I was wondering what is the maximum mileage I could get on my 2016 BMW R1200RT LC on one tank of gas. Then, I planned to turn around and return back home with the intentions of running out of gas. When I'm leaving, the mileage RANGE reads 2...

Riding my BMW R1150RT, ROUTE 211, East bound to Skyline Drive
A few days ago I saw a BMW parked in the lot of my neurologist. I said to myself that bike looks familiar. As I parked my k1600 GTLnext to it I said, "oh sh**, that is Jims bike. Would love to catch up and do some riding. Ivory
Ivory: thanks for swinging by, email me at jsoque@vrcny.com Enjoy the warm weather! Jim
Some really cool ideas! My '17 RT is just a fantastic bike although long distance riding isn't my forte'. It's a superb commuting machine and I can ride almost all year with the heated grips and Sargent seat. Just went through some minor hell changing out the burned out headlight bulb (put in an LED...MUCH better). Access there is horrible, just FYI, have to remove some side fairing parts.
Thanks Braind! I changed out my front driving light to an LED and then I changed out the left and right high beams to penetrating yellow LED last summer, and in both of those cases I had to get on my knees and reach in with my arm! I’ve upgraded to a Russel Day Long Saddle for my daughter’n me. About to list that Corbin Double Heated Seat For Sale, BMW 12RT ‘14-18, and LD riders will get first preference! Any one interested? Jim
LINKS, dammit...
Jim, just saw this and it was inspiring. I have not tried an Ironbutt ride yet, but plan to do so soon. How did your riding gear hold up in the rain on that trip? Have you changed anything up since then?
Hello Mr. Hutchins. I’m very delighted to get this inquiry from you! I had a mission in mind and that was to get to the University of Iowa for a meeting on short notice, so that was my focus. As for what I used and how I got there, The Tusk hand guards are definitely something that can help whether the wind affect on your hands and still manage to keep you cool, and I’m sure you saw that I was wearing old style bicycle gloves. The Aerostitch top is still what I use for trip such as this, it’s very formidable. I had two sets of rain gear either frogtoggs shell, or a Bmw rain suit, I think I used both over period of 44 hours. I forgot to mention in my epilogue, low ankle, loose fitting socks will help with circulation, I’m sure you saw the air pillow, and don’t forget your hydration apparatus. There are other IBA 1.0 K and IBA 1.5 K videos underneath my name, so check those out! See you out there some day soon Mark!
On the rain part, does that mean the Gore-Tex in your Aerostich jacket isn’t up for the job and you have to have two additional rain suits to make up for it?
On the rain part, my aerostitch are about 6 years old, I learned later that you can re- scotchbright them to make more water repellent. But, I always travel with two sets of rain gear just in case, as well as ankle gators, 3 gloves, and 3 kinds of eye protection. 😊
Sounds like a wise thing to do. I wear a Klim Marrakesh and add liners and layers to make it 4 season. It has a water repellent treatment, but my rain shell is a Klim Forecast Gor Tex that works so far, but living in Utah and Wyoming, I don’t get the rainfall you do.
Running out of fuel on an R1200RT… that takes some effort! ;)
TM! Yup, it’s happened only to me once on a 500 mile trials run to test the range of my tank! 337 miles after I top drilled bleeder air hole! Hope to see you out there some day🏍️ Jim
Just happened to come across this video . Nice job . You make it seem effortless. That was a big task . I did iron butt 1000 twice on a rigid with steel seat when younger and didnt know i was doing it lol . I was just trying to get where i was going as fast as i could . Now im older by a longshot and i will be planning to do it on record but on a 30 year old electra glide this time with a seat and shocks . Cheers to you and keep enjoying the world on 2 wheels.
Nice setup
Well Jim I had to kick a little bit that you were cold in 64° weather... Of course I did notice your coat did not have the inner liner on.... I put a sweatshirt underneath my coat with the liner. For rides that are in the 40 degree area.. Heated sweatshirt. And some riding pants for less then 40 ... Guess we all tolerate cold different... But for instance my hands get cold very... Easy.. The hippo hand considered event you I have heated grips and wood guards ...😅
Nice riding. That’s some long distance! 2k in 48 hours is crazy!! I’ve only ever done 1k. See you down the road!
Thank you F6B… the hardest decision is deciding to leave, the smartest decision is to stay ahead of the NYC traffic!
Nice job Jim! Excellently prepped and supplied. Sweet bike too. This is the way you do it. Safe travels near and far.
Much appreciated RoadGlide, the 12RTLC has a great history and I enjoyed learning about the LC version of her. My PIAA lights and Deer Alerts have saved me at least a 1/2 Doz times. You guys just made me check my rear tire tread for 2024 and I think it’s time to replace it before spring riding. Mahalos and hope to see you out there sometime soon. Jim

