because it's an emotional game.

  • @Bitshitter
    @Bitshitter 3 роки тому +1

    He blatantly swung around. Some debate on what is a swing on a checked swing: some say if the barrel of the bat extends past the plate, other say if the hands extend past the plate, still others say if the barrel of the bat extends in front of the hands.
    Here, the barrel of the bat extended in front of the hands, but BOTH the barrel AND his hands extended in front of the plate. All boxes got checked there. And it doesn't matter if he got hit by the pitch during his checked swing attempt - what matters is the swing of the bat during the pitch. If you swung, you swung. That's a strike by rule....

      R. Austin Gore
      It should. The tens of thousands of people in the stands didn't come to see Brian Gorman, they came to see players, especially Miguel Cabrera. As long as he's not being incredibly vulgar and disrespectful an umpire should have a cool enough head to take some gripe, especially in THE TOP OF THE FIRST INNING.

    • @chris7394123
      @chris7394123 11 років тому +4

      Oh Buddy Have you ever umpired? Have you played at the pro, college, or even high school level? Don't presume to know what an umpire at the MLB level should or shouldn't do.

    • @vincentchase9534
      @vincentchase9534 11 років тому +2

      chris7394123
      No. But I have enough common sense to know that baseball at the pro level is a business as much as a sport and it shouldn't deprive fans of seeing an all-time great player just because an umpire has a short old-man fuse.

  • @HatchetHatter
    @HatchetHatter 10 років тому +2

    You don't have to "say something extremely vulgar" to get ejected. If you argue a strike (or in this case foul) call, which he appeared to be doing, a pitch or two after the incident and don't drop it, you're going to get tossed 9 out of 10 times. He did have a legitimate argument, and I'm not saying he was wrong on that front, but arguing a call like this to the ump wasn't a very good idea. It doesn't matter if he's "the best player in the game". He still has to follow the rules of the game. In this case, MLB rule 9.02. "(a) Any umpire’s decision which involves judgment, such as, but not limited to, whether a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or a ball, or whether a runner is safe or out, is final. No player, manager, coach or substitute shall object to any such judgment decisions."

  • @milwaukeejt
    @milwaukeejt 7 років тому +3

    Cabrera swung and got hit. From LL to MLB, that is a strike. Cabrera should know that. He got his explanation immediately after. He should have dropped it there. Continuing to jaw after the next pitch earned him an ejection. Cabrera was the only one behaving improperly.

  • @dave0mary
    @dave0mary 10 років тому +4

    Cabrera wouldn't leave it alone. That's why he was tossed. The ump let him have his say. Then ... Miggy kept it up. Gone dude.

  • @defiantone8556
    @defiantone8556 8 років тому +4

    No question Miggy went around. That said & he knew he did, he should've just kept his big mouth shut & finished his at bat. So he more less got his own ass tossed out of this one.

    • @TheFancyMentlegen
      @TheFancyMentlegen 8 років тому +1

      +defiantone There was no reason to toss him out, he wasn't impeding play to argue, nor was he saying anything vulgar. He would've been much more animated if he did so. There's no issue with disputing a call as long as you don't take it overboard, and you continue to play the game, which he didn't, and he did.

    • @defiantone8556
      @defiantone8556 8 років тому

      +EggianoScumaldo Rule of thumb when it comes to baseball & that is, you keep you're big mouth shut & don't try & show up the umpire or you get tossed. Simple but fact. I don't like it either, but that's just the way it works. That's why managers get the toss, whenever they argue balls & strikes. Simple but fact. Its like I said, Miggy should've just kept his big mouth shut & he didn't, & ya saw what the end result was.

    • @matrixphijr
      @matrixphijr 8 років тому

      +defiantone Problem with that is umpires SHOULD be shown up. And they should be okay with it. You can't have a tough (also highly exclusive) job, screw up, and not expect to take some heat for it. They should have thicker skin.

    • @defiantone8556

    The "best player in the game" doesn't get special treatment, or shouldn't. You can't argue balls & strikes. Basic 101. I'm not saying he was, but if he was the rules are the rules.

    Unfortunately, it was a strike. The bat crossed the plane of the plate clearly, whether or not he broke his wrists. It may have been a weak ejection, but if you keep talking, you're going to get tossed. Think these guys would know that by now.

    At that point, Leyland, one of the base coaches or Fielder has to get Cabrera away from Gorman. When he starts using his bat and helmet to point at the official's face, that's when you get your slugger out of there.

  • @Daveyo747
    @Daveyo747 6 років тому

    The umpires have way too much power to eject. This needs to be reduced, especially over calls of strikes or balls. If replay clearly shows its a ball and the ump calls a strike, how can one get it over ruled?? Its a glaring huge hole here. Someone also suggested to start using a electronic strike and ball zone that can adjust based on the players height. Its one way to eliminate home plate umpire. Since they have replay for outfielders, infielders, runners etc., its time to use replay for strike and ball calls as well. You will need a camera that looks straight down and one out straight out from center field looking at the line from pitching rubber to home plate.

    The announcers are biased but what is worse the are STUPID! An offensive player can not ask for an appeal on a check swing. Also on a check swing when an appeal is asked by the defense the umpire under OBR is required to grant the appeal. This however is only for checked swing not for example a play at first.

    So glad the MLB is speeding up the game. Hitters in baseball are the most spoiled athletes in sports. You play like 200 games and you have to have your own 10 minute zen session after every pitch? I mean my god...what the fuck is there to possibly think about every time? "Hmm....I bet he'll throw one of 4 or 5 pitches....fuck it here we go" *next pitch* "hmm...lemme just unstrap and strap my gloves for the 3rd time...I wonder what pitch he'll throw.....lemme just stretch the bat over my shoulders....alright fuck it here we go" shit is pretentious as hell, and so painful to watch. Tim Peters The umpire could have ejected him when he first started arguing the call (which you CAN'T do), but he showed restraint and didn't. It wasn't until Cabrera started arguing a second time (it's pretty clear the umpire says SOMETHING to him before he gets tossed, which I'd assume was something like "Okay" or "Stop") that he got tossed.
      I'm also not sure what video you're watching, because the only person who "goes ballistic" in this video is Cabrera himself.
