Just happened to come across this video . Nice job . You make it seem effortless. That was a big task . I did iron butt 1000 twice on a rigid with steel seat when younger and didnt know i was doing it lol . I was just trying to get where i was going as fast as i could . Now im older by a longshot and i will be planning to do it on record but on a 30 year old electra glide this time with a seat and shocks . Cheers to you and keep enjoying the world on 2 wheels.
Hey Jim - this was interesting! I'm glad to live vicariously through your video so I don't need to do this! The longest trip I've ever done was 843 miles - returning to Mn from Ok a few years ago. My trip home to Wi yesterday was just over 700 miles, but as you referenced the windchill can really beat you down in the morning (was 45F (53 degrees at 85mph)). Was much better after I stopped and put on my rain pants. Ride safe- Cheers!
Well Jim I had to kick a little bit that you were cold in 64° weather... Of course I did notice your coat did not have the inner liner on.... I put a sweatshirt underneath my coat with the liner. For rides that are in the 40 degree area.. Heated sweatshirt. And some riding pants for less then 40 ... Guess we all tolerate cold different... But for instance my hands get cold very... Easy.. The hippo hand considered event you I have heated grips and wood guards ...😅
Great Video. I just finished mine on 6/24/21. Did the NY loop 1114 miles in 23 hrs. I had camera issues and my Revere crashed which cost me 170 of unrecorded miles. Spotwalla was tracking, thank goodness. video quality at end is garbage, was so exhausted towards the end.
A few days ago I saw a BMW parked in the lot of my neurologist. I said to myself that bike looks familiar. As I parked my k1600 GTLnext to it I said, "oh sh**, that is Jims bike. Would love to catch up and do some riding. Ivory
I've been watching alot of IBA Saddlesore 1000 vids lately. I see your videos all through the search. To paraphrase those 3 old men at the barber shop in Forrest Gump, "that man sure is a riding fool". I mean that in a good way lol. Living the dream dude. Seeing America on 2 wheels is wonderful. Stay safe out there and thanks for posting.
STEVEN!!! Thanks for the heartfelt comment, I just wish my BMW was as cool as Forrest’s red SOT riding lawnmower, ha ha ha! I can only say that for this riding fool it all starts with a positive mental attitude, good support from a dependable ground crew - no matter when or where, and knowledge that you have underneath you and at your fingertips is 110%, and the love of your family behind you every mile. Remember, plan the ride and ride the plan! See you out there some day Steven!

Much appreciated RoadGlide, the 12RTLC has a great history and I enjoyed learning about the LC version of her. My PIAA lights and Deer Alerts have saved me at least a 1/2 Doz times. You guys just made me check my rear tire tread for 2024 and I think it’s time to replace it before spring riding. Mahalos and hope to see you out there sometime soon. Jim
@@jimsoque4380 Thank you sir. Yes! Tires! TCLOCKS! Good man. 🙏🏻 Again, you looked pro out there. Keep representing what safe enjoyable life on two wheels looks like. ATGATT!
I just completed a Saddlesore 1000 ride. While I am glad I was able to do it, and of course, any excuse to ride is always welcome, I found having the time constraint takes away from the riding experience. Always concerned about stop times. And of course I was exhausted the last leg of the trip. Curious as to why you keep doing these Saddlesore 2000 rides. Thanks for the videos! I enjoyed them.
Hi Harley Rider, thanks for the note happy Fourth of July weekend. Congratulations on your first SS1000, the fun is just beginning! Very interesting question and it’s the first time I’ve been asked that. When I purchased my first 12 RT, I wanted to see whether that I could go the distance on a stock bike and it was really a test of my own personal Resources, both mental and physical. I can’t remember the exact ride, but I do remember that I had not been to that point of where Canada meets Vermont and New York, Rouses Pt. in a long time, so that was my far goal. The next SS I went to the BMW rally in Buffalo New York to see mine colleague and friend Harry Kachadoorian who was already ill with a glioblastoma brain tumor. It was to be our last ride together. Another SS I did in the summertime, i wanted to de compress and chose Savanna GA as my fat point, and come up thru the Smokey mountains. In this one I had to see my friend and colleague on short notice to re write an examination and on had short notice, I had to be at U of Iowa in 2 days so I took ouSS2K in the process! Then there is the life long adage that “there is no view of this country of ours like that on two wheels!” So with that said, I’m trying to take the blue lady on a CC 50, NY to SF along Rte 80 E2E, so I just need to find the time! Enjoy learning from my experiences and I hope to see you out there some day! Jim
Hey... thanks Northwoods! You travel safe up there and I'll let you know if I do the 'Round Lake Michigan 1000 Ride'. I now have good contacts in Sandusky and Grand Rapids.