Hey John, y’know doesn’t hurt so much if you do it a little at a time. The seat was 2nd hand, about 400, WS 110, Sierra shelf about 130, www.shopbmwmotorcycle.com/ Thanks for looking, and a half great rides with your K1600! Gobble gobble gobble 🦃🦃🦃
what are those things on the outside of your mirrors?
Hey David, Good question! They are a rear facing mirror turn indicators wired to the front turn indicators . When I’m in traffic And want to signal to change lanes, often the car slightly behind you cannot see your intentions because they may be in front of your rear facing turn signal. Having one on the mirror ends let’s them see you intend to change lanes. It’s just one of these with double stick tape as a mount. www.ebay.com/itm/386096389861?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=7vmfcwhlqhy&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=q_cJHHKOR3G&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Inexpensive and will probably save your life one day! Thanks for asking!
@@jimsoque4380Awesome idea, thank you! BTW, I happen to like the extra accessories you’ve added to your bike, and thanks for sharing! Much appreciated.
Hey Jim - this was interesting! I'm glad to live vicariously through your video so I don't need to do this! The longest trip I've ever done was 843 miles - returning to Mn from Ok a few years ago. My trip home to Wi yesterday was just over 700 miles, but as you referenced the windchill can really beat you down in the morning (was 45F (53 degrees at 85mph)). Was much better after I stopped and put on my rain pants. Ride safe- Cheers!
Have you ever run out of fuel without using your fuel cans? I've all over the country, and with a bit of planning I don't see it happening, ever. I found the weight of carrying extra fuel pretty much negated the actual need for fuel ...Of course if you are traveling in North Africa, forget my comments...LOL
Hi RRE, yes I did once in Ohio in the dark. I was relieved at my advanced planning methods! And once I helped out a motorist on the side of the road and he was very grateful!
Enjoyed your video. It reminded me of all the accessories, time, and money I spent on turning my R12GSA into an incredible long distance riding machine. I just sold it yesterday and bought a new to me R1250RT. I’m keeping a minimalist point of view for this bike; I found that most of the accessories I bought had limited use for the majority of my rides. Liked and subscribed!
I just completed a Saddlesore 1000 ride. While I am glad I was able to do it, and of course, any excuse to ride is always welcome, I found having the time constraint takes away from the riding experience. Always concerned about stop times. And of course I was exhausted the last leg of the trip. Curious as to why you keep doing these Saddlesore 2000 rides. Thanks for the videos! I enjoyed them.
Hi Harley Rider, thanks for the note happy Fourth of July weekend. Congratulations on your first SS1000, the fun is just beginning! Very interesting question and it’s the first time I’ve been asked that. When I purchased my first 12 RT, I wanted to see whether that I could go the distance on a stock bike and it was really a test of my own personal Resources, both mental and physical. I can’t remember the exact ride, but I do remember that I had not been to that point of where Canada meets Vermont and New York, Rouses Pt. in a long time, so that was my far goal. The next SS I went to the BMW rally in Buffalo New York to see mine colleague and friend Harry Kachadoorian who was already ill with a glioblastoma brain tumor. It was to be our last ride together. Another SS I did in the summertime, i wanted to de compress and chose Savanna GA as my fat point, and come up thru the Smokey mountains. In this one I had to see my friend and colleague on short notice to re write an examination and on had short notice, I had to be at U of Iowa in 2 days so I took ouSS2K in the process! Then there is the life long adage that “there is no view of this country of ours like that on two wheels!” So with that said, I’m trying to take the blue lady on a CC 50, NY to SF along Rte 80 E2E, so I just need to find the time! Enjoy learning from my experiences and I hope to see you out there some day! Jim
@jimsoque4380 good luck bro on the CC 50

Wonderful video, thanks for putting it together. Just completed my IBA 1500 and your video was an inspiration before I set off. Can you provide a link to the LED directionals on the mirrors? It's a great mod.
RENDELL!! I’m so excited for you and Job Well Done! Thank you for the incredibly generous response, through the altered states that we go through during an IBA ride, one would only hope that other viewers would be able to learn and also be inspired by my adventures. I did some homework for you, and if I were going to accessorize my next motorcycle I would pick something very similar to these auxiliary indicator lights which operate very much the same as the ones that I acquired on eBay a couple of years ago. www.ebay.com/itm/124824582711?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=DRaXk1h-SNS&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=q_cJHHKOR3G&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=SMS I simply remove the speaker housing, and then the Sideview mirror housing and use a posi tap connector for both the red and the black indicators which face forward, and then using double stick tape made them face backwards. Again CONGRATULATIONS RENDELL and I wish you many more adventurous IBA rides in the future and I hope to see you out there on the road someday! Jim Soque

Start with minimum 1100 cc Sport Touring bike and wine goretex outer garments, and a FF helmet. Then please email me your question to Jsoque@island-retina.com, I’ll certainly try to help you. But, if you are past that, then next create a riding loop on Google maps, save it, and email me your route, with a realistic start and stop please. Thanks and good luck, Jim

JBG- it’s 7/9/22, anything to report?
How do you teach the deer to blow those whistles? Great video!
Enjoyed this very much. Very impressed how many miles on a full tank. Also you didn’t seem to be particularly fatigued!
Hey Doc Mac! Thanks for being so observant, yeah I think I broke 311 miles a couple of times! And true, I think the adrenalin from having to be at an academic commitment in Iowa City in under 72 hours kept me on a natural high, or so I guess. I had safe haven along the whole way as well and didn't have to tap into my resources in Cleveland, S. Chicago, Indianapolis, Penn State- Hershey, or Lehigh U. Hospital, PA, but they all knew when I was passing thru and was still doing OK. I tell you one thing though Doc, rain spray under the cover of darkness, and decreased visibility certainly makes you appreciate your reflexes and the confidence you have in a well maintained machine. I consider myself quite fortunate to have such good health and a good sense of awareness when I take on these MC challenges. Hopefully after all this preparedness, I'll be doing a CC 50 this summer! You are right though, because I just checked my video, and I sure was happy fella at 9: 35 pm at night, during the 44th hour of my 2 K journey, and in the pouring rain in Bethel, PA no doubt! 'Nuff said. Thanks for watching and sure hope to see you out there some day. Jim
Hey Doc: it’s now August 1, 2022 and I never got to attempt my CC 50, that dumb of heat which hit the Midwest in July, as well as those early tornado sightings quell those plans. And now with the fires burning in Southern California and rain activity coming up from Tennessee, I dare not leave the northeast bound for the Southwest. I’ll post updates on the IBA page on Facebook! I am preparing for my 13th bicycle ride of this tho! Www.PMC.org/js0357

Hey Jim: I have really enjoyed your content. Your rides on an RT are impressive. I moved on to a GTL a few years back but sometimes miss the RT. I live in Western Canada near the Rockies, so if you're ever in the area, definitely look me up. One quick question I do have though, is what have you found to be the most comfortable riding gear for these trips? I've gone through a few brands in the past, but am looking to try something new this season. Any advice you have would be appreciated. I really like your heated gear plug-in you installed as well. Definitely going to be putting it on the new bike (I ordered a 2022 K1600 but production delays now so will likely still be on my 2012 for most of this season). Cheers again!