Hey Doc Mac! Thanks for being so observant, yeah I think I broke 311 miles a couple of times! And true, I think the adrenalin from having to be at an academic commitment in Iowa City in under 72 hours kept me on a natural high, or so I guess. I had safe haven along the whole way as well and didn't have to tap into my resources in Cleveland, S. Chicago, Indianapolis, Penn State- Hershey, or Lehigh U. Hospital, PA, but they all knew when I was passing thru and was still doing OK. I tell you one thing though Doc, rain spray under the cover of darkness, and decreased visibility certainly makes you appreciate your reflexes and the confidence you have in a well maintained machine. I consider myself quite fortunate to have such good health and a good sense of awareness when I take on these MC challenges. Hopefully after all this preparedness, I'll be doing a CC 50 this summer! You are right though, because I just checked my video, and I sure was happy fella at 9: 35 pm at night, during the 44th hour of my 2 K journey, and in the pouring rain in Bethel, PA no doubt! 'Nuff said. Thanks for watching and sure hope to see you out there some day. Jim
Hey Doc: it’s now August 1, 2022 and I never got to attempt my CC 50, that dumb of heat which hit the Midwest in July, as well as those early tornado sightings quell those plans. And now with the fires burning in Southern California and rain activity coming up from Tennessee, I dare not leave the northeast bound for the Southwest. I’ll post updates on the IBA page on Facebook! I am preparing for my 13th bicycle ride of this tho! Www.PMC.org/js0357
Hey Jim: I have really enjoyed your content. Your rides on an RT are impressive. I moved on to a GTL a few years back but sometimes miss the RT. I live in Western Canada near the Rockies, so if you're ever in the area, definitely look me up. One quick question I do have though, is what have you found to be the most comfortable riding gear for these trips? I've gone through a few brands in the past, but am looking to try something new this season. Any advice you have would be appreciated. I really like your heated gear plug-in you installed as well. Definitely going to be putting it on the new bike (I ordered a 2022 K1600 but production delays now so will likely still be on my 2012 for most of this season). Cheers again!
Hi James! Thanks for your kind words and I hope you learned a little or maybe even a lot. The newer 12RT LC is just amazing! Please email me at jsoque@island-retina.com when you have some free time. Ride safe and see you out there some day soon!
Hey James, let’s start with seamless Reebok undergarment, top for me is a long sleeve, socks that are above the calf, the Columbia Mens hiking boots, the Newton Ridge II Hiking boot, fingerless leather bicycle gloves- old style, change your foam hand grips, good sunglasses, the Schuberth C3 World - flip up helmet with The SRC Cardo communication system, a nylon fishing gator for your neck and head. Also, a two piece Goretex riding outfit; mine is Aerostitch top and Sedici pants, both of mine are 1 size larger than normal to accommodate under garment layers. Finish it off with your favorite Custom seat (mine is Corbin Leather Heated) and an AirHawk pillow. Hope this points you in the right direction and keep us posted! 🏍🏍🏍
Wonderful video, thanks for putting it together. Just completed my IBA 1500 and your video was an inspiration before I set off. Can you provide a link to the LED directionals on the mirrors? It's a great mod.
RENDELL!! I’m so excited for you and Job Well Done! Thank you for the incredibly generous response, through the altered states that we go through during an IBA ride, one would only hope that other viewers would be able to learn and also be inspired by my adventures. I did some homework for you, and if I were going to accessorize my next motorcycle I would pick something very similar to these auxiliary indicator lights which operate very much the same as the ones that I acquired on eBay a couple of years ago. www.ebay.com/itm/124824582711?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=DRaXk1h-SNS&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=q_cJHHKOR3G&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=SMS I simply remove the speaker housing, and then the Sideview mirror housing and use a posi tap connector for both the red and the black indicators which face forward, and then using double stick tape made them face backwards. Again CONGRATULATIONS RENDELL and I wish you many more adventurous IBA rides in the future and I hope to see you out there on the road someday! Jim Soque
Jim, just saw this and it was inspiring. I have not tried an Ironbutt ride yet, but plan to do so soon. How did your riding gear hold up in the rain on that trip? Have you changed anything up since then?
Hello Mr. Hutchins. I’m very delighted to get this inquiry from you! I had a mission in mind and that was to get to the University of Iowa for a meeting on short notice, so that was my focus. As for what I used and how I got there, The Tusk hand guards are definitely something that can help whether the wind affect on your hands and still manage to keep you cool, and I’m sure you saw that I was wearing old style bicycle gloves. The Aerostitch top is still what I use for trip such as this, it’s very formidable. I had two sets of rain gear either frogtoggs shell, or a Bmw rain suit, I think I used both over period of 44 hours. I forgot to mention in my epilogue, low ankle, loose fitting socks will help with circulation, I’m sure you saw the air pillow, and don’t forget your hydration apparatus. There are other IBA 1.0 K and IBA 1.5 K videos underneath my name, so check those out! See you out there some day soon Mark!
On the rain part, does that mean the Gore-Tex in your Aerostich jacket isn’t up for the job and you have to have two additional rain suits to make up for it?
On the rain part, my aerostitch are about 6 years old, I learned later that you can re- scotchbright them to make more water repellent. But, I always travel with two sets of rain gear just in case, as well as ankle gators, 3 gloves, and 3 kinds of eye protection. 😊
Sounds like a wise thing to do. I wear a Klim Marrakesh and add liners and layers to make it 4 season. It has a water repellent treatment, but my rain shell is a Klim Forecast Gor Tex that works so far, but living in Utah and Wyoming, I don’t get the rainfall you do.
Hey Savage 0, This is not for the faint of heart, you should visit www.ironbutt.com/ and read up on some of the IBA distance and time challenges and also some recommended equipment purchases and accessories. Start with minimum 1100 cc Sport Touring bike and wine goretex outer garments, and a FF helmet. Then please email me your question to Jsoque@island-retina.com, I’ll certainly try to help you. But, if you are past that, then next create a riding loop on Google maps, save it, and email me your route, with a realistic start and stop please. Thanks and good luck, Jim