Hey James, let’s start with seamless Reebok undergarment, top for me is a long sleeve, socks that are above the calf, the Columbia Mens hiking boots, the Newton Ridge II Hiking boot, fingerless leather bicycle gloves- old style, change your foam hand grips, good sunglasses, the Schuberth C3 World - flip up helmet with The SRC Cardo communication system, a nylon fishing gator for your neck and head. Also, a two piece Goretex riding outfit; mine is Aerostitch top and Sedici pants, both of mine are 1 size larger than normal to accommodate under garment layers. Eric: what did you end up getting? I just saw these: www.ebay.com/itm/145153064886?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=WPEBgYcMQHG&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=q_cJHHKOR3G&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=SMS
Would you tell us more about your choice of spare fuel containers. Seems like a good idea.
Hi Roly and group! Thanks for the note! I did some checking and my specifications were incorrect. The Primus Spare Fuel Bottle is 1.5 Liters, not 1 liter. I carry two of these, and if I went so far to go Bingo on fuel, I could have 3 Liters, or 0.8 Gals, or approx 37-38 miles to get myself out of trouble and find a fuel stop. I found one link and this outfit is from the UK and they advertise on eBay. www.ebay.com/itm/253170033251?epid=15015780283&hash=item3af21c2263:g:ZR4AAOSwC6haop6D Of note, in my tool bag/emergency supplies, I also carry a 3/4 inch dia, 5 foot long clear vinyl hose [HomeDepot] to use as a 'gasoline siphon' if I were to encounter any MC rider that needed fuel on the side of the highway, something we should all be prepared to do for our brethren. Thanks for the inquiry Roly and hope to see you out there some day.
Nice ride Jim!!!! You gave me some great ideas for my incoming '22 r1250rt......but.....you spent ALOT of money on this beauty and you're riding with cycling gloves?!?! LOL. I'm sure there's a story to that. Ride safe!!!!
Thanks Fred! That day was on the warm side, sunny and beautiful during my walk around for all of you and, unless it’s below 50, I like cycling gloves bc I can still handle my electronics, GPS, Waze and music. Do another search and you will find my IBA 2000 Ride 2021, to Iowa City and back, when I used my cycling gloves under handlebar hoods for 49 hours! There’s also a nice plug for Moto Jug on that one and Ive added a Quad Lock now. Hope to see you out there Fred, or perhaps when I make the run for my I80 E2E later this summer! 🤙
I live near bergen ny and found your video while planning my first BB1000 for this year. I plan to circle NYS perimeter, with the exception of NYC/Long Island. I like that you planned in meetings and events. I need to do that. Thanks.
I enjoy watching your videos thank you for sharing. Ride safe.
Aloha Sandman: thanks for the comment and glad You enjoyed. Just a quick search on eBay for the 12RTLC 14+ shows these: www.ebay.com/itm/133683056650 Hope you get them soon; they will absolutely make your ride complete!
Great video Jim, thanks! Where did you buy the rider floorboards? I can't seem to find them anywhere.
USP! I swear I answered you and many apologies, here is a set on eBay, www.ebay.com/itm/145153064886?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=WPEBgYcMQHG&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=q_cJHHKOR3G&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=SMS
Great Video. I just finished mine on 6/24/21. Did the NY loop 1114 miles in 23 hrs. I had camera issues and my Revere crashed which cost me 170 of unrecorded miles. Spotwalla was tracking, thank goodness. video quality at end is garbage, was so exhausted towards the end.
Way to stick it out there CD! Did all my recording with my iPhone XR and never dropped it in 8 thousand miles! Knock wood 👨 ! Ride safe!
Another successful run, Congratulations. IBA# 68779
Hey... thanks Northwoods! You travel safe up there and I'll let you know if I do the 'Round Lake Michigan 1000 Ride'. I now have good contacts in Sandusky and Grand Rapids.
Standing by to help you with your 12k service.
Thank your my brotha Mr. Boxflyer, let me get through my Pan Mass Challenge Ride for Cancer and I'll be giving you a ring-ring real soon!
Wow a great journey well presented!
Nice bike Jim, enjoy and be safe always!
Sorry you did not get to do the SS1000 but you did the right thing. On a motorcycle you need to keep safety first. Look forward to you trying again
Thank you Charles- yes, the strongest organ we can use on our LD rides is still our brain!
Enjoyed the video! When are you going to attempt another IBA?
Glad you enjoyed ID ! I’m planning a CC 50 soon, NJ - SF, or an E2E - Rte 80. My greatest limiting factor is hitting Kearney NE in the first 23 hours... it’s just a matter of time!
Hello ID: just finished posting an IBA 2K, here’s the link: ua-cam.com/video/tsb-sepwcDA/v-deo.html Hope to see you out there someday soon! Jim
